Ⅳ.阅读理解
A
In
its
best
times
on
the
nineteenth
century,thatch
(茅草屋顶)
played
an
important
role
in
protecting
British
homes
from
the
weather.But
new
technologies
since
have
led
to
a
rapid
decline
in
thatching
and
many
of
the
thatched
cottages
that
remain
have
been
changed
beyond
all
recognition
by
developers
or
have
run
into
disrepair,a
rather
upsetting
reminder
of
a
bygone
age.
A
Welsh
company,however,is
trying
to
breathe
new
life
into
some
of
the
last
traditional
thatched
cottages
in
western
Wales
by
repairing
them
and
letting
them
out
as
holiday
homes.Called
“Under
the
Thatch”,the
company
is
run
by
Greg
Stevenson,who
lives
in
his
own
thatched
cottage
in
Ceredigion.An
architectural
historian
by
training,he
repairs
old
buildings
in
old-fashioned
ways.
All
the
cottages
are
in
attractive
locations
around
southwest
Wales.Unlike
most
holiday
homes,the
cottages
are
let
all
year
round—chiefly
because
Greg
prices
them
lower
than
many
holiday
properties(房屋)
and
he’d
prefer
that
properties
are
rented
just
above
cost
price
than
not
used
at
all.And
with
that
comes
a
bargain
or
two:
it’s
common
for
a
property
to
go
for
as
little
as
£35
a
night.Consequently
occupancy
for
properties
with
“
Under
the
Thatch”
is
at
95
percent
(the
average
in
Wales
is
35
percent).
Its
success
has
meant
that
Greg
has
been
able
to
buy
up
more
old
cottages
and
bring
them
back
into
the
community.Greg
has
also
diversified
from
offering
only
thatched
cottages:
he
now
lets
out
a
variety
of
rare
accommodations
dotted
around
western
styles,including
a
renovated(修复的)
train
carriage
and
two
gypsy
caravans
which
were
used
by
Romanies.
Most
of
his
thirty
properties
are
run
using
environmentally
friendly
technologies—including
solar
panels
and
recycled
furnishings.But
most
importantly,what
the
cottages
all
have
in
common
is
that
they
bring
back
life
to
local
communities.Spend
a
weekend
“Under
the
Thatch”
rather
than
in
a
holiday
home,buy
local
food
and
visit
nearby
restaurants,and
you
will
be
contributing
to
the
local
economy.

Some

referred

pot
of
soup.All
cultural
aspects
are
mixed
together,sacrificing
their
original
identity
and
keeping
a
bit
of
what
they
were
to
become
a
new
reality.The
longer
the
soup
is
cooked,the
better
the
taste
and
the
more
likely
it
will
be
for
the
mixture
to
dissolve.In
this
sense,America
can
surely
be
seen
as
a
melting
pot
where
people
from
all
over
the
world
come
to
live
and
work
together
forming
one
nation.There
are
dozens
of
shared
symbols.
4
In
such
a
culture,symbols
like
the
flag
and
the
nation’s
official
song
serve
to
break
down
the
walls
which
separate
ethnic
groups.?
Whether
a
salad
bowl
or
a
melting
pot,America
can
be
best
described
as
a
mixture
of
both. 5 ?
A.Both
are
correct
depending
on
one’s
point
of
view.
B.They
never
lose
their
shapes,colours
or
tastes.
C.This
is
why
there
is
so
much
diversity
within
America.
D.In
other
words,America
is
a
nation
where
there
is
unity
in
diversity.
E.Thus,one
needs
to
abandon
one’s
culture
to
be
considered
“American”.
F.They
serve
to
develop
the
various
ethnic
groups
to
create
a
new
American
culture.
G.The
other
theory,which
is
also
used
to
describe
American
society,is
the
melting
pot.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
At
one
time
or
another
in
your
life
you
have
probably
done
origami,even
if
it
was
just
making
a
paper
airplane
or
something
more
complicated
like
a
paper
crane.The
chances
are
that
as
you
did
it,you
reflected
on
how
inventive
this
traditional
art
is.Animals,boxes,flowers,boats:
it
all
can
be
created
from
a
single
square
or
rectangular
sheet
of
paper
simply
by
folding
it.No
cutting,no
pasting.
But
did
you
ever
stop
to
think
how
the
same
techniques
might
be
applied
to
engineering?Equipment
that
could
be
of
real
practical
use?Origami
meets
the
demand
for
things
that
need
to
be
small
when
transported
and
large
when
they
arrive,like
the
everyday
umbrella.In
fact,origami-inspired
creations
have
already
flown
in
space;in
1995,Japanese
engineers
launched
a
satellite
with
solar
panels
folded
like
a
map.
“It’s
now
mathematically
proven
that
you
can
pretty
much
fold
anything,”
says
physicist
Robert
J.Lang,who
quit
his
engineering
job
eight
years
ago
to
fold
things
full
time.Lang,an
origami
enthusiast
since
age
six,advised
a
well-known
car
manufacturer
the
best
way
to
fold
an
airbag
into
a
dashboard.He
is
currently
working
on
a
space
telescope’s
lens
that,if
all
goes
according
to
plan,should
be
able
to
unfold
to
the
size
of
a
football
field.
At
the
other
end
of
the
scale,researchers
are
also
working
on
tiny
folding
devices
that
could
lead
to
breakthroughs
in
medicine
and
computing.There’s
no
doubt
that
computers
of
the
future
may
contain
tiny,folded
motors
or
capacitors
for
faster
processing
and
better
memory.
Applications
for
origami
engineering
go
further
than
many
of
us
might
imagine.“Some
day,”
says
MIT’s
Erik
Demaine,“we’ll
build
reconfigurable
(可重构的)
robots
that
can
fold
on
their
own
from
one
thing
into
another,like
Transformers.Too
much
like
science
fiction
to
be
true?Maybe—though
you
certainly
wouldn’t
want
to
bet
against
it.”

Ⅵ.读后续写
A
friend
of
mine
whose
name
was
John
Smith
had
a
bad
memory,which
made
him
famous.He
was
so
forgetful
that
he
sometimes
forgot
what
he
was
talking
about
in
the
middle
of
a
sentence.His
wife
had
to
constantly
remind
him
about
his
meetings,his
classes—even
his
meals!Once
he
forgot
he
had
eaten
breakfast
twice,at
home
and
at
school.His
wife
liked
to
remind
her
neighbours,“If
John
didn’t
have
his
head
tied
on,he
would
forget
that
too!”
Since
Smith
was
a
professor
at
a
well-known
university,his
forgetfulness
was
often
an
embarrassment
to
him.It
wasn’t
that
he
was
not
clever,as
some
critical
people
tended
to
say,but
just
very
very
absent-minded.
One
hot
summer
day,Professor
Smith
decided
to
take
his
children
to
a
seaside
town
about
a
three-hour
train
ride
away.To
make
the
trip
more
interesting
for
his
young
children,he
kept
the
name
of
the
town
a
secret.However,by
the
time
they
arrived
at
the
station,Smith
forgot
the
name
of
the
town
he
was
planning
to
visit.Luckily,a
friend
of
his
happened
to
be
in
the
station.He
offered
to
take
care
of
the
children
while
Smith
hurried
back
home
to
find
out
where
he
was
going.
The
professor’s
wife
was
surprised
to
see
him
again
so
soon.
“Oh,my
dear,I
forget
the
name
of
the
town.”
“What?You
forget
the
name?Maybe
one
day
you
will
forget
my
name!Now
I’ll
write
the
name
of
that
town
on
a
piece
of
paper,and
you
put
it
in
your
pocket
and
please,please
don’t
forget
where
you
put
it.”
Satisfied
that
she
had
solved
the
problem,she
sent
her
husband
off
again.Ten
minutes
later
she
was
astonished
to
see
him
outside
the
house
for
the
third
time.
Paragraph
1:
“What
is
the
matter
now?”
asked
his
wife.
Paragraph
2:
Hearing
the
cry,out
rushed
their
neighbours,trying
to
find
out
what
had
happened.
