A survey by an international temporary service agency found that US managers believe that people with a sense of humor do better at their jobs, compared with those who have little or no sense of humor. In fact.about 96 percent of those surveyed said people with a sense of humor do better.
The survey went on to point out that the results suggest that a sense of humor may help light-hearted employees keep their jobs during tough times. And,what’s more,it may push them up the corporate ladder past their humorless colleagues. Why It seems that those with a sense of humor are better communicators and better team players.
Studies have shown that happy workers are more productive. In fact,a researcher at California State University found that humor could help the employees to release tension.
Research done by psychologist Dr.Ashton Trice at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia showed that humor helps us think. When people feel stuck on important projects, they tend to feel angry or depressed.According to Dr.Trice’s research, taking time out to laugh can help us to get rid of negative feelings and allow us to return to a task or move on to another project unaffected by past defeat.
If humor is really so important, then why don’t we use it more often on the job Most likely, the main reason is that many people are unaware of the positive effects of humor in the workplace. However,it is important to realize that some humor is not suitable for the workplace, and that it is often used at wrong times.

A.help you to do your work better

A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as in English, and the general principle applies to any language. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook—but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gained will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with.
The reading passages which follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about five hundred words long. They are about topics of general interest which do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. If you read this kind of English, with understanding at four hundred words per minute, you might skim through a newspaper at perhaps 650—700, while with difficult textbooks you might drop to two hundred or two hundred and fifty.
Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved.Tests in Minnesota,USA,for example, have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example,Tolstoy’s War and Peace in translation,at speeds of between 240 and 250 words per minute with about seventy percent comprehension.Students in Minnesota claim(声称)that after twelve half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension,to around five hundred words per minute.
40.According to the passage, the purpose of effective reading with higher speed is most likely to help you_________.

Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food.Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership which does good to both of them, You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride.but because they find easy food in the parasites on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.
Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals of the sea.In their skins they have tiny plants act as“dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed,or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

2.C trouble作先行词,后面是一个定语从句,从句中的谓语动词是have had,宾语是先行词trouble,构成短语have trouble(in)doing sth.,故第一个空用treating;该定语从句中还包含着一个定语从句,先行词是the patient,从句缺少主语,故选who。
3.A call in号召。
4.D 特殊疑问词+不定式作主语,谓语动词应用被动结构,又根据yet判断用现在完成时态,故选D。

Waste of Water Should Not Be Excused
AS we all know, the world is short of clean water. In some mountainous areas water is more valuable than oil and sometimes many animals and even villagers die just because they can’t get enough water to drink.Farmers need water to irrigate their fields but every year in some areas of the world,it rains little and farmers worry about how to water their fields. If they can’t get enough water they will never have a good harvest.Meanwhile, people in cities waste water every day. Some of them don’t realize how important it is to save water. So we must make it known to everyone that water is valuable.
