Mother Nature is a cruel mistress. Why? Read on to find the answer.
Venice
This iconic city is sinking rapidly. The canals that make up the streets of Venice rise 2mm every year, making relics of history go under the surface of water and destroying architecture. Experts warn that without intervention (干预) , this city will disappear back into the water at an even faster rate, consumed by rising sea level from melting polar ice caps.
Machu Picchu
These iconic ruins have drawn adventurous tourists into the mountains of South America. The forces of natural erosion (侵蚀) have been accelerated by tourism and this landmark faces severe influence from increasing foot traffic. The Peruviar government recently suggested a cable car that would cut out the intense hike up to the ruins, making the site instantly accessible to millions, but the future of Machu Picchu remains uncertain.
Glacier National Park
Perhaps you’ve heard that the ice caps are melting. But nowhere is more apparent in the United States than in Glacier National Park. Estimates indicate that the glaciers that are part of the beauty of this national landmark will disappear entirely in the next two decades.
The Great Barrier Reef
Hidden from view beneath the waves, the Great Barrier Reef has been rapidly dying off. Nearly fifty percent of coral which once occupied a large area is gone, destroyed by pollution and disease.
21.What can we learn about Machu Picchu?
A. It’s famous for cable cars.
B. It has no convenient traffic.
C. It’s well preserved by the locals.
D. It bears a heavy burden of tourism.
22. Which place probably needs visitors to dive into the water to enjoy its beauty?

Science can’t explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-round good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张) levels and blood pressure in people - half of them pet owners –while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed (放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall-mostly with their dogs - and found it worth doing.
24. What does the text mainly discuss?
A.People’s opinions of keeping pets. B.How pets help people calm down.
C.What pets bring to their owners. D.Pet’s value in medical research.
25. We learn from the text that a person with heart disease has a better chance of getting well if __________.
A.he has a pet companion B.he has less stress of work
C.he often does mental arithmetic D.he is taken care of by his family
26. According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing stressful tasks?
A.They have lower blood pressure. B.They become more patient.
C.They are less nervous. D.They are in higher spirits.
27. The research mentioned in the last paragraph reports that ___________.
A.people with dogs did more exercise
B.dogs lost the same weight as people did
C.dogs liked exercise much more than people did
D.people without dogs found the program unhelpful
C
Cortana, Alexa, Siri, These are names of robotic voices that are often programmed on electronic tablets. They also become default (默认) identities for people with speech disorders who rely on technology to communicate. Now some speech scientists are developing personalized voices to reflect the broader diversity of the people who use them. To do it, they are tapping into a vast network of volunteers who are donating their voices to share with people who can’t speak.
The effort to build an international “Human Voicebank” has attracted more than 17,000 volunteers from 110 countries, including Priyanka Pandya, a 16-year-old from Columbia, Md., who plans to spend her winter vacation recording a string of sentences into her computer “To be able to give somebody the gift of voice, I think that’s really, really powerful,” she said.
“Everyone has a voice,” said Rupal Patel, founder of Vocalic, the company that started the voicebank. “Even people who are unable to speak have sounds that are unique to them.” Her company designs personalized voices by recording the unique sounds of the user, and then mixing them with 6 to 10 hours of recordings from a voice donor, matched by age, gender and region. The company is developing voices now for its first 100 customers.
Also, people’s voices change. The company is looking for donors who are willing to record their voices, and then record them again a few years later, as they get older.
Some of the first customers say they are happy with the results, John A. Gregoire was one of the first customers to receive a personalized voice from Vocalic last December. The voice came eight years after he developed ALS (肌萎缩侧索硬化症) and more than six years have passed since his voice became unintelligible to everyone except his wife and youngest son. “Having a distinctive voice is like getting something back that was stolen.” John said.
28. What does the author say about the voicebank?

C. It helps to recognize special voices. D. It offers people personalized voices free.
29. The example of John A Gregoire is given in the text to stress ________.
A. customers’ desire for personalized voices
B. VocaliD’s efforts to develop personalized voices

D. VocaliD’s success in designing personalized voices
30. What does the underlined word “unintelligible” mean?

On Wednesday, nearly 300 kids will take part in the National Spelling Bee. Fewer will make it to the following day’s semifinals, where one mistake means elimination(淘汰). I’d bet that many of them will be silently praying—not on the first word. I knew it because I was there 17 years ago.
I was 14 year old then. My mother and I had flown from Kentucky to Washington, but she was no strange to the capital. My older sister had already competed at nationals.
When my sister was 14 and I was 12, we trained together. We began with the Suggested List given out at school—hundreds of words printed on a poster that folded up like a map. When the words along the creases(折痕) began to disappear, we bought additional spelling bodes.
Sometimes my mother tested us, reading words most English teachers wouldn’t know how to pronounce, let alone my Indian-born mother. When she pointed out the misspelled words, I blamed her accent for my errors!
When it was my turn, I approached the microphone and waited for my first word.
The announcer was somewhere to my left, a man who pronounced clearly. “Barbican,” he said.
It seemed that my competitors were secretly complaining at the relative ease of my word. Would they laugh at me if I couldn’t spell it? Would my mother be disappointed in me? That last syllable could go two ways: C-A-N or C-O-N. Which one was right? Finally I decided on C-O-N.
Of course, I was eliminated and guided to the Comfort Room, where parents couldn’t enter. Inside, recent losers were sitting around a table abundant with junk food.
We casually mentioned the words that defeated us, like a special ceremony to welcome each new arrival. Then we changed the subjects if we’d already moved on from missed words and lost opportunities.
Eventually, I went out and saw my mother.
“Well,” she said, “I guess you won’t be doing this again.” Yes, next year I would be 25 and not allowed to take part in the competition.
32. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. the difficulty of the first word. B. The fierce competition.
C. The nervousness of the kids. D. The strict rules.
33. The author failed probably because .
A. she was unable to relax B. the announcer had an accent
C. her competitors disturbed her D. she didn’t practise hard enough
34. What did the author do in the Comfort Room?
A. She met her mother. B. She comforted new arrivals.
C. She talked with other losers. D. She watched the competition.
35. Why did the author’s mother say the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?
A. She was disappointed in the author.
B. The author would be beyond the age limit.
C. She didn’t want the author to suffer again.
D. The author had no interest in the competition.
第二节(共5小题,每小题 2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many people believe sharks(鲨鱼)are dangerous and will always try to hurt or even kill humans._______36_______
A shark exhibition at the National Aquarium(水族馆)in Baltimore, US proves this. Visitors can touch young sharks, see their eggs develop and watch a dozen different species(种类)swim smoothly around a huge tank.
Most people fail to realize that shark attacks don’t happen very often. Humans are more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark. _______37_______ They can watch them develop inside the eggs and feel the skin of the older swimmers. "People fear what they don’t know" said Nancy Hotchkiss, an organizer of the exhibition, which runs till December. “Sharks have been round for 400 million years and play an important role in the ocean’s food chain. We want people to discover that sharks are amazing animals that need our respect and protection.”
_______38_______ A study, published in January in the US magazine Science, found that almost all recorded shark species have fallen by half in the past eight to fifteen years.
Thousands of sharks are hunted in Asia for special foods, such as shark fin (鱼翅)soup. _______39_______ More than half of all sharks are smaller than one meter long.”
Some fishing methods are actually cleaning out the ocean" said Dave Schofield, the manager of the aquarium’s ocean health program. “The fishermen threw them away like rubbish.” _______40_______
A shocking 100 million sharks are killed every year by humans around the world.
And many others get caught in nets, while fishermen are hunting other fish.
Sharks can smell and taste blood, and trace it back to its source.
In fact, 94 percent of the world’s 400 species are harmless to humans.
Whoever do harm to sharks shall be punished by international laws.
It is a worrying situation and some areas have put measures in place to protect these species of fish.
And to make this point clear, the museum has set up a special touching pool for children.
