Who would have thought that potato fries could unite an entire country? Well, that seems to be the case in Belgium where there is currently a movement to have Belgian potato fries officially recognized as cultural heritage.
The fries are served in a paper cone(圆锥体) from a “fritkot”, which is a shack(小屋) or a food truck. Across Belgium, there are at least 5, 000 fritkots which is 10 times more common than McDonald's restaurants in the United States.
The movement for the fries to be declared official cultural heritage was started by UNAFRI, also known as the national association of fritkot owners. They claim that their establishments represent Belgium very well. “A cone of potato chips is Belgium in miniature(微模型). What's amazing is that this way of thinking is the same, in spite of differences among communities and regions,” added spokesman Bernard Lefevre.
Tourists can even be seen to line up with locals in Brussels to buy a cone of fries from well-known fritkots such as Frit Flagey and Maison Antoine. “Before I came here, the only thing I knew about Belgium was that they liked their fries, said Rachael Webb, a tourist from Ottowa, Canada.
In order to be recognized by UNESCO, it has to be formally supported by the Belgian government of culture.
As of right now, UNESCO has a list of 314 items of 揷ultural heritage that they say is worthy enough to be preserved. Items on the list include Turkish coffee and the old native singing of the Central African Republic.
Potatoes reached Belgium in the 16th century, but it wasn't until the 19th century that they were cut up into fries and sold as a meal.
It is considered that potato fries could unite Belgium because they________.
represent Belgian history B. are enjoyed by many Belgians
C. make a huge profit each year D. are recognized by foreigners
22. The movement to have potato fries declared cultural heritage was started by________.
A. the Belgian government B. many Belgian communities

B. is very welcome among Canadians
C. is a famous restaurant in Belgium
D. is a big international company
24. It can be inferred from the passage that foods and drinks________.
A. are thought to be a symbol of national achievement
B. are regarded as a culture by many people
C. express ideas of a particular period
D. record the traditions of a region

The Terracotta Army is one of the must-visit attractions for all travellers to China. The attraction is located in Xi抋n, in west China抯 Shanxi Province.
What抯 special?
The Terracotta Army is the buried army of Qin Shi Huang, an ancient Chinese emperor. These ancient sculptures were built and buried over two thousand years ago near the city of Xi’an. They were discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well looking for underground water. Over eight thousand terracotta warriors and horses have been uncovered since then. Each warrior is made of clay (黏土). They are around two meters tall. The sculptures are so detailed that it is possible to guess the age, rank and personality of each one. None of the soldiers are the same.
The best time to visit
The Terracotta Army is an indoor attraction, which is not likely to be affected by weather, so it can be visited all year round.
As the museum is one of the must-visit attractions in China, it is crowded most of the time. We advise our customers to avoid the following periods when the museum is particularly crowded:
National Day Holiday (October 1 -7), when it is fully packed.
Labour Day Holiday
Weather in winter is dry, cold and the least comfortable, and it抯 also the worst season for air quality, but it抯 also low season.
Travel style: private, group or independent?
A private tour means a lot of flexibility (灵活性), and you will be well taken care of by a private guide and a driver. The museum is crowded most of the time, but our guides know how to escape the crowds, and help you to enjoy more in the museum. See our 3-Day Terracotta Warriors Private Tour.
Going with a group you won抰 get lost, but it lacks flexibility and personal service.
Travelling on your own, you may meet a lot of trouble, such as wasting time on finding a taxi or public bus to the attraction, lining up for tickets, reading maps, making sense of Chinese signs, etc.
What can we know about the Terracotta Army?
The warriors are made of clay.
The warriors are of the same age.
It is closed on rainy days.
It is usually displayed outdoors.
Which is the best time to avoid crowds?
A.Summer holidays. B. National Day Holiday.
C. Labour Day Holiday. D. Clear winter days.
27. If you want to travel with least trouble, which should you choose?
A. A private tour. B. A tour group.
C. Travelling on your own. D. A family tour.

The city of Angkor was the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th centuries. It was founded on political and religious ideas adapted from India, and the temples of Angkor were intended as a place of worship (敬拜) for the king.
Angkor Wat was built by King Suryavarman Ⅱ in the 12th century as a vast funerary (丧葬的) temple that would hold his remains, suggesting his permanent identity with Vishnu.
During its six centuries as capital, Angkor went through many changes in architectural styles and in religion. The city of Angkor changed its god from the Hindu god Shiva to the Hindu god Vishnu, and finally to the Mahayana Buddhist goddess Avalokitesvara.
By the late 13th century, the once uncontrolled pace of Angkor's architectural pursuits (追求) had begun to die down, and a more limited type of religion was on the rise under the growing influence of Theravada Buddhism.
At the same time, Angkor and the Khmer Empire were increasingly threatened and attacked by invading armies. By the 16th century, the golden age of Angkor was over and many of the great temples began to gradually disappear into the jungle.
From the 15th to 19th centuries, Theravada Buddhist monks cared for Angkor Wat, and it is thanks to them that the temple remains mostly safe and sound. Angkor Wat is one of the most important pilgrimage (朝圣) sites in Southeastern Asia. Angkor Wat is the best preserved example of Khmer architecture in Cambodia and is so grand in design that some rank it among the Seven Wonders of the World. It appears on the Cambodian national flag, a very rare example of a flag including an image of a building.
28. Angkor Wat was first built to________.
A. worship the gods B. act as a pilgrimage site
C. serve as the royal palace D. hold the remains of a king
Vishnu was the name of________.
an Indian god
a temple in Cambodia
a king of the Khmer Empire
D. a monk in ancient Cambodia
What can we infer from the last paragraph?
Angkor Wat is widely accepted as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Theravada Buddhist monks had fought against the outside invaders.
Angkor Wat has become a symbol of Cambodia.
Angkor Wat is not so important as it used to be.

And how about keeping relationships while in transit? __33__; some send letters and postcards, or even photos; others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they're still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. __34__
Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging? Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another 揾ome waiting to be found. __35__, we can make the place we stay 揾ome.
Hostels provide a clean and safe place to stay while you are traveling the world.
others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely.
Backpackers in youth hostels may become good friends, even closer than siblings (兄弟姐妹).
