about
10,000
French

became
part

It
also
took
some
words
from
other
languages,
such
as

and
ancient
Greek.
17th
century
The
British
went
to
live
in
North

They
also
controlled
parts
of
Asia,
the
Caribbean

Africa.
20th
century
The

Post-reading
Give
a
presentation
to
your
class.
The
topic
:
English
as
a
global
language
Your
presentation
should
include:
some
facts
of
the
use
of
English
a
brief
introduction
of
the
development
of
English
some
effects
English
will
have
on
people’s
lives
(students’
answers
for
reference)
English
is
considered
as
a
global
language
today.
About
1.5
billion
people
around
the
world
presently
speak
English.
English
is
so
helpful
that
English
translations
are
almost
everywhere
to
be
seen.
In
addition,
English
is
an
official
language
in
over
50
different
countries.
Historically,
English
developed
from
different
types
of
Germanic
languages
when
Anglo-Saxons
arrived
in
England
in
the
5th
century.
Also,
English
was
influenced
by
many
other
languages,
such
as
French
and
Latin.
It
spread
rapidly
to
the
whole
world
between
the
11th
and
the
20th
century
because
of
worldwide
migration
and
international
exchange.
There
is
no
doubt
that
English
as
a
global
language
is
here
to
stay.
However,
going
global
can
sometimes
be
disappointing.
It
may
become
a
threat
of
some
particular
languages
and
cultures.
It
is
generally
assumed
that
there
is
a
great
need
for
a
global
language,
but
it
also
provides
us
with
a
lot
of
food
for
thought.
III.
Interaction
Nowadays,
many
young
people
don’t
speak
the
dialect
of
their
hometown.
For
example,
many
students
in
Shanghai
don’t
know
how
to
speak
Shanghai
dialect.
Therefore,
many
people
are
afraid
of
the
loss
of
Shanghai
dialect.
What
can
we
do
to
protect
the
diversity
of
dialects?
-
from
the
perspective
of
governments
-
from
the
perspective
of
schools
-
from
the
perspective
of
students
(students’
answers
for
reference)
From
the
perspective
of
government:
It
is
very
necessary
make
policies
to
protect
local
dialects.
For
example,
a
large
number
translations
can
be
used
in
the
public
places
such
as
in
TV
programs
and
on
buses.
From
the
perspective
of
schools:
Some
certain
school
time,
such
as
in
some
extracurricular
activities,
should
be
dedicated
to
using
the
local
dialect.
Some
lectures
can
be
delivered
to
raise
students’
awareness
of
protecting
the
dialect.
From
the
perspective
of
students:
In
order
to
protect
the
local
dialect,
we
should
be
exposed
to
it
as
much
as
possible.
When
we
are
having
a
family
get-together,
it’s
better
to
speak
the
local
dialect
to
have
a
better
communication
with
family
members,
especially
with
the
old.
