[17]双十一+美国大选
Can’t buy me love: Singles’ Day?
Today is China’s unofficial but lucrative shopping holiday. On Singles’ Day—11/11—Alibaba and other Chinese retail giants offer discounts to celebrate singledom, raking in sales that dwarf those of Prime Day, one of Amazon’s biggest shopping bonanzas. This year Alibaba kicked off early with a Singles’ Day pre-sale last month. Expect records to be broken. Chinese shoppers will probably spend more than $40bn on Alibaba alone. American retailers, whose home economy is still in recovery from the covid-19 slump, are trying to get on Chinese consumers’ dance cards. Nike is even dropping a Singles’ Day version of its signature shoe, the Air Jordan. Thanks to tensions between the two countries, however, American retailers may not be as popular as they would hope. A survey by AlixPartners, a consulting firm, revealed that two-thirds of Chinese consumers plan to prioritise domestic brands this Singles’ Day, and more than half will reduce spending on American goods.

The great heffalump hunt: the GOP v democracy
Joe Biden has won the popular vote by more than 5m. When the counting is all?done, he will probably have won 306 electoral votes (his total currently stands at 279). Yet while a few elected Republicans have congratulated Mr Biden, most have remained silent or supported Mr Trump’s effort to reverse the results through litigation. Mr Trump’s campaign has filed lawsuits based on tenuous claims of voter fraud in five states that Mr Biden won. None has yet been successful, and in several states even a successful suit would not shift enough votes to overturn the result. Republicans may believe they are simply humouring Mr Trump. But his administration has yet to sign a letter to formally begin a presidential transition, which usually happens within a day of the election being called. An astounding 86% of his voters believe Mr Biden’s victory was illegitimate. His sowing of distrust in elections may prove his most damaging legacy.
