Some
people
get
more
unwilling
to
take
risks
as
the
years
go
by.
Not
Gail
MacCallum,
who
at
age
40
quit
a
secure
job
and
left
the
city
she
had
enjoyed
her
whole
adult
life
to
step
into
the
unknown.
MacCallum
spent
her
formative
years
in
a
farmhouse
without
electricity
and
enjoyed
the
freedom
of
the
natural
world.
During
her
adult
life,
she
moved
through
several
jobs
before
finding
her
calling
in
book
publishing
and
then
magazines.
One
day
she
and
her
partner
Ian
Connellan
were
on
a
holiday
on
Hobart,
enjoying
the
chance
to
get
close
to
wildlife,
when
they
ran
into
some
friends-
of-friends,
who
asked
them
to
dinner.
The
next
day,
recalls
MacCallum,
“They
said,
‘We
think
you
should
buy
our
house.’”
With
no
intention
of
uprooting
their
lives
she
and
Connellan
thought
this
was
“entirely
ridiculous",
yet
they
got
really
excited
talking
about
the
possibilities
such
a
move
might
present.
“At
last,”
we
said,
“Let's
give
it
a
go.”
They
resigned
from
their
jobs
and
moved
to
Hobart.
Both
of
them
are
brave
travelers
who
had
spent
time
with
scientists
working
in
various
remote
spots
around
the
world.
They
wondered
if
they
could
make
a
living
by
helping
others
to
experience
those
unique
places
for
themselves.
Then
came
the
new
company
Curious
Traveler.
“It
works
brilliantly.
Scientists
get
helpers
and
funding.
Guests
get
to
see
what
scientists
do
and
how
the
world
is
changing
because
of
it.
They
leave,
excited
and
inspired,”
MacCallum
says.
In
two-and-a-half
years,
the
pair
still
have
to
replenish
their
incomes
with
some
writing
and
editing,
but
the
business
is
growing
and
within
five
years
they
hope
to
be
helping
fund
half
a
dozen
research
projects.
It
is
a
big
task.
“Some
days
we
think
it
would
be
great
to
turn
it
off,”
MacCallum
says,
“but
when
we
see
the
wonder
on
the
face
of
a
person
who
is
experiencing
somewhere
like
the
Galapagos
for
the
first
time,
we
know
we
are
living
a
wonderful
life.”

Their
childhood
experiences
with
nature.

boredom
with
their
then
jobs.
D.

desire
to
protect
the
wildlife.
5.

does
MacCallum
and
Connellan's
company
do?

promotes
tourism
in

to
explore
the
world.

Professor
Ashok
Goel
of
Georgia
Tech
developed
an
artificially
intelligent
teaching
robot,
Knowledge-
Based
Artificial
Intelligence,
to
help
handle
the
enormous
number
of
student
questions
in
the
online
class.
This
online
course
is
a
core
requirement
of
Georgia
Tech's
online
Master
of
Science
in
Computer
Science
program.
Professor
Goel
already
had
eight
teaching
assistants,
but
that
wasn't
enough
to
deal
with
the
overwhelming
number
of
daily
questions
from
students.
Many
students
drop
out
of
online
courses
because
of
the
lack
of
teaching
support.
When
students
feel
isolated
or
confused
and
reach
out
with
questions
that
go
unanswered,
their
motivation
to
continue
begins
to
taper
off.
Professor
Goel
decided
to
do
something
to
remedy
this
situation
and
his
solution
was
to
create
a
virtual
assistant
named
Jill
Watson,
which
is
based
on
the
IBM
Watson
platform.
Goel
and
his
team
developed
several
versions
of
Jill
Watson
before
releasing
her
to
the
online
forums.
At
first,
the
virtual
assistant
wasn't
too
great.
But
Goel
and
his
team
sourced
the
online
discussion
forum
to
find
all
the
40,
000
questions
that
had
ever
been
asked
since
the
class
was
launched.
Then
they
began
to
feed
Jill
with
the
questions
and
answers.
After
some
adjustments
and
sufficient
time,
Jill
was
able
to
answer
the
students'
questions
correctly
97%
of
the
time.
The
virtual
assistant
became
so
advanced
and
realistic
that
the
students
didn’t
know
she
was
a
computer.
The
students,
who
were
studying
artificial
intelligence,
were
interacting
with
the
virtual
assistant
and
couldn't
tell
it
apart
from
a
real
human
being.
Goel
didn’t
inform
them
about
Jill's
true
identity
until
April
26.
The
students
were
actually
very
positive
about
the
experience.
The
goal
of
Professor
Goel’s
virtual
assistant
next
year
is
to
take
over
answering
40%
of
all
the
questions
posed
by
students
on
the
online
forum.
The
name
Jill
Watson
will,
of
course,
change
to
something
else
next
semester.
Professor
Goel
has
a
much
rosier
outlook
on
the
future
of
artificial
intelligence
than,
say,
Elon
Musk,
Stephen
Hawking,
Bill
Gates
or
Steve
Wozniak.
8.

That
people
often
experience
trouble
sleeping
in
a
different
bed
in
unfamiliar
surroundings
is
a
phenomenon
known
as
the
“first-night”
effect.
If
a
person
stays
in
the
same
room
the
following
night
they
tend
to
sleep
more
soundly.
Yuka
Sasaki
and
her
colleagues
at
Brown
University
set
out
to
investigate
the
origins
of
this
effect.
Dr.
Sasaki
knew
the
“first-
night"
effect
probably
has
something
to
do
with
how
humans
evolved.
The
puzzle
was
what
benefit
would
be
gained
from
it
when
performance
might
be
affected
the
following
day.
She
also
knew
from
previous
work
conducted
on
birds
and
dolphins
that
these
animals
put
half
of
their
brains
to
sleep
at
a
time
so
that
they
can
rest
while
remaining
alert
enough
to
avoid
predators(捕食者)
This
led
her
to
wonder
if
people
might
be
doing
the
same
thing.
To
take
a
closer
look,
her
team
studied
35
healthy
people
as
they
slept
in
the
unfamiliar
environment
of
the
university
s
Department
of
Psychological
Sciences.
The
participants
each
slept
in
the
department
for
two
nights
and
were
carefully
monitored
with
techniques
that
looked
at
the
activity
of
their
brains.
Dr.
Sasaki
found,
as
expected,
the
participants
slept
less
well
on
their
first
night
than
they
did
on
their
second,
taking
more
than
twice
as
long
to
fall
asleep
and
sleeping
less
overall.
During
deep
sleep,
the
participants'
brains
behaved
in
a
similar
manner
seen
in
birds
and
dolphins.
On
the
first
night
only,
the
left
hemispheres(半球)
of
their
brains
did
not
sleep
nearly
as
deeply
as
their
right
hemispheres
did.
Curious
if
the
left
hemispheres
were
indeed
remaining
awake
to
process
information
detected
in
the
surrounding
environment,
Dr.
Sasaki
re-ran
the
experiment
while
presenting
the
sleeping
participants
with
a
mix
of
regularly
timed
beeps(蜂鸣声)
of
the
same
tone
and
irregular
beeps
of
a
different
tone
during
the
night.
She
worked
out
that,
if
the
left
hemisphere
was
staying
alert
in
a
strange
environment,
then
it
would
react
to
the
irregular
beeps
by
stirring
people
from
sleep
and
would
ignore
the
regularly
timed
ones.
This
is
precisely
what
she
found.
12.
What
did
Dr.
Yuka
Sasaki
find
puzzling
about
the
“first-night"
effect?
A.
To
what
extent
it
can
trouble
people.
B.
Why
it
might
be
related
to
evolution.
C.
What
measures
should
be
taken
to
solve
it.
D.
In
what
way
it
can
be
beneficial.
13.
What
do
we
learn
about
the
research
from
Paragraph
3?
A.
The
brain
activity
of
participants'
sleeping
was
monitored
in
a
new
environment.
B.
The
participants
were
from
the
Department
of
Psychological
Sciences.
C.
The
differences
between
the
two
sides
of
participants'
brains
were
studied.
D.
The
findings
about
birds
and
dolphins
were
tested
on
human
subjects.
14.
Why
did
Dr.
Yuka
Sasaki
re-run
the
experiment?
A.
She
wanted
to
know
if
humans
do
the
same
as
birds
and
dolphins.
B.
The
previous
experiment
failed
her
expectation.
C.
She
wondered
if
human's
left
hemispheres
stayed
alert
on
the
first
night.
D.
The
"first-night"
effect
phenomenon
was
too
tough
for
her
to
analyze.
15.
Which
about
the
"first-night”
effect
can
be
concluded
from
the
text?
A.
It
can
be
got
rid
of.
B.
It
contributes
to
sleepers'
keeping
guard.
C.
It
can
be
improved.
D.
It
originates
from
sleeping
patterns.

again
in
2018,philosophy
professor
and
writer
Ron
Srigley
offered
extra
credit
to
those
who
would
give
him
custody
of
their
phones
for
nine
days
and
write
about
the
experience.
“What
they
wrote
was
remarkable,
and
remarkably
consistent,"
Srigley
wrote.
At
first,
all
the
students
felt
disoriented
and
frustrated.
____16____
They
paid
more
attention
to
the
people
around
them.
For
one
thing,
they
observed,
for
the
first
time,
how
much
other
people
were
using
their
phones,
for
example
in
the
middle
of
a
face-
to-
face
conversation.
“____17____,
but
yet
again,
I
find
myself
guilty
of
this
sometimes
because
it
is
the
norm,"
one
student
wrote.
Another
noted
that
as
she
walked
by
other
people,
they
tended
to
pull
out
their
phones
“right
before
I
could
gain
eye
contact
with
them".
They
had
better
face-to-face
conversations
with
family.
Two
of
the
students
were
accustomed
to
using
their
phones
to
constantly
message
with
their
family
members
throughout
the
day,
and
they
felt
deprived
of
this
contact.
But
when
the
students
spent
in-person
time
with
their
parents,
____18____
They
were
more
afraid.
Some
of
the
students
reported
that
they
were
fearful
of
having
no
phones,
wondering
what
they
would
do
if
they
were
kidnapped
or
attacked
or
had
to
call
an
ambulance
for
some
reason.
Srigley
noted,
“What’s
revealing
is
that
these
students
perceived
the
world
to
be
a
very
dangerous
place.
____19____.
The
city
in
which
these
students
lived
has
one
of
the
lowest
crime
rates
in
the
world
and
almost
no
violent
crime
of
any
kind,
yet
they
experienced
a
pervasive,
undefined
fear.”
“Without
cellphones,
life
would
be
simple
and
real,
____20____.
”That's
probably
truer
for
all
of
us
than
we
would
like
to
admit.
A.
This
action
is
very
rude
and
unacceptable
B.
their

C.
but
we
got
things
done
quicker
without

D.

were
seen
as
necessary
to
combat
that

E.
but
we
may
not
be

to
cope
with
the

The
following
stories
are
not
mine,
but
my
father's.
I
was
too
small
to
really
do
anything
at
the
time.
But
I
stood
to
witness
them.
I
grew
up
thinking
all
of
the
world
was
like
my
father.
I
think
that
all
my
life
has
been
full
of
both
kindness
and
cruelty.
But
the
kindness
affected
me
deeper
than
anything
else.
My
father
says
that
this
may
go
on
the
internet,
but
asks
that
it
should
not
be
published
in
paper
form
as
these
are
very
personal
to
him.
The
first
act
of
kindness
that
I
can
remember
was
when
I
was
very
little,
I
was
six
years
old,
my
family
and
I
had
been
out
camping.
Mom,
Dad
and
sisters
were
ready
to
go
home.
As
we
put
everything
in
the
truck
to
go
home,
Dad
told
us
to
move
the
fire
extinguisher
from
the
back
of
the
truck
to
under
the
driver's
seat
and
told
us
a
story
of
how
a
friend
had
been
trapped
in
a
burning
car,
and
how
since
then
it
was
always
important
for
him
to
have
an
extinguisher
ready.
Mom
always
rolled
her
eyes—
it
was
the
one
hundred-thousandth
time
he
had
told
the
story.
On
our
way
home
from
the
lake
where
we
camped,
we
took
a
short
cut,
which
was
not
a
short
cut
at
all.
It
was
getting
late
and
about
to
rain.
Mom
started
to
get
nervous.
I
didn't
realize
everyone
had
gone
quiet.
I
was
enjoying
looking
at
the
clouds
as
we
turned
a
long
corner.
My
dad
turned
into
the
left
lane,
stopped
the
truck
and
ran
out.
Mom
told
him
to
come
back.
It
was
then
that
I
looked
out
of
the
windshield
and
saw
a
little
red
car
on
the
side
of
the
road.
Smoke
was
coming
out
of
the
hood.
Before
my
father
reached
the
driver
s
side
door,
it
burst
into
flames.

续写词数应为150左右;

Some
people
get
more
unwilling
to
take
risks
as
the
years
go
by.
Not
Gail
MacCallum,
who
at
age
40
quit
a
secure
job
and
left
the
city
she
had
enjoyed
her
whole
adult
life
to
step
into
the
unknown.
MacCallum
spent
her
formative
years
in
a
farmhouse
without
electricity
and
enjoyed
the
freedom
of
the
natural
world.
During
her
adult
life,
she
moved
through
several
jobs
before
finding
her
calling
in
book
publishing
and
then
magazines.
One
day
she
and
her
partner
Ian
Connellan
were
on
a
holiday
on
Hobart,
enjoying
the
chance
to
get
close
to
wildlife,
when
they
ran
into
some
friends-
of-friends,
who
asked
them
to
dinner.
The
next
day,
recalls
MacCallum,
“They
said,
‘We
think
you
should
buy
our
house.’”
With
no
intention
of
uprooting
their
lives
she
and
Connellan
thought
this
was
“entirely
ridiculous",
yet
they
got
really
excited
talking
about
the
possibilities
such
a
move
might
present.
“At
last,”
we
said,
“Let's

They
resigned
from
their

and
moved
to
Hobart.
Both
of
them
are
brave
travelers
who
had
spent

with
scientists
working
in
various
remote

around
the

They
wondered
if
they

Then
came
the

see
what
scientists
do
and
how
the
world
is
changing
because
of
it.
They
leave,
excited
and
inspired,”
MacCallum
says.
In
two-and-a-half
years,
the
pair
still
have
to
replenish
their
incomes
with
some
writing

but
the
business
is
growing
and
within
five
years
they
hope
to

half
a
dozen

It
is
a
big
task.
“Some
days
we
think
it
would
be
great
to
turn
it
off,”
MacCallum
says,
“but
when

Professor
Ashok
Goel
of
Georgia
Tech
developed
an
artificially
intelligent
teaching
robot,
Knowledge-
Based
Artificial
Intelligence,
to
help
handle
the
enormous
number
of
student
questions
in
the
online
class.
This
online
course
is
a
core
requirement
of
Georgia
Tech's
online
Master
of
Science
in
Computer
Science
program.
Professor
Goel
already
had
eight
teaching
assistants,
but
that
wasn't
enough
to
deal
with
the
overwhelming
number
of
daily
questions
from
students.
Many
students
drop
out
of
online
courses
because
of
the
lack
of
teaching
support.
When
students
feel
isolated
or
confused
and
reach
out
with
questions
that
go
unanswered,
their
motivation
to
continue
begins
to
taper
off.
Professor
Goel
decided
to
do
something
to
remedy
this
situation
and
his
solution
was
to
create
a
virtual
assistant
named
Jill
Watson,
which
is
based
on
the
IBM
Watson
platform.
Goel
and
his
team
developed
several
versions
of
Jill
Watson
before
releasing
her
to
the
online
forums.
At
first,
the
virtual
assistant
wasn't
too
great.
But
Goel
and
his
team
sourced
the
online
discussion
forum
to
find
all
the
40,
000
questions
that
had
ever
been
asked
since
the
class
was
launched.
Then
they
began
to
feed
Jill
with
the
questions
and
answers.
After
some
adjustments
and
sufficient
time,
Jill
was
able
to
answer
the
students'
questions
correctly
97%
of
the
time.
The
virtual
assistant
became
so
advanced
and
realistic
that
the
students
didn’t
know
she
was
a
computer.
The
students,
who
were
studying
artificial
intelligence,
were
interacting
with
the
virtual
assistant
and
couldn't
tell
it
apart
from
a
real
human
being.
Goel
didn’t
inform
them
about
Jill's
true
identity
until
April
26.
The
students
were
actually
very
positive
about
the
experience.
The
goal
of
Professor
Goel’s
virtual
assistant
next
year
is
to
take
over
answering
40%
of
all
the
questions
posed
by
students
on
the
online
forum.
The
name
Jill
Watson
will,
of
course,
change
to
something
else
next
semester.
Professor
Goel
has
a
much
rosier
outlook
on
the
future
of
artificial
intelligence
than,
say,
Elon
Musk,
Stephen
Hawking,
Bill
Gates
or
Steve
Wozniak.

D
That
people
often
experience
trouble
sleeping
in
a
different
bed
in
unfamiliar
surroundings
is
a
phenomenon
known
as
the
“first-night”
effect.
If
a
person
stays
in
the
same
room
the
following
night
they
tend
to
sleep
more
soundly.
Yuka
Sasaki
and
her
colleagues
at
Brown
University
set
out
to
investigate
the
origins
of
this
effect.
Dr.
Sasaki
knew
the
“first-
night"
effect
probably
has
something
to
do
with
how
humans
evolved.
The
puzzle
was
what
benefit
would
be
gained
from
it
when
performance
might
be
affected
the
following
day.
She
also
knew
from
previous
work
conducted
on
birds
and
dolphins
that
these
animals
put
half
of
their
brains
to
sleep
at
a
time
so
that
they
can
rest
while
remaining
alert
enough
to
avoid
predators(捕食者)
This
led
her
to
wonder
if
people
might
be
doing
the
same
thing.
To
take
a
closer
look,
her
team
studied
35
healthy
people
as
they
slept
in
the
unfamiliar
environment
of
the
university
s
Department
of
Psychological
Sciences.
The
participants
each
slept
in
the
department
for
two
nights
and
were
carefully
monitored
with
techniques
that
looked
at
the
activity
of
their
brains.
Dr.
Sasaki
found,
as
expected,
the
participants
slept
less
well
on
their
first
night
than
they
did
on
their
second,
taking
more
than
twice
as
long
to
fall
asleep
and
sleeping
less
overall.
During
deep
sleep,
the
participants'
brains
behaved
in
a
similar
manner
seen
in
birds
and
dolphins.
On
the
first
night
only,
the
left
hemispheres(半球)
of
their
brains
did
not
sleep
nearly
as
deeply
as
their
right
hemispheres
did.
Curious
if
the
left
hemispheres
were
indeed
remaining
awake
to
process
information
detected
in
the
surrounding
environment,
Dr.
Sasaki
re-ran
the
experiment
while
presenting
the
sleeping
participants
with
a
mix
of
regularly
timed
beeps(蜂鸣声)
of
the
same
tone
and
irregular
beeps
of
a
different
tone
during
the
night.
She
worked
out
that,
if
the
left
hemisphere
was
staying
alert
in
a
strange
environment,
then
it
would
react
to
the
irregular
beeps
by
stirring
people
from
sleep
and
would
ignore
the
regularly
timed
ones.
This
is
precisely
what
she
found.
12.
What
did
Dr.
Yuka
Sasaki
find
puzzling
about
the
“first-night"
effect?
A.
To
what
extent
it
can
trouble
people.
B.
Why
it
might
be
related
to
evolution.
C.
What
measures
should
be
taken
to
solve
it.
D.
In
what
way
it
can
be
beneficial.
13.
What
do
we
learn
about
the
research
from
Paragraph
3?
A.
The
brain
activity
of
participants'
sleeping
was
monitored
in
a
new
environment.
B.
The
participants
were
from
the
Department
of
Psychological
Sciences.
C.
The
differences
between
the
two
sides
of
participants'
brains
were
studied.
D.
The
findings
about
birds
and
dolphins
were
tested
on
human
subjects.
14.
Why
did
Dr.
Yuka
Sasaki
re-run
the
experiment?
A.
She
wanted
to
know
if
humans
do
the
same
as
birds
and
dolphins.
B.
The
previous
experiment
failed
her
expectation.
C.
She
wondered
if
human's
left
hemispheres
stayed
alert
on
the
first
night.
D.
The
"first-night"
effect
phenomenon
was
too
tough
for
her
to
analyze.
15.
Which
about
the
"first-night”
effect
can
be
concluded
from
the
text?
A.
It
can
be
got
rid
of.
B.
It
contributes
to
sleepers'
keeping
guard.
C.
It
can
be
improved.
D.
It
originates
from
sleeping
patterns.

【答案】Paragraph
1:
Dad
came
back
to
the
van
and
took
out
his
knife.
Approaching
the
burning
car
bravely,
my
father
struggled
to
cut
the
driver’s
seat
belt
and
pulled
him
back
to
the
van.
Then
Dad
took
out
the
fire
extinguisher
under
his
seat
and
headed
for
the
car
once
more.
Luckily,
the
fire
had
been
brought
under

before
things
got
worse.
What
a
narrow
escape!
The
young
driver
would
have
been
killed
without
my
father’s
kindness
and
bravery.
Luckily,
the
man
was
only
slightly
injured
and
came
to
himself
after
a
while.
Warm-hearted,
my
father
even
volunteered
to
drive
him
to
their
home.
Paragraph

Dad
left
Mom
and
my
older
sister

His
parents
could
not
help
expressing
their
appreciation
for
my
father’s
timely
help,
without
which
their
son
would
never
have
survived
the
terrible
accident.
Since
then,
we
have
never
taken
my
father’s
story
lightly
and
his
kindness
has
been
planted
deeply
in
my
mind.
The
experience
taught
us
not
only
the
importance
of
preparing
for
the
urgent
situation,
but
also
the
significance
of
being
kind.
