IV. 阅读理解
一、阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
The Leaning Tower of Pisa
Three million people visit Pisa each year. They come to see a bell tower that leans, famously known as the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
The tower looks as if it might fall at any time. In fact, some visitors stop at the tower just long enough to take a picture before hurrying away. Other visitors climb the 294 steps to the top and bravely enjoy the view. Engineers say that the visitors are safe—at least for now. But the tower does lean. And every year it leans a tiny bit more.
So what makes the tower lean? The soil beneath the tower is a mixture of clay, sand and water, which is not firm enough to give the tower a strong foundation. Even before its competition, the heavy tower began to sink into the soft soil, and then continued to do so over many centuries.
Can anything be done about the tower? Yes. Italian engineers have several plans. They don’t want to make the tower straight—they just want to keep it from leaning any further. So all the plans call for a new foundation that won’t sink. But a new foundation can’t be built while the tower is resting on the old one. The tower must be raised. And it must rest on something while the new foundation is being built.
The tower could be raised with jacks (千斤顶). One plan calls for 15 of them to be placed around the tower. Each of the jacks would be on its own foundation. And each of them could lift 1,000 tons while the new foundation is being built.
The Italian engineers are searching for the best plan to save the tower. But many Italians refuse to believe that the old tower is in danger. “It leans and leans,” they say. “But it will never fall down.” The engineers want to make sure that it won’t.
( ) 1.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. A heavy tower must have a solid foundation.
B. The tower leans because of its weight and weak foundation.
C. The soil is a mixture of clay, sand and water.
D. The foundation is not deep enough.
( ) 2.Which of the following is closer to the weight of the leaning tower?
A. About 13,000 tons. B. About 15,000 tons.
C. About 15,500 tons. D. About 16,000 tons.
( ) 3.What does the underlined word mean?
A. Be relaxed. B. Be supported by.
C. Be buried with. D. Be left.
( ) 4.What is the biggest challenge in stopping the tower from leaning further?
A. It is hard to rest the tower while building a new foundation.
B. Many Italians are strongly against the plan.
C. It takes a lot of money to build a new foundation.
D. The old foundation is too deep and solid to dig out.
( ) 5.Which statement is correct according to the text?
A. Many Italians firmly believe the leaning tower will never fall down.
B. The engineers are trying their best to make the leaning tower straight.
C. The leaning tower is out of danger now with the help of engineers.
D. The best solutions have been found to stop the tower from leaning further.
二、根据文章内容回答下列问题。
In Search of the Amber Room
Frederick William I, the King of Prussia, could never have imagined that his greatest gift to the Russian people would have such an amazing history. This gift was the Amber Room, which was given this name because several tons of amber were used to make it.
In fact, the room was not meant to be a gift. It was originally designed for the palace of Frederick I. However, the next King of Prussia, Frederick William I, to whom the Amber Room belonged, decided not to keep it. In 1716 he gave it to Peter the Great. Thereafter, the Amber Room became part of the czar’s winter palace in St Petersburg.
Later, Catherine II had the Amber Room moved to a palace outside St Petersburg where she spent her summers. She told her artists to add more details to it. In 1770, the room was completed the way she wanted.
In September 1941, the Nazi army was nearing St Petersburg. This was a time when Germany and Russia were at war. Before the Nazis could get to the palace, the Russians were able to remove some of the furniture and small art objects from the Amber Room. However, the Nazis then secretly stole the room itself. In less than two days, 100,000 pieces were put inside twenty-seven wooden boxes. The boxes were then put on a train for K?nigsberg, a German city on the Baltic Sea. After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery.
In 1979, the Russians and the Germans decided to work together to build a new Amber Room at the previous location. However, it took much more time and money than expected. In the end, by carefully studying old photographs and drawings, it took 40 experts more than 20 years to recreate the room. Fortunately, it was finished in time for the 300th birthday of St Petersburg in 2003.

听下面一段独白,回答第13至15题。这段独白读两遍。
Welcome to our programme—Culture Express. Today we will find out more about the Red Square in Russia. It is a very important part of Russia’s past and present.
As the centre point of Moscow, this square has seen many historic events, including many important ceremonies. Its importance in Russian history placed it on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1990, together with the Kremlin. However, besides its historic value, the beauty of the architecture around the square, such as the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral, is another major attraction of Red Square for its many visitors. It is interesting to note that the square isn’t actually “red”, and it wasn’t named for the red buildings that surround it. The name comes from the Russian word “krasnyi”, which used to mean “beautiful”, and has only more recently come to mean “red” in the modern Russian language.
Thank you for listening.
