(C)Special report: 30 Years of Reform(改革) &Opening Up
BEIJING, Dec. 18, 2008—It was very cold and windy yesterday, but visitors to the Beijing downtown area did not seem to be seeking the warmth of Wangfujing’s famous malls. Theirs interest was concentrated on something outdoors—a 200-meter-.long photo exhibition. The 800 pictures mark the 30th anniversary(周年纪念日)of China’s reform and opening up.
The exhibition had plenty to attract their attention: photos from the past 30years, which show the surprising change in people’s lives.
Cao Xufang, a 57-year-old driver, seemed lost as he thought about the life in the 1970s shown by a black-and-white photo. The driver of a food company retired in 1992, and like many other people in the rural areas, he left to work in the capital. “Of course our life is much better now,” Cao told China Daily. “ I have been working almost everywhere in Beijing and seen the rapid growth(快速发展) in suburban areas such as Shunyi and Tongzhou.”
Xu Dongdong was born just five years before 1978 and can remember clearly what life was like 30 years ago.
“When I was little, we couldn’t afford to eat rice, only corn cakes,” the doctor from Heilongjiang Province said.
The young people born after the 1980s also found the photos interesting. Du Xiaomin, a 22-year-old a saleswoman who was there with a friend, said, “Our life cannot be better. When I was a child, I used to feel excited for days after eating out at KFC. But now KFC is just like a small restaurant to me.”

Great changes in my hometown
More than twenty years ago, my hometown was just a small, old and poor town. Most of people were farmers. There were few factories. The people didn’t have enough food to eat and wore old clothes. They had a hard life.
Great changes have taken place in the past thirty years. The people have found a lot of ways of making money. Now there are many tall buildings. They are very beautiful. Roads are wide and clean. People can take buses or drive their own cars to go to work. Many people have cell phones and personal computers. People’s living conditions have improved a lot.
Thanks to the government, my hometown is becoming more and more beautiful.
