A. Why Gay Parents May Be the Best Parents
Gay marriage, and especially gay parenting, has been in the cross hairs in recent days.On Jan. 6, Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum told a New Hampshire audience that children are better off with a father in prison than being raised in a home with lesbian parents and no father at all. And last Monday (Jan. 9), Pope Benedict called gay marriage a threat "to the future of humanity itself," citing the need for children to have heterosexual homes.
But research on families headed by gays and lesbians doesn't back up these dire assertions. In fact, in some ways, gay parents may bring talents to the table that straight parents don't.
Gay parents "tend to be more motivated, more committed than heterosexual parents on average, because they chose to be parents," said Abbie Goldberg, a psychologist at Clark University in Massachusetts who researches gay and lesbian parenting. Gays and lesbians rarely become parents by accident, compared with an almost 50 percent accidental pregnancy rate among heterosexuals, Goldberg said. "That translates to greater commitment on average and more involvement."
And while research indicates that kids of gay parents show few differences in achievement, mental health, social functioning and other measures, these kids may have the advantage of open-mindedness, tolerance and role models for equitable relationships, according to some research. Not only that, but gays and lesbians are likely to provide homes for difficult-to-place children in the foster system, studies show.
Research has shown that the kids of same-sex couples — both adopted and biological kids — fare no worse than the kids of straight couples on mental health, social functioning, school performance and a variety of other life-success measures.
Children of gay parents also reported feeling less stymied by gender stereotypes than they would have been if raised in straight households. That's likely because gays and lesbians tend to have more egalitarian relationships than straight couples, Goldberg said.
"Men and women felt like they were free to pursue a wide range of interests," Goldberg said. "Nobody was telling them, 'Oh, you can't do that, that's a boy thing,' or 'That's a girl thing.'"

B. Dragon gets global stamp of approval
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes.
The same can be said about the dragon, a mythical creature in Chinese and Western culture.
It can be demonstrated no better than in the variety of dragon stamps issued by nearly 20 countries and regions to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
For example, Japan features four cute dragon toys on its stamps. It also features the Chinese character "dragon" in 10 different calligraphic styles by 10 famous calligraphers.
South Korea's dragon stamps depict a cartoon dragon embedded in snowflakes.
The United States, the first country to issue a dragon stamp in 2012, features a vibrant dragonhead in a traditional dragon bined with the style of Chinese paper-cutting, it is a celebration of Chinese folk culture.
The stamp issued by France features the traditional royal golden dragon and Chinese characters.
All of these were in stark contrast with the image presented by China Post. It looks ferocious with its fierce stare and wide-open mouth, which prompted a heated online debate.
"It is roaring and intimidating," a blog post read.
But experts said it was actually a design that was close to China's first stamp, issued in 1878, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Chen Shaohua, the designer of the new stamp, defended his work, saying the dragon should not be too gentle, otherwise it does not match the dragon in traditional culture that was used to exorcise evil spirits, avoid disasters and bless people.
"The dragon is the deity of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, and you can't modernize it like a cartoon," Chen said.
All the different interpretations are a reflection of different cultures in a globalized world, according to stamp experts.
"With stamps, the first thing I can see is the culture, the design," Canadian philatelist Daniel Wong said. "When you see the stamp you see the history too. There's a lot of information in a stamp."
Countries such as Singapore, Canada, New Zealand, Slovenia and the United Kingdom also issued or plan to issue their own dragon stamps.

C. Russian spacecraft to crash to Earth on Sunday
The remainder of the crippled Phobos-Grunt spacecraft is set to crash to Earth on Sunday following its botched mission to Mars, space experts have said.
The minibus-sized Russian craft has been in a low orbit around Earth since losing contact with engineers shortly after its launch on November 8.
It had been intended to explore Phobos, one of Mars's two moons, but became stranded while still orbiting Earth and attempts to put it back on its original course failed.
Most of its mass is expected to burn up as the craft re-enters the atmosphere but 20 or 30 pieces of small debris collectively weighing about 200kg could reach Earth.
In a normal re-entry about 20 per cent of the space junk's mass would be likely to reach Earth, but in the case of Phobos-Grunt it could be even less because it contains large quantities of unused fuel which will burn or dissipate in the atmosphere.
In theory the remains could land anywhere south of Watford or north of the Falkland Islands, with a sea landing most likely due to the size of the oceans relative to the continents.
But scientists said observers would be unlikely to even see the debris crash to Earth unless it flew directly overhead in a clear sky, and that the chances of anyone being injured were absolutely minute.
Prof Richard Crowther of the UK Space Agency said: "The chances are so low – it certainly doesn't keep me awake at night worrying about the probability of a piece of space debris coming through my roof."
He added, however, that international space agencies need to discuss the amount of disused equipment being left in Earth's orbit amid fears space junk could reach a "critical mass" where damaging collisions with active satellites and space craft become inevitable.
The craft will explode on its descent meaning any material reaching the ground could be spread over an area measuring 200km long and 20km wide, and many pieces will be so small they would be hard to spot on the ground.
British experts based at RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire will monitor the craft as it descends but even as it begins its last orbit, 90 minutes before it arrives, they will only be able to predict its landing spot with an uncertainty of 4,000km.

C. spacecraft D. satellite
