In Canada you can find dogs, cats, horses and so on, in almost every family. These are their pets. People love these pets and have them as their good friends. Before they keep them in their houses, they take them to animal hospitals to give them injections so that they won’t have diseases. They have special animal food stores, though they can get animal food in almost every kind of store. Some people spend around two hundred Canadian dollars a month on animal food. When you visit people’s houses, they would be very glad to show you their pets and they are very proud of them. You will also find that almost every family has a bird feeder in the garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and nobody is allowed to kill any animal in Canada. They have a law against killing wild animals. If you killed an animal, you would be punished. If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would be very sad about it.
People in Canada have many reasons to like pets. One of them might be: their family ties are not as close as ours. When children grow up, they leave their parents and start their own life. New Zealand, which is a beautiful beach country, draws many people looking for a new life. Its cities are considered as some of the best places to live in throughout the world, and with a population of about 4.5 million there remains plenty of untouched land to explore and enjoy.
The big draws for modern-day visitors are the country’s beautiful scenery and natural wonders. Sailing, surfing, hiking, camping and any other outdoor activities can be done in New Zealand. With an increasing number of visitors arriving every year, environmentalists and the government are concerned about protecting nature.
Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, with a population of about 1.5 million. Known as the City of Sails, it sits on the narrow land between the Waitemata Harbour and Manukau Harbour. The city’s suburbs stretch for many miles along the coast. Its most popular places to live are Westmere, Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Ellerslie and Meadow bank. These are the areas seeing the highest housing prices in the country.
At the south of the North Island sits Wellington, the capital and diplomatic centre of the country, built in the hills above the Cook Strait that separates the North Island from the South Island. It has the country’s best public transport, Metlink, and considers itself the coolest city in New Zealand.
“No matter where we live, beach culture has always been a big part of our culture,” said Shane Mason. “It’s pretty common to leave town during the summer and spend Christmas and New Years at the beach.” “New Zealand is a good place to visit but a great place to live,” said Mason, who now lives in Berlin. “I’ve discovered there is no place like home.”

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean lies the tiny island nation of Tuvalu, the fourth smallest country in the world. This group of four islands and five atolls(islands made from coral) is famous for its sandy beaches and turquoise(蓝绿色的) waters and has long been a popular tourist destination for nearby New Zealanders. However, the nation of Tuvalu is at risk of soon no longer existing; not because of war or political change, but because it will be covered by the rising ocean.
Tuvalu is experiencing the harmful effects of global warming. As global temperatures rise, so does the ocean temperature. Due to the scientific law of “thermal expansion”, when water heats it get bigger. 9 Most experts claim that the effects of climate change will make Tuvalu uninhabitable within the next 50 years. Problems are already emerging. As sea levels rise, ocean water containing high levels of salt is travelling further and further inland destroying the little amount of soil Tuvaluans have to grow crops.
Even before Tuvaluans began to suffer from the effects of climate change, lift on Tuvalu was tough. 10 Most of the land on an atoll is rock-hard and any soil that exists on it is usually thin and poor for growing crops. The nation has always had to import food apart from fish.
What’s more serious than Tuvalu’s lack of home-grown food has been its lack of drinking water. 11 Therefore, Tuvaluans depend almost entirely on rainwater for their water needs. Unfortunately, due to a geographical phenomenon known as La Nina, Tuvalu often suffers from long periods of drought. In autumn 2010, after seven months of no rain, the Prime Minister had to declare a state of emergency riot only because of a lack of drinking water, but also because the water left was polluted with cholera(霍乱). 12
Tuvalu’s problems have led some of its 11,000 inhabitants to consider migrating to Australia or New Zealand. 13 They know they’ll have to someday, but for as long as possible, they want to remain and make the world aware of what is happening to their homeland due to climate change.
A. It was a desperate situation and, but for emergency shipments from New Zealand and Australia, many Tuvaluans would have died.
B. This is largely due to the geological makeup of atolls.
C. Unlike normal islands, atolls have no rivers or streams, which means that most of Tuvalu has no groundwater to use for drinking.
D. Tuvalu’s representatives demanded that nations should take a more responsible role in reducing gas emissions.
E. Therefore, sea levels are rising and for low-lying Tuvalu, this spells disaster.
F. However, they are not willing to abandon the land of their forefathers so easily.
G. And as a member of the United Nations, he is doing just that.

I am a frequent interstate traveler. I was born in Ontario, Canada and thus all my family except my husband and children live there. So three times a year I make a trip north from Georgia to visit. I often travel by myself as my children are all grown and my husband is working.
Two years ago I went up in the spring and brought one of my sisters south for a month to take away the pains of a long winter. This year I did the same. It is interesting that many of my friends have said “Aren’t you scared?” or “What if you break down?”. I always respond that I have a lot of faith in the Lord and in myself. My husband is a mechanic and each year gives my 230,000+ miles car a good checkup. He will come to me if I need help.
Here is how my miracle happened on Interstate 85 North in South Carolina. Heading north to take my sweet sister home to Canada, we were chatting away and I was driving 70 miles per hour in the third lane over. Yes, the fastest lane. All of a sudden, I started to lose power. I said anxiously I was losing power and got over to the next and then the right lane, I was driving at about 40 miles per hour when I got to the first exit. I finally arrived at a Citgo station and pulled off the road.
I immediately called my husband and he didn’t answer. I was thinking he never answered his phone. I called 2 more times saying please answer the phone to myself. I was getting pretty upset thinking what I should do. I got out of the car and looked under it and smelled gas. Then I checked the oil and water. Luckily, both were good! My sister went into the gas station and said to the clerk if he knew anyone who could help us and then said pray for us as she made her way to the rest room.
Paragraph 1:
I was standing by my car when a man with broken English suddenly appeared.

Paragraph 2:
I thanked my rescuer and asked him if I could pay him for his help.
