We already know the fastest, least expensive way to slow down climate change—use less energy. With a little effort, and not much money, most of us could reduce our energy diets by 25 percent or more—doing the Earth a favor while also helping our wallets.
Not long ago, my wife, PJ, and I tried a new diet—not to lose a little weight but to answer an annoying question about climate change.Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don’t keep reducing emission(排放) of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere.
We decided to try an experiment. For one month we recorded our personal emission of CO2.We wanted to see how much we could cut back, so we went on a strict diet. The average US household produces about 150 pounds of CO2 a day by doing common things like turning on air?conditioning or driving cars. That’s more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average, mostly because Americans drive more and have bigger houses. But how much should we try to reduce?
For an answer, I checked with Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth. In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emission to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping__points,__such as the melting(融化) of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica.“To stay below that point, we need to reduce CO2 emission by 80 percent,”he said.
Good advice, I thought.I’d opened our bedroom windows to let the wind in.We’d gotten so used to keeping our air?conditioning going around the clock.I’d almost forgotten the windows even opened. We should not let this happen again. It’s time for us to change our habits if necessary.
Why did the author and his wife try a new diet?
To take special kinds of food. B. To respond to climate change.
C. To lose weight. D. To improve their health.
22. The underlined words “tipping points” most probably refer to “________”.
A. freezing points B. burning points
C. melting points D. boiling points
23. According to the passage, Tim Flannery ________.
A. made deep cuts in his personal emission of CO2
B. wrote a book about the climate changes
succeeded in reducing CO2 emission by 80 percent
was an author popular among readers
24. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. Saving Energy Starts at Home
B. Changing Our Habits Begins at Work
C. Changing Climate Sounds Reasonable
D. Reducing Emission of CO2 Proves Difficult

Elephants might be the most well-known and well-loved animal in African wildlife. But conservation (保护) of the African elephant faces special difficulties. While the elephant population is half of what it was 40 years ago, some areas of Africa have more elephants than populated areas can support. That's why AWF scientists are studying elephant behavior, protecting habitats and finding ways for humans to live peacefully with elephants in Africa.
Years ago, overhunting and the ivory trade were the biggest threats to elephants' survival. Luckily, ivory bans (禁令), hunting rules and protected areas protect elephants from these dangers today.
The 21st century brings a different challenge to elephant conservation—land-use. Elephants walk across borders and outside parks and other protected areas. So they often destroy crops, causing conflicts (冲突) between local farmers and these big animals.
Successful conservation strategies (策略) must allow elephants to walk freely in their natural habitats while reducing conflicts between elephants and local people.
AWF researchers are searching for a way to give both elephants and people the space they need. The AWF is collecting information on elephant habitats and behavior. The information they gather will help to develop the widest possible space for elephants.
The AWF is helping elephants by protecting their habitats. And they also work with local farmers to improve their life in order to encourage them to protect rather than destroy elephants.
The first paragraph of the text is mainly to tell readers ________.
African elephants are endangered now
there remains a lot to do to protect African elephants
African elephants are popular animals
the number of African elephants has increased over the years
What is the biggest difficulty in protecting African elephants now?
They are still being killed.
Their habitats are being destroyed.
They don't have enough food.
They can't live in peace with farmers.
To protect elephants, the AWF does all the following EXCEPT ________.
keeping elephants
protecting elephants' habitats
doing research on elephants
helping farmers improve their life
What is the best title for the text?
African elephants conservation
Living with African elephants
African elephants' situation
African elephants being endangered
C
Our environment isn’t as green and beautiful as it should be. There are steel(钢铁) monsters blocking out the sun, blowing out dangerous smoke, and letting out poisonous chemicals into the rivers, cars producing harmful waste gas, people throwing out waste in a wrong way and all other kinds of sources that ruin the planet.Facing current environmental problems, people need to do their best to save the earth.
You can see many big garbage dustbins in the streets. They’re not there for a show, but for you to drop your waste. We should realize that what we do does count. So next time you get that urge to throw gum or a chocolate package out of the car window, or “accidentally” drop as you walk down the street, ask yourself how much waste you’ve been contributing to the environment with that bad habit going on for years.
At home, the first thing we can do to protect the environment is avoid letting water run continuously and make sure that taps(水龙头) are not leaky(漏的), which would help greatly in scrimping(节省). Another is to use energy?saving lights, and turn them off before you leave the rooms. It is not only energy?saving, but also cuts down electricity costs.
Recycling is a method to make items reusable. Many things you want to throw out can be made into new products through the reproducing process. Use your imagination to come up with ways on things that you can use again.
Pass the message of simple ways to save the environment on to kids. Starting with kids is a good way of teaching the message early in their lives, in the hope that they can carry it forward as they grow older.
With environmental protection awareness in mind, we can do what we can, for the results are to have a big effect on the planet. As long as we do our part, the world is one small step closer to being saved.
In the first paragraph the author uses “steel(钢铁) monsters” to describe .
huge buildings B. high mountains
C. big factories D. characters in fairy stories
30. From the fifth paragraph, we can know that .
A. protecting the environment begins with small chores
B. protecting the environment should start from childhood
C. wonderful life comes from environmental protection
D. protecting the environment benefits the country and the people
31. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. The more people do their part, the greener the environment will be.
B. Selling what you don’t want any more is a kind of recycling.
C. To protect the environment may help you save some money.
D. Your bad habits for the environment are a valuable contribution.
32. The passage is mainly about .
A. the use of garbage dustbins
B. how to save water and electricity
C. how to save the environment
D. our current environmental problems

【范文】
Dear President,?
I’m writing to give some suggestions to further protect the Tibetan antelope. As is often reported, too many Tibetan antelopes are being hunted and killed illegally for their fur, from which the illegal hunters can make great profits.
Immediate measures must be taken to improve the present situation. Firstly, the importance of protecting the Tibetan antelopes should be promoted. Secondly, more money should be provided for the conservation of the Tibetan antelopes. Last but not least, I suggest that some volunteers be sent there to help protect the Tibetan antelopes.
These are my suggestions and I hope they could mean something for a better future of the Tibetan antelopes. Looking forward to your reply.?
