School backpacks have been a hot topic in China recently. Some Chinese parents buy hardcover school backpacks from Japan, although they can be as expensive as 5,000 yuan, according to Chinese newspaper Urban Express. These backpacks are popular because the hard cover helps hold books in place. This can help kids keep their balance and protect their spines (脊柱). But it turns out that the bags can barely fit in the students’ desks.
A good backpack is important for children’s health. “It can relieve (减轻) pressure from the shoulders,” says Dr Rob Danoff from the US. He also says students need a backpack that’s made for the child’s size. Cushioned (加垫的) backs and shoulder straps (带子) will help them avoid pain.
However, the biggest problem for school backpacks is that they are too heavy, noted Hou Weiguang, a doctor in Chengdu. In China, students have many textbooks and exercise books. The weight makes many kids suffer from side-bending (侧弯的) spines, Hou said. He suggests that a backpack should be no more than 15 percent of a child’s body weight to avoid pain or injury. That means if a student weighs 50 kg, the backpack should be less than 7.5 kg.
Parents need to make sure their kids only carry what they need. Schools and governments need to help too, added Zheng Yongshun, an education official from Hong Kong. He said schools should offer locker (储物柜) space and shared books so kids can carry fewer books.
29. Why are hardcover school backpacks popular?
A. Because they are made in Japan.
B. Because they are quite expensive.
C. Because they help protect kids’ spines.
D. Because they can perfectly fit into desks.
30. According to Paragraph 2, good backpacks should _____.
A. have cushioned backs B. put pressure on shoulders
C. be smaller than children D. have shorter shoulder straps
31. According to Hou, how heavy should a backpack be?
A. Less than 15 percent of a child’s body weight.
B. No more than 50 percent of a child’s body weight.
C. No more than 50 kg.
D. Less than 7.5 kg.
32. The last paragraph is written to offer tips on _____.
A. how to choose good backpacks
B. how to reduce the weight of backpacks
C. how to encourage students to share books
D. how to design lockers for students

How time flies! We just finished making our short film Summer. I made so many unforgettable memories at Toto’s Filmmaking Class. During the 7-day program, 50 students from China and South Korea were divided into groups to create our own films. South Korea’s CJ Corporation in Shenyang organized the program.
Summer tells the story of Annie and Dawn. Though Dawn is blind, they both dream of being pianists. They become best friends while working hard to realize their dreams. Through this movie, we want to tell the audience that friendship is important even when you are busy chasing (追逐) your dreams.
I played the role of Dawn in the movie. It was very challenging to act like a blind person without closing my eyes. After practicing over and over again at night, I finally got good at it!
We all worked hard to make the movie. Our director worked until midnight every day. And he was very patient while teaching us how to act and shoot (拍摄). I remember shooting a traffic accident scene. Our director knelt (跪下) on the ground to show us how to do it. The actresses had to fall to the ground about 20 times to get the right shot. It was very hot and dry and the ground was hard, but we never gave up.
On Aug 1, our movie was shown at CJ CGV cinema in Shenyang. I got the Best Acting Award. Our team took the highest award – the Best Movie Award. We were so excited that we almost cried.
I learned a lot that week. It is hard to make a movie, but if you try your best, you can do anything you set your mind to. I also made a lot of friends. I will never forget this summer.
33. What does the first paragraph tell us about the writer?
A. She just finished watching a movie called Summer.
B. She spent seven days on a filmmaking program.

34. According to the story, the movie Summer _____.
A. tells a story of a blind girl and a pianist
B. shows the importance of having dreams
C. places great importance on friendship
D. focuses on the difficulties that blind people have
35. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How they picked their actors and actresses.
B. How they shot a traffic accident scene.
C. Why they had to shoot one of the scenes many times.
D. How hard they worked to make the movie.
36. What do we know from the story?
A. The writer was the director of the movie Summer.
B. Summer was shown in many theaters in China.
C. The movie Summer proved to be a success.
D. It is not that hard to make your own movie.

Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) once made history by taking bites of red romaine lettuce (长叶莴苣). They became the first humans to eat food that was grown entirely in space.
The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called “Veggie”, which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, the astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes (消毒纸巾) and then ate it with some salad dressing.
“It was one small bite for man, one giant leap (飞跃) for... our journey to Mars,” one astronaut, Scott Kelly, later posted on social media.
Space vegetables are a part of the NASA experiment called “Veg-01”, a study on how plants grow without the effects of Earth’s gravity (重力). It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
“If we’re ever going to go to Mars someday, we’re going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable (自给自足的) in its food supply (供应),” said Kelly.
Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help keep astronauts alive, NASA said.
Veg-01 started in May 2014. The first batch (一批) of vegetables took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check.
After making sure they were safe to eat, astronauts planted a second batch on July 8. They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it.
Astronauts usually only get vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS. Now with vegetables grown in space, they can eat them whenever they want.
37. Astronauts made history by _____.
A. working on the ISS B. eating space-grown lettuce
C. cooking real food in space D. building a small greenhouse.
38. What is Veg-01?
A. It is the name of the greenhouse on the ISS.
B. It is a NASA project for exploring Mars.
C. It is a NASA experiment on growing plants in space.
D. It is a NASA experiment on providing oxygen in space.
39. According to Kelly, why is growing fresh plants in space important?
A. Because it provides people with healthier food.
B. Because it can help astronauts with their journey to Mars.
C. Because it provides astronauts with enough oxygen.
D. Because it cuts the cost of delivering food to the ISS.
40. What is the main idea of the story?
A. The success of growing vegetables in space.

In most classes, students sit at desks and listen to teachers in a classroom. But in a new class at Chapman Middle School (CMS) in Kansas, US, students are leaving the blackboards behind for blue skies and green grass.
They are actually taking an outdoor life class. It’s not a typical (典型的) class, but teachers are trying it out.
“We want kids to experience the outdoors,” the class’ teacher John Harris said.
Twenty-six students attend the semester-long class. The class includes four parts: archery (射箭), hunting safety, survival skills (生存技能) and fishing. Students will also discuss how to protect natural resources.
Before Harris’ class this year, archery teacher Andy Fewin taught a 9-week outdoor life class. All CMS students took it.
“It gets kids involved (参与) in something other than sitting and playing video games,” Fewin said.
Harris shares the same idea. He believes everyone needs to enjoy life and get outside.
“The outdoor life class aims to get the kids interested in coming to school, really enjoying their class time and understanding the big picture,” Harris said.
But he said everyone needs to finish their other work first. “It really teaches them to focus and pay attention in class. If they don’t, then they’ll miss out on the fun things we’re doing,” he said.

My thoughts on working a part-time job
As students, we all look forward to holidays, when we can finally have time to relax and enjoy ourselves.
However, it’s common for teenagers in other countries to make use of their holidays to work part-time jobs. I think it is a great way to spend the holidays. First, they can make some money instead of asking their parents for money when they want to buy something. It also provides them with opportunities to gain some work experience and learn to deal with strangers.
Actually, I am quite interested in working a part-time job. But my parents won’t allow me to do it. They are worried about my safety, as well as the effect it may have on my studies. Later when I enter college, I will certainly find myself a part-time job.
