Consideration and wisdom are necessary before we do everything. Having taken a course of action without _41_, we find at once too many difficulties, small or big, preventing our progress. If we avoid acting hurriedly, we can avoid most of our troubles. For instance, a young man has a gift for teaching and doing research work. What a(n) _42_ act it would be for him to go and work as a businessman! Most people fail to have a satisfactory life because they have _43_ a job for which they didn’t mean to go in. Without taking into consideration our means and abilities for a particular business we should not run _44_ into it.
However, too much care and fear results in failure. It is a _45_ to hesitate or delay action when instant action is called for. When a swimmer has to save a drowning man, he must act at once without delay. Similarly, to rescue a child or a woman from a _46_ house, we must rush in without hesitation. Where there is no room for delay and hesitation, there must be no hesitation or delay. If there is too much care, too much fear of risks, results are often attended with failure.
So only with combination of consideration, courage and confidence can we get over any difficulty. We can be _47_ and realize our aims in life only by just getting the three points put together. Foresight and _48_ combined with courage and confidence in taking unavoidable risks are necessary. With them we can prove ourselves able to deal with _49_ problems and ensure success.

Because plants cannot move or talk, most people believe that they have no feelings and that they cannot receive signals from outside. However, this may not be completely true.
People who studied plants have found out that plants carry a small electrical charge. It is possible to measure this charge with a small piece of equipment called “galvanometer”. The galvanometer is placed on a leaf off the plant, and it records any changes in the electrical field of the leaf. Humans have a similar field which can change when we are shocked or frightened.
A man called Backster used a galvanometer for his studies of plants and was very surprised at his results. He found that if he had two or more plants in a room and he began to destroy one of them - perhaps by pulling off its leaves or by pulling it out of its pot - then the galvanometer on the leaves of the other plants showed a change in the electrical field. It seemed as if the plants were signaling a feeling of shock. This happened not only when Backster started to destroy plants, but also when he destroyed other living things such as insects.
Backster said that the plants also knew if someone had destroyed a living thing some distance away, because they signaled when a man who had just cut down a tree entered the room.
Another scientist, named Sauvin, achieved similar results to Backster’s. He kept galvanometers fixed to his plants all the time and checked regularly to see what the plants were doing. If he was out of the office, he telephoned to find out about the signals the plants were sending. In this way, he found that the plants were sending out signals at the exact times when he felt strong pleasure or pain. In fact, Sauvin could cause a change in the electrical field of his plants over a distance of a few miles simply by thinking about them.
65. Backster was surprised at the results of his studies because _____.

Putting Movies on Mobiles
Movies in the theater get their recognition at awards ceremonies such as the Oscars. But how about movies for phones They are getting their turn at MoFilm — the first mobile film festival.
The first MoFilm competition received 250 entries from more than 100 countries. Entries were restricted to films that were five minutes or less in length — ideal for viewing and sharing on mobile phones. An independent jury then selected a shortlist of five film-makers. The winner was chosen from the shortlist by an audience voting using their phones.
New Platforms
The awards highlight the increasing impact that mobile phones are making in the entertainment industry. Many grassroots filmmakers start out with short films. They are thwarted by the lack of opportunities to screen their work. Therefore, mobile phones are increasingly being seen as a new platform for these short works.
It is a good place for anyone who wants to express themselves and find a way to have that expression be seen by a wide audience. Just think about how many people have mobile phones in the world!
New Technology Advances
MoFilm is pioneering content for mobile and online services that is a world away from Hollywood. The majority of films made for mobiles are now short in length, taking into account the screen size. However this could be overcome as technology advances.
In the near future, longer films will likely be seen on the mobile phone. And there are mobile companies creating phones where users can watch movies at higher quality.
Wherever you see movies, one thing is certain: the quality of work, the simple ability at story telling, and the thing that inspires someone to tell a story can really come from anywhere.

(C)
In the more and more competitive service industry, it is no longer enough to promise customer satisfaction. Today, customer “delight” is what companies are trying to achieve in order to keep and increase market share.
It is accepted in the marketing industry, and confirmed by a number of researchers, that customers receiving good service will promote business by telling up to 12 other people; those treated badly tell tales of woe to up to 20 people. Interestingly, 80 percent of people who feel their complaints are handled fairly will stay loyal.
New challenges for customer care have come when people can obtain goods and services through telephone call centers and the Internet. For example, many companies now have to invest a lot of money in information technology and staff training in order to cope with the “phone rage”---- caused by delays in answering calls, being cut off in mid-conversation or left waiting for long periods.
“Many people do not like talking to machines,” says Dr, Storey, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at City University Business School. “Banks, for example, encourage staff at call centers to use customer data to establish instant and good relationship with them. The aim is to make the customer feel they know you and that you can trust them – the sort of comfortable feelings people have during face-to-face chats with their local branch manager.”
Recommended ways of creating customer delight include: under-promising and over-delivering (saying that a repair will be carried out within five hours, but getting it done within two); replacing a faulty product immediately; throwing in a gift voucher as an unexpected “thank you” to regular customers; and always returning calls, even when they are complaints.
Aiming for customer delight is all very well, but if services do not reach the high level promised, disappointment or worse will be the result. This can be eased by offering an apology and an explanation of why the service did not meet usual standards with empathy (for example, “I know how you must feel”), and possible solutions (replacement, compensation or whatever fairness suggests best meets the case).
Airlines face some of the toughest challenges over customer care. Fierce competition has convinced them at that delighting passengers is an important marketing tool, while there is great potential for customer anger over delays caused by weather, unclaimed luggage and technical problems.
For British Airways staff, a winning telephone style is considered vital in handling the large volume of calls about bookings and flight times. They are trained to answer quickly, with their names, job title and a “we are here to help” attitude. The company has invested heavily in information technology to make sure that information is available instantly on screen.
British Airways also says its customer care policies are applied within the company and staff are taught to regard each other as customers requiring the highest standards of service.
Customer care is obviously here to stay and it would be a foolish company that used slogans such as “we do as we please”. On the other hand, the more customers are promised, the greater the risk of disappointment.
72. The writer mentions “phone rage”(Paragraph 3)to show that ________.
A. customers often use phones to express their anger
B. people still prefer to buy goods online
C. customer care becomes more demanding
D. customers rely on their phones to obtain services
73. If a manager should show his empathy (Paragraph 6), what would be probably say
A. “I know how upset you must be.” B. “I appreciate your understanding.”
C. “I’m sorry for the delay.” D. “I know it’s our fault.”
74. Customer delight is important for airlines because ________.
A. their telephone style remains unchanged
B. they are more likely to meet with complaints
C. the services cost them a lot of money
D. the policies can be applied to their staff
75. Which of the following is conveyed in this article
A. Face-to-face service creates comfortable feelings among customers.
B. Companies that promise more will naturally attract more customers.
C. A company should promise less but do more in a competitive market.
D. Customer delight is more important for air lines than for banks.

Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
(E)
A. The disadvantage(s) of credit cards.B. Clever choice of credit cards.C. The benefits credits cards bring.D. Avoidance of economic trouble by using credit cards wrongly.E. People’s misunderstanding about credit cards.F. Ways to save on the interest.
76.______ Although credit cards are already a more acceptable part of the financial dealings, they are still regarded, especially in the time of a serious economic crisis, by many as being a major part of the “live now pay later” system. Along with hire-purchase regulations, credit cards, according to some, provide encouragement to spend more money. However, it’s only the fool who is dominated by the temptation to live, temporarily at least, beyond their means, and such people would no doubt manage to do so even without credit cards.
77.______ Advertising campaigns have already promoted a growing realization of the advantages of these small pieces of plastic. They avoid the need to carry large amounts of cash and are always useful in emergencies. And the monthly credit card bill is a loyal booker keeping your monthly purchase record and indicating your buying habits.
78.______ All the credit card organizations charge interest on a monthly basis which may work out as high as two percent a year. But sensible purchase using a card can mean that you obtain up to seven weeks interest-free credit. Using the card abroad, where items frequently take a long time to be included on your account, can extend this period even further.
79.______ It is worthwhile consulting more credit card companies before deciding on a particular credit card. It is necessary to consider the amount of credit granted, interest rates, which may vary slightly; the number and range of outlets, though most cards cover major stores.
80.______ Undoubtedly, if used wisely, a credit card can cost nothing, or at lease help to tide you over a period of financial difficulty. However, we should also remember that the wrong use of the little plastic may drag us deep into financial troubles. More than half of the American personal bankruptcy and credit failure cases are connected with the wrong use of the credit card. Therefore, every time you open your wallet and reach for a credit card, remember to ask yourself:” Is the item necessary to me ” and “Do I really need so many credit cards ”
Section D
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
You’re lost in the world of dreams while sleeping. You roll over, smiling as you encounter a swimming pool filled with chocolate. And then your wonderful dream becomes a nightmare where someone is screaming “GET UP!”—This is just what every teenager goes through each morning!
Now, there seems to be one school that finally understands that requiring teens to show up at 9:00 a. m. is cruel to both the kids and the school. The Monkseaton High School in Britain recently did an experiment to see if there was any difference in student behavior if they just pouched back the start of their day by one hour, from 9:00 a. m. to 10:00 a. m. And the results are astonishing. Since using the later start, Monkseaton has seen higher test scores. One of the reasons, of course, is that the teenagers are much happier to have the extra hour of sleep, but there is also a scientific reason behind why they need the extra sleep.
The school’s decision to push back the time was based on research conducted by Oxford professor Russell Foster. He concluded teenagers have different sleep cycles from adults. That is to say, teenagers go to bed late and wake up last. While adults are alert and ready at 8 a. m., teenagers are not fully awake, until 10 a. m., sometimes even noon. Memory tests prove that the more difficult classes should be in the afternoon when teenagers are most alert.
Teachers may argue that their students perform better in the morning. But in reality it is because in the morning their students are still sleepy, and are easier to control. By lunch, teachers are exhausted and kids are ready to go giving the impression that students lose concentration over the day.
The Monkseaton school officials are definitely encouraged by the results and plan on voting in June to make it a permanent change. Now if only the rest of the high schools in the world would follow their example, and allow all teens to get some extra zzzz’s. Personally, as a tired sixteen-year-old, a late start would help me and my chemistry grade rise.
