A sobering discovery: safely expelling alcohol
When it comes to sobering up, science has had little to offer. The liver’s metabolism cannot be hurried. But a new method, described in?Scientific Reports, uses the lungs instead. It has long been known that hyperventilation, or deep and fast breathing, expels gaseous alcohol. But hyperventilation reduces blood carbon-dioxide levels, causing dizziness and fainting. The new method uses a simple device to keep blood CO2 levels stable: isocapnic hyperpnea, in the jargon. The contraption is decidedly low-tech, comprising a mask, a self-inflating bag and a small tank of CO2. The wearer hyperventilates, while inhaling replacement CO2 to remain conscious. Tests on five young men revealed that the method eliminates alcohol at least three times faster than liver metabolism alone. The most immediate application would be to treat life-threatening alcohol poisoning. But given how common it is to have a few too many, wider uptake looks soberingly likely.

Warm RCEPtion: the world’s biggest trade deal
The 15 Asian countries that on Sunday signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in a virtual ceremony hosted from Hanoi broke some records. RCEP is the world’s largest plurilateral trade agreement, covering about 30% of the world’s population, trade and GDP—even though a 16th putative member, India, withdrew a year ago. It joins up free-trade agreements between the ten-member Association of South-East Asian Nations and other Asia-Pacific countries: Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Its terms are unambitious, constituting no dramatic liberalisation of regional trade. But, mid-pandemic, RCEP is a boost to the global economy, as well as to the standing of ASEAN. The big winner is China. It can present itself as committed to trade liberalisation at a time when America is still pursuing a trade war and seems relatively disengaged from the region. China, meanwhile, is expanding its economic, political and strategic influence across Asia.
