Dear Editor,
I’m Wang Ping, a senior-three student. I’m writing to your newspaper about something that surprises me. Nowadays, no matter which tourist attraction we visit, we can also see such words as “I’ve visited this place” carved in walls or trees. Obviously, these words don’t go well with the surroundings. What’s more, it ruins the ancient buildings, or spoils our natural environment. The reason for this is probably that some tourists don’t have the sense of protecting our cultural heritage.
In my opinion, we should have strict rules to discipline those tourists’ bad behavior and they should be forced to pay for the damage. I sincerely hope that your newspaper can help urge all the tourists to behave themselves while traveling.
Best wishes.
Sincerely yours
Wang Ping

Most of the large cities in the world have grown without plans, among that London is such a city. Its streets wind its way and there is no reason for the street numbering system. Indeed, no one but a training taxi driver knows the whole of London. And before he gets his license, he must first tour the city for month, street by street, and then take a test to prove that whether he can find his way around. New York and Chicago had developed in much the same way. They spread out like water expanding at all directions. However, there are a few modern cities built strict according to detailed plans. One of the outstanding cities planning and built in twentieth century is Brasilia, the new capital of Brazil.

A
For many years, I was convinced that my suffering was due to my size. I believed that when the weight disappeared, it would take away old wounds, hurts and rejections with it.
Many weight-conscious people also mistakenly believe that changing our bodies will fix everything. Perhaps our worst mistake is believing that being thin equals being loved, being special, and being cherished. We fancy what it will be like when we reach the long-awaited goal .We work very hard to realize this dream. Then, at last, we find ourselves there.
But we often gain back what we have lost. Even so, we continue to believe that next time it will be different. Next time, we will keep it off. Next time, being thin will finally fulfill its promise of everlasting happiness, self-worth, and, of course, love.
It took me a long while to realize that there was something more for me to learn about beauty. Beauty standards vary with culture. In Samoa a woman is not considered attractive unless she weighs more than 200 pounds. More importantly, if it’s happiness that we want, why not put our energy there rather than on the size of our bodies Why not look inside Many of us strive hard to change our bodies, but in vain. We have to find a way to live comfortably inside our bodies and make friends with and love ourselves. When we change our attitudes toward ourselves, the whole world changes.
The passage tries to highlight the importance of .
A. body size B. attitudes toward life C. culture difference D. different beauty standards
What does the word “everything” in paragraph 2 mean
A. All the problems. B. All the properties.
C. The whole world. D. The absolute truth.
What can be inferred about the author
A. The author is a Samoan.
B. The author succeeded in losing weight.
C. The author has been troubled by her/his weight.
D. The author probably got wounded in wars or accidents.
According to the author, what is the common view of those who have lost some weight first and gained it back later
A. The feel angry about the regained weight.
B. They are indifferent to the regained weight.
C. They feel optimistic about future plans on weight control.
D. They think they should give up their future plans on weight control.
Which of the following do you think can be the best title
A. A Smaller-size Me B. Changing Our Bodies

The famous pilot Jackie Cochran was born in the south as Bessie Lee Pittman. Her family was so poor that Cochran often had to do without basic necessities. In her autobiography, she wrote that she did not own a pair of shoes until she was eight years old and that she wore dresses made of flour sacks. Fortunately, Cochran was taken under the wing of a beauty-shop owner when she was only a child and quickly mastered her craft. By the time she was 13, Cochran was cutting hair full-time.
Cochran was determined to make a better life for herself and to help others who had been forced to live in poverty. Cochran recalled seeing three children living in horrible conditions. “There I was with neither the strength nor the money to do the smallest fraction of what needed to be done to make those lives better,” she said. By giving people new haircuts, she felt that she could at least make people happy for a while but she wanted to do much more.
When she was only 15, Cochran moved to New York City, where there were better-paying jobs. She worked as a hairstylist and her services were soon in demand. At this time, she changed her name to Jackie Cochran, a name she felt better suited her new occupation.
In time, Cochran was hired at a salon in the Saks Fifth Avenue department store. This job paid very well and Cochran became immensely popular among her customers. Some of them even paid her to travel with them! It was during one of these trips that she met Floyd Bostwick Odlum, a man who would later become her husband. Cochran told Odlum that she dreamed of starting her own cosmetics company, and he supported her. While she did not have a formal education, Cochran was a quick learner and had a keen business sense. Her husband encouraged her to learn to fly a plane. He thought that this was the best way for her to travel from coast to coast selling her cosmetics. If she learned to fly a plane, she could travel much more quickly than her competitors.
After only three weeks of instruction, Cochran was granted her pilot’s license, and she was completely attracted! She later said that, after flying for the first time, her career as a beautician officially ended and her career as a pilot began. She had discovered that flying was her true passion. While she continued to run her company, she competed in flying contests. She placed first in the women’s division of the Bendix Race, an important flying contest, and third overall. In time, she set a national airspeed record. She flew from New York to Miami in four hours, 12 minutes, and 27 seconds-over 204 miles an hour!
Cochran sought to help American troops during World War II. She believed that, if more women learned to fly, they could take the places of male pilots who were needed to fight in the war. She presented her idea to the U.S. government, and government officials asked her to lead the Women’s air Force Service Pilots, more commonly called the WASP. Over one thousand WASP flew planes overseas, where these planes could be used in the war. They tested new planes and supported the military by carrying supplies. Cochran became the first woman who had not been enlisted in the service to be awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Medal.
After this, Cochran continued setting flying records for both speed and height. In 1953, she became the first woman to break the sound barrier, which meant that she had flown faster than the speed of sound. Throughout her life, Cochran received hundreds of awards. She used her wealth and fame to help many people improve their lives and reach their goals. Jackie Cochran wrote that, while she had been born with nothing, she “was determined to travel with the wind and the stars.”
The author most likely wrote this passage to _______.
