A
Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.
Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.
For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (鹰), the farmers' stores of corn and grain were destroyed by mice. Why? Because hawks eat mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the mice multiplied quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.
Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.
21.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Save the Animals B.Useful Animals
C.Laws for Animals D.Animals in Danger
22.Animals are important to us mainly because ________.
A.they give us a source of food
B.they are beautiful and lovely
C.they keep the balance of nature
D.they give us a lot of pleasure
23.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.people have known the importance of animal protection for a long time
B.animals play an important role in people's life
C.the number of hawks is on the decrease
D.many countries passed laws forbidding the killing of any animal
B
Lions are family animals and truly social in their own communities. They usually live in groups of 15 or more animals called prides. Prides can be as small as 3 or as big as 40 animals. In a pride (一群), lions hunt food, raise little lions, and defend their territory (领地) together.
In prides the females do most of the hunting and care for little lions. Usually all the females in a pride are related—mothers, daughters, grandmothers, and sisters.
Each pride generally will have no more than two adult males. While the females usually live with the pride for life, the males often stay for only two to four years. After that they go off on their own or are evicted (逐出) by other males who take over the pride.
When a new male becomes part of the pride it is not unusual for him to kill all the little lions, making sure that all future little lions will have his genes.
The main job of males in the pride is defending the pride's territory. A male's loud roar (吼叫), usually heard after sunset, can be heard as far as eight kilometers. The roar warns off intruders (入侵者) and helps round up small members of the pride.
Hunting generally is done in the dark by the females. They often hunt in groups of two or three, using teamwork to surround, and kill other animals. Females aren't the most successful of hunters, because they usually score (收获) only one kill out of several tries. After the kill the males usually eat first, females next and the little lions get what's left. Males and females defend against any outside lions that attempt to join their pride.
24.It can be learned from the passage that the male lion ________.
A.usually lives with its family members for life
B.can frighten its enemies with its loud roar
C.is the main hunter in its family
D.raises baby lions as the female lion does
25.Who eat first after the lion group got the food?
A.Little lions. B.Female lions.
C.Male lions. D.Old lions.
26.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.it is only male lions in a pride that defend their territory
B.usually all the females in the pride are relatives
C.male lions help females when hunting
D.lions hunt their food usually in the daytime

I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2?to 3?week?old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all—LUNCH!The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.

A.Efforts made in vain.
B.Getting injured in his work.
C.Feeling uncertain about his future.
D.Creatures forced out of their homes.
28.Why was the author called to Muttontown?
A.To rescue a woman.
B.To take care of a woman.
C.To look at a baby owl.
D.To cure a young owl.
29.What made the chick calm down?
A.A new nest. B.Some food.
C.A recording. D.Its parents.
30.How would the author feel about the outcome of theevent?
A.It's unexpected. B.It's beautiful.
C.It's humorous. D.It's discouraging.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle_Paul,_my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guest room of the farm_house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn't going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don't be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don't get_lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

M:Working with elephants is one of the most popular volunteer activities in Thailand. And for good reason, these amazing creatures are huge, cute, and very intelligent. Often elephants are looked as gentle animals, but it's good to remember that this isn't always the case. Sadly, many elephants have faced terrible treatment, beaten into giving performances or overworked at money?hungry tourist attractions. A terribly?treated elephant can become angry and kill people if it feels threatened.
Now, as for volunteering for elephant protection, it can be a very valuable experience. The important thing is to find the right opportunity. There are a number of elephant reserves and parks, especially in Thailand. There you can do meaningful work to improve the lives of elephants.

Wild Conservation Day again! All wildlife, are you OK? Why do you still look so sorrowful? From the picture, we can find some reasons. Why is the number of animal species declining year by year? Apparently animals have become victims of fashion industry. Animal skin has been used to make fashionable clothes and these clothes sell at a high price. So some greedy people begin to kill animals in large quantity. This irresponsible behavior not only breaks the balance of nature but also endangers the living environment of human beings.
Something must be done to stop this illegal action. We believe “no buying, no killing”. First, we must make laws to protect these animals in danger. Second, we must take some measures to protect animals effectively. Animals are our friends and part of our environment. Third, we should raise people's awareness to protect animals and our environment. In this way, we can build a harmonious society and ensure a sustainable development.
Everyone is welcome to join us to protect wild animals.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Afraid that I might hurt the lovely small creature, I automatically let out a cry to stop my horse. However, it became scared and started to run like crazy. “Don't let go of the rope! Keep calm!” yelled Dad. I followed what he told me. To my relief, it stopped slowly. But before we jumped off the horses, we found that we had been off the beaten track and got lost.
Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted and hungry, I wondered if we could find our way back. I kept shouting for help, hoping my shouts could be heard by someone, but there was no reply. Dad sounded a little worried as he reminded me to calm down. It was then that my mind raced. “Listen, Dad, the rushing river water,” I shouted excitedly, “we can return to the farm_house down the river.” Before long, we caught sight of the lights in the distance. We knew we were safe. What a thrilling vacation we had!
