Table manners in England(Sample)
Last year I went to England as an exchange student for two weeks. The biggest problem for me was not the language, but the cultural differences between the two countries. Table manners in England impressed me most.
My host family is a Christian family, so before starting dinner, they crossed their hands and silently prayed to God. Then dinner began. Each person had two forks, two spoons and a knife, with a napkin beside the

right hand as well. The small ones (tableware) were used for desserts, while the larger ones were for common dishes. When I saw how complicated the European’s tableware were, I was kind of confused at first. But as time passed by, I began to get used to it.
What’s more, when they require something such as sauce or milk, they should say “please” and “thank you” to show their appreciation to others.

Finally, they were supposed to pass the things they needed instead of reaching by themselves. I think this is quite different from our culture, because my parents always prefer me to get the things I need by myself, so that I do not have to trouble others at a dinner table.
Although there are much cultural differences, we try to understand and respect each other’s customs.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do!
