第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)
第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
More than 2,000 years ago, when the last shovelful (一铲) of dirt fell on the Terracotta Warriors, it was thought that they would never see the sunlight again and would spend the rest of their “lives” guarding and protecting the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shi Huang, who died in 210 BC.
But things got better for these clay soldiers. Ever since they were discovered in Xi'an in 1974, by a group of farmers; they've been able to see the bigger world—traveling from one museum to the next.
They are now on display in New York at Discovery Times Square, reported The New York Times.
However, the story doesn't end here. The 2,000 soldiers found so far are estimated (估计) to be only one quarter of the total number. Moreover, scientists haven't yet dared to touch the central tomb, which is believed to contain the body of the emperor himself.
“Partly it's out of respect for the elders,” explained Kristin Romey, consultant for the exhibition. “But they also realize that nobody in the world right now has the technology to properly go in and excavate it.”
This is true. According to ancient writings, the emperor's tomb is circled by rivers of liquid mercury which is deadly harmful to people but can keep the body in good condition. Studies of the soil around the tomb also found a large amount of mercury. This makes exploring the tomb very dangerous.
The other reason is that they are afraid of the damage they might cause by opening the tomb.
“When we began excavating ‘the soldiers’, the minute they faced the air and sunlight, the paint just went off,” Romey told the Fox News.
But he believes that the solution will come when science highly develops. Perhaps a robot can be sent into the tomb first to investigate and help find out the best way to protect it.
In the end, scientists and historians must think twice about how to find the way against the damage their digging might cause. Romey said, “You have to destroy stuff in order to learn about it.”
21.What is the point of the passage?
A.To tell about the mysteries of Qin Shi Huang's tomb.
B.To analyze why archaeology is a destructive science.
C.To introduce the Terracotta Warriors exhibition in New York.
D.To explain the risks of further excavating Qin Shi Huang's tomb.
22.What can we learn from the passage?
A.It is estimated that about 10,000 clay soldiers were buried with Qin Shi Huang in his tomb.
B.The decision whether to open the tomb is likely to depend on technological progress.
C.The deadly harmful mercury was used by Qin Shi Huang to keep grave robbers away.
D.Scientists won't excavate Qin Shi Huang's tomb until they find good ways to keep the body in good condition.
23.The underlined word “investigate” in the last but one paragraph probably means ________.
A.explore B.arrange
C.take over D.settle down

Famous art museums have one of the largest collections of art under one roof.
Located in New York City's Museum Mile area, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has over two million works of art within its permanent collection, which is divided into 19 sections of interest. The Met's American paintings section also has one of their earliest sculptures from 1870 on display. Look around the walls of your classroom. Do you see pictures or paintings? Most of the art on show was probably created by yourself and your classmates, using imagination and your own hands.
Each year in Toronto thousands of school children make the best use of their imaginations and their creative abilities in workshops provided by an organization called the Inner City Angels. These children work directly with professional (专业的) artists on different art programs.
Natalie McHaffie is one of the many professional artists who work with the Inner City Angels. “My purpose is to teach the children about design,” she says. “Once they learn how to put things together, they can use that knowledge for other things they may want to do, such as making a kite or designing a house.”
Recently Ms McHaffie worked with 16 children at St. Bernard School to create a wall painting in the hallway leading to the kindergarten classroom. Together they designed and did the wall painting during one school week.
When Ms McHaffie first met the student artists, she told them, “We must do a painting that will not only please the kindergarten kids but will also offer them information.”
Each of the 16 students was asked to imagine and draw ideas for the painting. After discussing the different ideas together, they chose the theme (主题) “The Four Seasons.”
Finishing the painting, four of the student artists had something to say about their experience.
Alfea:“You learn more when you do it yourself. As you go along you keep finding out things you didn't know before.”
Mauro:“I like working in a group because you get more done than if you work alone.”
Paolo:“It's been fun working in a group, not the same kind of exciting fun as when you're playing basketball. When you do art, it makes you feel peaceful.”
Paulina:“You can learn from working with the other kids. By talking to each other you can find ways to do things.”

D.create paintings on the walls of their classrooms
28.Ms McHaffie hopes the children ________.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
There have been many great inventions, which have changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.
For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800's the world started to change. There was little unknown land in the world. People did not have to explore any more. They began to work so as to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and the_radio. These all became a big part of our_life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter in 1909; movies with sound in 1926; the computer in 1928; and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people had been wearing.
The middle part of the_20th_century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live longer lives. By the 1960's most people could expect to live at least 60.
By this time most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire to explore again. The world was known to human_beings but the stars were not. Man began to look for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space. In 1969 man took his biggest step away from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though.
New inventions in_the_future will allow us to do things we have never dreamt of.

Text 1
W:Excuse me, Mr Smith.
M:What's the matter? I don't want to be disturbed while I'm talking to Mr Black.
W:But you have a meeting scheduled with the engineer.
M:Call him, please, and put off our meeting.
Text 2
W:I'm hungry. Do you have any cookies? I ate my last one this morning.
M:No. But there are some nuts in the living room.
Text 3
M:So many magazines on my desk. Who did this?
W:Maybe it was Justin. He said you were going to refer to them to finish your design.
M:Oh, that's right. I did ask him to bring the latest magazines to me. I completely forgot.
Text 4
W:When on earth did you get home last night? 11:30 or 12 o'clock?
M:Not really, my watch told me it was only 11:20 when I opened the door.
Text 5
M:What have you got there?
W:It's my sun lamp. I'm taking it down to the electrical repair shop to be fixed. There's something wrong with the wiring.
Text 6
M:How did you do on the exam, Nancy?
W:I passed, but I didn't do so well. The essay question was the worst part for me. How about you?
M:I did all right on everything except for the essay question, too. I wasn't really prepared to write about Arthur Miller's plays. We studied his plays for only a few days. I didn't think it would be on the test.
W:Me, either. I thought Mr Green would ask us something about Mark Twain's novels or maybe Walt Whitman's poems. I studied most of the material on these two writers and didn't spend much time on Arthur Miller's plays.
Text 7
M:Hello. Could I speak to Mr Smith's secretary, please?
W:Yes. It's Mr Smith's secretary speaking.
M:Oh, hello, this is Mr Green's Service in London.
W:What can I do for you?
M:Well, my boss Mr Green is coming out to Tokyo in the first week of December and I want to check whether you know he is coming.
W:I did already know about it. He's coming for the conference.
M:That's right, and he would really like to take up Mr Smith's offer to visit the factory.
W:When would it suit you? The conference will be running from Tuesday to Thursday.
M:Er, well, either Monday or Friday would be good. Which day do you think would be better for Mr Smith?
W:Er, as far as he's concerned, Monday will be fine.
M:Oh, that's great.
Text 8
W:Could you check my tires, sir? I think they need air.
M:No problem, madam. Well, they are just all right. Should I check the air in the spare tire as well?
W:I don't think so. It's brand new.
M:Should I clean the windshield (挡风玻璃) for you?
W:Yes, please. I also want you to check the radiator (散热器).
M:All right, madam. Gosh, there is hardly any water in the radiator. That's dangerous, madam. You could break down because of the heat, you know.
W:Please fill it up with water then.
M:OK, madam.
W:Do you take credit cards or checks?
M:Sorry, we don't. It's ten dollars in total.
W:OK. Here you are.
M:Thank you. Have a nice drive.
Text 9
M:So you studied art at college?
W:Right. But I gave up my job as a painter when my daughter was born. I thought about teaching art classes part?time, but instead I started making dolls for my daughter. I love acting, so I often invented plays for the dolls. I once used the dolls to give a show at my daughter's party. The children loved it. As a result, other parents asked me to do the show at their children's parties.
M:It must be a lot of work for you.
W:Yes. I love making the dolls, but I decided that I needed someone to help me with the shows. Luckily my neighbor Lena was willing to perform with me. Her husband recorded the music to go with the shows. It would be impossible to do everything on my own.
M:Have you ever had any problems?
W:Only once. I wrote a story about a lion. The children were afraid of the lion and cried. I was worried the parents might complain, but in fact they laughed about it. After that, whenever I've invented a new story, I show it to my daughter. She always tells me exactly what she thinks of it.
M:And the shows continue to be successful?
W:Yes, I have a wide range of different shows. They become so successful that I could do one every day, but I don't want to do that. The reason the shows have become popular is that I love every minute of every show, and so other people love them too.
Text 10
M:The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City, was the palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the early 15th century, large?size construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following year, the capital of Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Twenty?four emperors of the Ming and the Qing dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the buildings were changed into a museum. Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public.
The Palace Museum is about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east, with a 10?meter?high wall around. In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Province, while in the Qing Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were from Fangshan and other places.
The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
After 1949, the Palace Museum is listed as one of the important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese government.

Winter counts of the Lakota Tribe, still alive old recording picturing, Guangming News,10 January, 2019. North Dakota, US—How did people record important moments without cameras long ago?
There were a lot of people making special drawings to help them recall important moments. Among those people were Native Americans of the Lakota tribe.
Every year, Lakota leaders decided which event was most important. A Lakota artist was then asked to draw a special picture of that event. Because each year's picture was decided on during the winter, the drawings became known as winter counts.
Winter counts were drawn on animal skins. Later, the drawings were done on paper. The pictures told the history of the tribe. Each year, the newest winter count was added to the Lakota collection of pictures from earlier times. That helped people keep track of the years. Today, winter counts are important records of the Lakota's past.
