When people discuss education ,they insist that preparation for examinations is not the main purpose .They are right in theory ,but in practice ,we all realize how important examinations are. What do you know about the examinations taken at English secondary (中级的)schools Here are a few facts about some of them .
Pupils who remain at school until they are sixteen normally take what is called the General Certificate (合格证) of Education at Ordinary Level. The examination is a subject examination .This means you can take a number of subjects , Some pupils take as many as ten . The more subjects the better chance a pupil has of getting a job on leaving school . For short , this examination is called G.C.E."A" Level. This certificate in five or six subjects is , if you like ,the required starting point for types of work and also for many types of professional (职业的)training .
Pupils who remain at school until they are eighteen or nineteen generally take the General Certificate of Education at Advanced Level popularly known as G.C.E."A" Level .This examination is usually taken in two ,three or four specialized subjects .And because it is for the specialist, you have to study each subject intensively (深入仔细地) .A pupil who has passed two or three "A" levels can apply for (申请) admission(准许进入) to a university .
These two examinations are written ones .Many English children take one or the other or both .Not all of them pass.

The Internet has become a part of teenage life.
A new report on 3,375 students aged from 10 to 18 in seven Chinese cities found that 38 percent of them believe they use the Internet often.

In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook on good Internet behavior has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who finally found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan sailed from Seville in August, 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the cold winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan Strait(海峡). In November, 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.
They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines, men were dying of starvation. While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle. The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them to do. When this happens, a parent tries to help the child to do the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually punishes the child.
There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that people have done is to spank (打屁股) the child. When a parent spanks a child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on their bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done something wrong.
One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child. His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his child’s leg. He never did that again.
One problem with spanking is that it teaches the child to hit someone when they do not like what the other person is doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is usually angry and can hit the child too hard. Sometimes parents will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the child to do the right thing.
Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking. Some people think that their religion(宗教)tells them that spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The courts (法院) say that parents have the right to teach their children how to behave.
Other things should be tried before a parent decides to spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child’s level and taking a more child-friendly approach (方法) can help as well.
67..According to the passage, when children do something wrong, one thing that parents usually do to punish them is to ________.
