The
topic
of
this
unit
is
“Progress?”.
Try
to
explain
what
the
question
mark
implies
based
on
your
understanding
of
the
reading
passage.
Answers
may
vary.
(For
reference)
The
question
mark
is
intended
to
set
us
thinking
whether
globalization
leads
to
progress
in
human
society
or
not.
In
the
reading
passage,
after
illustrating
how
globalization
has
made
people
from
different
parts
of
the
world
start
to
live
similar
lives,
the
writer
further
expresses
his
concern
about
the
negative
impact
of
globalization
on
regional
languages
and
cultures.
It
seems
to
the
writer
that
globalization
is
robbing
the
world
of
its
diversity,
which
is
obviously
bad
for
the
human
race.
II.
Deep

How

My
explanation
Writing
Strategies
In
October
2011,
the
seven
billionth
baby
was
born,
and
experts
predict
that
there
will
be
ten
billion
of
us
before
the
end
of
this
century.
Guiding
question:
Why
does
the
writer
mention
these
figures?
These
figures
make
it
easier
for
readers
to
understand
the
alarming
rate
of
increase,
and
make
the
writer's
argument
stronger.
Statistics
If
you
said
“hello”
to
a
different
person
every
second,
it
would
take
you
222
years
to
greet
everyone
on
the
planet.
Guiding
question:
Why
does
the
writer
mention
the
imagined
situation?
The
writer
mentions
the
imagined
situation
to
make
it
easier
for
the
readers
to
understand
how
big
the
population
is.
222
years
is
a
length
of
time
that
we
can
easily
form
a
picture
of
in
our
mind.
It
is
something
we
can
relate
to.
Imagined
situation
In
the
past,
travellers
from
Europe
to
Indonesia
spent
months
at
sea.
Now
you
just
have
to
sit
on
a
plane
for
a
few
hours.
Guiding
question:
What
is
the
writer’s
purpose
of
contrasting
travel
in
the
past
with
that
in
modern
times?
The
writer
uses
contrast
here
to
show
that
the
planet
seems
to
be
getting
smaller
as
a
result
of
the
development
of
faster
transportation.
It
also
shows
how
advances
in
technology
have
made
travel
more
convenient
so
that
people
from
different
parts
of
the
world
are
becoming
more
connected
than
ever
before.
Contrast
I
grew
up
in
a
small
village
where
everyone
spoke
Baras,
one
of
Indonesia’s
local
languages....
The
only
regular
Baras
speakers
at
present
are
the
older
people
who
have
stayed
in
the
country,...
Guiding
question:
What
does
the
writer
imply
about
the
Baras
language?
The
writer
implies
that
Baras
is
dying
because
fewer
young
people
are
speaking
it
at
present
and
it
is
the
older
generations
who
are
regularly
speaking
the
language
in
his
small
village.
That's
because
globalization
causes
people
to
migrate
and
the
migrants
usually
learn
the
common
language
and
give
up
using
their
own
languages.
This
is
an
example
to
show
how
globalization
can
cause
problems
for
local
languages.
Illustration
Where
will
it
stop?
Will
there
be
a
time
in
the
future
when
Earth’s
billions
all
speak
just
one
language,
and
there
are
no
cultural
differences
to
divide
us?
Guiding
question:
What
is
the
writer’s
purpose
for
raising
these
questions?
The
two
questions
show
that
the
writer
is
worried
about
language
dying
and
cultural
differences
disappearing.
The
writer
asks
these
questions
to
attract
readers’
attention
and
encourage
them
to
think
about
the
issue
themselves.
Rhetorical
questions
III.
Mini-project
Refer
to
your
own
experience
and
conduct
an
interview
on
the
topic
“How
has
globalization
changed
our
lives?”
Explain
the
change(s)
in
the
following
one
or
two
aspects
and
give
your
opinion
on
such
change(s).
food
local
language
festivals
clothing
entertainment
technology
transport
housing
Globalization
has
brought
change
to
food.
My
opinion
on
such
change
In
the
past
Today
We
ate
lots
of
traditional
food,
such
as
xiaolongbao
and
spring
rolls.
Food
from
all
over
the
world
is
available
in
the
supermarket
and
online.
The
city
is
filled
with
bakeries,
cafes
and
international
fast
food
chains.
I
personally
welcome
this
change.
Because
globalization
has
made
it
easier
for
consumers
to
enjoy
a
rich
variety
of
meal
options.
By
having
a
taste
of
the
traditional
food
in
other
countries,
we
can
also
get
to
know
their
cultures
and
customs
without
going
abroad.
In
short,
globalization
not
only
enriches
our
diets
but
also
promotes
cultural
exchange.
Globalization
has
brought
change
to
transport
.
My
opinion
on
such
change
In
the
past
Today
In
the
1970s,
city
dwellers
in
China
mainly
travelled
by
bicycle
or
by
bus,
though
owning
a
bicycle
was
still
considered
a
luxury
by
many
Chinese
people.
Cars
have
become
a
popular
means
of
transport
in
China.
It
is
reported
that
every
100
Chinese
households
own
37.1
cars
in
2020.
In
addition
to
driving
a
car,
people
can
also
choose
to
take
the
underground
or
ride
a
bicycle.
Globalization
has
greatly
promoted
economic
development
in
China
and
global
competition
has
also
helped
bring
down
prices
of
many
goods.
Therefore,
more
and
more
ordinary
Chinese
families
can
afford
private
cars.
Besides,
globalization
has
also
strengthened
international
exchange
and
cooperation
in
the
field
of
science
and
technology.
Developing
countries,
including
China,
are
able
to
benefit
from
current
technology
with
fewer
barriers.
The
construction
of
underground
railways
and
high-speed
railways
has
made
it
easier
and
safer
for
us
to
travel.
In
short,
I
believe
the
change
brought
by
globalization
has
helped
make
our
lives
better.
