必修三 Unit4 Astronomy the science of the stars (B)
阅读理解
A
Astronomy(天文学) is the oldest science known to man. Thousands of years ago man looked at the stars and wondered about heavens(天堂). But the six planets that he could see with his eyes alone limited man.
The Greeks studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, color, and brightness of a star. They could see its place in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help themselves study the heavens.
Each new tool added to the field of astronomy helped man reach out into space. Until there were telescopes(望远镜), man did not know much about the moon. He did not know that the planet called Saturn(土星) had rings around it. His sight was so limited that he could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s, people thought there were only six planets. Pluto(冥王星), the last of the nine planets to be discovered was seen until 1930.
Before the spectroscope(分光镜), man didn’t know what kind of gas was in the sun or other stars, without radio telescopes(射电望远镜), we did not know that radio noise came from far in space.
Today, astronomy is a growing science. We have learned more in the past fifty years than in the whole history of astronomy.
1. Thousands of years ago, what did the man watch with his eyes?
A. The moon B. The stars C. The universe D. All the planets
2. When the Greeks watched the stars, they could .
A. know what the stars were made of
B. not see their places in the sky
C. help themselves study the heavens
D. watch the stars move as the seasons changed
3. Man knew very little about the moon until there were .
A. telescopes B. spectroscopes C. radio telescopes D. spaceships
4. People didn’t know about Pluto until ________.

Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids(小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.
Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids(流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.
Buy $50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we’ll have a way to change its course.
Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn’t be cheap.
Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare — but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. “If we don’t take care of these big asteroids, they’ll take care of us,” says one scientist. “It’s that simple.”
The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “The world has less to fear from doomsday(毁灭性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.
5. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?
A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition.
B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.
C. These are more asteroids than meteoroids.
D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.
6. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?
A. It is unlikely but the danger exists.
B. Such a collision might occur once every 25 years.
C. Collision of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.
D. It’s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.
7. What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the course of asteroids?
A. It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.
B. It may create more problems than it might solve.
C. It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.
D. Further research should be done before it is proved applicable.
8. We can conclude from the passage that .
A. while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world
B. asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future
C. the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime
D. workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth

七选五
Countries around the globe are spending billions of dollars and lots of time on various space missions. 9 Instead, we should feed the world’s poor and find immediate solutions to other problems. However, others feel this is a shallow view which fails to realize how exploring space helps us.
10 It has directly resulted in the many satellites that now orbit Earth. A number of the satellites record data on land and weather patterns. 11 After careful analysis, the scientists can provide useful recommendations and advice for farmers.
Space exploration has already promoted technological improvements that benefit us all. High-end products around the world are made to a higher standard. Today space technologies are widely used in all kinds of industries. 12
Sending astronauts into space has helped people think about the world’s problems and find ways to solve them. Our planet’s resources are limited. In order to provide for the rapidly increasing population, scientists are trying to find other planets that could one day be our new home. 13 In the future, humans may live on both planets.
Exploring space benefits us so much. So it should continue so as to provide new and better solutions to people’s short-term and long-term problems.
A. Then the data is transmitted to scientists on Earth.
B. Exploring space brings many difficulties to the world.
C. Some people think we should realize how exploring space helps us.
D. The greatest attention at present is on Mars because it is closer to Earth.
E. Some people argue we should stop wasting time and money exploring space.
F. Exploring space has already made a difference in the fight against world hunger.
G. GPS, memory foam pillows, smartphone cameras and so on are changing our lives.

What is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water, which is fundamental 30 the development of life, appeared and stayed on its surface. The continued 31 (present) of allowed the earth to dissolve 32 (harm) gases into the oceans and this produced a chain reaction which made it possible for life 33 (develop).
Many millions of years later, the arrival of small plants encouraged the development of early shellfish 34 all sorts of fish. Then, with the first green plants 35 (appear) on land, land animals appeared and dinosaurs developed and existed on the earth for millions of years. Then dinosaurs’ sudden disappearance made the rise of mammals possible on the earth. They were different from all life forms 36 ever existed in the past because they produced young baby animals. 37 (final) some small clever animals with hands and legs appeared and spread all over the earth. A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom.
One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.
Neighbours called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire.
Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, then disappeared into the night.
An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.
A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing(教养) on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child’s advantage to live with them.
Finally, the town's richest resident rose and said, “I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.”
Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor.
“Does anyone else want to speak?” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.
Paragraph 1:
When he got to the front of the hall, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms.

Paragraph 2:
When asked about her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly.
