在复合句中充当时间状语的从句叫时间状语从句，它用来说明主句动作发生的时间。时间状语从句通常由when, while, before, after, since, till/until, as soon as, whenever等连词引导。本期我们先学习由when, while, before和after引导的时间状语从句。
★ when/while引导的时间状语从句
when和while都可表达“当……时”之意，但两者在用法上有所不同：
when引导的时间状语从句中的谓语动词既可以是瞬间动词，也可以是延续性动词。如：
I will tell you about that thing when I meet you. 我见到你的时候会告诉你那件事情的。
When I was in high school, I was always a top student in my class. 我上高中时，一直是班里的尖子生。
while引导的时间状语从句中的谓语动词通常是延续性动词。主从句的动作一般同时发生。如：
Mum was preparing for dinner while I was cleaning the room. 我打扫房间的时候妈妈在准备晚饭。
★ before/after引导的时间状语从句
before意为“在……前”，after意为“在……后”。如：
Write the phone number down on a piece of paper before you forget it. 在你忘记这个电话号码前把它写在一张纸上。
I will call you after I hear from Jack. 我收到杰克的信后会打电话给你。
注意：
当主句和从句的主语一致时，可以省略从句中的主语，构成when/while/before/after + V-ing结构。如： Don’t leave the door of the kitchen open while ? (you are) cooking. 你做饭的时候别开着厨房门。

由since, till/until, as soon as和whenever引导的时间状语从句。
★ since和till/until引导的时间状语从句
since意为“自从……以来”，一般情况下，从句中的谓语动词用一般过去时，主句中的谓语动词用现在完成时。如：
Jack has made a lot of friends since he went to junior high. 自从上初中以来杰克已经交了很多朋友。
till/until意为“直到……时；到……为止”，表示动作或状态一直持续到某一时刻。用在句中时两者常常可以互换。但在句首时，通常用until。如：
Until 2016, my uncle lived in Canada. 到2016年为止，我叔叔一直住在加拿大。
当表示过去情况时，主从句均用一般过去时；当表示将来情况时，主句用一般将来时，从句常用一般现在时。如：
Millie listened to the radio till/until she fell asleep. 米莉听广播一直到睡着。
Take it easy, Tony. Your aunt will wait for you at the airport until/till she meets you. 放心吧，托尼！你阿姨会一直在机场等你，直到她接到你。
当主句中的谓语动词是瞬间动词时，必须用否定形式，即not … until结构，意为“直到……才……”。如：
I won’t give you this toy until my mother buys me a new one. 直到我妈妈给我买一个新玩具我才会把这个给你。
★ as soon as和whenever引导的时间状语从句
as soon as意为“一……就”，强调主句的动作紧跟着从句的动作发生。如果主句用一般将来时，从句常用一般现在时。如：
I’ll send you an email as soon as I finish the work. 我一完工就给你发邮件。
whenever意为“每当；任何时候”，相当于every time。如：
My parents are by me whenever I need help. 每当我需要帮助的时候，我的父母都在我身边。
