Messina正在纽约东河堤上晨跑。突然有什么东西引起了他的注意——一名男子尖叫着寻求帮助,因为水流把他从海堤中拉了下去。David
Blauzvern
和John
Green先跳入河中,接着Gary
Messina也跳入河中,三个人再加上后来到来的救生船,终于把那名男子救上来。
【21题详解】

for因为(并列连词);C.
as由于;D.

screamed
for
help”可知,后面应该是表示原因,此处是as引导的原因状语从句,for引导表示原因的并列句时,常用逗号隔开。故选C。

For
a
long
time
I
saw
happiness
as
a
huge
banner(旗帜)across
the
finish
line
of
a
long
race.
I
felt
that
only
when
I
41
certain
things
could
I
finally
be
happy
in
my
life.
Most
of
the
time
I
felt
like
a
tortoise(乌龟)
believing
that
being
slow
and
steady(稳定的)
would
win
the
race.
At
other
times
I
would
act
like
a
42
trying
different
side
roads
at
a
dangerous
43
hoping
to
reach
that
banner
a
little
faster.
Gradually,
I
began
to
see
that
no
matter
how
long
I
raced
towards
it,the
banner
was
never
any
44
.I
finally
decided
to
sit
down
and
take
a
break.
It
was
then
that
I
saw
my
45
sitting
beside
me.
It
had
been
with
me
as
I
46
hard
to
support
my
family,as
I
played
with
my
children
and
heard
their
47
and
even
when
I
was
48
with
my
wife
at
my
side
looking
after
me.
It
had
been
with
me
as
I
raced
towards
that
stupid
banner.
I
just
didn't
have
the
49
to
see
it.
There
is
an
old
Chinese
proverb
that
says,
“Tension
is
who
you
think
you
should
be.
50
is
who
you
are.”
Perhaps
we
all
should
stop
our
race
towards
the
51
life
we
think
we
should
have
and
52
the
life
we
have
now.
Happiness
will
never
be
found
under
some
banner
far
away.
It
will
be
found
in
your
own
heart,
soul
and
mind.
It
will
be
found
when
you
53
that
others
love
you
just
as
you
do.
Don't
be
a
tortoise
or
a
rabbit
when
it
comes
to
your
happiness.
Be
a
playful
puppy(小狗)
and
carry
your
stick
of
54
with
you
everywhere
you
go.
Take
yourself
out
of
the
race
and
realize
that
when
it
comes
to
love
and
happiness,
you
are
55
there.

【16题详解】
由上三句“We

a

another.
Then
we're

with.”(我们说服自己,结婚,生个孩子,然后再生个孩子后,生活会更好。然后我们对孩子们还不够大感到沮丧,等他们长大了我们会更满足。在那之后,我们很沮丧我们有处于青春期的孩子要处理。)可知,人们总在期望自己度过一个阶段后,生活会更好,比如结婚生子后生活会变好和孩子大了后生活会变好,本空也与“度过一个人生阶段后,生活会更好、会幸福”这一思想有关,即青春期的孩子长大后,走出青春期后,生活会变好,作为父母的我们会幸福,承接上文,D选项“当他们走出那个阶段,我们一定会幸福的。”切题。故选D项。
【17题详解】
由上两段讲的“度过一个人生阶段后,生活会更好、会幸福”和下一句“If
not
now,when?”(如果不是现在,什么时候?)可知,上文一直在讲人们总期待着生活以后会变好、会幸福,但下文提及“不现在幸福,什么时候幸福”,说明现在才是最幸福的时候,承接上下文,F选项“事实是,没有比现在更幸福的时候了。”切题。故选F项。
【18题详解】
由上三句“For
a
long
time
it
had
seemed
to
me
that
life
was
about
to
begin—real
life.
But
there
was

Then
life
would
begin.”(很长一段时间以来,我觉得生活即将开始真正的生活。但总有一些障碍。然后生活就开始了。)可知,Alfred
D.
Souza觉得真正生活还未开始时,障碍出现了,然后生活就开始了,说明障碍就是自己的生活,承接上文,A选项“我终于明白,这些障碍就是我的生活。”切题。故选A项。
【19题详解】
由第一二段讲的“度过一个人生阶段后,生活会更好、会幸福”,第三段中的“If
not
now,when?”(如果不是现在,什么时候?)和上一句“This
perspective
has
helped
me
to
see
that
there
is
no
way
to
happiness.”(这种观点帮助我认识到,没有通往幸福的路。)可知,人们总期待着生活以后会变好、会幸福,但幸福是从现在开始的,并没有通往(未来)幸福的路,现在变得幸福就是通往幸福的路,承接上文,E选项“幸福本身就是路。”切题;该选项中的“Happiness
is
the
way”对应上文中的“way
to
happiness”。故选E项。
【20题详解】
此处是全文总结句。由“So,stop
waiting
until
you
finish
school,until
you
go

to
school,until
you
have
kids,until
your
kids

【解析】
【分析】
这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了中国传统文化的影响。
41题详解】
考查副词。副词修饰整个句子。故填
fantastically。
【42题详解】
考查介词。
have
a
great
impact
on
“对有很大影响”为固定短语。
故填on
。
【43题详解】
考查代词。
through为介词,后接名词Kung
fu作宾语,空处用it指代Kung
fu。故填it
。
【44题详解】
考查名词复数。aspect为可数名词,且有some
other修饰,所以用复数aspects。故填aspects。
【45题详解】
考查冠词。a
mix
of“.的混合”为固定短语。故填a。
【46题详解】
考查时态。分析句子可知,
Confucianism为主语,且句子为一般现在时,所以谓语为单数形式。故填continues。
【47题详解】
考查过去分词。分析句子可知,谓语动词是comes,故give用非谓语动词,ideas与give在逻辑上是被动关系,所以空处填过去分词given。故填given。
【48题详解】
考查形容词比较级。句意:这种长处来自于儒家《四书》中的思想,它建立在更为古老的时期编纂的《五经》的思想基础上。根据语境,此处表示“更为古老的”,且有even修饰,应使用形容词ancient的比较级,故填more。
【49题详解】
考查宾语从句。分析句子可知,learn后接宾语从句,宾语从句缺少主语,所以用连接代词what作主语。故填what。
【50题详解】
考查动词不定式。take
steps
to
do
sth“采取措施做某事”为固定短语,用不定式做目的状语。故填to
further。
【点睛】what常用来引导名词性从句,即主语从句,宾语从句,表语从句和同位语从句.what在引导名词性从句时有两个重要的特点:
一是它在相应的名词性从句中一定有含义,常表示“什么”,“所的”,“的样子”等。
二是它在相应的名词性从句中一定做成分,而且常做主语,宾语或表语。
分析句子可知,learn后接宾语从句,宾语从句缺少主语,所以用连接代词what作主语。故小题9填what。

【解析】
这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了作家Jo

【1题详解】

Here

【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据After

about

sister—Eri,
a

who
either
won’t

can’t
stop

and
Mari,
a

Dark中讲述了Eri和Mari的故事。故C选项正确。
【3题详解】
细节理解题。由Gone

the
horror
story
is
brilliant.可知,这是一个恐怖故事。故D选项正确。
B
“You
can
use
me
as
a
last
resort(选择),
and
if
nobody
else
volunteers,
then
I
will
do
it.”
This
was
an
actual
reply
from
a
parent
after
I
put
out
a
request
for
volunteers
for
my
kids’
lacrosse(长曲棍球)
club.
I
guess
that
there’s
probably
some
demanding
work
schedule,
or
social
anxiety
around
stepping
up
to
help
for
an
unknown
sport.
She
may
just
need
a
little
persuading.
So
I
try
again
and
tug
at
the
heartstrings.
I
mention
the
single
parent
with
four
kids
running
the
show
and
I
talk
about
the
dad
coaching
a
team
that
his
kids
aren’t
even
on
…
At
this
point
the
unwilling
parent
speaks
up,
“Alright.
Yes,
I’ll
do
it.”
I’m
secretly
relieved
because
I
know
there’s
real
power
in
sharing
volunteer
responsibilities
among
many.
The
unwilling
parent
organizes
the
meal
schedule,
sends
out
emails,
and
collects
money
for
end-of-season
gifts.
Somewhere
along
the
way,
the
same
parent
ends
up
becoming
an
invaluable
member
of
the
team.
The
coach
is
able
to
focus
on
the
kids
while
the
other
parents
are
relieved
to
be
off
the
hook
for
another
season.
Handing
out
sliced
oranges
to
bloodthirsty
kids
can
be
as
exciting
as
watching
your
own
kid
score
a
goal.
Still,
most
of
us
volunteers
breathe
a
sigh
of
relief
when
the
season
comes
to
a
close.
That
relief
is
coupled
with
a
deep
understanding
of
why
the
same
people
keep
coming
back
for
more:
Connecting
to
the
community(社区)
as
you
freely
give
your
time,
money,
skills,
or
services
provides
a
real
joy.
Volunteering
just
feels
so
good.
In
that
sense,
I’m
pretty
sure
volunteering
is
more
of
a
selfish
act
than
I’d
freely
like
to
admit.
However,
if
others
benefit
in
the
process,
and
I
get
some
reward
too,
does
it
really
matter
where
my
motivation
lies?
4.
What
can
we
infer
about

parent
from
her
reply
in
paragraph
l?
A.
She
knows
little
about
the
club.
B.
She
isn’t
good
at
sports.
C.
She
just
doesn’t
want
to

D.
She’s
unable
to
meet

5.
What
does
the
underlined
phrase
“tug

in
paragraph
2
mean?
A.
Encourage
teamwork.
B.
Appeal
to
feelings.
C.
Promote
good
deeds.
D.
Provide
advice.
6.
What

主旨大意题。本文通过一份调查结果显示美国人喜欢独自用餐的趋势,并总结了人们选择独自用餐的原因,故选A。
D
You’ve
probably
seen
ads
for
apps
promising
to
make
you
smarter
in
just
a
few
minutes
a
day.
Hundreds
of
so-called
“brain
training”
programs
can
be
bought
for
download.
These
simple
games
are
designed
to
challenge
mental
abilities,
with
the
ultimate
goal
of
improving
the
performance
of
important
everyday
tasks.
But
can
just
clicking
away
at
animations
of
swimming
fish
or
flashed
streets
signs
on
your
phone
really
help
you
improve
the
way
your
brain
functions?
Two
large
groups
of
scientists
and
mental
health
practitioners
published
consensus
statements,
months
apart
in
2014,
on
the
effectiveness
of
these
kinds
of
brain
games.
Both
included
people
with
years
of
research
experience
and
expertise
in
cognition
(认知),
learning,
skill
acquisition,
neuroscience
and
dementia
(痴呆).
Both
groups
carefully
considered
the
same
body
of
evidence
available
at
the
time.
However,
they
issued
exactly
opposite
statements.
One
concluded
that
“there
is
little
evidence
that
playing
brain
games
improves
potential
broad
cognitive
abilities,
or
that
it
enables
one
to
better
handle
a
complex
condition
of
everyday
life.”
The
other
argued
that
“a
large
and
growing
body
of
evidence
shows
that
certain
cognitive
training
methods
can
significantly
improve
cognitive
function,
including
in
ways
that
generalize
to
everyday
life.”
Brain
training
programs
are
an
attractive
shortcut,
a
“get
smart
quick”
scheme.
But
improving
or
maintaining
cognition
is
likely
not
going
to
be
quick
and
easy.
Instead,
it
may
require
a
lifetime
—
or
at
least
an
extended
period
–
of
cognitive
challenge
and
learning.
If
you’re
worried
about
your
cognition,
what
should
you
do?
First,
if
you
do
engage
in
brain
games,
and
you
enjoy
them,
please
continue
to
play.
But
keep
your
expectations
realistic.
If
you’re
playing
only
to
obtain
cognitive
benefits,
instead
consider
other
activities
that
might
be
as
cognitively
inspiring,
or
at
least
more
rewarding
—
like
learning
a
new
language,
for
instance,
or
learning
to
play
a
musical
instrument.
12.
How
did
the
scientists
make
their
findings?
A.
By
collecting
statistics
from
research.
B.
By
observing
available
evidence.
C.
By
recording
cognitive
changes.
D.
By
comparing
the
differences.
13.
The
second
study
could
possibly
lead
to
_____.
A.
solutions
to
cognitive
difficulty
B.
promotion
of
puzzle
games
C.
new
ways
to
improve
cognitive
function
D.
further
research
into
brain
training
14.
What
does
the
author
think
of
puzzle
games?
A.
It
is
completely
illegal.
B.
It
is
of
much
practice.
C.
It
is
hardly
acceptable.
D.
It
is
of
little
value.
15.
What
could
most
probably
be
discussed
in
the
following
paragraph?
A.
The
examples
of
cognitive
activities.
B.
The
tips
on
playing
cognitive
games.
C.
The
disadvantages
of
puzzle
games.
D.
The
affection
for

There
was
great
excitement
on
the

this

scientists
managed
to

The

was
directed
into
an
area
known
as

Because
of
excellent
weather

and
extremely
strong
signals,
Venusian
scientists
were
able
to
get
valuable
information
about
the
feasibility
of
a
manned
flying
saucer
landing
on
Earth.
A
press
conference
was
held
at
the

Institute
of
Technology.
“We
have
come
to
the
conclusion,
based
on
last
week's
satellite
landing,”
Prof.
Zog
said,
“that
there
is
no
life
on
Earth.”
“How
do
you
know
this?”
the
science
reporter
of
the
Venus
Evening
News
asked.
“For
one
thing,
Earth's
surface
in
the
area
of
Manhattan
is
composed
of
solid
concrete
and
nothing
can
grow
there.
For
another,
the
atmosphere
is
filled
with
carbon

other
deadly
gases
and
nobody
could
possibly
breathe
this
air
and
survive.”
“Are
there

“Take

of

We
don't

but
it

us
a
lot
of
trouble
and
we
shall
have
to
make
further

before
we
send
a
Venus
Being
there.
Over
here
you
will
notice
what
seems
to
be
a
river,
but
the
satellite
findings
indicate
it
is
polluted
and
the
water
is
unfit
to
drink.”
“Sir,
what
are
all
those
tiny
black
spots
on
the
photographs?”
“We're
not
certain.
They
seem
to
be
metal
particles
that
move
along
certain
paths.
They
give
gases,
make
noise
and
keep
crashing
into
each
other.”
“Prof.

why
are
we
spending
billions
and
billions
of
zilches
to
land
a
flying
saucer
on
Earth
when
there
is
no
life
there?”
“Because
if
we
Venusians
can
learn
to
breathe
in
the

then
we
can
live
anywhere.”

or
a
queen
in
mind.
When
it
comes
to
structures
that
are
both
majestic
and
well?defended,
the
classic
European
castle
is
the
best
example
of
design.
Across
the
ages
castles
changed,
developed,
and
eventually
fell
out
of
use,
but
they
still
command
the
fascination
of
our
culture.
Castles
were
originally
built
in
England
by
Norman
invaders
in
1066.
As
William
the
Conqueror
advanced
through
England,
he
defended
key
positions
to
secure
the
land
he
had
taken.
The
castles
he
built
allowed
the
Norman
lords
to
draw
back
to
safety
when
threatened
by
English
rebellion.
Castles
also
served
as
bases
of
operation
for
offensive
attacks.
Troops
were
summoned
to(召集),
organized
around,
and
deployed(部署)
from
castles.
In
this
way
castles
served
both
offensive
and
defensive
roles
in
military
operations.
Not
limited
to
military
purposes,
castles
also
served
as
offices
from
which
the
lord
would
administer
control
over
his
kingdom.
That
is
to
say,
the
lord
of
the
land
would
hold
court
in
his
castle.
Those
that
were
socially
beneath
the
lord
would
come
to
report
the
affairs
of
the
lands
that
they
governed
and
pay
tribute
to
the
lord.
They
would
address
conflicts,
handle
business,
feast,
and
enjoy
festivities.
In
this
way
castles
served
as
important
social
centres
in
medieval
England.
Castles
also
served
as
symbols
of
power.
Built
on
important
and
noticeable
sites
overlooking
the
surrounding
areas,
castles
constantly
appeared
in
the
background
of
many
peasants'
lives
and
served
as
a
daily
reminder
of
the
lords'
strength.
Now,
castles
no
longer
serve
their
original
purposes.
However,
the
remaining
castles
receive
millions
of
visitors
each
year
from
those
who
wish
to
experience
the
glory
of
a
time
long
passed.

an
assumption
B.

C.
making

D.
giving
arguments
29.
Why
did
William
the
Conqueror
build
castles?
A.
He
wanted
to
celebrate
his
victory.
B.
He
wanted
to
remind
people
of
his
influence.
C.
He
wanted
to
live
peacefully
with
the
English.
D.
He
wanted
to
use
them
to
his
military
advantage.
30.
Which
of
the
following
is
a
way
the
lord
would
adopt
to
show
his
power?
A.
Dealing
with
conflicts
in
his
castle.
B.
Building
his
castle
in
an
obvious
place.
C.
Carrying
out
social
activities
in
his
castle.
D.
Commanding
peasants
to
live
near
his
castle.
31.
What
attracts
people
to
visit
castles
today?
A.
The
splendid
history.
B.
The
special
architecture.
C.
The
tense
atmosphere.
D.
The
superior

D
Most
people
follow
others
blindly
mainly
under
the
effect
of
peer(同龄人)
pressure.
Some
people
also
feel
it
safe
to
follow
a
large
number
of
people.
In
some
rare
cases
it
might
be
right
to
follow
the
crowd(群众),
but
in
most
cases
this
can
be
one
big
mistake.
Actually
there
are
reasons
why
we
shouldn't
follow
the
crowd
blindly.
According
to
a
study,
people
tend
to
follow
the
crowd
when
they
aren't
sure
about
the
direction
they
should
take.
This
means
a
large
number
of
people
could
be
following
others
without
understanding
what's
right
and
what's
wrong!This
attracts
more
people
to
follow
the
crowd
and
the
result
is
that
most
people
move
in
a
certain
direction
even
if
it
isn't
right.
A
man
who
wants
to
be
successful
always
hopes
for
others'
guidance
and
he
usually
follows
the
same
path
of
most
people,
but
the
question
this
man
never
asks
himself
is:Are
all
of
those
people
successful?Of
course
not!If
you
want
to
follow
a
crowd,
then
follow
a
successful
one.
However,
in
real
life
you'll
only
find
one
successful
person
among
hundreds
of
people,
and
that's
why
following
the
crowd
makes
no
sense
at
all.
Most
people
act
without
thinking
wisely.
If
you
always
follow
others
because
they're
greater
than
you
in
number,
then
sooner
or
later
you'll
discover
that
you're
making
decisions
you
might
regret
later.
However,
should
we
never
follow
the
crowd?No.
I'm
not
trying
to
say
you
should
never
follow
the
crowd,
but
instead
I'm
just
asking
you
to
think
wisely
before
you
make
a
decision.
If
you
find
others
are
right,
there
is
no
problem
in
following
them,
but
if
you
have
doubts
about
the
direction
they're
moving
in,
don't
follow
them
blindly.
32.
According
to
the
text,
most
people
follow
others
blindly
mainly
because
________.
A.
they
are
affected
by
their
peers
B.
they
don't
believe
in
themselves
C.
they
feel
it
safe
to
stay
with
others
D.
they
are
weaker
than
other
people
33.
What
can
we
learn
from
Paragraph
4?
A.
It
needs
some
time
to
think
wisely.
B.
We
shouldn't
regret
what
we
have
done.
C.
We
should
think
wisely
before
deciding
whether
to
follow
others.
D.
Making
others
follow
us
is
better
than
following
others.
34.
Which
of
the
following
will
the
author
agree
with?
A.
It
is
wrong
to
follow
other
people.
B.
Those
who
follow
others
won't
succeed.
C.
Only
those
foolish
people
will
follow
others.
D.
One
should
use
his
head
before
following
others.
35.
What
is
the
text
mainly
about?
A.
Effects
of
following
others.
B.
Benefits
of
making
wise
decisions.
C.
Reasons
why
most
people
follow
others.
D.
Reasons
why
people
shouldn't
follow
others
blindly.

I
was
never
very
neat,while
my
roommate
Kate
was
extremely
organized.
Each
of
her
objects
had
its
place,
but
mine
always
hid
somewhere.
She
even
labeled
everything.
I
always
looked
for
everything.
Over
time,Kate
got
neater
and
I
got
messier.
She
would
push
my
dirty
clothing
over,
and
I
would
lay
my
books
on
her
tidy
desk.
We
both
got
tired
of
each
other.
War
broke
out
one
evening.
Kate
came
into
the
room.
Soon,
I
heard
her
screaming,
"Take
your
shoes
away!
Why
under
my
bed!"
Deafened,
I
saw
my
shoes
flying
at
me.
I
jumped
to
my
feet
and
started
yelling.
She
yelled
back
louder.
The
room
was
filled
with
anger.
We
could
not
have
stayed
together
for
a
single
minute
but
for
a
phone
call.
Kate
answered
it.
From
her
end
of
the
conversation,
I
could
tell
right
away
her
grandma
was
seriously
ill.
When
she
hung
up,
she
quickly
crawled
under
her
covers,sobbing.
Obviously,that
was
something
she
should
not
go
through
phone.
All
of
a
sudden,
a
warm
feeling
of
sympathy
rose
up
in
my
heart.
Slowly,
I
collected
the
pencils,
took
back
the
books,
made
my
bed,
cleaned
the
socks
and
swept
the
floor,
even
on
her
side.
I
got
so
into
my
work
that
I
even
didn't
notice
Kate
had
sat
up.
She
was
watching,
her
tears
dried
and
her
expression
one
of
disbelief.
Then,
she
reached
out
her
hands
to
grasp
mine.
I
looked
up
into
her
eyes.
She
smiled
at
me,
"Thanks."
Kate
and
I
stayed
roommates
for
the
rest
of
the
year.
We
didn't
always
agree,
but
we
learned
the
key
to
living
together:
giving
in,
cleaning
up
and
holding
on.

One
in
every
five
young
people
has
a
sleep
problem,
so
you're
not
alone.
Getting
enough
sleep
has
become
as
important
as
eating
vegetables
and
exercising
regularly.
It's
very
important
for
your
body.
Most
young
people
only
get
seven
hours
of
sleep
each
night,
when
they
actually
need
nine
hours.
And
making
up
for
lost
sleep
during
the
week
by
sleeping
on
weekends
doesn't
really
work.
In
fact,
sleeping
late
on
weekends
may
actually
do
you
more
harm
than
good,
if
you
have
sleep
problems.
What
happens
if
you
don't
get
enough
sleep?
If
your
sleep
problem
continues
for
a
few
nights,
you
could
suffer
serious
problems.
Lack
of
sleep
can
affect
learning
and
memory.
Worse,if
your
sleep
difficulties
last
a
long
time,that
could
lead
to
anxiety.
Therefore,you've
got
to
have
some
healthy
sleep
habits.
Below
are
some
suggestions:
Go
to
bed
at
the
same
time—including
weekends,
if
possible.
Wake
up
around
the
same
time
every
morning.
When
you
sleep
late
just
one
morning
during
the
week,
it
may
disturb
your
body
clock.
This
will
make
it
hard
for
you
to
sleep
that
night.
Do
something
relaxing
before
going
to
bed.
Exercise
during
the
day.
Don't
exercise
right
before
going
to
bed.
Avoid
drinking.
Alcohol
makes
you
excited.
This
prevents
you
from
falling
asleep
or
wakes
you
up
during
the
night.
Don't
smoke.
Smoking
is
always
bad
for
the
body.
Smoking
before
bedtime
keeps
you
awake.
If
trying
these
tips
over
a
couple
of
weeks
does
not
help
you,
consult
your
doctor.
Do
not
take
any
medicine
without
first
asking
your
doctor.
Many
of
them
have
strong
side
effects.

C.
follow
a
fixed
timetable

9.
According
to
the
suggestions,
which
of
the
following
makes
it
easier
for
you
to
fall
asleep?

Getting
up
earlier
than
usual
in
the

B.
Listening
to
soft
music

D
I
love
snakes.
My
mom
definitely
does
not.
When
she
was
a
kid,
snakes
used
to
hide
in
warm
spots
under
the
furniture.
So
she
grew
up
afraid
she'd
step
on
a
snake.
I
grew
up
hoping
I'd
see
one
outside!
Lots
of
people
who
are
afraid
of
snakes
have
never
even
seen
one.
So
where
does
our
fear
come
from?
Scientists
wonder
about
this
too.
Their
experiments
with
adults,
kids,
and
even
babies
show
that
it's
complicated.
In
tests
with
pictures,
people
picked
out
snakes
faster
than
they
could
find
flowers,
frogs,
and
caterpillars.
It
wasn't
just
snakes,
though.
People
also
found
spiders
and
angry
faces
faster
than
"safe"
things
like
flowers.
It
seems
like
we
find
things
that
might
be
dangerous
to
us
faster
than
things
that
aren't
People
also
learn
to
fear
snakes
faster
than
we
learn
to
fear
many
other
things.
We
take
our
hints
from
other
people's
scared
voices
and
faces.
Some
scientists
think
we've
evolved
this
way
faster
to
see
snakes
and
faster
to
learn
to
fear
them.
After
all,
if
we
had
to
be
bitten
by
a
snake
to
learn
that
it's
dangerous,
we
might
learn
our
lesson
too
late.
So
why
does
it
matter
if
we're
afraid
of
snakes?
It
may
not
matter
much
to
us,
but
it
matters
to
snakes.
People
protect
animals
they
like,
not
animals
they
fear.
Snakes
may
not
be
as
cute
as
dolphins,
but
they're
just
as
important
to
the
environment.
Snakes
eat
insects
that
are
pests
to
humans.
Snakes
are
also
food
for
other
animals,
so
when
we
kill
snakes,
we're
hurting
other
creatures
too.
How
do
we
get
past
our
fears
to
give
snakes
a
chance?
Scientists
did
a
study
recently
where
students
of
your
age
went
on
a
field
trip,
Guides
helped
them
find
and
capture
snakes
in
the
forest.
Everyone
could
safely
touch
and
hold
a
snake.
It
turns
out
that
snakes
aren't
so
bad
when
you
get
to
know
them.
Most
people
who
were
afraid
of
snakes
before
the
field
trip
weren't
afraid
afterward.
In
fact,
snakes
even
became
some
students'
favorite
animal.
Hmm,
maybe
I
should
take
my
mom
on
the
next
field
trip.
Remember:
Always
respect
snakes,
whether
you're
afraid
of
them
or
not.

?
I
really
love
this
saying,
“
Love
is
endless
and
unlimited.”
For
me,
there’s
a
story
behind
it.
When
I
used
to
hand
out
chocolates
with
beautiful
paper
bags,
my
friends
always
told
me
,
“You
are
wasting
time
and
money.
No
one
here
believes
in
nameless
gifts.”
To
be
honest,
I
have
noticed
that
people
here
do
donate
in
temples.
They
give
food
to
the
poor,
and
provide
clothes
and
other
things
for
whoever
is
in
need.
??
?I
think
maybe
I
am
the
one
who
starts
to
think
of
the
dogs
in
our
neighborhood.
When
I
moved
into
this
new
community,
I
noticed
that
there
were
two
street
dogs.
They
were
wounded
and
homeless,
and
everyone
used
to
stay
away
from
them
and
hit
them
when
they
came
any
closer.
They
were
becoming
thinner
and
thinner
and
they
would
did
of
hunger
sooner
or
later.
???
But
my
habit
of
loving
dogs
has
changed
all
these
things.
I
began
to
walk
close
to
them
and
give
them
food
regularly.
When
I
touched
their
heads
and
gave
love
to
them,
I
could
see
tears
in
their
eyes.
My
friends
noticed
,
and
now
even
kids
and
elders
in
the
community
provide
them
with
food
and
also
love
them.
I
am
really
glad
to
see
that
I
saved
their
lives.
???
What
I
started
will
lead
to
beautiful
memories
with
them.
They
enjoy
playing
with
me
and
they
even
have
a
particular
pose
when
they
see
me.
I
see
a
sparkle
in
their
eyes
and
a
smile
on
their
faces.
They
are
priceless
for
me.
16.Why
did
the
author’s
friends
discourage
him
to
hand
out
chocolates?
A.Because
people
didn’t
need
gifts.

it
cost
too
much
money.
C.Because
people
didn’t
trust
strangers.
D.Because
dogs
could
not
eat
chocolates.

of
the
dogs
in
the
community
at
first?
A.lovely.
B.Frightening.
C.Exciting.
D.Unpleasant.
18.How
did
people
react
to
the
author’s
kindness
to
the
dogs?
A.They
laughed
at
him.
B.They
praised
him
for
that.
C.They
began
to
care
for
the
dogs.
D.They
offered
him
food
for
the
dogs.

the
author
sound
when
telling
the
story?
A.Pitiful.

Mole
Day
Mole
Day
is
celebrated
annually
on
Oct.
23
from
6:02
am
to
6:02
pm.
It
celebrates
Avogadro’s
Number
(approximately
6.021023
),
which
is
a
basic
measuring
unit
in
chemistry.
The
first
Mole
Day
took
place
in
1991
and
has
been
honored
every
year
since.
The
concept
of
a
celebratory
day
was
created
by
Maurice
Oehler,
a
retired
high
school
chemistry
teacher.
It
aims
to
develop
interest
in
chemistry,
encouraging
schools
around
the
globe
to
celebrate
Mole
Day
with
various
activities
related
to
chemistry.
Fibonacci

marks
Fibonacci
Day,
a
special
day
that
celebrates
the
man
known
as
Leonardo
Fibonacci
who
developed
a
mathematical
concept
called
the
Fibonacci
Sequence
(斐波那契数列),
in
which
every
number
is
the
sum
of
the
previous
two
numbers.
So,
for
example,
11/23
marks
the
day
because
1+1
equals
2,
and
then
1+2
equals
3
(the
date
being
the
23rd).
It
may
be
somewhat
difficult
to
grasp,
but
the
concept
is
not
entirely
theoretical.
Square
Root
Day
Square
Root
Day
is
a
holiday
that
occurs
when
the
month
and
day
are
square
roots
of
the
last
two
digits
of
the
year:
e.g.
2/2/2004
and
3/3/2009.
The
last
Square
Root
Day
was
4/4/2016
and
the
next
one
will
be
5/5/2025.
The
holiday
was
created
by
a
high
school
teacher
Ron
Gordon
in
Redwood
City,
California,
who
noticed
that
an
upcoming
date
(9/9/1981)
represented
a
square
root.
Pi
Day
The
granddaddy
of
mathematical
and
scientific
holidays,
however,
falls
every
year
on
Mar.
14.
The
date,
3/14,
represents
the
first
three
numerals
in
the
calculation
of
pi;
so
the
date
is
known
annually
as
Pi
Day.
Pi
Day
was
founded
in
1988
by
physicist
Larry
Shaw
working
at
the
Exploratorium
in
San
Francisco.
The
event
featured
the
eating
of
various
pies,
tossing
pizza
pie
dough
and
parades
and
speeches.

It
may
seem
as
if
Mother's
Day
was
invented
by
a
company
named
Hallmark,
but
people
have
been
taking
time
on
the
calendar
to
give
a
shout-out
to
Mom
for
a
long
time.
The
Greeks
and
Romans
had
mother
goddess
festivals
—
although
their
celebrations
didn't
involve
the
menfolk
taking
their
underappreciated
mothers
out
to
dinner.
A
more
recent
tradition
was
Mothering
Sunday,
which
developed
in
the
British
Isles
during
the
16th
century.
On
the
fourth
Sunday
in
April,
young
men
and
women
who
were
living
and
working
apart
from
their
families
were
advised
to
return
to
their
mothers’
houses.
Mother's
Day
as
it
is
observed
in
the
United
States
started
in
the
1850s
with
Ann
Jarvis,
a
West
Virginia
woman
who
held
“Mothers'
Work
Days”
to
promote
health
and
hygiene(
卫
生
)
at
home
and
in
the
workplace.
During
the
Civil
War,
Jarvis
organized
women
to
improve
sanitary
conditions
for
soldiers
on
both
sides,
and
after
the
war
she
became
a
peacemaker,
furthering
the
cause
by
bringing
together
mothers
of
Union
and
Confederate
soldiers
and
promoting
a
Mother's
Day
holiday.
Jarvis's
work
inspired
another
19th-century
woman,
Julia
Ward
Howe.
In
1870
Howe
published
her
“Mother's
Day
Proclamation”,
which
envisioned(设想)
the
day
not
as
appreciation
of
mothers
by
their
children
but
as
an
opportunity
for
women
to
exercise
their
collective
power
for
peace.
Howe
started
holding
annual
Mother's
Day
celebrations
in
Boston,
her
hometown,
but
after
about
a
decade
she
stopped
footing
the
bill
and
the
tradition
faded
away.
It
was
Jarvis's
daughter
Anna
who
succeeded
in
getting
Mother’s
Day
recognized
as
a
national
holiday.
After
her
mother
died,
in
May
1905,
Anna
started
holding
yearly
ceremony
on
the
anniversary
and
conducting
a
tireless
PR
campaign
to
have
the
day
made
a
holiday.
In
1908
she
succeeded
in
enlisting
the
support
of
John
Wanamaker,
the
Philadelphia
department
store
magnate
and
advertising
pioneer,
and
by
1912
West
Virginia
and
a
few
other
states
had
adopted
Mother's
Day.
Two
years
later,
President
Woodrow
Wilson
signed
a
resolution
declaring
the
second
Sunday
in
May
a
national
holiday.
It
wasn't
long,
though,
before
whatever
ideals
the
day
was
supposed
to
celebrate
were
buried
under
an
amount
of
greeting
cards
and
candy.
By
the
1920s
Anna
Jarvis
was
campaigning
against
the
holiday
she
had
been
instrumental
in
creating.
“I
wanted
it
to
be
a
day
of
emotionalism,
not
profit,”
she
said.

role
in
creating
Mother's

A.
Ann

D.
Anna
Jarvis.
26.
Why
did
Anna
Jarvis
go
against
celebrating
Mother's
Day
in
the
1920s?
A.
Because
it
was
extremely
emotional.
B.
Because
the
festival
was
not
profitable.
C.
Because
the
celebrations
went
against
the

D.
Because
the

vaccine
(疫苗)
that
protects
against
one
of
the
main
common
cold
viruses
has
been
shown
to
be
safe
and
effective
in
a
clinical
trial
and
could
be
available
by
2024.
Respiratory
syncytial
virus
(RSV)
spreads
so
easily
that
more
than
90
per
cent
of
people
have
experienced
their
first
infection
(感染)
by
the
age
of
2.
It
usually
causes
cold-like
symptoms
but
can
lead
to
severe
illness
in
young
children
and
older
people.
All
around
the
world,
about
60,000
children
under
the
age
of
5
and
14,000
people
over
the
age
of
65
die
each
year
after
developing
the
virus.
Developing
vaccines
against
RSV
and
other
respiratory
viruses
has
been
difficult
because
the
respiratory
tract
(呼吸道)
is
a
surface
exposed
directly
to
the
outside
world,
says
Kirsten
Spann
at
the
Queensland
University
of
Technology
in
Australia.
“It’s
harder
for
antiviral
antibodies
(抗病毒抗体)
in
the
blood
to
reach
viruses
in
the
respiratory
tract,
or
even
know
they
are
there,
because
there
is
some
physical
separation,”
she
says.
In
recent
years,
however,
there
has
been
rapid
progress
in
finding
new
ways
to
improve
immunity
against
respiratory
viruses.
Several
RSV
vaccines
are
being
tested
in
clinical
trials,
including
one
made
by
German
company
Bavarian
Nordic.
Its
vaccine
is
designed
to
build
immunity
against
RSV
by
exposing
the
body
to
five
small
fragments(碎片)of
the
virus.
In
a
clinical
trial
involving
420
adults
aged
55
and
older,
a
single
injection
(
注
射
)
of
the
vaccine
in
the
upper
arm
increased
the
levels
of
RSV-fighting
antibodies
inside
the
nose
by
three
times
and
caused
no
serious
side
effects.
This
immune
response
lasted
for
six
months—enough
to
cover
a
winter
cold
season—and
was
restored
with
a
booster
shot
at
12
months.
The
results
are
promising,
but
more
research
is
needed
to
see
if
the
immune
response
is
strong
enough
to
prevent
RSV
infections,
says
Spann.
Bavarian
Nordic
is
now
planning
a
bigger
clinical
trial
of
its
RSV
vaccine
that
is
scheduled
to
begin
in
2021
and
will
involve
more
than
12,000
adults.
If
the
results
are
positive,
the
company
hopes
to
make
the
vaccine
available
by
2024.
The
firm
plans
to
offer
the
vaccine
to
children
too,
but
not
until
it
has
passed
clinical
trials
involving
people
in
this
age
range.

For
Western
designers,
China
and
its

have
long
been
an
inspiration
for
Western
creative.
“It’s

exhibited
140
pieces
of
China-inspired
fashionable
clothing
alongside
Chinese
works
of
art,
with
the
aim
of
exploring
the
influence
of
Chinese
aesthetics(美学)
on
Western
fashion
and
how
China
has
fueled
the
fashionable
imagination
for
centuries.
The
exhibition
had
record
attendance,
showing
that
there
is
huge
interest
in
Chinese
influences.
“China
is
impossible
to
overlook,”
says
Hill.
“Chinese

are
the

which

Jason
Wu
are
taking
on
Galliano,
Albaz,
Marc
Jacobs—and
beating
them
hands
down
in

and
sales,”
adds
Hill.
For
Hill,
it
is
impossible
not
to
talk
about
China
as
the
leading
player
when
discussing
fashion.
“The
most
famous
designers
are
Chinese,
so
are
the
models,
and
so
are
the
consumers,”
she
says.
“China
is
no
longer
just
another
market;
in
many
senses
it
has
become
the
market.
If
you
talk
about
fashion
today,
you
are
talking
about
China—its
influences,
its
direction,
its
breathtaking
clothes,
and
how
young
designers
and
models
are
finally
acknowledging
that
in
many
ways.”

D
Is
It
Worth
Buying
Organic
Food?
Organic
food,
grown
without
artificial
chemicals,
is
increasingly
popular
nowadays.
Consumers
have
been
willing
to
pay
up
to
twice
more
for
goods
with
organic
labels
(商标).
However,
if
you
think
paying
a
little
more
for
organic
food
gets
you
a
more
nutritious
and
safer
product,
you
might
want
to
save
your
money.
A
study
led
by
researchers
at
Stanford
University
says
that
organic
products
aren't
necessarily
more
nutritious,
and
they're
no
less
likely
to
suffer
from
disease-causing
bacteria,
either.
The
latest
results,
published
in
the
Annuals
of
Internal
Medicine,
suggest
that
buyers
may
be
wasting
their
money.
"We
did
not
find
strong
evidence
that
organic
food
is
more
nutritious
or
healthier,"
says
Dr.
Crystal
Smith-Spangler
from
Stanford.
"So
consumers
shouldn't
assume
that
one
type
of
food
has
a
lower
risk
or
is
safer."
For
their
new
study,
Smith-Spangler
and
her
colleagues
conducted
a
review
of
two
categories
of
research,
including
17
studies
that
compared
health
outcomes
between
consumers
of
organic
against
traditional
food
products,
and
223
studies
that
analyzed
the
nutritional
content
of
the
foods,
including
key
vitamins,
minerals
and
fats.
While
the
researchers
found
little
difference
in
nutritional
content,
they
did
find
that
organic
fruit
and
vegetables
were
20%
less
likely
to
have
chemicals
remaining
on
the
surfaces.
Neither
organic
nor
traditional
foods
showed
levels
of
chemicals
high
enough
to
go
beyond
food
safety
standards.
And
both
organic
and
traditional
meats,
such
as
chicken
and
pork,
were
equally
likely
to
be
harmed
by
bacteria
at
very
low
rates.
The
researchers
did
find
that
organic
milk
and
chicken
contained
higher
levels
of
omega-3
fatty
acids,
a
healthy
fat
also
found
in
fish
that
can
reduce
the
risk
of
heart
disease.
However,
these
nutritional
differences
were
too
small,
and
the
researchers
were
unwilling
to
make
much
of
them
until
further
studies
confirm
the
trends.
Organic
food
is
produced
with
fewer
chemicals
and
more
natural-growing
practices,
but
that
doesn't
always
translate
into
a
more
nutritious
or
healthier
product.
The
U.
S.
Department
of
Agriculture
(USDA)
states
that
"whether
you
buy
organic
or
not,
finding
the
freshest
foods
available
may
have
the
biggest
effect
on
taste."
Fresh
food
is
at
least
as
good
as
anything
marketed
as
organic.

whether
organic
food

traditional
food

farmers
C.
is
