Scientists

that
trees

Not
long
ago,
researchers
learned
some
surprising
things.
First
a
willow
tree
attacked
in
the
woods
by
caterpillars(毛虫)
changed
the
chemistry
of
its
leaves
and
made
them
taste
so
terrible
that
they
got
tired
of
the
leaves
and
stopped
eating
them.
Then
even
more
astonishing,
the
tree
sent
out
a
special
smell—a
sig?nal
(信号)
causing
its
neighbors
to
change
the
chemistry
of
their
own

and
make
them
less

Communication,

We

We

Bees

an

Scientists
from
the
University
of
East

and
Tyndall
Centre
for
Climate
Change
Research,
both
in
Britain,
did
the
study.
They
published
their
findings
in
Science
Magazine.21cnjy.com
Coral(珊瑚)
is
made

of
hundreds
of
thousands
of
organisms(生物体,有机体)
called
polyps.
Each
is
covered
with
cells(细胞)
filled
with
poison.
The
coral
uses
the
poison
to
defend
itself
and
to
capture
its
food.
Hard
coral
is
what
covers
reefs.
Soft
coral,
like
sponges
and
sea
fans,
live
on
hard
coral.
In
the
nineteen-
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)seventies,
hard
coral
covered
about
fifty
percent
of
the
average
reef(暗礁)
in
the
Caribbean.
Today,
the
researchers
say,
the
cover
is
down
to
ten
percent.
They
say
it
appears
nothing
like
this
has
happened
before
at
least
three-thousand
years.
Ocean
biologist
I
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)sabelle
Cote
took
part
in
the
study.
She
says
the
scientists
knew
there
were
serious
prob?lems
with
the
Caribbean
reef
system,
but
what
they
found
surprised
them.
They
based
their
findings
on
sixty-five
earlier
studies
that
examined
more
than
two-hundred-sixty
areas
of
reef
in
the
Caribbean
Sea.
At
first,
the
scientis
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ts
were
trying
to
learn
the
amount
of
destruction
that
ocean
storms
had
caused
to
coral
reefs
over
the
years.
But
the
researchers
decided
they
had
to
widen
their
study.
Miss
Cote
says
they
needed
to
be
able
to
compare
storm
damage
with
damage
from
other
forces.
The
study
found
tha
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)t
weather
conditions
have
played
a
part
in
the
decrease
of
Caribbean
coral.
But
the
sci?entists
say
human
activity
has
been
at
least
as
equally
destructive.
Overfishing
is
one
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)
problem.
Fish
eat
plants
that
live
on
coral.
The
fish
help
keep
a
balance
in
the
plant
life.
When
too
many
fish
are
caught,
some
plants
may
spread
too
fast
and
kill
the
coral.
Pollution
is
also
a
p
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)roblem.
So
too,
they
say,
is
the
flow
of
soil
into
rivers
that
feed
the
sea.
This
includes
soil
from
forests
that
have
been
cut
down.
For
coral
cells,
to
b
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)uild
a
reef
takes
tens
of
thousands
of
years.
Scientists
say
healthy
reefs
are
not
only
im?portant
for
nature.
The
many
different
kinds
of
marine
life
found
there
may
also
provide
materials
for
new
medi?cines.
The
scientists
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)
who
did
the
study
say
there
are
signs
of
recovery
in
some
areas
of
the
Caribbean.
But
they
say
they
do
not
know
if
this
new
coral
will
be
able
to
survive
any
better.

Comprehension:
(A)
Can
trees

Yes,

not
in
words.
Scientists
have
reason
to
believe
that
trees
do
communicate(交际)
with
each
other.
Not
long
ago,
researchers
learned
some
surprising
things.
First
a
willow
tree
attacked
in
the
woods
by
caterpillars(毛虫)
changed
the
chemistry
of
its
leaves
and
made
them
taste
so
terrible
that
they
got
tired
of
the
leaves
and
stopped
eating
them.
Then
even
more
astonishing,
the
tree
sent
out
a
special
smell—a
sig?nal
(信号)
causing
its
neighbors
to
change
the
chemistry
of
their
own
leaves
and
make
them
less
tasty.
Communication,
of
cour

doesn't
need
to
be

words.
We
can
talk
to
each

and
moving
our
hands.
We
know
that

Bees

recently
spent
two
years
in
the
Arctic
filming
the
series
Blue
Planet.
I
love
being
in
an
environment
that
hasn't
changed
for
20,000
years.
Of
course
it
is
freezing,
but
it
must
be
a
healthy
place
because
you
never
catch
colds.
When
I'm
filming,
I
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)like
to
really
feel
how
lonely
the
environment
is.
Filming
underwater
involves
cutting
through
thick
ice
and
diving
in
bed
to
a
line.
The
person
at
the
other
end
has
to
be
ready
to
pull
you
out
fast
if
necessary.
Originally
I
was
a
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)
research
diver
for
the
British
Antarctic
Survey
project,
but
for
me
science
lacked
excite?ment.
I'd
always
enjoyed
photography,
and
whenever
camera
teams
passed
through,
they
encouraged
me
to
watch
and
learn.
I
was
then
able
to
move
into
filming
in
1985
and
have
concentrated
on
Arctic
and
Antarctic
wildlife
ever
since.
I
prefer
to
be
face
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)
to
face
with
the
animals
I'm
filming.
I
haven't
got
in
the
water
with
killer
whales
yet,
but
I
plan
to.
Of
course,
it
is
dangerous
if
you
choose
the
wrong
moment.
They're
big
animals
and
can
move
fast,
so
I'd
be
stupid
to
film
them
searching
for
food!
I've
never
had
problem
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)s
with
polar
bears,
although
once
I
was
frightened
when
one
tried
to
get
into
my
tent.
Polar
bears
are
bold,
clever
and
dangerous.
But
I
made
this
one
see
I
wasn't
about
to
attack
it—I'm
sure
it
realized
I
wouldn't
hurt
it.
When
I
come
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)back
home
from
my
trips,
I
work
in
the
mornings
and
spend
the
afternoons
swimming
to
keep
fit.
Now
I'm
fifty;
filming
is
harder.
The
challenge
for
me
is
to
continue
to
deliver
high-quality
works.

A
new
study
shows
a
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)n
eighty
percent
decrease
of
hard
coral
in
the
Caribbean
Sea
over
the
past
thirty
years.
Scientists
from
the
University
of
East
Anglia
and
Tyndall
Centre
for
Climate
Change
Research,
both
in
Britain,
did
the
study.
They
published
their
findings
in
Science
Magazine.
Coral(珊瑚)
is
m
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ade
up
of
hundreds
of
thousands
of
organisms(生物体,有机体)
called
polyps.
Each
is
covered
with
cells(细胞)
filled
with
poison.
The
coral
uses
the
poison
to
defend
itself
and
to
capture
its
food.
Hard
coral
is
what
covers
reefs.
Soft
coral,
like
sponges
and
sea
fans,
live
on
hard
coral.
In
the
nineteen-se
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)venties,
hard
coral
covered
about
fifty
percent
of
the
average
reef(暗礁)
in
the
Caribbean.
Today,
the
researchers
say,
the
cover
is
down
to
ten
percent.
They
say
it
appears
nothing
like
this
has
happened
before
at
least
three-thousand
years.
Ocean
biologist
Isabel
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)le
Cote
took
part
in
the
study.
She
says
the
scientists
knew
there
were
serious
prob?lems
with
the
Caribbean
reef
system,
but
what
they
found
surprised
them.
They
based
their
findings
on
sixty-five
earlier
studies
that
examined
more
than
two-hundred-sixty
areas
of
reef
in
the
Caribbean
Sea.
At
first,
the
scie
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ntists
were
trying
to
learn
the
amount
of
destruction
that
ocean
storms
had
caused
to
coral
reefs
over
the
years.
But
the
researchers
decided
they
had
to
widen
their
study.
Miss
Cote
says
they
needed
to
be
able
to
compare
storm
damage
with
damage
from
other
forces.
The
study
found
that
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)weather
conditions
have
played
a
part
in
the
decrease
of
Caribbean
coral.
But
the
sci?entists
say
human
activity
has
been
at
least
as
equally
destructive.
Overfishing
is
on
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)e
problem.
Fish
eat
plants
that
live
on
coral.
The
fish
help
keep
a
balance
in
the
plant
life.
When
too
many
fish
are
caught,
some
plants
may
spread
too
fast
and
kill
the
coral.www.21-cn-jy.com
Pollution
is
also
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)
a
problem.
So
too,
they
say,
is
the
flow
of
soil
into
rivers
that
feed
the
sea.
This
includes
soil
from
forests
that
have
been
cut
down.
For
coral
cel
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ls,
to
build
a
reef
takes
tens
of
thousands
of
years.
Scientists
say
healthy
reefs
are
not
only
im?portant
for
nature.
The
many
different
kinds
of
marine
life
found
there
may
also
provide
materials
for
new
medi?cines.
The
scientists
w
(?http:?/??/?www.21cnjy.com?)ho
did
the
study
say
there
are
signs
of
recovery
in
some
areas
of
the
Caribbean.
But
they
say
they
do
not
know
if
this
new
coral
will
be
able
to
survive
any
better.
