It is "an approach to the truth of feeling", and it "can save your life". It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.
I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

Robert Todd Duncan was born in 1903 in the southern city of Danville,Kentucky. His mother was his first music teacher. As a young man,he continued his music study in Indianapolis,Indiana.
In 1930，he completed more musical education at Columbia University in New York City. Then he moved to Washington. For fifteen years, he taught music at Howard University in Washington. At that time, not many black musicians were known for writing or performing classical music. Teaching at Howard gave Duncan the chance to share his knowledge of classical European music with a mainly black student population. He taught special ways to present the music.These special ways became known as the Duncan Technique.
Besides teaching，Duncan sang in several operas with performers who were all black. But it seemed that he always would be known mainly as a concert artist. However，his life took a different turn in the middle 1930s. At that time, the famous American music writer George Gershwin was looking for someone to play a leading part in his new work Porgy and Bess. The music critic (评论家) of the New York Times newspaper suggested Todd Duncan. Duncan had almost decided not to try for the part as he knew it would not be easy to get it. But he changed his mind. He sang a piece from an Italian opera for Gershwin. He had sung only a few minutes when Gershwin offered him the part. He became famous because of the part in Porgy and Bess.
Todd Duncan gained fame as an opera singer and concert artist. But his greatest love in music was teaching. When he stopped teaching at Howard，he continued giving singing lessons in his Washington home until the week before his death.

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful conditions. Social support consists of exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.
Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移注意力) us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support — money aid, material resources, and needed services — that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

The house was quiet at 5 a.m. and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring (轻微颤动声) of the freezer had been the sea.

The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world. Over the first rocks, along to the point, Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.
He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious now But it would be silly to go back now after so much trouble. He needn’t go in all the way…

A little boy invited his mother to attend his school’s first teacher-parent meeting. When she said she would go, he was disappointed as he had always been ashamed of his mother’s scar that covered nearly the entire right side of her face. Nearly two-thirds of my 62 classmates has ever done or are doing part-time jobs, working as shop assistants, waiters in fast food restaurants or librarians. About half of them take up part-time jobs to help solve financial problems for their families. Others give up their leisure time because the jobs provide them with good chances to enrich their social experience and put what they have learned in class into practice. The other students do not do part-time jobs because under great pressure, students of senior three can not afford the time for the jobs which are poorly paid. Besides, their parents wouldn’t allow them to do that.

A boy was ashamed of his mother’s scar on the face. Knowing by accident it was caused when she tried to rescue him from a terrible fire at the risk of her life, he was touched and regretful.
Children are said to be a gift from God for parents. Therefore, most parents are grateful for this great gift and never hesitate to sacrifice for their children. My friend, Tom, is disabled from birth, who can only move in a wheelchair. His parents devote all their love to him though most of their friends and relatives try to persuade them to give birth to one more child, which may at least ensure their happy life in their late years. Considerable difficulties are involved in looking after a disabled one, but Tom’s parents make every effort to ensure he can live as happy a life as any normal child. Their devotion and selfless love make Tom an active, confident boy and a top student in school, the most promising one to be admitted to Beijing University.
Tom’s story is but one of the moving stories between parents and children. No one can deny that parents are the ones who love us most and deserve our deepest love. As children, we should always be thankful to their love and be ready to love them in return.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

Robert Todd Duncan was born in 1903 in the southern city of Danville,Kentucky. His mother was his first music teacher. As a young man,he continued his music study in Indianapolis,Indiana.
In 1930，he completed more musical education at Columbia University in New York City. Then he moved to Washington. For fifteen years, he taught music at Howard University in Washington. At that time, not many black musicians were known for writing or performing classical music. Teaching at Howard gave Duncan the chance to share his knowledge of classical European music with a mainly black student population. He taught special ways to present the music.These special ways became known as the Duncan Technique.
Besides teaching，Duncan sang in several operas with performers who were all black. But it seemed that he always would be known mainly as a concert artist. Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. The house was quiet at 5 a.m. and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the big freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt of the cave last night. The purring (轻微颤动声) of the freezer had been the sea.

Children are said to be a gift from God for parents. Therefore, most parents are grateful for this great gift and never hesitate to sacrifice for their children. My friend, Tom, is disabled from birth, who can only move in a wheelchair. His parents devote all their love to him though most of their friends and relatives try to persuade them to give birth to one more child, which may at least ensure their happy life in their late years. Considerable difficulties are involved in looking after a disabled one, but Tom’s parents make every effort to ensure he can live as happy a life as any normal child. Their devotion and selfless love make Tom an active, confident boy and a top student in school, the most promising one to be admitted to Beijing University.
Tom’s story is but one of the moving stories between parents and children. No one can deny that parents are the ones who love us most and deserve our deepest love. As children, we should always be thankful to their love and be ready to love them in return.
