A “working” vacation can easily become just 46 . Business owners who think they can just take “five minutes” to check on the office often take far more. It’s not just five minutes; it’s the entire vacation.
Jacqueline Church Simonds, owner of book publisher Beagle Bay, found her self in a(n) 47 situation in January, when she and her husband took a cruise around Australia and New Zealand for two and a half weeks. She had 48 not to check work emails while on board the ship, but soon found herself going through the Internet and working because the employee who she had left in charge was mishandling things.
One way for business owners to give themselves a real vacation is to plan well in advance, including 49 clients that they’ll be gone. “Recognized that part of your goal is to let the company run without you, and that the business owner shouldn’t be necessary,” says Julie Kirk, president of Path Forward International.
The best way to break the reliance on technology is to feel 50 leaving the business in the first place. Train your employees to handle projects and problems – in your 52 .
Opinions 53 on whether you should check email or make work calls while on vacation. Many business owners say they are too 54 if they don’t. But if you have to check, set some boundaries. You are doing yourself and your business 54 if you don’t take that vacation and get refreshed.

Most of us can remember the days when we didn’t use e-mail as everyday vehicle for communication. Slowly but surely, it crept into our lives. E-mail is a valuable tool for American college students at any level. It’s available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and even at holidays. Most universities assign students an account upon entrance, so there is usually not even a choice involved.
You can do everything from consulting on homework and projects, keeping in touch with classmates, corresponding with families and friends, and getting daily news services to keep you posted on world events. But what are the disadvantages?
E-mail can be e-jail. You might spend hours writing and responding to e-mails when you should devote yourself to the books for an upcoming examination. Or, you might be signed up for so many daily services such as horoscopes (星座), news services, or personals, that your mailbox is so filled up with “junk mail”, that finding the important e-mails through your mailbox might take hours.
If you are a student, time is valuable. Create and organize your e-mail folders into important school-related mail, correspondence with friends and family, and a mixed folder for jokes, horoscopes and other news services. Always put the mail into the appropriate folders first, and when you’re finished, head for the important school-related folder first. Respond to the most important e-mails first and, if you have time, you can get to the others.
Discourage your friends from forwarding those tiresome joke lists and chain e-mail. The minute you realize you’ve got one, delete it immediately so you won’t be tempted to read it.
72. What is mainly discussed in the second paragraph
A. How to make use of e-mail B. How to post your e-mail.
C. The advantages of e-mail D. The problems with e-mail
73. The author suggests that a college student should have at least __________ e-mail folders.
A. two B. three C. four D. five

Younger white women with vitamin D deficiencies are about three times more likely to have high blood pressure in middle age than those with normal vitamin levels, according to a study released on Thursday.
The study, presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association in Chicago, adds younger women to a growing list of people including men who may develop high blood pressure at least in part because of low vitamin D.
Researchers in Michigan, who examined data on 559 women beginning in 1992, found that those with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to have high blood pressure 15 years later in 2007.
“Our results indicate that early vitamin D deficiency may increase the long-term risk of high blood pressure in women at mid-life,” said Flojaune Griffin, who worked on the study for the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
Vitamin D, which the human body can make from sunlight and which is found in fatty fish, fortified milk products and dietary supplements, has long been known to contribute to healthy bones and teeth.
But deficiencies, which are widespread in women, are linked to cancer, immune system (免疫系统) problems and diseases. High blood pressure raises the likelihood of heart disease and other similar problems.
The women in the blood pressure study lived in Tecumseh, Michigan, and were 24 to 44 years old with an average age of 38, when the research began.
Researchers measured vitamin D blood levels at the beginning and took blood pressure readings once a year. In 2007, they compared the readings – the top number in blood pressure results that indicates the pressure within blood vessel (血管) when the heart beats. More than 10 percent of women with vitamin D deficiencies had high blood pressure in 2007, compared with 3.7 percent of those with sufficient levels. When the study began, 5.5 percent with deficiencies also had high blood pressure, compared to 2.8 percent with normal vitamin D.
The study was funded by the U.S. National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Almost half the population worldwide has lower-than-optimal levels of vitamin D and researchers say the problem is worsening as people spend more time indoors. African-Americans seem at especially high risk as dark skin can make it harder for the body to absorb ultraviolet light.
74. The underlined word “deficiencies” in paragraph 1 refers to ___________.
A. fault B. lack C. efficiency D. adequacy
75. From the passage, we can know _________.
A. staying too long indoors is the main reason for many people lacking
vitamin D.
B. the study was provided with money by the American Heart Association in
Chicago.
C. 40 percent people had deficiencies in 2007.
D. women are more likely to suffer diseases.
76. What is the passage mainly about
A. Women suffering high blood pressure all lack vitamin D.
B. Low vitamin D raises blood pressure in women.
C. High blood pressure contributes to low vitamin D.
D. Vitamin D is important to blood pressure.

Science fiction writers have often imagined humans going to live on Mars, and now scientists are taking the idea seriously.
It has a great deal to recommend living on Mars, since it might solve the problem of overcrowding on the earth. However, it obviously would not be worth the effort unless we could live there naturally, in an atmosphere like that of the earth; it is now mostly carbon dioxide. But there are other problems to overcome. For example, the temperature would have to be raised from 6 degrees below zero to 15 degrees above it. Recent exploration has shown evidence of water on Mars, and the presence of Martian ice cap means that if the ice could be melted there might be enough water to live on. Another problem would be gravity. Mars has a gravity of 0.38g relative to Earth’s 1g, the closest to Earth among the theoretically habitable bodies in the solar system, but still quite low, and possibly giving rise to health problems associated with lower gravity.
Despite such problems, scientists who study Mars have laid down a program they could follow. To begin with, they would have to find out whether life ever existed on the planet in the past. Then they would have to make a reliable map of its surface, and finally they would have to make a list of its gases. Above all, they would have to find out how much nitrogen it possesses and believe it could be done in a hundred years. Since nitrogen is four fifths of the air we breathe, they are optimistic about raising the temperature on Mars if nitrogen is enough. It would take a bit longer, though, to transform the atmosphere to one in which human beings could live. The scientists estimate that this could take one hundred thousand years. But gravity will be another problem.
Why are scientists interested in Mars
Because people might have to move there some day.
Because they find there is water on Mars.
Because it’s easier to explore than other planets.
Because its surface is different from that of the earth.
Which of the following should scientists overcome to live on Mars
a. water shortage b. bad atmosphere c. low temperature d. low gravity
A. bcd B. abc C. acd D. abd
79. What do we learn about nitrogen from the text
A. It can cause health problems on Mars.
B. It makes up four-fifths of the air on Mars.
C. It takes up a larger part than carbon dioxide on Mars.
D. It makes up most of the atmosphere on the earth.
80. We can learn from the text that ___________.
A. scientists found that life had ever existed on Mars
B. scientists are not optimistic about people being able to live on Mars
C. we will probably be able to live on Mars in 100,000 years
D. scientists are now making a map of the surface of Mars

________________
Sara tried to befriend her old friend Steve’s new wife, but Betty never seemed to have anything to say. While Sara felt Betty didn’t hold up her end of the conversation, Betty complained to Steve that Sara never gave her a chance to talk. The problem had to do with expectations about pacing and pausing.
________________
Conversation is a turn-taking game. When our habits are similar, there’s no problem. But if our habits are different, you may ask to talk before I’m finished or fail to take your turn when I’m finished. That’s what was happening with Betty and Sara.
________________
It may not be coincidental that Betty, who expected relatively longer pauses between turns, is British, and Sara, who expected relatively shorter pauses, is American. Betty often felt interrupted by Sara. But Betty herself became an interrupter and found herself doing most of the talking when she met a visitor from Finland, and Sara had a hard time cutting in on some speakers from Latin America or Israel.
________________
The general phenomenon, then, is that the small conversation techniques, like pacing and pausing, lead people to draw conclusions not about conversational style but about personality and abilities. These habitual differences are often the basis for dangerous stereotyping, and these social phenomena can have very personal consequences. For example, a woman from the southern part of the US went to live in an eastern city to take up a job in personnel. When the Personnel Department got together for meetings, she kept searching for the right time to cut in – and never found it. Although back home she was considered outgoing and confident, in Washington she was viewed as shy and retiring. When she was evaluated at the end of the year, she was told to take a training course because of her inability to speak up.
________________
That’s why slight differences in conversational style – tiny little things like microseconds of pause – can have a great effect on one’s life. The result in this case was a judgment of psychological problems – even in the mind of the woman herself, who really wondered what was wrong with her and registered for assertiveness training.
