Van Gogh painted sunflowers for the first time in the summer of 1886. Two years later, his interest appeared again after he settled in Arles. After he had invited the French artist Paul Gauguin, whom he admired, to join his Studio of the South, he began painting sunflowers to brighten up the whitewashed walls of the yellow house he was living in, not far from the town’s railway station.
Gauguin accepted Van Gogh’s invitation. When he began dragging his heels(脚后跟), Van Gogh painted the last two of the four original Sunflowers for the modest bedroom where his guest would sleep following his arrival that autumn, “Van Gogh saw the Sunflowers for Gauguin’s bedroom as a way of attracting his friend to come from Brittany, “says Bailey.
According to Martin Gayford, “Gauguin was very surprised by the Sunflowers, which he repeatedly praised and asked for as a gift. Years later, Gauguin himself painted some sunflower pictures. ”
Van Gogh’s Sunflowers stand for (代表)his relationship with Gauguin. “I think he painted them for the joy of it, ” says Jansen. “Van Gogh was at the height of his powers in the summer of 1888, ”explains Bailey. “He painted the Sunflowers quickly and with great energy and confidence. ” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo in late August, “I’m painting quickly now, which won’t surprise you when it’s a question of painting large Sunflowers. ”
Van Gogh recognized at once that he had created something important and that his sunflowers were so different. As he told Theo in January 1889, while other artists were known for painting other flowers, “The sunflower is mine. ” This, in fact, explains the reason for the popularity of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers today.

Georgia O’Keeffe always thought of herself as an artist. By 1928, the rest of the world did, too. At the age of 41 she was living in New York City and becoming a well-known painter. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t happy. New York had been a good source of ideas for almost ten years. Now those ideas were drying up. O’Keeffe felt like she needed a change. She had visited New Mexico in 1917 with her sister. The wide open space had thrilled her. “Maybe I should go back, ” she thought. In April of 1929, O’Keeffe packed her bags.
The wide open space of New Mexico drew O’Keeffe in. She spent hours just watching the sky change. Because the light was so clear, she felt like she could see for the first time. The beauty of the land renewed her. She couldn’t wait to start painting. Cow and horse skulls and desert flowers filled her canvases (画布). The colors of the desert inspired O’Keeffe. As a result, she made new choices in her artwork. “The color up there is different, ” she explained. She loved the dusty blues and greens.
That August, O’Keeffe went home to New York. It was the start of a pattern. Each spring, she traveled to New Mexico to paint. These trips restored her spirit. Then, in the fall, she would return to New York. There, she showed her work. Each time O’Keeffe visited New Mexico, she explored a little more.
The bleached(漂白的, 晒白的) animal bones and skulls that O’Keeffe found excited her because she could see their special beauty. The bones didn’t mean death to O’Keeffe. To her, they showed the lasting beauty of the desert. The landscapes, clear light, and bright colors also spoke to her. She often painted close-ups of the rocks and mountains. Later, she began to travel more in search of new ideas. However, she always came back to New Mexico.
As O’Keeffe grew older, her eyesight began to fail. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t ready to give up. Her friend Juan Hamilton helped her work with watercolors. He also taught her to sculpt. As a result, she made art into her 90s. When she died at the age of 98, Hamilton sprinkled her ashes over the desert. Her body became part of the land that had touched her art and her life.

Even though a lot of art galleries and museums are free in the UK, many people seldom visit them for fear that they won’t understand the art on display. They are afraid that other visitors may be more knowledgeable and that everyone else there understands what the artworks mean. But this simply isn’t true. Everyone is equal in front of an artwork and there are no wrong answers.
Modern art can be particularly difficult to understand and appreciate but enjoying an artwork is a natural gift. Do you like it or not? Do you want to find out more or not? It really is that simple.
A very well-respected art historian, Ernst Gombrich believed that a viewer completed the artwork, and that part of an artwork’s meaning came from the person viewing it. So, you see—even if you don’t have an art history degree, there really are no wrong answers, as the viewer is completing the artwork.
But there are things you can do to understand and appreciate art a little bit more. When I look at an artwork, I undertake a visual analysis. I look at the formal elements—color, texture, size. Imagine we’re viewing a painting. I look at the color; I look at the brush strokes; I look at what is being described. If you’re looking at artworks in a gallery, read the wall text at the side of the artwork. If staff are present, ask questions. Ask your fellow visitors what they think. Asking questions is the key to understanding more. But above all, have confidence in front of an artwork. If you are appreciating an artwork, then you are the intended viewer and what you think matters. You are the only critic that counts.
32. According to the text, why do people seldom visit museums?
A. Many art museums are free in the UK.
B. They aren’t confident in front of artworks.
C. The artworks there are not completed.
D. They are not interested in artworks.
33. What is Ernst Gombrich’s opinion about artworks?
A. Their meanings vary from person to person.
B. Asking questions is the key to understanding them.
C. It takes an art history degree to appreciate them.
D. They need an analysis of color, texture and size.
34. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. An art magazine.
C. A novel. D. A science report.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How to understand art
B. The power of artworks
C. The road to modern art
D. How to open an art gallery

We moved on into the jungle— a forest where large numbers of tall trees and plants grow very close together. Old Mali went in front and I followed close behind him. We stopped for the night about an hour before it began to get dark.
Old Mali lit a fire. When it was bright he showed me how to make a bed with moss(青苔, 苔藓).
It was soft and comfortable.
―Mali, how did you learn to make such a bed? I asked.
―I learned to make beds like that, Mali replied, ―by watching and listening to others. That is the real way to learn anything.
―Will you let me watch you always? I asked Old Mali.
―I want to learn all the things you know about the jungle.
When we had finished our supper, Old Mali got onto his bed and lay down. It was now completely dark. In the fire light, Old Mali seemed to be fast asleep on his bed. I suddenly felt alone and afraid.
All day in the jungle, while we had been walking, I had heard noises of animals. Now they seemed to be much nearer. The jungle was now a wall of blackness in the light of the fire.
I felt frightened and suddenly my mouth went dry. I wanted to scream. I felt my mouth opening wide, ready to scream as loud as possible.
But I did not scream. I saw Old Mali’s face in the fire light. This made me feel ashamed. I held my teeth tightly together to stop myself from screaming. I lay down and closed my eyes.
As soon as I closed my eyes. I heard a thousand noises. The whole jungle became alive with animals moving quietly and carefully all around me. Suddenly Old Mali took a deep breath and made a noise. I was hearing so many imaginary noises and the real noise made by Old Mali gave me a terrible fright.
I opened my eyes and jumped out of bed. I pulled my knife out and held it above my head.
注意:
续写词数应为 150 左右。

Later, she began to travel more in search of new ideas. However, she always came back to New Mexico.
As O’Keeffe grew older, her eyesight began to fail. Still, O’Keeffe wasn’t ready to give up. Her friend Juan Hamilton helped her work with watercolors. He also taught her to sculpt.

第二节 读后续写
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was going to see if there was a wild animal beside the fire.
Old Mali’s quiet calm voice made me feel better.
【参考范文】
I was going to see if there was a wild animal beside the fire. Through the burning fire, I believed I saw its sharp teeth and cruel red eyes. Its craws would insert into my flesh without mercy as soon as I came into its sight. I couldn’t help trembling and screaming loudly at the thought of it. Then a soft voice came from the dark, “Are you Okey? ” It was Old Mali who was now lying on his side with his eyes open.
Old Mali’s quiet calm voice made me feel better. Adjusting breath quickly and observing carefully, I found the “animal” was just the shade of trees. I laughed in relief and told Old Mali what had happened just now. Having known the whole story, Mali gave me an understanding smile and told me his former experiences in jungle. With these stories, I got back to my bed and lay down. Exhausted, I closed my eyes, and knowing Old Mali was watching, I soon fell fast asleep. That night was so unforgettable that it would stay in my memory forever.
