Preschool girl lifts old man’s spirits
When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.
As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man looked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! It’s my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together, Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend “Mr. Dan”, Dan Peterson, 82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship.
Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr. Dan’s wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara got in touch with Mr. Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didn’t know existed,” Mr. Dan told the reporter.
Mr. Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadn’t had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan’s 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents—and, of course, cupcakes. Mr. Dan will also spend a day around Thanksgiving with Norah and her family. “If you don’t take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said.

Have you ever been angry with your parents about putting away the iPad or turning off a video game? Most families are having these fights. In 2018, Brigham Young University and Deseret News did their American Family Survey. It showed that the Number One worry for parents about teenagers was too much technology.
If you’re in school now, you may not remember a time before there were smartphones and tablets everywhere. The iPhone came out in 2007 and the iPad a few years later, in 2010. But screen time is nothing new. When your parents were growing up, they watched as much television as you do now, or even more. They probably played video games, too.
Mobile devices (设备) are different, though, because they can come with us everywhere we go: to the dinner table, to restaurants, into the car, into the bedroom when we’re going to sleep. They are always trying to make us pick them up or keep using them. That’s part of what makes smartphones smart! But it also means that they always stop us from having family time. And unlike with TV, which people often watch as a family, everyone—including parents—is now distracted (分心) by his or her own little machine.
Studies show that too much screen time can cause problems. More than two hours a day of screen time raises your risk of being overweight. Too much screen time at night stops you from getting healthy sleep. Children who grow up with the most screen time (several hours a day) can have a hard time doing well in school. And many families fight about screen time, which is no fun for anyone.
The solution is to talk about screen time. Make an agreement with your family about where, when, and how you are going to use computers and other devices. No more than an hour a day is suggested for children during the school week. Parents, too, should put down their phones.
When you do use a device, remember to enjoy it with your family, perhaps by playing games or watching a movie. The American Academy of Pediatrics says it’s the best way for children to grow up healthy in our digital world.
27. According to the survey, what do teenagers’ parents worry most?
A. Teenagers do badly at school.
B. Teenagers have fights with classmates.
C. Teenagers have risks of being overweight.
D. Teenagers spend too much time in front of screens.
27. The writer compares mobile devices with televisions to explain _____________.
A. why parents prefer watching TV
B. why mobile devices lead to less family time
C. why smartphones are smarter than televisions
D. why mobile devices can cause health problems
29. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To give parents advice on using smartphones.
B. To introduce the development of new technology.
C. To tell children how to use mobile devices in a right way.
D. To ask children to spend less time playing computer games.
D
Feeling sad is an important part of human nature.
Jerome Wakefield, a professor at New York University, mentions that feeling down after your heart is broken is normal and may even be beneficial. Recently, Wakefield’s students have been coming up to him because their parents are pressuring them to get help for their sadness; often the kids want no part of it. Rather than “listen to medicine,” they want to listen to their hearts. He believes these students’ reaction represents an important part of human nature.
Professor Diener, who has studied happiness for a quarter century, finds that the Scots and many other peoples like being sad, and don’t appreciate being told they should be happier. “They say too much happiness might not be such a good thing, no matter where it comes from,” says Diener. He believes it’s wrong for the “happiness industry” to send the message that not only can we all be happier, but we have a duty to be so. He argues that what is considered normal sadness is something we shouldn’t avoid.
Eric Wilson, a professor at Wake Forest University, made every effort to smooth out his habitual frown and wear a sunny smile, since a happy expression can lead to happy feelings. He even tried to be enthusiastic. When neither of these made him happy, he concluded that such a happiness movement was no good for him at all. Americans, love for happiness, he writes, creates an environment where sadness is not valued.
These researchers believe the problem of continuous, extreme happiness should not be surprising, since negative emotions developed for a reason. Fear warns us against the presence of danger, for instance. Sadness, too, seems to be part of our DNA: monkeys, dogs and elephants all display something that looks like sadness. Being “up” all the time can cause you to play down very real threats.
They believe that only by experiencing sadness can we experience the fullness of the human condition. Their studies show that when you are in a negative frame of mind, you become more logical and more creative. Abraham Lincoln was not limited by his dark moods, and Beethoven composed his later works in a sad state. Vincent van Gogh, Emily Dickinson and other artistic giants saw the world through a glass darkly.
People who are somewhat unhappy are more motivated to improve both their own lot and the lot of their community. In contrast, people at the top of the happiness charts feel no such urgency. “If you’re totally satisfied with your life,” says Diener, “you don’t feel like working for change. Be careful when people tell you that you should be happier.”
30. According to Jerome Wakefield, the students refuse to get help for their sadness because _______.
A. they believe they have a duty to be happy
B. they prefer to experience sadness themselves
C. they think it useless to take medicine for sadness
D. they trust their professors more than their parents
31. From the article we can learn that ___________.
A. experiencing sadness may help artists create their works
B. sadness will make people aware of the meaning of happiness
C. if you tell the Scots to be happier, they will be grateful to you
D. Eric Wilson managed to achieve happiness by avoiding sadness
32. What does the underlined phrase “smooth out” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. carry on B. hand out C. get rid of D. pay attention to
33. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Value of Sadness B. People Prefer Sadness
C. How to Become Happier D. Happiness Could Be Harmful

Most of us probably dreamed about becoming an astronaut when we were little. But how many of us have actually become one, or are at least working toward it? It’s true that the advice “Always follow your dreams” is something that is typically easier said than done.
But still, this is the one piece of advice that Alyssa Carson wants to share with her peers. This 17-year-old girl from the US has become one of the candidates (候选人) for NASA’s 2033 project to go to Mars. If everything goes well, Carson will be one of the first human beings to ever set foot on the red planet.
Carson began to dream of going to mars when she was only three years old. After watching an astronaut-themed cartoon and hearing from her father that humans had only been to the moon but not Mars. Carson decided that she wanted to be the first one to do so.
To realize her dream, she has worked hard toward it. At the age of 12, Carson became the first person to attend all three NASA space camps, and she sat with real astronauts to discuss the future of Mars missions. Now 17, Carson is continuing with her space training while still taking on her high school work like a “normal” teenager, except that she studies all her subjects in four languages-English, French, Spanish and Chinese.
“I don’t think there’s anything specific that makes it easier for me or makes it something that others can’t do,” Carson said in an interview. “I’ve just really focused myself on what I want to accomplish.”
Besides, Carson is willing to make sacrifices (牺牲) for her dream. She’s fully aware of the danger of the mission and the possibility that she might never be able to come back. She also accepts the fact that she can’t get married and start a family because any loved ones left on Earth may be a distraction for her and for the mission. But Carson believes that it’s all worth it, summarizing her view with this ancient Greek proverb she once quoted, “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they’ll never sit in.”
While some people’s dreams may sound out of this world, Carson is on her way.
34. Where is Carson from?
