The ancient village of Machu Picchu is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America. It’s in Peru, high in the Andes Mountains, 8, 000 feet above sea level.
The village contains 200 buildings. Houses are in groups, and each house has a large courtyard inside its walls. The Incas(印加人) used the areas outside the groups of houses to grow corn and potatoes and to raise animals. The Incas were very good at building strong walls. Visitors to Machu Picchu still cannot fit a knife between the stones of a village home.
Machu Picchu seemed to be a healthy, busy village. So why was it lost? That is a mystery, but experts have some ideas. Machu Picchu was hard to reach. Few people outside the village knew about it. Experts think that many residents died of disease. Others fought a war. The survivors left the village.
The tourists are good for Peru’s economy, but they are not good for Machu Picchu. The village is old and fragile. Tourists damage the ruins. Thousands of footsteps from visitors wear down the walkways in the village. Salt and oil from people’s hands damage the walls. Air pollution from buses hurts the stones. Tourists do not want to damage the village, but they want to see this beautiful, ancient place.
The Peruvian government and conservation groups are trying to solve the problem. A group from the United Nations wants to limit the number of tourists each year. They also want cars and buses to use cleaner fuel.
8. What crops did the Incas grow?
A. Rice and beans. B. Tomatoes and peas.
C. Wheat and peas. D. Potatoes and corn.
9. How do we know that Incas were good at building walls?

C. Footsteps wear down the walkways in the village.
D. Each house has a large courtyard inside its walls.
10. Which word can best replace the underlined word “fragile” in fourth paragraph?
A. Beautiful. B. Terrible. C. Clean. D. Weak.
11. Which of the following does not damage the ruins?

“I felt so much more confident after I had my plastic surgery--liposuction(脂肪抽吸) .” said Wu, now a 30-year-old model and entrepreneur(企业家) based in Beijing. In the 16 years since that first surgery, Wu claims to have had over 100 ones, costing an unbelievable 4 million yuan. She is now a well-known advocate of the industry and has opened two beauty clinics offering plastic surgery in Beijing, and Wu’s potential market is huge.
A growing number of Chinese women are using plastic surgery to achieve bigger eyes, high cheekbones, narrow noses and skinny legs. Like Wu, many are seeking to imitate a beauty ideal inspired by elements of Japan’s comics, South Korea’s K-Pop and Western culture.
In 2014 more than 7 million Chinese people had plastic surgery, according to the China Association of Plastics and Aesthetics. Just three years later, data collected by Shanghai branch of Frost & Sullivan consultants suggested the figure was closer to 16.3 million.
According to experts interviewed by CNN, the trend in plastic surgery in China is partly due to a series of apps like So-Young and GengMei, which allow potential patients to view before and after photos, book surgeries and even apply for credit to pay for them.
“In China, it is very difficult to find reliable information on clinics, especially in smaller cities,” explained Tony DeGennaro, co-founder of Dragon Social, a Chinese market intelligence agency. “People no longer trust the search results offered by Baidu, following several medical scandals(丑闻) involving the platform, so these new apps have taken over as unofficial directories of surgeons.”
Despite the difficulties in choosing suitable clinics, a variety of people are crazy about plastic surgery, making the industry larger and larger.
12. What is Wu’s attitude towards plastic surgery?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Negative.
13. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To give a summary.
C. To give an explanation. D. To make a comparison.
14. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Baidu offers reliable information on clinics.
B. Some plastic surgery apps become more popular.
C. Baidu is responsible for designing these new apps.
D. People never believe the search results from Baidu.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. To buy a new face with apps.
B. To keep fit by plastic surgery.
C. A big market of plastic surgery.
D. The advantages of plastic surgery apps.

2.推理判断题。根据第一段“ In the 16 years since that first surgery, Wu claims to have had over 100 ones, costing an unbelievable 4 million yuan. She is now a well-known advocate of the industry and has opened two beauty clinics offering plastic surgery in Beijing, and Wu’s potential market is huge.”讲述了吴女士对整形手术的经历和看法,第二段接着讲述现在有很多人为了变美而进行整形手术,所以第一段的目的是为了引入话题。故选A。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“According to experts interviewed by CNN, the trend in plastic surgery in China is partly due to a series of apps like So-Young and GengMei, which allow potential patients to view before and after photos, book surgeries and even apply for credit to pay for them.”(美国有线电视新闻网(CNN)采访的一些专家表示,中国的整容风潮在一定程度上要归功于So-Young和更美等一系列应用程序,这些应用程序允许潜在患者查看手术前后的照片,记录手术情况,甚至申请信用卡来支付手术费用。)和第五段最后一句“these new apps have taken over as unofficial directories of surgeons”(这些新的应用程序已经成为外科医生的非官方名录)可知,一些整形手术应用程序变得更加流行了,所以选项B对,故选B。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文尤其根据最后一段“Despite the difficulties in choosing suitable clinics, a variety of people are crazy about plastic surgery, making the industry larger and larger.”(尽管选择合适的诊所很困难,但各种各样的人都热衷于整形手术,使得这个行业越来越大。)可知,文章主要是讲整形手术的巨大市场。所以短文的最佳标题为“ 整形手术的巨大市场”。故选C。

From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled(爬)under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, "Thanks."

Sleep Struggle
One in every five young people has a sleep problem, so you're not alone. Getting enough sleep has become as important as eating vegetables and exercising regularly. It's very important for your body.
Most young people only get seven hours of sleep each night, when they actually need nine hours. And making up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping on weekends doesn't really work. In fact, sleeping late on weekends may actually do you more harm than good, if you have sleep problems.

* Avoid drinking. Alcohol(酒精)makes you excited. This prevents you from falling asleep or wakes you up during the night.

Part of a research study, by scientists at McMaster University, which is ongoing into the influence of drinking milk after heavy weightlifting, has observed that milk helps exercisers burn more fat.
The scientists took three groups of young men 18 to 30 years of age, 56 in total, and put them through a strict, five day per week weightlifting program over a 12-week period. Following their workouts, study participants drank either two cups of skim milk(脱脂奶),or a soy beverage with equal amounts of protein and energy,or a carbohydrate beverage with an equal amount of energy.
Upon the study's conclusion, scientists observed that: the milk drinking group had lost nearly twice as much fat—two pounds—as those in the carbohydrate beverage group, who lost one pound of fat. Those drinking soy beverages lost no fat. At the same time, the gain in muscle was much greater among the milk drinkers than either the soy or carbohydrate beverage participants.
As published in the first stage of the study, the milk drinking group came out on top in terms of muscle gain with an estimated 40 percent or 2.5 pounds more muscle mass than the soy beverage drinkers. In addition, this group gained 63 percent or 3.3 pounds more muscle mass than the carbohydrate beverage drinkers.
"I think the evidence is beginning to increase," says Stuart Phillips—the leader of the study. "Milk may be best known for its calcium(钙)content in supporting bone health, but our research, and later others', can continually support milk's ability to aid in muscle growth and also promote body fat loss. Milk is the ideal post workout drink for recreational exercisers and athletes alike."
32. How many days did the participants lift weights in the program?
A. 56 days. B. 84 days. C. 60 days. D. 12 days.
33. What does the underlined word "beverage" probably mean?

34. According to the passage, we can know that
A. the scientists chose people aged 18,30 and 56 as participants of the research
B. a soy beverage is a proper choice for losing weight over the long term
C. people who drink milk every day are always healthier and thinner than others
D. soy beverages are better than carbohydrate beverages for exercisers to gain muscle
35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. What exercisers should do to lose weight.
B. How milk influences people's health and figure.
C. The differences between milk and soy or carbohydrate beverages.
D. A research about the effect of drinking milk on exercisers.

Waste can be seen everywhere in the school. Some students ask for more food than they can eat and others often forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom. They say they can afford these things. But I don't agree with them.
Waste can bring a lot of problems. Although China is rich in some resources, we are short of others, for example, fresh water. It is reported that we will have no coal or oil to use in 100 years. So if we go on wasting our resources, what can we use in the future and where can we move? Think about it. I think we should say no to the students who waste things every day. Everybody should stop wasting as soon as possible.
In our everyday life,we can do many things to prevent waste from happening. For example, turn off the water taps when we finish washing, turn off the lights when we leave the classroom, try not to order more food than we need, and so on. Little by little, everything will be changed. Waste can be stopped one day,if we do our best.

In December, Facebook’s own researchers publicly questioned if Facebook could be a danger to the public’s health in mind. I’d already been considering whether to give up or not for months, but this news helped me to decide what I would do; I was done.
I’m a freelancer (自由职业). If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. Therefore, it’s fair to say that Facebook was influencing my work life and my pay. My working day used to go a little something like this: coffee, check emails, start writing, check Facebook, answer the phone, check Facebook, continue writing, check Facebook. You get the picture. Each work-related task was balanced out by social media, which made it difficult for me to focus on what I was doing.
Now that my Facebook does not work, I no longer have the chance to check it. I get much more work done and have time to reply to more emails and talk to possible clients (客户). However, the urge to log back on (重新登录) comes over me a few times per day, which makes me frightened. It could be a sign that I couldn’t live without social media.
Right now, I don’t know what the people I know are doing and, you know what, I couldn’t care less. I’m getting on with my own thing and so are they. Isn’t that how life was like before social media anyway?
28. What made the author finally decide to give up Facebook?
A. Dangers from checking writings. B. His low pay.
C. News published by its researchers. D. His poor health.
29. What does the underlined word “balanced out” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Finished. B. Interrupted. C. Promoted. D. Tricked.
30. Why does the author feel frightened?
A. He has fewer clients to talk to.
B. He has the urge to return to Facebook.
C. He has much work to deal with.
D. He has more emails to reply to.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The author’s experience of giving up Facebook.
B. Facebook’s recent development.
C. Facebook’s influences on people’s health.
D. The author’s scientific study on social media.

I love snakes. My mom definitely does not. When she was a kid, snakes used to hide in warm spots under the furniture. So she grew up afraid she'd step on a snake. I grew up hoping I'd see one outside! Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never even seen one. So where does our fear come from?
Scientists wonder about this too. Their experiments with adults, kids, and even babies show that it's complicated. In tests with pictures, people picked out snakes faster than they could find flowers, frogs, and caterpillars. It wasn't just snakes, though. People also found spiders and angry faces faster than "safe" things like flowers. It seems like we find things that might be dangerous to us faster than things that aren't
People also learn to fear snakes faster than we learn to fear many other things. We take our hints from other people's scared voices and faces. Some scientists think we've evolved this way faster to see snakes and faster to learn to fear them. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it's dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why does it matter if we're afraid of snakes? It may not matter much to us, but it matters to snakes. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as dolphins, but they're just as important to the environment. Snakes eat insects that are pests to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals, so when we kill snakes, we're hurting other creatures too.
How do we get past our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a study recently where students of your age went on a field trip, Guides helped them find and capture snakes in the forest. Everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. It turns out that snakes aren't so bad when you get to know them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren't afraid afterward. In fact, snakes even became some students' favorite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mom on the next field trip.
Remember: Always respect snakes, whether you're afraid of them or not.
32. According to Paragraph 3, people's fear comes from ____________.
A. school education B. scientific researches
C. self-experience D. others' influence
33. Which paragraph shows people the way to overcome their fear of snakes?
A. Paragraph 2. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5.
34. Which of the following is Wrong?
A. In tests with pictures, people may pick out tigers faster than rabbits.
B. Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem.
C. Snakes are not so bad; therefore, everyone can safely catch snakes in the forest.
D. After the field trip, few people may still be afraid of snakes.
35. Which of the following will the author agree with?
A. Snakes are not dangerous at all.
B. People should make peace with snakes.
C. People's fear matters little to snakes.
D. Snakes are well protected by humans.

My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl’s writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda’s battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they’re also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters--- Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse “night people” who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Fynn
There was a bit of me that didn’t want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There’s tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It’s a real whodunit(推理小说) and the frustration when you realize what’s going on is horribly enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world’s population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.

My 10-year-old Donna said, “Mom,I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow?” Donna was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
“Sure, honey, that sounds great,” I said, thinking back to my own best friend, Lillian. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too.Like my daughter,I was shy, but Lillian drew me out.She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile.
In senior high school, Lillian went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon,” she told me.But three days later,Lillian’s sister told me that she had fallen into a river and hadn’t come out any more. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey. Whenever I thought of her, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Donna brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs.Loggia,” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she shot me a big smile. “My name is Laura.”
My daughter’s new friend was so much like Lillian.I was still puzzled(迷惑的) when Laura’s mom came to pick her up later that afternoon.I opened the door to let her in.“Judy!” she cried. “It’s me,Lillian’s sister, from Washington Heights.” Yes, my daughter’s friend looked familiar. She was Lillian’s niece.

Do you like shopping? Or does the thought of wandering round the shops fill you with terror? For some of us, shopping is an enjoyable way of spending our spare time and our money. For me, it’s something I would rather avoid. Thank goodness for the Internet! It’s more convenient to buy CDs, electrical items, even food, from the comfort of your sofa. But that’s not the only reason: price is an important factor. We can buy goods and services cheaper online. But sometimes the problem is knowing what to buy. This has led to a type of shopping called “showrooming”.
Showrooming is something I’ve done. I will go to a shop to see, touch and try out products but then go home and buy them online at a knock-down price. I’m not alone in doing this. Research by a company called Foolproof, found 24% of people showroomed while Christmas shopping in 2013.
Amy Cashman, head of Technology at TNS UK, says the reasons for this new shopping habit are that “people are lacking time, lacking money and they want security about the products they are buying”. She explains that consumers are not only shopping online at home but they are using the Internet in store or on their smartphones to shop around.
But does this mean technology will kill shops? Certainly shops will change. They will have to offer more competitive prices or encourage people to buy more by giving in---store discounts or free gifts.
We mustn’t forget that buying in a shop means you can get expert advice from the sales assistant and you can get good aftercare. It’s good to speak to a real human rather than look at a faceless computer screen but at least by showrooming, you get the best of both worlds!
28.The two questions in Paragraph l are raised to ________.

C.compare different opinions D.get answers from readers

A.The lack of time. B.The comfort of the sofa.

31.The author’s attitude towards showrooming is ________.
A.critical B.neutral C.supportive D.casual

Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives (马尔代夫) are among the most beautiful islands in the world, with sandy white beaches, clear water, and amazing coral reefs (珊瑚礁). The country depends on tourism, fishing, and shipping. But the rising sea level and the carbon pollution causing warming oceans are threatening (威胁) their existence.
The Maldives have asked for international help. They are a tiny country. The World Bank, the United States, the European Union, and many other groups have offered money to develop safeguards against climate change.
To protect the islands, the Maldives have built sea walls and increased the elevation (海拔) of important buildings and services such as the two international airports, which lie just 165 feet from the coastline.
They're also building up islands such as the Hulhumale. The new island is surrounded by nine-foot sea walls. More than 40,000 people live there. The plan is to house 240, 000, providing new opportunities for jobs. The goal is an excellent planned community with sustainable housing and buildings sensitive to the environment and needs of the people.
The government will move people living on smaller, lower-lying islands to the new built-up islands. The new islands offer free houses, new schools, health hospitals, fresh water, and waste treatment. Depending on tourism, the country hopes to build 50 more tourist islands.

You can’t imagine how terrible I felt at that time. A month before my first marathon(马拉松), one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

30. How was the author’s first marathon?

? I really love this saying, “ Love is endless and unlimited.” For me, there’s a story behind it. When I used to hand out chocolates with beautiful paper bags, my friends always told me , “You are wasting time and money. No one here believes in nameless gifts.” To be honest, I have noticed that people here do donate (捐赠)in temples. They give food to the poor, and provide clothes and other things for whoever is in need.
?? ?I think maybe I am the one who starts to think of the dogs in our neighborhood. When I moved into this new community, I noticed that there were two street dogs. They were wounded and homeless, and everyone used to stay away from them and hit them when they came any closer. They were becoming thinner and thinner and they would did of hunger sooner or later.
??? But my habit of loving dogs has changed all these things. I began to walk close to them and give them food regularly. When I touched their heads and gave love to them, I could see tears in their eyes. My friends noticed , and now even kids and elders in the community provide them with food and also love them. I am really glad to see that I saved their lives.
??? What I started will lead to beautiful memories with them. They enjoy playing with me and they even have a particular pose when they see me. I see a sparkle in their eyes and a smile on their faces. They are priceless for me.
