Never forget where you come from
Many of us remember the touching television advertisement where the actor Iron Eyes Cody (经常出演印第安人形象的Hollywood演员) sheds a tear over litter(垃圾). Such Native images are often used to convey the idea of saving mother earth. People who accept this image find it difficult to bring together what they have seen of some reservations—shabby homes, broken cars, underfed dogs, weeds in winds, and coal strip mines. Those who most romanticize American Indians are the quickest to be disappointed and discover that things are not as good as they have once believed. However, Indians’ relationship with the land is much more complicated than those two black and white images which appeared in the television.
Historically, tribal people around the globe have had close ties with the earth. Lakota historian Vine Deloria, Jr., tells the story of the Ponca people who were taken from their range over a century ago and transported against their will to Oklahoma. Otherwise healthy, many Ponca wasted and died from no other clear cause than separation from their home. As Cheryl Crazy Bull says in this issue, “The land is our relative. Without land, tribal people lose their identity—the land along with language, spiritual beliefs, and social systems distinguishes tribal people from others.”
To many people in the United States, the Indian reservation is an embarrassment. It represents the American version of racial separation—a prison without walls where the government confined Indians to keep them apart from other Americans. To Indian people the reservation is home, regardless of what it looks like. They have spiritual, emotional, and family ties. Many of their relatives still live there or are buried there, and their creation stories are centered there.

The success of movies such , a Chinese interactive film released last week, could herald(标志) the start of a new type of films where the audience is in control.
Over 3.6 million Chinese netizens took part in the movie experiment on by selecting their favorite youth novel to be turned into a film last year. The audience also selected the script, director and actors , a story about a friend (named Zhang Wenli) coming to terms with the death of a friend.

Many of us do not like the things we see around us. For example, the bad habits of some people, the rude manners and even the air pollution. If you do not want the things you see around you, don’t just watch and hope it will change. Only lazy people might say that is the way things have been working and that is the way they are going to continually work. In fact, they won’t change themselves if you don’t do something to help them change.21世纪教育网21世纪教育网
Maybe some people want the whole country to change That is a far too enormous project. I think you can start by changing the small things around you.
Your habit should be the first thing to change. Change what you think about and change what you talk about. Change the things that get your attention before you plan to change a nation.
Can you remember how difficult it was for you to break a habit that you desired to break some years back Do you remember that habit of yours that you are still struggling to break If so, then you must fall in with the view that things are not just going to change by your magic thought.
As far as I am concerned, the best way I have changed people around me is that I changed myself. People are watching you. Some of them do not expect you to change, so your change is going to be like a miracle to them and will influence them. When you change, they will change. Just change yourself and see how many people will tell you later that you were the one who changed them. That is one simple way young people can change their surroundings.

A good dictionary is an invaluable tool for anyone who uses the written word and would like to do so more effectively and correctly. Are you familiar with the different kinds of dictionaries—and the services that they offer
There are three basic types of dictionary. They are the compact, historical and general purpose dictionary. The compact dictionary is, naturally, a small pocket sized variety that is somewhat limited in the range of its content. The historical dictionary, on the other hand, is an exhaustive(详尽的) volume that specializes in the history of words. The general purpose dictionary lies somewhere between these two extremes. This is the most common version that people would have in their home and is the best for everyday use. 21世纪教育网
The functions of the general purpose dictionary are to provide definitions, proper pronunciation, correct spelling and derivations as well as any restrictive labels attached to a word. Let’s consider these individually.
Definitions: Many words have more than one meaning. By using a dictionary you can determine which meaning applies to the sentence you are considering. Some dictionaries help you out further by giving sample phrases of correct word usages.
Pronunciation: Pronunciation of a particular word may vary from region to region, so a dictionary will give the generally accepted pronunciation.
Spelling: In the English language, words are often spelt quite differently to how they sound. Thank goodness for the spelling function of your dictionary.
Derivations: The study of word origin is a feature of your dictionary. This can bring words to life, and expand your knowledge base in a fascinating way.
Restrictive Labels: If a word is marked “colloquial” or “slang” it shouldn’t be used in formal settings. These labels, then, signal caution in their use.
Becoming more familiar with, and regularly consulting, your dictionary will open up the English language to you. As a result, your speech will be richer and your written communications more fluent. What a fine reward for a little time invested in your dictionary.
36. The “colloquial” or “slang” labels remind you that the words ________.
A. may be borrowed from other languages B. have strange pronunciations
C. are used in an informal way D. have some special meanings
37. You may get disappointed if you want to find ________ in a general purpose dictionary. 21世纪教育网
A. the origin of a new word B. the spelling of a word
C. examples of word usages D. the rules of grammar
38. Which function of the general purpose dictionary is similar to the main character of a historical dictionary
A. Pronunciation. B. Restrictive Labels.
C. Spelling. D. Derivations.
39. It can be inferred from the text that a compact dictionary is designed for _______.
A. teachers B. language learners
C. beginners D. dictionary collectors
40. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means that ________.
A. it’s worthwhile to spend some time consulting the dictionary
B. the more you use a dictionary, the more knowledge you will get
C. a proper dictionary is your good teacher
D. you will make fortune if you spend enough money on dictionary

Despite his death at the age of 25, Keats is one of the greatest English poets and a key figure in the Romantic Movement. He has become the epitome(化身) of the young, beautiful, doomed poet. John Keats was born on 31 October 1795 in London. His father worked at a horse stable (马棚), but died in 1804. His mother re-married, but died of a severe disease in 1810.
Keats was educated at a school in Enfield. When he left at 16, he was apprenticed to a surgeon. He wrote his first poems in 1814. In 1816, he abandoned medicine to concentrate on poetry. His first volume of poetry was published the following year.
In 1818, Keats nursed his brother Tom through the final stages of tuberculosis(肺结核), the disease that had killed their mother. Tom died in December and Keats moved to his friend Charles Brown’s house in Hampstead. There he met and fell deeply in love with a neighbor, the 18-year old Fanny Brawne.
This was the beginning of Keats’ most creative period. He wrote, among others, ‘The Eve of St Agnes’, ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’, ‘Ode to a Nightingale’ and ‘To Autumn’. The group of five odes(颂诗), which include ‘Ode to a Nightingale’, are ranked among the greatest short poems in the English language.
From September 1819, Keats produced little more poetry. His financial difficulties were now severe. He became engaged to Fanny Brawne, but with no money there was little possibility of their marrying.
Early in 1820, Keats began to display symptoms of tuberculosis. His second volume of poetry was published in July, but he was by now very ill. In September, Keats and his friend Joseph Severn left for the warmer weather of Italy, in the hope that this would improve Keats’ health. When they reached Rome, Keats was confined to bed. Severn took care of him devotedly, but Keats died in Rome on 23 February 1821. He was buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.

WASHINGTON — From the towering Great Dane to the feisty little Chihuahua, all dogs are brothers under the skin. Now, researchers have uncovered a clue to why the animals wearing that skin vary so much in size.
Dogs have the largest variation in body size of any land animal, so researchers led by Elaine A. Ostrander of the National Human Genome Research Institute decided to look into the reasons why.
Their finding of a section of genes that controls small size in dogs is reported in Friday’s issue of the journal Science.
Learning how growth is controlled can improve the understanding of cancer and other diseases caused by growth gone awry, Ostrander explained in a telephone interview.
And the research adds to the basic study of variations, perhaps improving knowledge of the differences between people, she added.
K. Gordon Lark of the University of Utah, a co-author of the report, pointed out that dogs have 200 to 300 diseases in common with people, including high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases and cancer.
“They also share our environment, so if there is an environmental influence that can trigger disease, dogs will be going through the same process,” he said in a telephone interview.
“So, if we can solve this in dogs, that’s a fantastic jump ahead,” Lark said.
Keith E. Murphy, principal investigator at the Canine Genetics Laboratory of Texas A&M University, called the research “an incredible piece of work.”
It was suspected that there might be a few major genes controlling significant differences in body type, said Murphy.

As L. P. Hartley put it, “The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there”, then for many English football fans this week that country looks like Italy or Spain. Watching the pictures of police beating up my fellow Manchester United supporters in Rome, and the similar scenes involving Spurs fans in Seville, felt like a throwback to another era.
How attitudes seem to have changed. In 1974, after police in Rotterdam baton-charged(用警棒袭击)Spurs fans at the Uefa Cup final, Bill Nicholson, the Tottenham manager, condemned his own supporters as “a disgrace to Britain”. This week Martin Jol, Tottenham’s present manager, and the club hierarchy(统治集团) came out in support of their fans, and even British ministers joined in Manchester United’s criticism of the “heavy-handed” policing in Rome. English fans have gone from being villains(恶棍) to helpless victims. 21世纪教育网
Reactions in Italy and Spain, however, pinned the blame on drunken English hooligans as they would have done in the past. Italian commentators made reference to the 1985 European Cup final, when 39 Juventus fans died after Liverpool supporters charged and a wall collapsed at Heysel stadium. Although our tastes in football and much else are now more European than ever, there seems to be a culture gap.
Of course, not everybody who follows English teams abroad is a Boy Scout, even if they sometimes act like overgrown schoolboys. But to me the most striking image of the night in Rome was the picture of the dazed United fan with blood pouring from his head — and a camera hanging around his neck. Many supporters had come to Rome as tourists from Planet Premiership’s world of family-friendly entertainment, and were shocked to find themselves in a world where football is still a battleground.
51. How many football teams are mentioned
A. 4. B. 5. C. 2. D. 6.
52. What’s the author’s attitude toward Manchester United fans
A. Critical. B. Sympathetic. C. Cold. D. Praiseful.
53. According to the passage, why did Italian commentators referred to the 1985 European Cup final
A. To make people believe that British football fans are as bad-mannered as before.
B. To make people believe that British football fans are as helpless as before.
C. To remind audience of the terrible disaster in football history.
D. To criticize Indian police for being too cruel.
54. We can infer from the passage that _____.
A. there is no culture gap between European teams
B. Juventus won the final over Liverpool
C. Juventus fans must have been beaten to death by Liverpool supporters
D. the author must be from Italy
55. According to the author, the police’s action in Rome is _____.
A. very reasonable B. ridiculous C. overdone D. understandable

American pilot Frank Webb first flew a glider at the age of 14, made his first flight alone on his.16th birthday and got his commercial pilot's licensee (执照)on his 18th birthday.
After serving in the US Navy for 20 years, being a Boeing flight instructor, and working with Alaska Airlines for more than three years, Webb signed a contract with Shenzhen Airlines last May to captain domestic routes in China. As an experienced pilot, he still feels the same nervousness as he felt on his first fight.[来源:21世纪教育网]

Webb has not experienced any in-flight emergencies(紧急情况) during his term in China although he said the weather here was generally more changeable than in the United States."The weather changes tend to be great from north to south. We may be flying in a snow storm in Harbin, and then later that same day we may be flying through a tropical rain shower approaching Shenzhen," Webb said.
While Webb had more flexibility(灵活性) to deal with the weather in the United States, he said air traffic control in China was more strict and allowed fewer deviations(偏离).
Speaking of planes often being late in China, Webb said that in America, being late was one of the few things that would get him in trouble."In China, on the other hand, it seems there are many things that can get you in trouble with the boss, but being late is not one of them." Webb does everything in his power to keep his flights on schedule.

Influenced by the trend of globaliza- tion, the earth is becoming a small village. Step by step China becomes part of this small village. Needless to say, the past 20 years has witnessed the great changes in China. It is unavoidable that the Chinese language has also brought in some new words from other languages, especially from English. A lot of English words have found its way in Chinese, such as bye-bye, OK, show and so on.
However, some new words directly borrowed from English have caused some confusion in communication. Take PK for example, I believe some older people may probably have some trouble in making out the meaning of this word.
The overuse of foreign words in Chinese has raised the public concern about Chinese standardization. As far as I am concerned, the government should take measures to call on the people to use correct and standard Chinese.21世纪教育网Book10 Module 4单元测试题(外研版)

A son and his father were walking on the mountains. Suddenly, his son fell, hurt himself and screamed: “AAAhhhh!!!”
To his surprise, he heard the voice repeating, somewhere in the mountain: “AAAhhhh!!!”
Curious, he yelled: “Who are you ” He received the answer: “Who are you ” And then he screamed to the mountain: “I admire you!” The voice answered: “I admire you!” Angered at the response, he screamed: “Coward (懦夫)!” He received the answer: “Coward!”
He looked to his father and asked, “What’s going on ”
The father smiled and said, “My son, pay attention.” Again the man screamed: “You are a champion!”
The voice answered, “You are a champion!”
The boy was surprised, but did not understand. Then the father explained, “People call this echo, but really this is life. It gives you back everything you say or do. Our life is simply a reflection (反映) of our actions. If you want more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more competence (能力) in your team, improve your competence. In the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers practice a unique form of logging. If a tree is too large to be cut with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it. Woodsmen with special powers climb up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs. They continue this for thirty days. The tree dies and falls over.
The theory is that the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works. Ah, those poor na 觙ve (天真的) innocents! Such strangely charming habits of the jungle! Screaming at the tree indeed is primitive. Too bad they don’t have the advantages of modern technology and the scientific mind.
Me I yell at my wife. And yell at the telephone and the lawn mower (割草机). And yell at the TV and the newspaper and my children. I’ve even been known to shake my fist and yell at the sky at times. The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a stepladder for most of an afternoon. We modern, urban, educated folks yell at the traffic and judges and bills and banks and machines — especially machines.
Don’t know what good it does. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking doesn’t always help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.
40. In the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, people usually log average-sized trees by ______.

One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view of the masterpieces.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chattered nonstop between themselves. I watched them a moment and decided she was doing all the talking. I admired his patience for putting up with her constant words. Distracted (心烦意乱的) by their noise, I moved on.
I encountered them several times as I moved through the various rooms of art. Each time I heard her constant talking, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop making a purchase when the couple approached the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended it into a long cane (手杖) and then tapped his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man,” the clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery, he made a promise his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art ” I asked, “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see! You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do,” the clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life.
And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away arm in arm.

A 77-year-old former traffic policeman who for ten years had cared for his Alzheimer’s-stricken wife, walked into the hospital where she was being treated and shot her three times.
Vitangelo Bini then sat down at the foot of her bed to call police. When they arrived he told them: “I couldn’t stand to see her suffer any more.”
Mr. Bini, from Prato, in Tuscany, was in custody (拘留) after being charged with the homicide (杀人罪). His wife, Mara Tani, 82, had suffered from Alzheimer for about ten years and was admitted to the Misericordia e Dolce hospital in Prato last week when she lost consciousness.
Mr. Bini, who had been her full-time carer, had visited her several times a day, hospital staff told the police. Orhan Pamuk, Turkey’s best-known novelist won the 2006 Nobel prize for Literature on Thursday.
Here are some reactions to the news from Turkey.
PINAR KUR, A LEADING FEMALE TURKISH NOVELIST
“For years, everybody has wished someone from Turkey would win the Nobel. But it is also known, both in Turkey and abroad, that this prize is much more related to politics than to literature, it is given more for political reasons. It is very unfortunate that this prize announcement was made on the same day as the (Armenian genocide) bill in France.”
SUAT KINIKLIOGLU, GERMAN MARSHALL PLAN OF THE UNITED STATES
“With all due respect to Orhan Pamuk, whose books I read and like, I believe his comments on the Armenian genocide have been influential in his winning this prize. I think many Turks will see it in this way, too and will not be cheering.
And this is the worst day that this could happen, when the French parliament approves a bill making it a crime to deny the Armenian genocide.
There is a political dimension (因素) to all this. I do not believe he was chosen purely on the basis of his artistic capacity, even though he is a great writer.”21世纪教育网

We have two daughters: Kristen is seven years old and Kelly is four.Last Sunday evening, we invited some people home for dinner.I dressed them nicely for the party, and told them that their job was to join Mommy in answering the door when the bell rang.
Mommy would introduce them to the guests, and they would take the guests' coats upstairs and put them on the bed in the second bedroom.
The guests arrived.I introduced my two daughters to each of them. The adults were nice and kind and said how lucky we were to have such good kids.
Each of the guests made a particular fuss (关爱) over Kelly, the younger one, admiring her dress, her hair and her smile. They said she was a great girl to be carrying coats upstairs at her age.
I thought to myself that we adults usually make a big "to do" over the younger one because she's the one who seemly more easily hurt.We do it with the best of intentions.
But we seldom think of how it might affect the other child.I was a little worried that Kristen would feel she was being outshined (逊色,相形见绌).I was about to serve dinner when I realized that she had been missing for twenty minutes.I ran upstairs and found her in the bedroom, crying.21世纪教育网

Recently a debate about mercy killing caused by a 28-year-old girl, Li Yan, has come into public spotlight. Li Yan has suffered from a serious disease for years, as a result of which she is completely dependent on her parents for a living. She calls for the government to pass the law that allows mercy killing. It goes without saying that her appealing is turned down.
It sounds reasonable that we should try our best to live in this world no matter what difficulties we may be confronted with. However, if you were in Li Yan’s position, what would you do As far as I am concerned, we human beings have the right to choose to live with dignity. When life means bitterness and misery, that is, when it is hard for us human beings to live with dignity, maybe mercy killing is the way out. I do hope our country can take a flexible attitude in dealing with mercy killing.

三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
There are lots of good reasons to read blogs, including:21世纪教育网
Keeping up with current events: Since local news is useless, and cable news only slightly less so, blogs are often where I learn about the most important news of the day. I also learn of important news that the regular news outlets aren’t even covering (or are covering badly).
The pulse of the times: As someone with a professional interest (as both an anthropologist(人类学家) and a writer) in how people and society act, reading blogs offers me insight into the way people see and react to the world around them.
Things I wouldn’t think to ask: While I am an adept(熟练的) Googler when I need answers to some pressing question, a lot of time I’ve learned things from blogs I wouldn’t have Googled because I didn’t even know I didn’t know them.
The negative side of blog-reading includes:
The echo-chamber effect: I read blogs that, for one reason or another, I like, which means it’s possible that I’m hearing viewpoints and opinions that resonate (共鸣) well with my own to the exclusion of others. To be honest, I don’t think this is a big pro- blem, since blogs aren’t the only medium through which I engage with the world, but it’s something to think about.
Time consumption: I’m not really sure how much time I spend reading blogs every day. An hour in the morning and again in the evening seems about right for most days. Is that time that could be better used for other things
The other echo-chamber effect: There’s only so much news in any niche(壁龛), so when something noteworthy happens, chances are several sites will end up running the same story with only slight differences. I can either spend time reading each story to make sure I don’t miss any subtle detail, or skip them (which also takes time, and may mean I miss some key detail).
36. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage
A. Pros and cons of blog-reading.

Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Earth Day. Holidays like these and others could be celebrated every day of the year. While larger projects like helping to clean up local parks are important tasks to tackle, there are also a number of changes you can make in your own household all year long to live greener, according to Barry Kaplan, co-owner of Everything Natural in Clarks Summit. It is the little things that each person can do, he said, that will truly make a difference every day.
Everything Natural owner Barry Kaplan displays is one of the many Earth-friendly cleaning products available at the Clarks Summit store.
“Living as though Earth Day really mattered,” Kaplan said, “helps call attention to something we should be aware of every day. To live greener, or not as wasteful, can include simple life changes that are easy to do.” Kaplan said, “Even if you were to eat one vegetarian meal a week, it has a huge impact. I am not advocating vegetarians, but in our country, we eat more beef than any other country.” Kaplan also suggested that while eating less meat and using products made locally will help the cause, there are many other alternatives.
“Home heating is the largest use of energy that exists. The amount of wood and paper thrown away is enough to heat 50 million homes for 20 years,” Kaplan said. If during the winter, everyone were to turn down their heat a degree or two, Kaplan said it would make a significant difference.
Households should recycle, Kaplan said. “Clarks Summit is a good community for recycling, but it could be better, if every household did.” Kaplan said using recycled paper towels could save millions of trees and landfill space. Also businesses should be more aware of their impact using office paper and the waste of printing emails. At the end of each of Kaplan’s emails it is featured:“Please consider the impact to the environment before printing this email.”

A scan of the human genome(基因组) finds that hundreds of our genes have undergone positive natural selection during the past 10,000 years of human evolution.
Genes are the instructions organisms used to make proteins. They are hidden in genetic material, usually DNA, and some come in different versions, called “alleles(等位基因).” Positive natural selection occurs when one allele is favored over another due to changes in the environment.
Researchers from the University of Chicago analyzed the genomes of 209 unrelated individuals from three distinct human populations: East Asians, Europeans and Yorubans from Nigeria. Each population contained about 250 positively selected genes; however, most of the affected genes differed depending on the group.
“This study addresses the question ‘Are humans still evolving ’, and the answer is ‘Absolutely,’” study team member Benjamin Voight said.
“There have been a lot of recent changes—the advent(到来) of agriculture, shifts in diet, new habitats, climatic changes—over the past 10,000 years,” said Jonathan Pritchard, a human geneticist at the University of Chicago who led the study.21世纪教育网
The researchers also found positive selection in four pigment genes(色素基因) important for lighter skin in Europeans that were not known before. Scientists think humans evolved lighter skin in Europe as an adaptation to less sunlight.
And in East Asians, they found strong evidence of positive selection in genes involved in the production of ADH, a protein necessary for breaking down alcohol. However, some East Asians can’t metabolize(产生代谢变化) alcohol because they carry a mutation(突变) that prevents them from making ADH. The new finding suggests that the mutation may confer some currently unknown additional benefit.
The text, which used data collected by the International HapMap Project, is detailed in the March 7 issue of the journal Public Library of Science-Biology.

Mary Schaefer has always been interested in how the human element plays out in what, and how, things get done in the workplace. Mary’s belief is that organizations are composed of unique human beings requiring individual attention in order to make the most of what they can contribute to an organization, and at the same time meet their own specific needs for meaningful work. She formed her company, Artemis Path, to help managers and employees see how they can get more from themselves and each other by working WITH what makes us human beings—an unexpected resourcefulness and energy that can only come from a respectful and cooperative work environment.
Having started as a computer systems analyst, over time she noticed that she was more interested in how people reacted to changing job expectations and a changing work environment, how people reacted to learning new skills, and how to overcome the obstacles to that.
As she started pursuing a career in Human Resources and a Master’s in HR, Mary was chosen for several work assignments that allowed her to try out her vision for how people can be more positively engaged in the workplace. She took an active role in leading hundreds of survivors of corporate downsizing to see how they could make positive choices moving forward, rather than be overwhelmed by constant job insecurity.
While leading a manufacturing project team made up of several shop-floor employees, Mary worked with every person on her team on their skill-development needs. In just a few years, several were promoted and were able to significantly expand their career possibilities. Mary was recognized for this and more with an award for being a “champion of human potential”.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it.They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time, to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way.Others burst with anger, and scream and yell.Yet a few people keep their anger inside. They can not or will hot express it.This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it.They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.In general, the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Docors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, men decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, "Do not express your anger while angry.Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably."
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

With the NCEE drawing near, almost all Senior Three students concentrate on their studies. However, that’s not always the case. There are still some students who spare some time for their favorite fantasy novels of Harry Potter. My head teacher scolded those students for their wrongdoing at our class meeting.
To be honest, what our head teacher said set me in deep thought. Is it a wrongdoing or a waste of time to read such fantasy novels Definitely not. Harry Potter is a successful character created by the great writer J. K. Rowling. She succeeds in creating a world where teenagers can let their imagination fly freely. What’s more, reading Harry Potter can serve as a relaxation for us senior three students. 21世纪教育网

A
Science Daily — World Wildlife Fund scientists have just announced the discovery of 11 new animal and plant species in a remote area in central Vietnam. They say that this discovery proves the importance of conservation efforts in the ancient tropical forests of the region.
Within the ancient tropical forests of a region known as Vietnam’s “Green Corridor”, scientists found a snake, five orchids(兰花), and two butterflies as well as three other plants new to science and exclusive(唯一的) to the Annamites Mountain Range. Ten other plant species, including four orchids, are still under examination but also appear to be new species.
“Discoveries of so many new species are rare and occur only in very special places like the ‘Green Corridor’,” said Dr. Chris Dickinson, WWF’s chief conservation scientist in the “Green Corridor”. “Several large mammal species were discovered in the 1990s in the same forests so these latest discoveries may be just the tip of the iceberg.”
“The rainforests likely existed as continuous un- disturbed forest cover for thousands of years, and, as a result, offer unique habitats for many species,” said WWF experts. 21世纪教育网
The new snake species, called the white-lipped keel- back, prefers living by streams where it catches frogs and other small animals easily. It can reach 31 inches.
Three of the new orchid species are entirely leafless, a rarity even among orchids. Containing none of the chlorophyll(叶绿素) or green pigment commonly found in plants, these orchids live on decaying matter like many fungal(真菌) species. The other new plants include an aspidistra which produces a nearly black flower and a newly-discovered species of arum with beautiful yellow flowers. Arum plants have funnel-shaped leaves surrounding the flowers.
The two new butterfly species are among eight discovered in the province since 1996. One is a skipper — a butterfly with quick, darting flight habits—from the genus Zela and the other is a new genus in the sub-family of Satyrinae.
36. What’s the main reason for so many new species being in this region
A. That the forest is located in the tropics.
B. That the rainforests aren’t destroyed for thousands of years.
C. The scientists’ hard work there.
D. That the forest is covered with kinds of green plants.
37. Three of the new orchid species are very particular because _______.
A. they have no chlorophyll
B. they live on decaying matter like fungal species
C. they have no leaves
D. they don’t belong to any plant
38. According to Dr. Chris Dickinson, _______.
A. many more new species will probably be discovered in the region
B. it’s impossible for us to find new species in any other places
C. it’s a pity that they didn’t find new large mammal species this time
D. the mountain is too large for all the new species to be discovered
39. We can infer from the report that _______.
A. the central part of Vietnam is surrounded by mountains
B. Dr. Chris Dickinson has been living in the region since 1990s
C. new orchid species are the most among all the discovered new species since the 1990s
D. scientists have been working to protect the “Green Corridor” in the past years

Uncle Tom’s Cabin was one of the most influential novels of all time, exposing the evils of slavery to a great many people who knew nothing so terrible was happening. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the book’s author, is said to have gotten the idea for her book from reading the autobiography of Josiah Henson.
Josiah Henson was born into slavery on a plantation in Charles County, Maryland on June 15, 1789. From an early age, Josiah experienced the cruelty of slavery. Josiah saw many slaves whipped and beaten. He watched their reactions and concluded that if he was loyal and worked hard, he would stay out of trouble and avoid the same fate. As he grew older and proved his loyalty, he was given the job of caring for the owner’s horse. Before long, he was sent to work in the fields under the hot sun from dawn to dusk.
Josiah learned about God from his mother. While still a young man, he began to preach the gospel. Eventually, he became a minister and gave talks, for which people would pay him money. By 1830, he had saved up $350 to buy his freedom. His master at the time had acknowledged that figure but increased it to $1,000 when Henson gave him the money. Josiah decided to take his family and escape. With the help of a Native American tribe and the Underground Railroad, they made their way to Canada.
Josiah founded The Dawn Institute, a settlement for runaway slaves near Ontario. At this place, former slaves would learn how to be successful farmers. He also began work on the Underground Railroad himself, helping hundreds of slaves to freedom in Canada.
He published his autobiography, Life of Josiah Henson, in 1849. Uncle Tom’s Cabin came out a few years later, and Henson traveled in Canada and England, giving lectures on his life as “Uncle Tom.” In fact, he retiled his autobiography My Life as Uncle Tom. He died on May 5, 1883, in Dresden, Ontario.

In January 2006, several individuals in Northwest Arkansas watched their friends and loved ones die the quick and horrible death of ALS. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a neuromuscular disease(神经肌肉疾病) for which there is no known cure or prevention.
After dealing with the grief of losing her husband, Steve Kressen, to ALS, Sylvia knew she had to act. “I wanted to do something to honor my wonderful husband Steve and to be there for others with ALS,” she says. “I knew well that caring for someone with ALS is a demanding job and yet I recalled the love, support and friendship that helped Steve and our children through to the very end. I had to do something. I knew that they needed all the support they could to maintain a high quality of life as long as they could.”
Sylvia Kressen and a few volunteers she had recruited(征募) tried to establish a Northwest Arkansas ALS chapter. Some of the fledgling(刚开始的) organization’s initial volunteer leaders had to drop out for one reason or another. While Sylvia had good business experience, she had no experience with nonprofits.
Sylvia turned to Northwest Arkansas SCORE. She found encouragement, support and a wealth of knowledge of nonprofit organizations. Sylvia says, “The entire chapter deserves thanks for its willingness to help. But without Bill Powell’s wisdom and in-depth knowledge, we would have floundered and failed.”
Sylvia says, “We have done so much.” Patients had no one to go to for encourage- ment and answers, but now a support group meets monthly with 30 members. ALS patients often didn’t know how specialized medical equipment could improve their quality of life or how to acquire such equipment. Now, through the generous help of an Arkansas Rotary Club and the Rotary Medical Supply Network in Tulsa, Okla., a free medical equipment loan program has been developed.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

The holidays are coming! And we all know what that means... it’s that time of year when malls, stores, restaurants, streets, and freeways are busier and crazier than ever. This holiday season, while you’re out shopping and running around, why not go out of your way to say hello to the hotel cleaning person, the flight attendant, the restaurant bus person, the hotel clerk, the garbage collector, the gardener...
A wonderful storyteller by the name of C.W. Metcalf told of a man in the airport who was verbally abusing an airline ticketing agent. The traveler had missed his flight due to mechanical difficulties and was being loud, aggressive, and just plain mean to the poor ticketing agent, who obviously had no control over the plane’s condition. Metcalf went up to the abusive man and asked, “Can I have your autograph ” When the man, puzzled, asked, “Why do you want my autograph ” Metcalf responded, “Because I’ve never met the center of the universe before!”
I once had one of those awful flying experiences where flight after flight was delayed. What should have been a three-hour flight turned into a fifteen-hour, multiple-city, exhausting nightmare, causing me to miss meetings in my intended city. At 3 A.M., by the time I was finally within thirty minutes of landing at my destination airport, I suddenly smelled something wonderful: the flight attendants were baking chocolate chip cookies! That sweet, comforting aroma filled the airline cabin, and our small group of 20 passengers waited with anticipation as the flight attendants made their way down the aisle, handing each of us a warm cookie. I instantly abandoned my plans for an enraged letter-writing campaign against the airline and was effortlessly relieved of all my anger and exhaustion—all by one soft, freshly baked cookie.

In 1985, a geography researcher called Atsumu Ohmura at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology got the shock of his life. As part of his studies into climate and atmospheric radiation, Ohmura was checking levels of sunlight recorded around Europe when he made an astonishing discovery. Compared to similar measurements recorded by his predecessors in the 1960s, Ohmura’s results suggested that levels of solar radiation striking the Earth’s surface had declined by more than 10% in three decades. Sunshine, it seemed, was on the way out.
The finding went against all scientific thinking. When Ohmura eventually published his discovery in 1989, the science world was distinctly unimpressed. “It was ignored,” he says.
It turns out that Ohmura was the first to document a dramatic effect that scientists are now calling “global dimming”. Records show that over the past 50 years the average amount of sunlight reaching the ground has gone down by almost 3% a decade. It’s too small an effect to see with the naked eye, but it has implications for everything from climate change to solar power and even the future sustainability of plant photosynthesis(光合作用).
Although Ohmura was the first to report global dimming, he wasn’t alone. In fact, the scientific record now shows several other research papers published during the 1990s on the subject, all finding that light levels were falling significantly. Among them they reported that sunshine in Ireland was on the wane, that both the Arctic and the Antarctic were getting darker and that light in Japan, the supposed land of the rising sun, was actually falling. 21世纪教育网
But what causes global dimming The few experts who have studied the effect believe it’s down to air pollution. Tiny particles of soot(煤烟) or chemical compounds like sulphates reflect sunlight and they also promote the formation of bigger, longer lasting clouds. “The cloudy times are getting darker,” says Cohen, at the Volcani Centre. “If it’s cloudy then it’s darker, but when it’s sunny things haven’t changed much.”

The first people to reach North America were Asian hunters and nomads. Some experts think they crossed the land bridge that connected the two continents about 30, 000 to 34, 000 years ago. Once in Alaska, it took these first North Americans, the ancestors of Native American tribes, thousands of years to work their way south to what is now the United States. Evidence of early life in North America has been found at sites throughout North and South America, indicating that life was probably already well established in much of the Western Hemisphere by some time prior to 10,000 B.C.
Around that time the mammoth(猛犸) began to die out and the bison took its place as a principal source of food and hides for these early North Americans. Indians in what is now central Mexico led the way, cultivating corn, squash(南瓜属植物) and beans, perhaps as early as 8,000 B.C. Slowly, this knowledge spread northward. By 3,000 B.C., a primitive type of corn was being grown in the river valleys of New Mexico and Arizona. Then the first signs of irrigation began to appear, and by 300 B.C., signs of early village life.
Indian customs and culture at the time were extraordinarily diverse, as could be expected, given the expanse of the land and the many different environments to which they had adapted. By all accounts, Indian society in North America was closely tied to the land.
The first Europeans to reach North America were Icelandic Vikings, led by Leif Ericson, in about the year 1000. In 1492, the Italian navigator Christopher Columbus, acting on behalf of the Spanish crown, sailed west from Europe and landed on one of the Bahama Islands. Columbus never saw the mainland United States, but the first explorations of the continental United States were launched from the Spanish possessions(领地) that he helped establish.

The trend in everyday conversation is to use grandiose(浮夸的)words.“Out- standing” is new “good,” “amazing” is the new “OK,” and “huge” is the new “big.”
I was in a restaurant in D.C. last weekend and everything I asked was answered in superlatives.
Me: How’s the salmon(鲑鱼)
Server: Fantastic!
Me: Does it come with rice 21世纪教育网
Server: Absolutely!
Would a “good” and a “yes” have been sufficient Of course!
My father is an average-sized man. He hasn’t gained weight (or height) for the past 30 years. Ergo, his size remains the same. But in the same amount of time, his T-shirt size has gone from small / medium to medium to large to extra large.
Upon reflection, the reason for all this colossal-speak is clear: we are bored with our fantastic, wonderful lives. We want the next-next thing now. Now!
And we also want others to think that we still care, that we can still be delighted, that we know that everything is just great, even when deep inside we know it can’t be. Everything can’t be great.
I’m not a scientist, and my methods of proof leave a little to be desired, or a lot to be desired, or an immensity(无限). And to be honest, I guess I’d rather live in a world where people were overly excited than depressed.
But listen to the voices around you. Listen to your own voices. There is nothing on the news that is good or bad, only things that are wonderful or devastating. Even the weather is either beautiful or horrible.
Listen the next time when someone asks you something and you agree, because when you could simply say “yes,” instead you will say “absolutely” or “without doubt” or “Oh, yeah, unquestionably—absolutely without doubt.”
Have people forgotten what it is like to be OK Simply OK with what they have and who they are
If everything is outstanding, if everything is the most amazing thing ever, is anything ever amazing at all
51. Which of the following isn’t a grandiose word according to the passage
A. Fantastic. B. Great. C. Good. D. Amazing.
52. The underlined word “Ergo” in the passage probably means “______”.
A. However B. Instead C. Meanwhile D. Therefore
53. In the author’s opinion, the reason why people use grandiose words may be that ______.
A. they are depressed B. they can still be delighted
C. they are bored with their present lives D. everything can’t be great

They can not or will hot express it.This is called repressing anger.21世纪教育网
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it.They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.In general, the person feels excited and ready to act.21世纪教育网
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

One possible version:
It hasn’t been long since sitcoms were first brought in from abroad. If my memory serves me right, “I love my home” was the first mainland sitcoms, and it proves to be a long-lasting success. “I love my home” has been shown on TV over and over again. Still, it draws thousands of sitcom fans.
Sitcoms are a new movement of TV dramas. The plot of a sitcom usually centers on a family or a certain place. First, a sitcom should be amusing. It’s not surprising that viewers are frequently reduced to laughter from time to time. Second, sitcoms have a fixed major cast. The characters in a sitcom gain a high popularity thanks to their wonderful performances. Thirdly each episode has a relatively complete story, so viewers can still enjoy it even though they miss some of the episodes.
As I’ve seen above, sitcoms will still be in the trend in China in the years to come.
