Mark Twain left school when he was twelve. He had little school education. In spite of this, he became the most famous writer of his time. He made millions of dollars by writing. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, but he is better known all over the world as Mark Twain, his pen name.
Mark Twain was born in 1835 and he was not a healthy baby. In fact, he was not expected to live through the first winter. But with his mother’s tender care, he managed to survive. As a boy, he caused much trouble for his parents. He used to play jokes on all of his friends and neighbours. He didn’t like to go to school, and he constantly ran away from home. He always went in the direction of the nearby Mississippi River. He was nearly drowned nine times.
After his father’s death in 1847, Mark Twain began to work for a printer, who only provided him with food and clothing. Then, he worked as a printer, a river-boat pilot and later joined the army. But shortly after that he became a miner. During this period, he started to write short stories. Afterwards he became a full-time writer.

There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual(个体的) ant hardly weighs anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. For animals their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social behavior.
In colonies(群体) that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. Where we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend primarily on pheromones(外激素), chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to prepare for a conflict as a defense unit.
In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy.
Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on Earth, for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a collective(集体的) intelligence greater than you would expect from its individual parts.

“What kind of rubbish are you?” This question might normally cause anger, but in Shanghai it has become a special “greeting” among people over the past week. On July 1st, the city introduced strict trash-sorting regulations(条例)that are required to follow and expected to be used as a model for our country. Residents must divide their waste into four separate categories and toss (投放) it into specific public dustbins. They must do so at specified times, when monitors are present to ensure correct trash-tossing and to ask the nature of one’s rubbish. Individuals who fail to follow the regulations face the possibility of fines and worse. They could be punished with fines of up to 200 yuan ($ 29).For those who repeat to go against them, the government can add black marks to their credit records, making it harder for them to get bank loans or even buy train tickets.
Shanghai government is responding to an obvious environmental problem. It generates 9 million tons of garbage a year, more than London’s annual output, which is rising quickly. But like other cities in China, it lacks a recycling system. Instead, it has relied on trash pickers to sift(筛选)through the waste, picking out whatever can be reused. This has limits. As people get wealthier, fewer of them want to do such dirty work. The waste, meanwhile, just keeps piling up.
Many residents appear to support the idea of recycling in general but are annoyed by the details. Rubbish must be divided according to whether it is food, recyclable, dry or harmful, the distinctions among which can be confusing, though there are apps to help work it out. Some have complained about the rules concerning food waste. They must put it straight in the required public bins, forcing them to tear open plastic bags and toss it by hand. What they complain most is the short periods for dropping trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening. Along with the monitors at the bins, this means that people go at around the same time and can keep an eye on what is being thrown out;no one wants to look bad.
语篇解读 这是一篇说明文, 文章主要说明了7月1日上海市出台的垃圾分类规定, 以及居民对此规定的态度。

Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increase your speed. Try some of your own tricks now. Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.
Scull and be aware

A Special Appointment
Years ago I moved to Woodland Hills to take a job in a small hospital’s emergency department. No one wanted to work on Christmas Eve, so the shift(轮班) went to me. I kissed my family goodbye and went off to spend the night in the hospital. It was a thankless job.
At 9 pm, the ambulance brought in a man in his 60s who was having a heart attack. His face was pale, and he was frightened. The whole night I did my best to save his life. Before I left in the morning to spend Christmas with my family, I stopped by to see how he was doing. It was still tough, but he had survived the night and was sleeping.
The following year I got Christmas Eve duty again. At 9 pm sharp, the ward clerk told me there was a couple who wanted to speak with me. When I approached them, the man introduced himself as Mr Lee and said, “You probably don’t remember me, but last Christmas Eve you saved my life. Thank you for the year you gave me. ” He and his wife hugged me, handed me a small gift, and left.
The following year a new doctor had joined the group, but I wanted to see if Mr and Mrs Lee would return. This time, I volunteered for the shift. I kept an eye on the door. Once again, at exactly 9 pm, the Lees appeared, carrying a warmly wrapped bundle. It was their new grandchild.
Mr Lee, his family and I spent 13 Christmas Eves together. In the later years the staff all knew about the story and would work to give me time with him in the break room, where we spent a half-hour each Christmas Eve.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Last year I saw Mrs Lee alone in the hospital with a gift for me.

I carefully opened the package and found a crystal(水晶)bell inside with the word “Friendship” engraved(雕刻) on it.

W:May I help you, sir?Come in and have a look.
M:OK. I’d like to look at some suits. I’ll be attending a big conference this coming week.
W:All right. This way, please. What size do you wear?
M:I was wearing size 40 just a few months ago, but I’ve gained some weight recently, so I think I need a size 42. I’d especially like something in grey.
W:How about this one?
M:It feels quite nice. But I’d like it better if it were a bit darker. This seems too light for winter.
W:All right. Let me show you something darker then. How about this one?
M:The material is quite nice, but the jacket seems a little tight in the collar. The color seems a little light. Don’t you have anything in darker grey?
W:How about something in a darker color in another material?

M:Honey, what are you doing with your nose in the newspaper all the afternoon? Is it really that interesting?
W:I’m not interested in the newspaper, but the ads in it. The apartment ads.
M:What?Apartment?
W:Don’t you think we should get a larger apartment?
M:What do you mean? This apartment is fine. It’s big enough for us.
W:It’s obvious that this apartment is too small. We don’t even have a dining room. We’ve lived here since we were married. It’s time we moved.
M:I’d rather stay here. I love this old place. Besides, we don’t need all that extra room.
W:Yes, we do. We need a larger apartment with an extra bedroom. Then it’ll be more comfortable for our baby.
M:Our baby?Wait a minute. Can you say that again? Are we having a baby?
W:Yeah, we are going to have a baby in eight months. It’s true. I’ve been waiting for the right moment to surprise you with the news.
M:Oh, my heavens. This is a huge surprise! Why didn’t you tell me earlier?I can hardly believe it. But where will we get enough money to move to a larger apartment?
W:Don’t worry. We can afford a more expensive apartment. You got a raise last month and my salary certainly helps.
M:Well, yes, good point. I guess we should look at a few apartments.
Text 10
W:We all like our parents, because they give us too much love and care. Now I’d like to talk about my dear dad. My dad is a “Mr Mom”.He was 50 years old when I was born. I didn’t know why he was at home instead of mom, but I considered myself very lucky because I was the only one of my friends who had dad around. Dad did so many things for me during my elementary school years. He convinced the school bus driver to pick me up at our house instead of the usual bus stop two blocks away. He always had my lunch ready for me when I came home. As I got a little older and tried to gain my independence, I wanted to move away from those “childish” signs of his love, but he wouldn’t give up. In high school I was no longer able to go home for lunch, so I began taking my own. Dad would get up a little earlier and prepare it for me. However, when I left home for college, I missed my dad every day after school. At that time I called him a lot. It didn’t matter what he said;I just wanted to hear his voice.

Last year I saw Mrs Lee alone in the hospital with a gift for me. Mrs Lee looked pale. She told me Mr Lee died from another heart attack two days ago. But he had never forgotten our appointment. He prepared the last gift days ago. They lived with a grateful heart and had a meaningful life for as long as 13 years. The appointment is a reminder of the fortune they got from me and the God.
I carefully opened the package and found a crystal(水晶) bell inside with the word “Friendship” engraved(雕刻) on it. Now, my family, my friends and I ring that bell on every Christmas Eve at exactly 9 pm and offer our best wishes to the man who we won’t forget. The bell always reminds us of being helpful to others and thankful to people who have helped us.
