"USA? Britain? Which country is better to study in?"We often hear such discussions. As China opens its door, it is a dream for many Chinese students to study abroad. They want to learn about the outside world.
It’s true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Their foreign language skills will be improved and it may be easier to find jobs.
But there are problems that should be considered (考虑). Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language.?
Students must also learn to live without parents care and deal with all kinds of things they haven抰 had to do before, like looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad sinking into an ocean of difficulties and giving up finally. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.
Finally, studying abroad brings a heavy burden(负担)to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth?
We know that there are many famous people who succeed?in great things through their hard work in China. Liu Xiang is a good example. Once an American teacher invited him there, but he refused. He kept training hard with his Chinese teacher. He surprised the world when he won a gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games. So when you wonder which country is better to study in, think again.

Do you have the following experiences?
★When you talk through a park, a noise from the background is becoming louder and clearer. Then you can find that a group of women who are gathering at the side of path. In the cold breeze(微风) of winter, they’ re moving their arms and legs to rhythm(节奏).
★You want to sleep late into noon on weekend mornings, but find it impossible because the seniors(年长者) have been dancing since the early hours, make a lot of noise.
★Sometimes, you want to have a rest or take a walk with friends in a quiet park, only to be interrupted (被阻止/打断的) by music associated(联系/联盟/陪伴) with a group dancing. It is really an annoying problem.
This kind of dancing is called Square Dancing. It seems that if you go around China, you can see these dancing everywhere in the public space. Also in foreign countries, Chinese Square Dancing is very famous. On January 14, 2015, Chinese seniors danced on the square out of the stadium(体育馆) where a soccer game between China and Uzbekistan(乌兹别克斯坦) was being held during the Asian Cup in Brisbane(布里斯班).
But in Britain dancing in public is not a cultural habit. You won’t see any age group swinging their arms and tapping their feet in a park. Usually, they just take a walk for exercise.
Most people think that Square Dancing should be stopped. It disturbs people and makes people feel annoyed. But do you know why these women choose Square Dancing?
For seniors in China, to dance together is a way to keep healthy and be social. With most of them old-aged, they have lots of free time to do whatever they like. There is no more work and their kids have left. They will feel lonely and bored after retiring(退休). So the people who want to keep healthy and stay away from loneliness dance together. I like seeing these women enjoy themselves. They remind us of the importance of exercise as we get older. Besides, most of them have raised whole families. Now it is their time to have fun and enjoy some peace.

An 11-year-old blind girl is proud of walking alone every day to and from school. Why? She has to walk past so many barriers (障碍物) in her way. The girl's home is near the school, yet her mother follows her without letting her know.
The case of the girl shows the barrier-free facilities (设施) are not enough in her city. Many other cities are short of barrier-free facilities as well. There's no well-designed path for the blind. In fact, in the early 2000s, some cities started to build barrier-free facilities for disabled people. However, almost 20 years later, only a few large cities have had facilities of high quality.
It's common that sidewalks are taken up with barriers. Few workers are sent to move them away, so it's dangerous for the blind to walk on them. Also, some other barrier-free facilities are badly destroyed(毁坏). Only a few workers are assigned (分配) to do the task of repairing the broken ones.
Some ideas can make a difference-build more barrier-free facilities and employ more workers to protect them –but hard to be put into practice, because both of them require money. In a word, more money is needed to carry on with the work. It’s our duty to make life easy for disabled people, so that they can live without barriers some day.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the Chinese seven-string zither (七弦琴) , also known as the guqin, one of the four arts - along with go, calligraphy and painting. It first appeared over 3, 000 ago and represents China's solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the gugin had only five strings, representing the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Later. in the Zhou dynasty, King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son, King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambience (环境气氛) was important in playing the Chinese zither. Usually, it was practised in quiet setting and never for public performance.
Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the quqin mixed with the echoes (回音) from the mountains, until the musician found himself at one with nature. Playing it in snow was also a favorite pastime for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also. a night with moonlight was considered ideal for Playing the guqin. Wang Wei (701-761), a highly talented man of the Tang dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually around three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes long. Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements, Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute.
Nowadays, there are fewer than one thousand well-trained gugin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters. The original number of several thousand pieces has greatly reduced to only a hundred works by today. The guqin and its music was added to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产) in 2003.

Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a metre tall, and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.
For many months each year, emperors live near the sea in large groups called colonies. However, in May, the weather gets colder and ice covers large areas of ocean. Each colony moves many kilomtres from the water.
Sharing the work
There, each mother penguin lays just one egg. Then all the hungry mothers must walk back to the ocean to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of the feet, under a special piece of skin called the brood pouch. For two months, the father penguins keep the eggs safe and warm. Antarctica. Most animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay. In this time, without food, a father penguin can lose almost half of his weight.

As a proverb says, “Your tongue has the power of life and death.” This means that your words have power to finally cause things to happen, even life or death.
We may all experience the power of words in our life, even when we were very young. A child is blamed(责备) by teachers or parents, and after that, he might probably think of himself as a bad child. Most kids have that experience. They say it is important to praise children four times for each negative(负面的) word. Blaming will make things worse, while positive words are helpful especially when being in trouble or in need. When we fail the exam, encouraging words from our teachers or parents make us work harder at our lessons.
Encouraging words can go quite a long way. They lift people up. For example, encouraging words to someone who is sad can help them make it through the day. Words can have a powerful effect on your brain. And it will in turn(相应地) have a great influence on your action.
Everything you do depends on what you choose to do. It's not your parents, your past relationships or your job, but you and only you that are responsible for every goal you set. If you have dreams in life, write them down and speak them out. Your words are likely to bring out something amazing.

In 30 years from now, what will we eat? Will the food still be the same as it is now?
The United Nations says that there will be over 9 billion people in the world by 2050. Our food needs will grow by 70%. What we eat now may not be enough for humans in the future. That is to say, we'll have to turn to something else. But what else can we eat? Here are a few possible choices.
Veggie(Vegetable) meat
A new kind of hamburger is now popular in the US. It looks the same as any other hamburger, and so is the taste. But it's actually a 揵eef burger made out of plants. The company behind the burger, Impossible Foods, uses peas and potatoes to make the “beef”. They take coloring, protein(蛋白质) and fats from these plants and mix them together.
Making meat out of plants uses less water and land than raising animals for meat. It also creates fewer greenhouse gases. Some food companies are making chicken, pork and other meat out of plants, too—follow the same steps as making the “beef”.
Insects
Insects take up little space and don't make much waste. They also have more protein than beef, chicken and pork. This makes insects another possible food of the future.
It's common for people in some places to eat whole insects. But most people probably won't want to see the insects they eat. So in the future, people will first turn insects used for food into powder(粉末). Then they can use the powder to make other foods like chips, protein bars, biscuits and so on.
Algae
The BBC says algae farming could become the world's biggest farming industry in the future. They point out that algae is cheap and grows very quickly. Also, it's very nutritious(有营养的). It has much more protein and oil than many other plants.
Besides eating algae as a dish on its own, people may also use algae oil and algae butter in the future. Some algae has a strong taste. The UK scientists are trying to use algae to take the place of salt.

American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students must select (挑选) their subjects and teachers first.
Selecting is very important for your marks in America. So at the first term, don't select too many subjects, or you'll feel very nervous and tired. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, time arranging, marks and textbooks. At the same time, you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called 搆iller by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him, because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades. There is another thing after you select the subjects and teachers. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each one is about ?$30-50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.
In class, discussing is very important. The teacher encourages you to ask questions or show your own opinions. They don't usually ask you to sit well. Instead they allow you to sit or stand anywhere you like.

What would you do if you felt anxious(焦虑的)? Would you feel better if someone else could share his or her experiences with you? In the United States, two teenage girls set up a mental health camp called “Healing(治愈) Hearts” to help people deal with anxiety.
The idea of creating the camp came from Dinah Martinez, 17, and her schoolmate Janet Martinez, 18. Both girls suffered from anxiety.
Dinah Martinez always did well in school. “But then I just started to collapse(崩溃),” Dinah Martinez said. She stopped talking to her friends, stopped going to school for three weeks and stayed at home.
Janet Martinez was anxious in elementary school. Things got even worse in junior high. “It was a lot of pressure(压力) I put on myself. I would wake up in the morning and it was like my heart was racing,” she said.
The girls' camp idea got support from Girls Leading Our World(GLOW) in the US. The organization awarded them $5,000 to put on the camp for other teenage girls.
The “Healing Hearts” camp was created to “help deal with anxiety, especially with girls in high school because that's when they are the most vulnerable(脆弱的),” Janet Martinez said.
On the first day of the camp, 10 girls were there. Experts at the camp talked about anxiety. They helped girls who were experiencing anxiety. The girls learned how to calm themselves when they are anxious. They learned about calming methods like deep breathing and guided mediation(调节).
“It's good to know that someone else is going through the same thing as me and we can both help each other out,” Dinah Martinez said.

Creating a study plan
Studying is important to students. But it is always difficult to find enough time to study every subject you need. So a good plan helps you to make sure of your success in study.
Then, how to make a study plan? Well, you can begin with listing all the subjects you need to study and make sure what you need to do for each subject. Next, you should decide how much time you should spend on different subjects. Now, it is a good idea to study at the same time every day. In this way, you actually have a plan you can remember easily. While arranging(安排) time for each subject, you also need to make sure that you still have time for family, friends and rest. This is because you won't be able to succeed in your studies unless you balance your personal life and your study.
Once the plan is made, the next thing you need to do is to follow it. One of the biggest challenges in following your study plan is that you will be tempted (诱惑) to avoid it and do something relaxing, or fun instead. Luckily, you can fight this temptation by taking breaks. But be sure not to take extra breaks or too long breaks as it can affect your plan. So at the start of your break, set an alarm clock to remind you when your break is over. Also, you need to use your break wisely. For example, go for a short walk, eat a small snack, or listen to some music.
To avoid forgetting to follow your plan, try to get into the habit of looking at your calendar every day. Sometimes our plans are hard to follow because some important people in our lives distract(使分心)us from our goals. In order to avoid this, tell people in your life about your plan. Put up a copy of your study guide at home so you and your family can see it, and email a copy to your friends so they know when you have spare time.

Title: Inner voice helps a lot throughout our lives.
When you couldn’t open your mouth till the first two years on the earth, inner voice helps you understand things. Inner voice always shows thoughts and ideas in the body.
It justifies(判断)what is right and what is wrong. When we go against inner voice, we usually feel uncomfortable throughout our lives.
Sometimes when we are feeling sad, we seem to need some kind of support in spirit. We usually speak to our closest friend or our dearest family member during times of unhappiness to feel better. After talking to them, we suddenly feel active again, because our inner voice reminds us to get on with things and leave the things of the past in the memory.
Inner voice is always right most of the time, because it knows us better than others and even ourselves. It s good to go by inner voice most of the time. Whenever you are trying to smoke, or whenever you are asked to choose one side in an argument, you are always worried about the result. During these times, your inner voice tells you what to do. If you don抰 follow your inner voice, you might be unhappy in the future. It s our own choice to either pay no attention to our inner voice or follow it and search for real happiness.

Tape-Measure Murder is a short story by Agatha Christie. In the story, Miss Politt, the dressmaker, finds that Mrs. Spenlow is dead in her house in a small village called St Mary Mead. Everybody, including the police, thinks that Mr. Spenlow is the murderer (凶手) because he is so calm and quiet after discovering his wife’ s death. But after the police talk to Miss Marple, she finds out the real murderer.
The best part of the story is when Miss Marple explains how she solves the mystery (疑案) by noticing a tiny pin (别针) on a policeman’s uniform. Her explanation is very clear and clever. Miss Marple is my favorite character in the story. I think she is very special because she is just an old lady but she is even smarter than the policemen. I never thought that an old lady could be the main character of a detective story!
Can you guess who the murderer is? Read the book to find out! You will enjoy the story very much because the ending is so surprising.

Oct.16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It’s used to remind people not to waste food and fight hunger.
A big number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. Food shortage(匮乏)is a big problem worldwide. Right now, there are more than 1,000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts(干旱)and floods recently. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. Sometimes we cook too much, or we don’t use it before it goes bad. The average(平均的)person throws away 50 kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food produced worldwide goes to waste each year.
That is over1, 300, 000 million kilograms of food being wasted. The amount of food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America can feed 300 million a year.
So think twice next time you want to throw away food. By cutting down on food waste, we could help put food on the empty plates of some hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat in a restaurant. If you can抰 eat all you order, take the rest home. Don抰 be too picky about food so that you don抰 leave any on your plate. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源)are also wasted while growing, transporting and cooking the food. These things all take energy, time and water.
