For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone’s life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression“get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instesd of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted. Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy. Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.
“Out in the cold”means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise —he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
6. How many expressions are related to cold that are mentioned in the passage
A.3 B.4 C.6 D.7
7.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by“_______ ”.
A.I give him the cold shoulder B.I think he is a cold-blooded man
C.I think he is a cold fish D.I’m likely to get cold feet
8.If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say ______ .
A.she is a cold-blooded killer B.she gets cold feet
C.she is a cold fish D.she is out in the cold
Which one would you pick to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy
A.cold-blooded B.cold shoulder C.cold feet D.cold-hearted
9.What is the topic of the passage
A.The relationship between cold and our body B.Some expressions about friendship
C.Some expressions connected with cold D.How cold weather comes into being

BEIJING—Apple Inc is one step closer to beginning sales of iPad2 tablet computers with cellular network compatibility (兼容) for the first time in the Chinese mainland, where the consumer-electronics giant is in the midst of an aggressive expansion.
According to China’s Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center, a device by Apple with third-generation high-speed wireless data capabilities was issued the network access license needed for the company to begin official sales in China. The device, listed under model number “A1396”, is compatible with the 3G standard WCDMA, and would work with the cellular network operated by Apple’s local iPhone partner, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd.
China Unicom declined to comment.
Apple already offers the 3G iPad2 in Hong Kong through its partners, but currently only offers Wi-Fi versions of the device in the Chinese mainland.Still, consumers in China, which according to research firm IDC surpassed the US as the world’s largest PC market in the second quarter, have been purchasing 3G tablets through unofficial channels.
Separately, Apple spokeswoman Carolyn Wu said Sept 6 that the company’s first Hong Kong store, set to open this quarter, will be located in the city’s central shopping and business district in the International Finance Center’s upscale (高档的) IFC mall, a commercial center and sightseeing spot along the city’s waterfront.Wu also said that Apple is planning a new store in Shanghai later this quarter, which will be its biggest store in China. She declined to give more details or to comment on the 3G iPad2.
Apple currently has four full-service Apple stores in the mainland, which receive the most traffic of any Apple stores in the world. The company otherwise relies on resellers to get its products into the market.
The new stores reflect Apple’s confidence in rising demand for its products such as smart phones and tablet computers.Sales in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan helped boost (增长) the company’s third-quarter results, newly appointed Chief Executive Tim Cook said in July.China revenue (收益) surged (激增) six-fold to about $3.8 billion during the three months ended June 25.
“This has been a substantial (重大) opportunity for Apple and I firmly believe that we’re just scratching the surface right now,” Cook said at the time, referring to strong sales in China.“I see an incredible opportunity for Apple there.”

Car crashes are the top killer of American teenagers. Most of the crashes result from distracted driving not paying attention to the road.
Ryan Didone was a fifteen-year-old passenger in a car that hit a tree.He was one of the nation's more than thirty thousand victims of traffic crashes in 2008.Nearly four thousand deaths, about twelve percent, involved drivers aged fifteen to twenty.Ryan's father, Thomas Didone, is a police captain in Montgomery County, Maryland. He said, "It was an inexperienced," immature driver who felt that he was invincible(不可战胜的), driving at night with a carload of kids.He was distracted, he was going too fast, and it ended up causing one death and some upsetting experiences and tragedy for the rest of the community."
Jim Jennings from the Allstate Insurance Company said "The number one cause of distracted-driving accidents is the mobile phone.Talking on the phone or reaching for it is like drinking four beers and driving. If you're texting while driving, you are twenty-three times more likely to get into an accident than somebody who isn't.
Reaching for a cell phone when it's going off, you're nine times more likely to get into an accident than normally driving," The insurance industry recently held a safety event near Washington for teen drivers.
At first, nineteen-year-old Kevin.Schumann easily avoided large, inflatable dolls thrown in front of the car to represent children. He also avoided orange cones representing the edge of the road. Then, as part of the test,he started texting. He hit several cones and at least one doll.
Debbie Pickford from the Allstate Insurance Company said, "Teens are especially at risk from distracted driving—and not just because they lack experience on the roads. What we know from research on teen brain development, is that teens don't really have fully developed brains until they are twenty-five years old. You put those two things together and you get a much, much higher risk.

It was a very different school from those in China. You're not met by imposing doors and concrete walls, and the buildings were inviting. On the front of the main building was inscribed “Lee Elementary School, 1904.” Wow! I knew it was an old school. Surrounding the main building were five trailers(拖车式活动房屋). One of them was my classroom, 5T. The “T” stood for Mrs. Toalson, my 5th grade teacher.
Mrs Toalson showed me to my seat. A girl sitting at my table greeted me. Her name was Regina, and she was a blonde girl from Ukraine. Her eyes were like diamonds, and we had met at a party two days before.
During my first morning, we had math class, PE and science. We didn’t even have a break! I wondered why Mrs Toalson said to us: “Guys, line up for the bathroom break please!” All the kids stood up and went outside.
I didn’t know what “bathroom break” meant. Was it break time Lunch time I was confused. Nevertheless, we followed Mrs. Toalson to the main building. We sat in the hallway across from the bathroom. In Chinese, “bathroom” means the WC, and a “break” means having a rest! Gosh, I thought that was weird and why did we have to go to the bathroom together
“Mary and Regina, you may go.” When we heard Mrs. Toalson, we went into the bathroom. The bathroom was clean, and it smelled like perfume. I asked Regina what if someone wanted to go to the bathroom during class time. She told me that there was a special pass called a “bathroom pass.” All you had to do was raise your hand with the pass to let Mrs. Toalson know you need to go to the bathroom. Then you would be permitted to go.
At 3:30pm, school ended for the day. Students put their textbooks in their cabinets and lined up in front of the change room, where they collected their backpacks and coats. As they walked out of the door, each student said “Good bye” and gave Mrs. Toalson a high five.
“Did you have a good day today ” Mrs. Toalson asked me as she hugged me goodbye.
“Sure!” I nodded.

Vans, Keds, Dollies—they sound like the names of rock bands, but if you have teenagers, you’ll know they’re actually the latest in teenage footwear.
But experts are now warning that the current shoe fashions will be causing teenagers discomfort in the short term and storing up years of foot, knee and back pain in the future.
Here, the experts identify the problems caused by teenagers’ shoe choice.
KEDS/VANS
Slip-on shoes with elastic(弹性的)sides are particularly popular among teenage boys-with Keds and Vans the most sought-after brands.
The main problem is that they are just too flat—so flat that the heel, which strikes the ground first, also becomes damaged and painful.
BALLET PUMPS
The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes. The problem is partly their flatness, as with Keds and Vans. However ballet pumps, which have no string or heel, have other specific problems.
“As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on the toes to keep the shoe on, causing an awkward gait(步法),this leads to short-and long-term problems such as calluses(茧子),heel and knee pain.”
WEDGES AND STILETTOS
These shoes can also cause problems with gait, They may look good, but the heels on these are so high they can force the wearer’s body weight forward, making them very unstable.
Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of women with constant back pain.
SCHOOL SHOES
So what do podiatrists(足科医生)have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear
Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep toe-box that does not press the toes, such as Clark’s, Marks & Spencer or Rhino.
If your teen insists on wearing ‘bad’ shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics(矫形器)in the shoes. These support and correct the movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrist, can often transform their walk and halt the damage.
6 . Of all the shoes mentioned in the passage, which can cause the worst problems
A. Marks & Spencer. B. Wedges & Stilettos.
C. Keds and Vans. D. Ballet Pumps.

The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful, says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses (冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral freedom.
A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad. Keep cool, says George Herbert, for fierceness (狂怒) makes error a fault.
To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. Anger, says Pythagoras, brings with folly ( 愚蠢 ) and ends with regret. You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.
Self-control is man’s last greatest victory.
If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.
11. What does the reader learn from the first paragraph
A. The greatest victory for a man is to conquer everything except himself.
B. One’s moral freedom is based on the control of himself.
C. To control oneself is the most difficult in one’s life.
D. If a person is too stubborn, he will feel most shameful.
12. What is the correct interpretation of “Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad ” in paragraph 2
A. If the gods want to kill you, they make you crazy first.
B. If you always lose your temper, you will soon be finished.
C. If you cannot control yourself, you will become crazy.
D. If you are mad, you will be punished by the gods.

There is nothing in the Hippocratic Oath that tells doctors what to do when they make a mistake with a patient. Nor is there much on this subject in medical school curriculums or in training programs.
But there should be.
Much was made of the Institute of Medicine’s 1999 report that 44,000 to 98,000 people die each year in hospitals from preventable medical errors, many of them made by doctors.
The report stated much first-hand information to address the problem, but there was little discussion about how doctors, when they have made mistakes, should deal with their patients,
Everyone assumes that the ever-present threat of accusation has made doctors more anxious about admitting error, and no doubt it has, But doctors have always been tight-lipped about their mistakes, in part to preserve an illusion(幻觉,错误的信仰) of medical omnipotence(全能)
Studies suggest that patients are less likely to accuse doctors when they apologize for mistakes, and many hospitals now encourage their physicians to admit their errors. According to an supportive group called The Sorry Works! Coalition, 16 states have already passed laws giving doctors legal immunity(饶恕) for their apologies to patients.
Of course, there are plenty of doctors with a nice bedside manner who can get away with bad treatment. How else to explain patients who often line up in court to support doctors accused of malpractice(失职)?
The surprising truth is that many patients have a hard time knowing whether they are really getting good medical care.
Because so many diseases change randomly over time, patients sometimes spontaneously(自发的) improve despite improper treatment. On the other hand, a patient who receives exemplary medical care may fare badly(情况不好) simply because the illness is hard to treat. In other words, doctors are often praised or blamed, when the outcome is in fact a chance event.
Many, perhaps even most, medical errors probably have little ill effect and go unnoticed by patients. Many lawyers would disagree, but doctors ought to let their patients know when they’ve made a mistake; it humanizes them and builds trust.
16. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE
A. The doctor made the mistake deliberately so they do not apologize.
B. Doctors never tell the patient they have made a mistake.
C. The patients won’t forgive the doctor if he make the mistake.
D. The patient will usually forgive the doctor when the mistake are not intentional.
17. What does the sentence “But there should be” mean in the second paragraph
A. But there should be more subjects in medical school.
B. But there should be something more specific in the Oath.
C. But the doctor should not make any mistake.
D. But there should be something to tell the doctor what to do when they make a mistake.
18. What will patients most possibly do when a doctor makes a mistake
A. They will sue(控告) the doctor.
B. They will let it go.
C. They will be more willing to forgive if the doctor apologizes.
D. They will beat the doctor.
19 What is NOT true according to the passage
A. Many states have legally encouraged the doctors to admit their fault.
B. Medical errors are often ignored by the patients.
C. The behavior that the doctor apologizes can build trust between the patients and the doctor.
D. It is easy for patients to know whether they are under a good treatment.
20. What is the author’s attitude toward the opinion that the doctor should apologize when he makes a mistake
A. Supportive B. Critical C. Indifferent D. Neutral

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. For example, to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt (柏油) roads
Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up.The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside.
The heat-collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground.
When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 meters lies a natural aquifer (蓄水层) into which several heat exchangers (交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the ground-water, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store.
In winter, the working system is changed slightly.Water is pumped through the heat exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up.After performing that task, it is pumped under the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.

2.For what purpose are the diving pipes used
A.To absorb heat from the sun. B.To store heat for future use.

A.some pipes have to be re-arranged in winter
B.the system can do more than warming up the building
C.the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surface
D.less heat may be collected in winter than in summer

For years my husband, John, and I had dreamed of taking our three kids to Disney World. We'd planned our trip down to the last detail and dollar. But in Georgia, halfway there, our car broke down.
At a garage, the mechanic promised our Mercury Sable would be repaired by the next week.Meanwhile, John tried to find us a rental car. After many phone calls, John finally found a car.Luckily, our auto club would pick up the tab.We ended up arriving there three hours behind schedule. We tried every ride and met Mickey.
At the end of the long weekend we called the garage to check on our car.It turned out that the mechanic hadn't even looked at it yet! John got on the phone again. He found it would cost more than $ l, 100 to rent a car to drive home. That plus a plane ticket for him to go pick up our own car and we'd be out over $2,000!
I wailed(痛哭) and asked John, "What are we going to do " He said, "It'll work out." John encouraged me not to lose heart and he insisted on trying to find a way out.Amazingly, John found a car transport company that had a car we could drive home, paying only for gas! But all the way home I couldn't stop thinking about the money we'd still need for John's trip back to the garage and another long driving home.
When we got home, the high school student who had fed our cats asked how our trip was.I gave him the rundown, "Things worked out okay except that our car's still stuck in Georgia." "No problem," he said."I'm heading to Florida for a spring break with my parents. We'll be glad to stop in Georgia on the way back and pick up your car."
We ended up spending only $50 more than we'd budgeted. The next week, our car was back, and I had a new understanding of dealing with trouble.Whatever happens, if you never give up, a good solution will come out at last.

With a 4 million ITV contract(合同) in her pocket and an engagement (婚约) to her England footballer boyfriend, it's been a good year for Christine Bleakley.Perhaps it's no wonder, as the TV presenter is 31, the age at which women are the most attractive, according to a survey.
While the average British woman of 31 may be married with a child, the survey noted they are at a wonderful age because they have not only youthful beauty but also more confidence and a better sense of style than flesh-faced teenagers.
Some 70 percent of more than 2,000 men and women surveyed considered confidence as a key factor in making a woman attractive, ahead of the 67 percent who included physical beauty and 47 percent who looked for a sense of style.Almost two thirds of the women agreed with the opinion "With age, comes beauty", and over half said that as they age they do away with their insecurities and feel more beautiful, while 55 percent felt they knew the best make-up to wear.
Self-confidence varied widely across the country in the survey: London women emerged as the most confident about their looks, with 37 percent describing themselves as beautiful, compared with just 28 percent of Welsh women.Meanwhile, East Midlands women spend the most on beauty programs — 129.69 monthly—compared with a national average of 105.50.
The research was carried on for TV shopping channel QVC to mark the launch of its "Beauty Month".QVC marketing director Sue Leeson said: "This research shows what many have always suspected — real beauty is about more than just good looks but a combination of confidence, style and personality, too.”

Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out-patients at the clinic.
One summer evening as I was fixing supper, there was a knock at the door.I opened it to see a truly awful looking man—no taller than my eight-year-old son—I thought as I stared at the shriveled (皱缩的)body. But the shocking thing was his face—twisted from swelling.
He told me he'd been hunting for a room since noon but with no success."I guess it's my face…, but my doctor says with a few more treatments …”
I told him we would find him a bed. When I had finished the dishes, he told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children, and her husband, who was hopelessly disabled from a back injury. He didn't tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence began with a thanks to God for a blessing. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer.
The next morning before he left for his bus, he asked if he could come back and stay the next time he had a treatment.I told him he was welcome to come again.
In the years he came to stay overnight with us, there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden.
When I received these little gifts, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning."Did you keep that awful looking man last night I turned him away. You can lose roomers by accommodating such people!"
Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice. But oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their illnesses would have been easier to bear.I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what it was to accept the bad without complaint and the good with gratitude.

Review
When I first laid eyes on this book and its title.Teach Yourself PHP in 10 minutes, my first thought was that I was going to see this.So I opened it up and figured I’d look through it for ten minutes and see what would hit me.Well, 10 minutes turned into 20, 20 into 30 and 30 into a valuable resource that sits on my desk.
Not only are the lessons within brief, but they are very easy to understand, well presented and very easy to understand for the beginners. Each lesson comes with tips to point out shortcuts, cautions to help you avoid common mistakes and notes to additional information. This book can be used in two ways, as a reference or as a complete tutorial on PHP basics. That alone is something that is very rare in teaching type books these days.
Some of the more valuable and informative lessons will take you into the areas of:
—Strings and variables
—Processing HTML forms
—Controlling and filtering data
—User authentication
—Cookies and sessions
—Security practices
—Configuring PHP and more!!!
The book is pretty basic for experienced PHP coders, but for new or intermediate users this book is worth more than the small $19.99 CAN suggested price.Although the cover suggests it covers PHP 5.0, the coding found within also applies to PHP 4.X
Conclusion
This book completely surprised me with its value and does indeed teach you in ten minutes what other books claim to do in 24 hours.Full marks to author Chris Newman for this handy guide.

Dear all,
Please read Professor Hume's email about his next lecture on Rosa Parks.
Susan Miller
Secretary
**********************************
Dear Susan,
Please forward this message to students of my history class.
Besides the life story of Rosa Parks in the textbook, the students are also required to read the passage below and some related stories that can be borrowed from the school library.
Ted Hume
The early experiences of Rosa Parks( 1913-2005), long known as the "mother of the civil rights movement", were not different from those of many African-Americans at that time. The black woman, however, turned the course of American history in December 1955 when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man."By sitting down", remarked John Lewis, "she was standing up for all Americans."
Among the numerous awards Parks received in her life were the Presidential Medal of Freedom(1996)and the Congressional Gold Medal(1999).
Parks died on Oct.24, 2005.At St.Paul A.M.E.Church in Montgomery, a large crowd including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice celebrated her life.Rice said she and others, who grew up when the political activities of Parks held public attention, might not have realized her impact(影响)on their lives, "but I can honestly say that without Mrs.Parks, I probably would not be standing here as Secretary of State."

If you were to come up with a list of organizations whose failures had done the most damage to the American economy in recent years, you would probably have to start with the Wall Street firms that brought us the financial crisis. From there, you might, move on to the automakers in Detroit(底特律).
But I would suggest that the list should also include a less obvious nominee: public education. At its top level, the American system of higher education may be the best in the world.Yet in terms of its core mission—turning teenagers into educated college graduates—much of the system is failing.
The United States does a good job enrolling(招生)teenagers in college, but only half of the students who enroll end up with a bachelors degree.
So identifying the causes of the college dropout crisis in the world's largest economy matters enormously, and a new book called "Crossing the Finish Line" tries to do precisely that. Its authors are economists William Bowen and Michael McPherson, and a doctoral candidate Matthew Chingos. The first problem they diagnose is something they call under-matching.It refers to students who choose not to attend the best college they can get into. They instead go to a less selective one; perhaps one that is closer to home or less expensive.About half of the low-income students with a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in high school and an SAT score of at least 1,200 do not attend the best college they could have."I was really astonished by the degree to which well-qualified students from poor families under-matched," said Mr. Bowen.
In fact, well-off students attend the colleges that do the best job of producing graduates.Meanwhile, lower-income students—even when they are better qualified—often go to colleges that excel(擅长)in producing drop-outs."It's really a waste," Mr. Bowen said, "and a big problem for the country." As the authors point out, the only way to lift the college graduation rate significantly is to lift it among poor and working-class students.Instead, it appears to have fallen. What can be done Money is clearly part of the answer.

Scientists have long understood the key role that oceans play in regulating the Earth’s climate.Oceans cover 70 percent of the globe and store a thousand times more heat than the atmosphere does. What’s newer is the understanding of how this key component of our climate system responds to global warming.
A brake on global warming—for now
One of the ocean’s most important climate functions is absorbing heat and carbon dioxide (CO2), one of the gases that cause global warming.Acting as a heat sponge (海绵), the oceans have absorbed huge amounts of heat and CO2 in the last forty years.
The most recent scientific report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) also notes with concern that the ocean is acidifying because of increased absorption of atmospheric CO2, and thus causing a threat for shell-forming species.Sharp increases in carbon dioxide levels will cause further acidification of the ocean.
Currents distributing heat
Another important role the oceans play is that of distributor.Oceans deliver heat and life-sustaining nutrients around the globe.Just as blood vessels bring oxygen and nutrients to cells in the human body, the ocean’s currents carry oxygen, nutrients and heat throughout the Earth. The ocean distributes 25 to 50 percent of the energy the planet receives from the sun.For example, the Gulf Stream carries heat across the Atlantic. This warm current gives northwestern Europe a milder climate than it would normally have so far north.A change to the ocean’s circulation (循环) patterns could throw Europe into a colder period, even as the rest of world experiences warmer temperatures.
1.We can infer from the passage that _____.
A.the oceans cause global warming B.the oceans stop global warming
C.the oceans release nutrients and heat D.the ocean ecosystems face more dangers
2.From the passage we can learn that the ocean’s currents _____.
A.produce oxygen and nutrients everywhere
B.absorb 25~50% of the energy from the sun
C.distribute heat and nutrients around
D.change the ocean’s circulation patterns
3.Which of the following is NOT the result of the ocean absorbing heat and carbon dioxide
A.It causes further acidification. B.It affects shell-forming species.
C.It makes the atmosphere hotter. D.It regulates the Earth’s climate.
4.This passage mainly talks about ______.
A.the roles of oceans B.global warming
C.ocean currents D.carbon dioxide

Maps and statistics can tell us a lot about where a country is headed. Take the US Census Bureau's latest findings on American cities. They show that for the first time since 1900, Detroit is not on the list of the Top 10 most populous US cities. In its place is San Jose, California.
"It's part of a pattern for the heavily industrialized cities," says Dana Johnson, an economist in Detroit. "There's been an ongoing dynamic (变化) here of people fleeing the city looking for better schools, better lifestyles, better services."
Detroit is hardly alone. After World War II, the US was the world's leading manufacturer. Cars, televisions, toys, and clothing made in America were exported around the world. As a result, the well-paid factory workers formed the backbone of a rising middle class. In the last three decades, the US economy has panies have moved factories overseas to take advantage of lower wages in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.
Where are people who leave the northeast and midwest going They are moving south and west, another broad trend. In general, people are moving to where it's warmer, less expensive and less crowded, or where jobs are more plentiful in growing service industries like health care, in the technology sector, or in factories that moved from the northeast or midwest.
In a sense, the computer chips of San Jose, the new 10th largest city, in the heart of what is known as Silicon Valley, have replaced the sheet metal and molten steel of Detroit as the symbol of American economic power.
5.The main difficulty that Detroit is now facing is _____.
A.the factory closings and huge job losses
B.many people’s moving to the south and west
C.the poor quality of the automobile
D.the lack of the computer chips
6.Which of the following isn’t the trend of the change
A.The decline of the manufacturing economy.
B.Companies’ moving overseas.
C.The end of the US cities’ development.
D.The migration of Americans to the south and west.
7.Which of the following is not true about San Jose
A.The newly-listed 10th largest city.
B.The heart of Silicon Valley.
C.The symbol of American economic power.
D.The centre of the heavily industrialized cities.
8.Which statement is not correct according to the passage
A.Detroit has been on the list of the Top 10 most populous US cities for over a century.
B.People immigrate south and west to take advantage of lower wages there.
C.The US was an important exporting country in the middle of the last century.
D.The US economy now is not as prosperous as 30 years ago.
C
Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of about one per week. Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicant is lying, most colleges are reluctant to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them "impostors(骗子)"; another refers to them as "special cases". One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made by "no such people". To avoid outright(彻底的)lies, some job-seekers claim that they "attending" means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that "being associated with" a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century—that’s when they began keeping records, anyhow. If you don’t want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony diploma.
One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of nonexistent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from "Smoot State University". The prices increase rapidly for a degree from the "University of Purdue". As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana is properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.
9. The main idea of this passage is that ________ .
A. employers are checking more closely on applicants now
B. lying about college degrees has become a widespread problem
C. college degrees can now be purchased easily
D. employers are no longer interested in college degrees
10. We can infer from the passage that ________ .
A. performance is a better judge of ability than a college degree
B. experience is the best teacher
C. past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees do
D. a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job competition
11. This passage implies that ________ .
A. buying a false degree is not moral
B. personnel officers only consider applicants from famous schools
C. most people lie on applications because they were dismissed from school
D. society should be greatly responsible for lying on applications
12. The word "phony" (Line 13, Para. 2) means ________ .
A. thorough B. ultimate C. false D. decisive
D
What’s your idea of a good time What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look like ants
It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer. Why Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals.
Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular festival in the UK.It began in 1970 and the first festival was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an admission price of £1 — the ticket included free milk from the farm.
Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength — in 2004 one hundred and fifty thousand fans attended, paying £112 each for a ticket to the three-day event.Tickets for the event sold out within three hours.Performers included superstars, such as Paul McCartney and James Brown, as well as new talent, like Franz Ferdinand and Joss Stone.
Although many summer festivals are run on a profit-making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event, donating millions of pounds to local and international charities.
Glastonbury is not unique in using live music to raise money to fight global poverty. In July of this year, the Live 8 concerts were held simultaneously (同时) in London, Paris, Rome and Berlin.Superstars such as Madonna, Sir Elton John and Stevie Wonder performed in order to highlight international poverty and debt.
13.What does the author mean by saying “the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength”

B.Great efforts have been made to hold the festival.
C.The festival has brought in a large amount of money.
D.There have been thousands of fans attending the festival.
14.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.The Glastonbury Festival is run on a profit-making basis.
B.Tickets for the 2004 Glastonbury Festival were in great demand despite the high price.
C.Both James Brown and Joss Stone were born in poor families.
D.In the 1970 Glastonbury Festival, one could have lunch on the farm for free.
15.We can learn from the last paragraph that _____.

B.the Live 8 concerts are held every year in London
C.London, Paris, Rome and Berlin are famous for outdoor music festivals
D.some superstars are concerned about global poverty
16.What is the best title for the passage
A.How to have a good time B.Charity events around the world
C.The Glastonbury Festival D.Superstars’ performances in charity events

Lead deposits, which accumulated in soil and snow during the 1960’s and 70’s, were primarily the result of leaded gasoline emissions originating in the United States. In the twenty years that the Clean Air Act has mandated unleaded gas use in the United States, the lead accumulation worldwide has decreased significantly.
A study published recently in the journal Nature shows that air-borne leaded gas emissions from the United States were the leading contributor to the high concentration of lead in the snow in Greenland. The new study is a result of the continued research led by Dr. Charles Boutron, an expert on the impact of heavy metals on the environment at the National Center for Scientific Research in France. A study by Dr. Boutron published in 1991 showed that lead levels in arctic snow were declining.
In his new study, Dr. Boutron found the ratios of the different forms of lead in the leaded gasoline used in the United States were different from the ratios of European, Asian and Canadian gasolines and thus enabled scientists to differentiate (区分) the lead sources. The dominant lead ratio found in Greenland snow matched that found in gasoline from the United States.
In a study published in the journal Ambio, scientists found that lead levels in soil in the Northeastern United States had decreased markedly since the introduction of unleaded gasoline.
Many scientists had believed that the lead would stay in soil and snow for a longer period.
The authors of the Ambio study examined samples of the upper layers of soil taken from the same sites of 30 forest floors in New England, New York and Pennsylvania in 1980 and in 1990. The forest environment processed and redistributed the lead faster than the scientists had expected.
Scientists say both studies demonstrate that certain parts of the ecosystem respond rapidly to reductions in atmospheric pollution, but that these findings should not be used as a license to pollute.
17. The study published in the journal Nature indicates that ________.
A. the Clean Air Act has not produced the desired results
B. lead deposits in arctic snow are on the increase
C. lead will stay in soil and snow longer than expected
D. the US is the major source of lead pollution in arctic snow
18. Lead accumulation worldwide decreased significantly after the use of unleaded gas in the US _____ .
A. was discouraged B. was enforced by law
C. was prohibited by law D. was introduced
19. How did scientists discover the source of lead pollution in Greenland
A. By analyzing the data published in journals like Nature and Ambio.
B. By observing the lead accumulations in different parts of the arctic area..
C. By studying the chemical elements of soil and snow in Northeastern America.
D. By comparing the chemical compositions of leaded gasoline used in various countries.
20. The authors of the Ambio study have found that ________.
A. forests get rid of lead pollution faster than expected
B. lead accumulations in forests are more difficult to deal with
C. lead deposits are widely distributed in the forests of the US
D. the upper layers of soil in forests are easily polluted by lead emissions

A yearly list of the best and worst places to be a mother and child rates the United States 11th, behind Britain. Scandinavian countries are at the top. Sweden is number one. Denmark is second. Finland is third. Save the Children, an American-based humanitarian organization, compared conditions in 110 countries. The report came out last week.
22.
At the bottom of the list, Mali and Burkina Faso share last place. Just above them are Ethiopia, Chad, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania. Gambia and Eritrea are also in the bottom ten, along with two Asian countries: Nepal and Cambodia. Cambodia is tied with Eritrea in 100th place.
23 .
Save the Children based its report on six conditions related to the health and security of women. These include the risk of early death, and the rate of use of modern birth-control methods. Another measure was the percentage of births with the aid of trained medical workers. Still another was the percentage of pregnant women with a shortage of iron in the blood. The study also examined reading levels among women and the involvement of women in national government. There are some conditions related to the education of both women and children.
24.
Save the Children has published a report on the "State of the World's Mothers" for six years now. This year the group included a progress report on education for girls. Researchers examined progress made over the past ten years in 71 developing countries. The report says Bolivia, Kenya, Cameroon and Bangladesh have made the most progress in girls' education. Listed at the bottom are Rwanda, Iraq, Malawi and Eritrea. Worldwide, the report says, 58 million girls are out of school.
25.
Charles MacCormack is head of Save the Children. He says many children in the world are lucky just to survive the first five years of life. But Mr MacCormack calls the situation far from hopeless. He notes that world leaders have agreed on eight goals to reduce poverty, save lives and increase security by 2015.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer a chance to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child-care.
These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A. red one stands for a living mother. A. white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services(宗教仪式)to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit their graves. On these days, families get together at home and in restaurants. They often have outdoor BBQs for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.
Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephones companies and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.
1. Which is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents
A. Parents bring children B. Parents give love and care to children
C. Parents educate children to be good persons.
D. Parents pass away before children grow up

A. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.
B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past
C. Not all the children respect their parents
D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home
3. Which do you think is right about “carnation”
A. It only has two kinds of color.
B. It is a special kind of clothes people wear on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.
C. It’s a kind of flower showing love and best wishes.
D. People can wear carnations only on the second Sunday in May.
4. What do you think “florists” do
A. They sell flowers B. They made bread or pastry
C. They offer enough room for having family parties.
D. They sell special clothes for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
B
Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time; if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle…They compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake. If it is a matter in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time in such routine(日常的)work Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what he does not know.
5. According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by_____.
A. listening to skilled people’s advice. B. asking older people many questions
C. making mistakes and having them corrected D. doing what other people do
6. Which of the following does the writer think teachers should NOT do .
A. Give children correct answers B. Allow children to mark mistakes.
C. Point out children’s mistakes to them. D. Let children mark their own work

C. correct children’s mistakes as soon as possible
D. give children more book knowledge
8. The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are____
A. different from learning other skills B. the same as learning skills
C. more important than other skills D. not really important skills
C
I entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view. I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a “complicated idea” until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either its irony(嘲讽)or its very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times.(How, after all, could one read a book more than once )And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length.(Could anything shorter be a book )
There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor at a nearby state college. The article had a list of the “hundred most important books of Western Civilization.” “More than anything else in my life,” the professor told the reporter with finality(firmly), “these books have made me all that I am.” That was the kind of words I couldn’t ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition(迷信)of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list
9. On hearing the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought _______.
A. one must read as many books as possible
B. a student should not have a complicated idea
C. it was impossible for one to read two thousand books
D. students ought to make a list of the books they had read
10. While at high school, the writer _______.
A. had plans for reading B. learned to educate himself
C. only read books over 100 pages D. read only one book several times
11. The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to _______.
A. explain why it was included in the list
B. describe why he seriously crossed it off the list
C. show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understand
D. prove that he understood most of it because he had looked at every word
12. The writer provides two book lists to _______.
A. show how he developed his point of view
B. tell his reading experience at high school
C. introduce the two persons' reading methods
D. explain that he read many books at high school

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
13. The writer is in favor of the view that man’s intelligence is given to him____________.
A. at birth B. through education
C. both at birth and through education D. neither at birth nor through education
14. If a child is born with low intelligence, he can_____________________.
A. become a genius
B. still become a genius if he should be given special education
C. not reach his intelligence in his life.
D. reach his intelligence limits in rich surroundings
15. The example of the twins going to a university and to a factory separately shows_________.
A. the importance of their intelligence B. the role of environment on intelligence
C. the importance of their positions D. the part that birth plays
16. The best title of the passage can be _______________.
A. Surroundings B. Effect of education
C. Dependence on Environment D. Intelligence

What is the color of the universe Astronomers had not answered this question until two months ago. That is when two American astronomers reported on their study of all the light in the universe. They said that the universe would appear to the human eyes to be a light greenish color.
Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, reported their finding in January. They presented the research at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. They said that finding the color of the universe was not part of their more serious scientific research. They did it for fun.
However, earlier this month, the scientists admitted making a mistake. They said their finding was much more colorful than it should have been. They now say the light from our universe is closer to white. It is more like a milky or creamy white color.
Their study attempted to show what people might see if they could observe the universe from far away. The scientists found the average color by combining light from about two-hundred-thousand star systems. Their information came from an observatory in New South Wales, Australia.
The scientists gave a number value to the colors of the different star systems. Then they added the numbers together and found the average measurement. The scientists used this average to identify the color of the universe. They said it was a very pretty light green. Many newspapers and television stations reported their finding.
Other scientists and color engineers attempted to reproduce the result. Mark Fairchild of the Rochester Institute discovered a mistake in the computer software program used by the Johns Hopkins scientists.
When the mistake was corrected, the results changed. The new color of the universe is much less colorful. It is very close to white.

A.what the color of the universe is
B.the light from our universe is a light greenish color
C.the new color of the universe is much more colorful
D.the finding of the color of the universe is difficult
