第一节 (共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
I used to be crazy about the hunting season. The excitement of waiting for a prey(猎物) and the pride of showing off the kill fascinated me. However, everything changed after that cold morning.
Early on that day of the late fall, I set off alone for the woods, packing a gun, a bottle of hot coffee and three thick sandwiches. After finding the fresh deer’s tracks in the snow, I settled down behind a little bush.
I sat there for about an hour. It was then that I saw him. A deer, a big beautiful deer! There was no cover nearer to him than 30 yards. Surely I couldn’t miss! I waited for him to realize I was there. I waited for him to be shocked and run away. But he fooled me completely. He came to towards me! He was curious, I suppose, or maybe he was stupid - how else can you explain it?
He was not quite young, but a deer in his prime. He must have known about men and guns. But he came closer, putting one foot before the other, slowly and purposefully. His big eyes never moved from my face. Well, that deer walked right up to where I was sitting. Then he stopped and looked at me!
What happened next is hard to believe, but it’s true. And it all seemed quite natural. Just as when a friendly young deer comes near you, I reached up and scratched(挠) his head. And he liked to be scratched. In fact, he practically asked for more. Then, I fed him my sandwich! Yes, I know what a deer eats, but that deer ate my sandwich. Well, he finally went his way, down the hill and up the deer trail. Shoot him? Not me. You wouldn’t have either, not after that. I just watched him go.
When I was about half way back, I heard two shots, followed by a dull slam(撞击) a few seconds later. Those two shots usually mean a kill. I had forgotten there were other hunters that day.
Those hunters would never know they could have scratched his head.
21. Why didn’t the author kill the deer?
A. He was fooled by the tricky deer.
B. He preferred to shoot a shy deer.
C. He was too shocked to shoot the deer.
D. He was touched by the deer’s closeness.
22. What most probably happened to the deer in the end?
A. It was taken home by the author.
B. It managed to escape being shot.
C. It was shot to death by someone else.
D. It formed a friendship with another hunter.
23. What’s the best title of this text?
A. Why is man so cruel?
B. Why did I quit hunting?
C. How can we protect deer?
D. When will man stop hunting?
B
We love the sea. We swim into it, live near it, build beside it, and even imagine living under the sea. But we’re terrified of it, too. For much of our history, we have turned to “hard engineering” to control the marine environment and manage its influence on us. We build dams, sea walls and channels. But all these efforts seem to fail. The sea has a habit of taking back its own. And we suffer.
Johnston, a marine ecologist, is advocating for “blue engineering” — the marine version of the “green engineering” movement on land that has seen nations like Singapore building the walls and roofs of the concrete jungle with plant life.
We are expanding further into the marine environment. This practice does harm to marine ecosystems. We’re loving the sea to death, but we’ve not been thinking about design of structures (建筑物) with respect to ecology. Some coastal structures create shade, which reduces the growth of seaweed. Bright lights at night contuse species such as turtles. That’s why blue engineering comes in.
Throughout the world people are starting to turn things around. Researchers with the World Harbour Project are creating tiles (瓦片) similar to the natural structures found on rocky shores with 3D printing technology. These make more attractive homes for marine creatures. Researchers are also actively seeding these tiles with local seaweeds and creatures such as the Sydney rock oyster, which is particularly good at improving water quality. Twelve harbors around the world are taking part in this marine tile experiment, each working with their own unique marine life.
It’s a far cry from the days when huge number of old tyres were thrown, into the sea to build “artificial reef” (人工礁石). Those clumsy early attempts are now costing millions to remove, showing just how far we have yet to go in understanding how best to co-habit with the underwater world.
24. What do we know about “hard engineering”?
A. It can control the influence of sea.
B. It has improved sea environment.
C. It forces sea creatures to settle down.
D. It has not achieved its original purpose.
25. Paragraph 3 focuses on the ______ of “blue engineering”.
A. disadvantages B. definition C. necessity D. measures
26. Which of the following belongs to “blue engineering”?
A. Designing structures using sea creatures.
B. Expanding further into the marine environment.
C. Building homes for sea creatures with plant life.
D. Creating an artificial reef off shore with old tyres

Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua have made medical history as the first cloned primates (灵长目动物),with the efforts of a team of Chinese scientists.
According to the journal Cell , it is a milestone for biomedical research. It could potentially lead to the development of new treatments for human disease. But it also makes ethicists (伦理学者) about where this all might lead. Do Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua suggest the coming of human cloning?
Born in 1996, Dolly the sheep was the first cloned mammal, and was followed by many more, including dogs, rabbits and pigs. But researchers were unable to
clone primates because the genes involved didn’t react well to the procedure. Over the years, a handful of research institutions have tried and failed to birth a live monkey clone.
The successful team, at Shanghai’s Chinese Academy of Sciences, used the same basic method that created Dolly but had failed in subsequent(随后的) primate cloning attempts. It’s called somatic(躯体)cell nuclear transfer and involves transferring DNA from adult cells into eggs that have had their own DNA removed. Without the addition of sperm(精子), the eggs are stimulated (刺激)chemically to develop into an embryo that’s a clone of the DNA donor(提供者). The embryo is then placed into a substitue(替代) for gestation(妊娠).
The researchers modified the approach in two important ways, however. Rather than use adult cells in the DNA transfer, they used fetal (胎儿)cells, which react better to chemical stimuli(刺激)for embryo development, says Mu-ming Poo, director of the academy’s Institute of Neuroscience and a co-autho of the paper. They also fine-tuned the cell transfer process to minimize damage to the eggs.
As for creating human clones, Poo says the research shows it can be done, but he and his team have no interest. “Besides many technical dificulties that remain to be overcome, we see no justifiable reason to do human cloning,” says Poo, “nor would the societies around the world permit such an attempt.”
While human cells may be cloned experimentally, for example to research tissue regeneration, the cloning of an entire human is illegal in more than 70 countries, according to the Center for Genetics and Society. U.S. law does not ban it, but over a dozen states do.
(Discover 2019J&F,P60.)
27. About somatic cell nuclear transfer, which of the following statements is true?
A. It needs the combination of sperm and eggs.
B. The eggs keep their own DNA in the process.
C. The embryo has the DNA of the adult donor.
D. The embryo gestates in the eggs donor’s body.
28. What does the underlined word “justifiable” mean in paragraph 6 ?
A. acceptable B. incredible C. valuable D. reliable
29. Which does not contribute to the success of the primate cloning?
A.The right donor cells B. The fine-tuned transfer process
C.The united team D. The reduced damage to the eggs
30. Where can this passage be found?
A.Nature Exploration B. Science Magazine
C. Medicine World D. World Wonders
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Our world is more connected than ever before thanks to technology. 31 . Indeed,it is becoming increasingly important that we all learn how to deal with this painful feeling.
You should be determined to actively end your loneliness. We often end up passively waiting for someone else to make us feel less lonely. You may feel that your loneliness indicates that nobody is willing to connect with you. And there is nothing you can do about it. But that is far from the truth. 32 .
You should find reasons why you are lonely. We all feel lonely for different reasons. Some of us have no one to interact with on a consistent basis and that’s why we feel lonely. You may feel that the people in your life don’t share your thoughts and ideas. 33 you need to identify it. And you know exactly how to handle your loneliness.
34 . People who are lonely tend to fall into destructive mental habits. They try to avoid the pain of not being understood and being disconnected by not giving people an opportunity to understand and connect with them. So the solution is to share your thoughts and feelings with others and to do so openly and fearlessly.
You should find people who share your interests. 35 everybody is interested in something. And just as there are many interests, there are many people who share those interests. Find what interests you and connect with others on that basis.
A.Whatever the reason is
B.When you feel really lonely

D.Whether it’s coin collecting or video games

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only has one dime(一角硬币)left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at the door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while. “Would you please give me some…. a drink of water?” the boy dared not look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy, so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” She replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in God and the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later, the young woman became seriously ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among these famous specialists, Dr . Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation(会诊). When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

Paragraph1
Dressed in his doctor’s gown, he went in to see her. He saw her lie on the bed and recognized her at once. Her lovely face looked pale. He went back to the consultation room and determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case. Luckily, after a long struggle the battle was won. Doctor Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on the side.
Paragraph2
The bill was sent to her room. Hesitantly she took it. She was afraid to open it because she was sure that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally, she opened the bill, on the other side of which a note caught her attention. She read these words, “Paid in full with a glass of milk.” signed Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she prayed silently, “Thank you, God!”
