In the 1800s women in American had little right. They couldn’t speak in public meetings. They couldn’t go to college so they couldn’t become doctors, lawyers or professors. Their pay might be only one quarter of a man’s and it had to be given to their husbands.
Susan B. Anthony (born in 1820) was aware of the limitations and decided that women could make contributions to the ill of society, so she took on three major issues of her day. The first was the problem of alcoholic (酗酒的) husbands.
Women were often beaten by their husbands when they became drunk. They decided to organize a woman’s group of battle this problem. They called themselves the “Daughters of Temperance (戒酒)”. Temperance became a national issue because alcoholism was destroying American families. Women were naturally drawn to the meetings of the Daughters of Temperance and were quite successful in making all of society aware of this national problem.
The next issue was slavery. Susan had lived for forty-three years before Lincoln freed the slaves. She had such a strong belief that all men should be treated equally that she joined the “Anti-Slavery Society”. This was another important way for her to participate in (参加) the biggest problem facing Americans at that time. Slavery led to the Civil War between the northern states and the southern states.
The third issue that made her famous was the right of women to vote. There was a society concerned with this topic called “the National Association”.
Since men controlled all of society, Susan wanted to prove that women have good opinions and they should have an equal right to express those opinions. Susan tried to vote in elections and she was arrested (逮捕). This brought much interest to the idea of women in the suffrage(选举权) association.
Today, women have all the rights of men to go to school, to vote, and even to get children in divorce cases. It was the bravery of women like Susan B. Anthony that allowed women to enjoy equal rights of men today.

Many thousands of years ago, people had not learned to build houses or shelters of any kind. They lived in caves where they were protected from the rain and snow. The caves were also safe places in which they could sleep without being attacked by bears or wolves.
The tools these people used were made of stone, so we call those times the Stone Age. A hard, sharp-edged piece of stone was an axe-head. These people learnt to bind(捆) the stone to a wooden handle using the tough sinews(腱) from legs of animals they had killed. Pieces of flint(燧石) were collected and smashed(粉碎) with heavier rocks to make pointed flakes(薄片) which were used as arrow tips. Flint stones with sharp edges were used as knives.
The people of the Stone Age hunted animals which included deer, wild horses and wild cattle. After eating the meat, they took the animal’s hide, stretched it out on the ground and scraped off the fat. They left hair on the outside. Then, after they had softened the hide by stamping on it, they polished(磨光) the inside with sandstone. The finished skins gave them rugs and clothes. For needless they poked(戳) thin pointed bones through the skins and stitched them with fine sinews.
We are not certain when the Stone Age began. Scientists think it could have been over a million years ago. They do know that it ended in about 3000 B.C. when people learnt to make things from copper and bronze. There were Stone Age people living in South Africa in the Kalahari Desert, Australia and New Guinea when white settlers arrived not many years ago. In distant parts of New Guinea some tribes have only just begun to use tools made of iron.

What is your favorite color Do you like yellow, orange, and red If you do, you must be an optimist(乐观者), a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer grays(灰色)and blues Then you are probably quiet, shy and you would rather follow than lead. If you love green, you are strong-minded and determined(意志坚定的). You wish to succeed and want other people to see you are successful. At least this is whatpsychologists(心理学家)tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference(爱好), and the effect(影响)that colors have on human beings. They tell us that we don't choose our favorite color as we grow up. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
A yellow room makes us feel more cheerful(开心的)and more comfortable(舒服的)than a dark green one, and a red dress rings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing(压抑). Light and bright colors make people not only happier but more active. It is a fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or dark gray.
Remember, then, that if you feel low, you can always brighten your day or your life with a new shirt or a few colorful things. Remember also that you will know your friends and your enemies better when you find out what colors they like and dislike. And don't forget that anyone can guess a lot about your character when you choose a piece of handkerchief.
70. According to this passage, _________.
 A. one can choose his color preference

 A. one's color preference shows one's character
 B. you can brighten your life with wonderful colors
 C. psychologists have been studying the meaning of color preference
 D. one's color preference has something to do with his character and colors have effects on human beings

According to a report of the Cener for Disease Control, almost 40% of smokers tried to quit smoking during the year of report. Findings from other years were similar. That same report also announced that 10%—20% of smokers who tried to quit — using various methods — were successful. While it is a different process, proper planning, an optimistic attitude, and developing good long-term habit make success entirely possible.
The first step is to determine what methods and tools you want to use. Various methods can double and even triple the chances of successful quitting. These methods and tools include nicotine replacement products, prescription medication (药物疗法) and support programs.
The second step is to pick a date. Don’t plan on quitting during a day you know will be stressful or during a vacation. Pick a regular day, write it down on the calendar, and stick with it.
The third step involves honestly assessing cigarette use and determining alternative (可供选择的) habits. For example, instead of smoking after meals, eat fruit or a small dessert. Instead of smoking in the car, chew gum, listen to an audio book, or sing. During this step, write down the benefits of quitting, which can include saving saving money, being healthy, and less house-cleaning being required.
Step four is actually quitting. For the first few days after quitting, try to stay busy. Keeping busy helps keep the mind occupied, which will help reduce the desire for smoking.
Step five is to be prepared and have a back-up plan. Throw away all the cigarette around the house and car. If possible, don’t carry money. If you don’t have money, you can’t stop to buy cigarettes. If you do smoke a cigareete, write down what made that happen, and how to deal with it next time. The most important thing to do is immediately get back on track!
Step six is rewarding yourself for reaching milestones. After a day, buy yourself a dessert. After three days, buy a book or small item you’ve wanted. After a week, buy a clothing item or pair of shoes… Ensure that the rewards are actually items you want and will look forward to purchasing.
The seventh and final is developing good long-item habits. This is vital in becoming a non-smoker, and it is a step that many people skip. Continue to put aside the money you would have spent on cigarettes into a “rewarding” find. Keep a list of things to do in case you have a great desire for smoking at all times. Sometimes the desire can come months after quitting without warning. The good news is that the longest desire only lasts a few minutes. In order to prevent you from going back to smoking again, it is a good idea to have a list of activities to do instead of smoking. Start an exercise program no matter how small it is, and enjoy your improved lung function. Avoid places that may make you want to smoke, such as bars and parties. The following are some good ideas:
Drink a glass of water.
Chew a piece of gum or have some sugar-free candy.
Go for a short walk.
Cross-stitch, sew, or read for a few minutes.
Spend five minutes cleaning.
Fold laundry.
Play a video or computer game for a few minutes.
The only way to fail completely is by giving up. By making a good plan, staying optimistic, and developing good long-term habits, anyone can be in the 20% that succeed in quitting smoking this year.
75. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. A guide to quitting smoking.
B. Tools to help quit smoking.
C. Preparations for quitting smoking.
D. The importance of quitting smoking.
76. We can infer from the passage that .
A. if you are under much pressure, maybe it’s hard for you to quit smoking.
B. if you have an optimistic attitude, you are sure to quit smoking.
C. if you are busy, you have no time to smoke a cigarette
D. if you smoke a cigarette during the quitting time, you’ll fail to stop smoking
77. According to paragraph4, which of the following is NOT an alternative habit to smoking
A. Eating fruit or a small dessert
B. Chewing gum or singing songs
C. Listening to an audio book.
D. Doing some cleaning
78. The fifth step can be listed under the title “ ”.
A. Before quitting smoking.
