Road
is
a

The
route
is
over
6,

and
got
its
name
because
the
early
Chinese
traded
silk
along
it.
Although
silk
was
the
main
trading
item,
there
were
many
other
goods
that
travelled
along
the
Silk
Road
between
Eastern
Asia
and
Europe.
In
the
course
of
time,
medicine,

and
livestock(家畜)found
their
way
between
continents.
The
Chinese
learned
to
make
silk
thousands
of
years
ago.
For
a
long
time
they
were
the
only
ones
who
knew
how
to
make
this
precious
material.
Only
the
emperor,
his
family
and
his
highest
advisers
were
allowed
to
wear
clothes
made
of
silk.
For
a
long
time
the
Chinese
guarded
this
secret
very
carefully.
The
ancient
Romans
were
the
first
Europeans
who
became
aware
of
this
wonderful
material.
Trading
started,
often
with
Indians
as
middlemen(中间人)who
traded
silk
with
the
Chinese
in
exchange
for
gold
and
silver
which
they
got
from
the
Romans.
Travelling
along
the
route
was
dangerous.
The
hot
desert,
high
mountains
and
sandstorms
made
travelling
a
rough
business.
Most
of
the
goods
along
the
Silk
Road
were
carried
by
caravans(商队).
Traders
sometimes
brought
goods
from
one
destination
on
the
Silk
Road
to
another,
from
where
the
goods
would
be
transported
by
someone
else.
Over
the
centuries
people
settled
along
the
ancient
route
and
many
cities
emerged.
Later
on
there
were
fewer
hardships
to
overcome,
but
by
no
means
was
it
easy.
Religion,
languages
and
diseases
also
spread
along
the
Silk
Road.
Buddhism,
which
originated
in
India,
spread
to
China
along
this
route.
European
traders
probably
brought
the
plague
from
Asia
to
Europe
along
the
ancient
road.
In
the
early
Middle
Ages,
traffic
along
the
route
decreased
because
of
the
decline
of
the
Roman
Empire.
Trading
along
the
Silk
Road
became
stronger
again
between
the
13th
and
14th
centuries,
when
the
Mongols
controlled
central
Asia.
During
the
Age
of
Exploration
the
Silk
Road
lost
its
importance
because
new
sea
routes
to
Asia
were
discovered.

Missus
Sommers
one
day
found
herself
the
unexpected
owner
of
fifteen
dollars.
It
seemed
to
her
a
very
large
amount
of
money.
For
a
day
or
two
she
walked
around
in
a
dreamy
state
as
she
thought
about
her
choices.
Her
daughter
Janie
was
wearing
worn
shoes
and
needed
new
ones.
She
would
buy
cloth
for
new
shirts
for
the
boys.
Her
daughter
Mag
should
have
another
dress.
And
still
there
would
be
enough
left
for
new
stockings
for
her
children.
The
idea
about
how
to
spend
the
dollars
made
her
restless
with
excitement.
On
the
day
she
planned
to
go
shopping
with
the
money,
she
ate
a
light
meal—no!
Between
getting
the
children
fed
and
the
house
cleaned,
and
preparing
herself
to
go
shopping,
she
forgot
to
eat
at
all!
When
she
arrived
at
the
large
department
store,
she
spotted
a
pile
of
silk
stockings
at
the
entrance.
A
sign
nearby
announced
that
they
had
been
reduced
in
price.
A
young
girl
behind
the
counter
asked
her
if
she
wished
to
examine
the
silky
leg
coverings.
She
smiled
as
if
she
had
been
asked
to
inspect
diamond
jewelry,
and
started
to
feel
the
soft,
expensive
items.
Missus
Sommers
picked
up
a
black
pair
and
looked
at
them
closely.
Two
red
marks
suddenly
showed
on
her
pale
face.
She
looked
up
at
the
shop
girl
and
said
proudly,
“Well,
I
will
buy
this
pair.
”
Missus
Sommers
changed
her
cotton
stockings
for
the
new
silk
ones
in
the
ladies’
rest
area.
She
had
let
herself
be
controlled
by
some
machine-like
force
that
directed
her
actions
and
freed
her
of
responsibility.
How
good
was
the
touch
of
the
silk
on
her
skin!
Then
she
put
her
shoes
back
on
and
put
her
old
stockings
into
her
bag.
Next,
she
went
to
the
shoe
department,
where
she
tried
on
a
pair
of
new
boots.
Her
foot
and
ankle
looked
lovely.
She

Harriet
Beecher
Stowe
had
poured
her
heart
into
her
anti-slavery
book
Uncle
Tom’s
Cabin.
But
neither
she
nor
her
first
publisher
thought
it
would
be
a
big
success.
The
publisher
was
so
doubtful
that
he
wanted
her
to
split
the
publishing
costs
with
him,
and
all
she
hoped
was
that
it
would
make
enough
money
for
her
to
buy
a
new
silk
dress.
But
when
the
first
5,
000
copies
were
printed
in
1852,
they
sold
out
in
two
days.
In
a
year
the
book
had
sold
300,
000
copies
in
the
United
States
and
150,
000
in
England.
For
a
while
it
outsold
every
book
in
the
world,
except
the
Bible.
Within
six
months
of
its
release,
a
play
was
made
from
the
book
which
ran
350
performances
in
New
York
and
remained
America’s
most
popular
play
for
80
years.
It
might
appear
that
Uncle
Tom’s
Cabin
was
universally
popular,
but
this
was
certainly
not
true.
Many
people
during
those
pre-Civil
War
days—particularly
defenders
of
the
slavery
system—condemned
it
as
false
propaganda
and
poorly
written
melodrama(传奇剧作品).
Harriet
did
have
strong
religious
views
against
slavery(When
asked
how
she
came
to
write
the
book,
she
replied,
“God
wrote
it.
”),
and
she
tried
to
convince
people
slavery
was
wrong,
so
perhaps
the
book
could
be
considered
propaganda.
But
if
so,
it
was
true
propaganda,
because
it
accurately
described
the
evils
of
slavery.
Though
she
was
born
in
Connecticut,
1832,
as
a
young
woman
she
moved
to
Cincinnati,
Ohio,
when
her
father
accepted
the
presidency
of
newly
founded
Lane
Theological
Seminary(神学院).
Ohio
was
a
free
state,
but
just
across
the
Ohio
River
in
Kentucky,
Harriet
saw
slavery
in
action.
She
lived
18
years
in
Cincinnati,
marrying
Calvin
Stowe,
professor
of
a
college.
In
1851,
Harriet
Beecher
Stowe
began
her
book.
Its
vast
influence
strengthened
the
anti-slavery
movement
and
angered
defenders
of
the
slave
system.
Today
some
historians
think
that
it
helped
bring
on
the
American
Civil
War.
In
fact,
when
Abraham
Lincoln
met
Harriet
at
the
White
House
during
the
Civil
War,
he
said,
“So,
this
is
the
little
lady
who
started
this
big
war.

the
years
I
tried
out
for
other
roles,
but
I
never
got
a
good
part.
Sometimes
I
thought
of
giving
up.
Five
years
later,?I
found
myself
working
in
the
offices
of
a
movie
company.
And
eventually
I
ended
up
as
a
manager
of
this
company
after
years
of
hard
work.

The
Silk
Road
is
a
name
given
to
the
many
trade
routes
that
connected
Europe
and
the
Mediterranean(地中海)with
the
Asian
world.
The
route
is
over
6,
500
km
long
and
got
its
name
because
the
early
Chinese
traded
silk
along
it.
Although
silk
was
the
main
trading
item,
there
were
many
other
goods
that
travelled
along
the
Silk
Road
between
Eastern
Asia
and
Europe.
In
the
course
of
time,
medicine,
perfumes,
spices
and
livestock(家畜)found
their
way
between
continents.
The
Chinese
learned
to
make
silk
thousands
of
years
ago.
For
a
long
time
they
were
the
only
ones
who
knew
how
to
make
this
precious
material.
Only
the
emperor,
his
family
and
his
highest
advisers
were
allowed
to
wear
clothes
made
of
silk.
For
a
long
time
the
Chinese
guarded
this
secret
very
carefully.
The
ancient
Romans
were
the
first
Europeans
who
became
aware
of
this
wonderful
material.
Trading
started,
often
with
Indians
as
middlemen(中间人)who
traded
silk
with
the
Chinese
in
exchange
for
gold
and
silver
which
they
got
from
the
Romans.
Travelling
along
the
route
was
dangerous.
The
hot
desert,
high
mountains
and
sandstorms
made
travelling
a
rough
business.
Most
of
the
goods
along
the
Silk
Road
were
carried
by
caravans(商队).
Traders
sometimes
brought
goods
from
one
destination
on
the
Silk
Road
to
another,
from
where
the
goods
would
be
transported
by
someone
else.
Over
the
centuries
people
settled
along
the
ancient
route
and
many
cities
emerged.
Later
on
there
were
fewer
hardships
to
overcome,
but
by
no
means
was
it
easy.
Religion,
languages
and
diseases
also
spread
along
the
Silk
Road.
Buddhism,
which
originated
in
India,
spread
to
China
along
this
route.
European
traders
probably
brought
the
plague
from
Asia
to
Europe
along
the
ancient
road.
In
the
early
Middle
Ages,
traffic
along
the
route
decreased
because
of
the
decline
of
the
Roman
Empire.
Trading
along
the
Silk
Road
became
stronger
again
between
the
13th
and
14th
centuries,
when
the
Mongols
controlled
central
Asia.
During
the
Age
of
Exploration
the
Silk
Road
lost
its
importance
because
new
sea
routes
to
Asia
were
discovered.
28.
What
do
we
know
about
the
Silk
Road?
A.
It
refers
to
many
trade
routes.
B.
It
was
named
because
the
ancient
Arabians
traded
silk
along
it.
C.

The
Temple
of
the
Moon
is
an
Incan
ceremonial
temple
on
Huayna
Picchu
near
Machu
Picchu,
in
Peru.
The
site
is
made
up
of
stone
masonry
(砌石)
and
an
open-face
and
shallow
cave.
In
the
centre
of
the
cave
is
a
throne
carved
out
of
rock.
Beside
the
throne
are
steps
that
lead
deeper
into
the
cave.
The
Temple
of
the
Moon
dates
back
1,
500
years
and
was
rediscovered
in
1936.
The
Temple
of
the
Moon
consists
of
three
structural
parts:
an
overhanging
cave
with
excellent
stone
works,
a
very
tall
double-jamb
(双重门柱)
doorway
beyond,
and
farther
beyond,
several
structures.
The
temple
also
has
niches
(壁橱)
and
fake
doors
inserted
in
the
stones,
with
a
huge
8
meters
high
by
6
meters
wide
entrance.
Its
three
doors
are
1.
60
meters
high
(in
the
front)
and
1.
00
meter
high
(at
the
sides).
Inside,
there
are
six
niches.
Most
scientists
and
authors
believe
that
the
name
of
the
temple
is
arbitrary
(任意的),
as
many
other
names
given
to
sites
in
Machu
Picchu.
Ruth
M
Wright
and
Alfredo
Valencia
Zegarra,
authors
of
The
Machu
Picchu
Guidebook:
A
self
guided
tour
say
that
they
find
no
evidence
that
the
moon
played
any
part
in
the
use
of
the
temple.
Others
argue
that
the
temple
gets
its
name
from
the
way
moonlight
radiates
(散发)
inside
the
cave
at
night.
The
purpose
of
the
temple’s
being
built
is
not
exactly
known.
There
is
a
theory
that
it
must
have
been
a
royal
tomb,
a
place
of
worship
and
a
look-out
post.
Some
believe
that
this
was
a
place
for
sacrifices
(献祭),
because
the
structure
has
beautiful
niches
and
in
front
of
the
cave,
there
is
a
rock
carved
in
the
shape
of
an
altar
(祭坛).
Others
think
it
was
a
ceremonial
bathing
complex.
The
trail
that
leads
from
the
summit
of
Huayna
Picchu
to
the
temple
is
very
exposed
and
can
be
quite
slippery
(滑的).
A
few
spots
have
a
steel
handrail,
but
a
fall
in
many
places
would
have
serious
results.
The
trail
that
leads
off
from
the
main
Huayna
Picchu
trail
is
easier
and
safer,
but
still
presents
dangers.
32.
Which
of
the
following
is
TRUE
according
to
Paragraphs
1
and

A.
There
are
wonderful
stone
works
inside
the
cave.
B.
There
are
numberless
steps
outside
the
cave.
C.
The
temple
is
factually
a
huge
cave.
D.
The
temple
was
rebuilt
in
1936.

What
can
we
learn
from
Paragraph
3?
A.
Ruth
M
Wright
and
Alfredo

named
the

B.
There’s
evidence
that
the
temple
is
related
to

C.
Scientists

the

For

She

Her

her

The
idea
about
how

the
dollars
made
her
restless
with
excitement.
On
the
day
she
planned
to
go
shopping
with
the

she
ate
a

Between
getting
the

and
the

and
preparing
herself
to

shopping,
she

When

A

A

She

“Well,

Missus

changed
her

Harriet
Beecher
Stowe
had
poured
her
heart
into
her
anti-slavery
book
Uncle
Tom’s
Cabin.
But
neither
she
nor
her
first
publisher
thought
it
would
be
a
big
success.
The
publisher
was
so
doubtful
that
he
wanted
her
to
split
the
publishing
costs
with
him,
and
all
she
hoped
was
that
it
would
make
enough
money
for
her
to
buy
a
new
silk
dress.
But
when
the
first
5,
000
copies
were
printed
in
1852,
they
sold
out
in
two
days.
In
a
year
the
book
had
sold
300,
000
copies
in
the
United
States
and
150,
000
in
England.
For
a
while
it
outsold
every
book
in
the
world,
except
the
Bible.
Within
six
months
of
its
release,
a
play
was
made
from
the
book
which
ran
350
performances
in
New
York
and
remained
America’s
most
popular
play
for
80
years.
It
might
appear
that
Uncle
Tom’s
Cabin
was
universally
popular,
but
this
was
certainly
not
true.
Many
people
during
those
pre-Civil
War
days—particularly
defenders
of
the
slavery
system—condemned
it
as
false
propaganda
and
poorly
written
melodrama(传奇剧作品).
Harriet
did
have
strong
religious
views
against
slavery(When
asked
how
she
came
to
write
the
book,
she
replied,
“God
wrote
it.
”),
and
she
tried
to
convince
people
slavery
was
wrong,
so
perhaps
the
book
could
be
considered
propaganda.
But
if
so,
it
was
true
propaganda,
because
it
accurately
described
the
evils
of
slavery.
Though
she
was
born
in
Connecticut,
1832,
as
a
young
woman
she
moved
to
Cincinnati,
Ohio,
when
her
father
accepted
the
presidency
of
newly
founded
Lane
Theological
Seminary(神学院).
Ohio
was
a
free
state,
but
just
across
the
Ohio
River
in
Kentucky,
Harriet
saw
slavery
in
action.
She
lived
18
years
in
Cincinnati,
marrying
Calvin
Stowe,
professor
of
a
college.
In
1851,
Harriet
Beecher
Stowe
began
her
book.
Its
vast
influence
strengthened
the
anti-slavery
movement
and
angered
defenders
of
the
slave
system.
Today
some
historians
think
that
it
helped
bring
on
the
American
Civil
War.
In
fact,
when
Abraham
Lincoln
met
Harriet
at
the
White
House
during
the
Civil
War,
he
