Since my husband's death, I have travelled to over 20 countries. The lesson I could learn from my travelling experiences was that we should live in the moment. A woman walking down the street hears a bang. Several moments later, she finds that her boyfriend who walks ahead of her has been shot. About a month later, the woman checks into the emergency room. She says that loud noises from garbage trucks make her feel panic. Her brain has formed a deep and lasting connection between loud sounds and the sight she saw.
In a new study in mice, scientists at Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute showed the brain’s powerful ability to remember and connect events separated in time. The scientists uncovered a surprising system by which the hippocampus (海马体),a brain region important for memory, builds bridges . across time by sending bursts of activity that seem to lack a clear purpose, but in fact make up a complex pattern to help the brain learn connections. The finding? make people have a better understanding of anxiety.
Previous experiments in mice showed that damage to the hippocampus leaves them with trouble learning to connect two events separated by tens of seconds. “The popular view is that cells in the hippocampus keep up a level of activity to connect such events,” said Dr. Ahmed, a professor at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. “Turning these cells off will disrupt learning and memory.”
To test this traditional view, the researchers imaged parts of the hippocampus of mice as they had contact with two different stimuli (刺激物):a normal sound followed by an unpleasant smell. A fifteen-second delay separated the two events. Using advanced machines, the researchers recorded the activity of thousands of neurons (神经细胞), a type of brain cell, in the hippocampus of mice over the course of each test. They found that over time, the mice would show signs of unhappiness when they heard the sound.

English language learning and teaching involve more factors than language rules and phonetic (语音的)development. Language learners who pay no attention to the cultural elements seem to meet many difficulties in understanding what native speakers mean. Cultural education makes language learners know cultural backgrounds easily.
Though culture has always been an element in English language learning, it was during the 1960s when linguists began to place cultural education at the forefront of language learning. And most experts believed that cultural education should focus on learning the culture of the target language. In 1974, teachers started to introduce it into the English language learning classroom. In the 1990s, Michael Byram and Carol Morgan published a report, which showed the importance of knowing the learners’ cultural backgrounds when teachers taught their students to study a foreign language.
For a student whose cultural tradition involves mostly spoken story-telling, reading a text may be a little bit difficult. If the language teacher is unfamiliar with the cultural tradition of this student, he or she may consider the student^ reading trouble as a learning problem. However, it's actually the result of cultural differences.
There are many cultural differences affecting English language learning. The most obvious one is the native language itself. A student who follows basic language and grammar rules from his or her native language will have trouble learning English. Because English may not be translated into his or her native language directly. Another cultural influence is learning or teaching style. All of these may cause different learning results.
Cultural education is the most important step in reducing cultural conflicts (冲突)that may arise in the English language classroom. Teachers should be educated in many kinds of instructions that could respond to any student’s needs. Classroom time should focus on understandable cultural education; lessons about body language, eye contact, academic language and conversational language also should be the most important elements of the curriculum (课程).
12. What can we learn about cultural education in Paragraph 2?
A. It has quite a long history.
B. It faced a lack of teaching resources.
C. It worked better for English learners.
D. It has developed in theory and practice.
13. The example in Paragraph 3 implies that language teachers should .
A. encourage students with learning difficulties more often
B. help students realize the importance of communication
C. learn about students’ cultural language backgrounds
D. set a good learning example for their students
14. What are educators advised to do to apply cultural education in English teaching?
A. Organize colorful after-school activities.
B. Use different forms of language communication.
C. Teach grammar rules through more reading and writing.
D. Find the similarities between English and one’s native language.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Culture impacts language learning.
B. Each culture has its unique features.
C. English teaching methods are changing.
D. People’s learning habits decide their learning abilities.

My children were sitting at the kitchen table, playing a game. They had taken some cards and written a secret word on each one. Without looking at the word on the card, they had to put the card on their foreheads (前额).Then they took turns asking yes-or-no questions until they were able to guess the secret word on their card.
“Is my secret word ‘ fork’?’’ Jordan asked.
“Yes! You got it! You won!” both of his sisters yelled.
Minutes later, my youngest daughter Julia said, “Mommy, mine is really hard.” I nodded sympa-thetically (同情地). The poor girl didn’t stand a chance. The card on her forehead read “love”.
She’d already asked more than a dozen questions, and each answer seemed to confuse her even more. Then, she asked, “Is it invisible (看不见的)?”
Lea and Jordan looked at one another, unsure of how to answer. They asked me. “ Mom, what do you think? Is the word on Julia’s card invisible?”
I paused. Is love invisible? In the game, it obviously was. “Well, yes,the word on Julia’s card is invisible,’’ I said. “We can’t see it in the same way we can see an object like a fork or a bird.”
Poor Julia shook her head. “I still don’t get it.”
I said, “Julia, when I want to show you your word, I make your favorite dinner.”
Julia thought for a minute. “Is my word ‘hungry’?”
I smiled. "No, but that was a good try. If you wanted to show me your word, you would give me a hug or a kiss.”
Julia’ s eyes lit up. “Mom,my word is ‘love’!”
I nodded, and the kids clapped. Then, they chose new cards.
But later, when the kids finished playing the game, Julia came to me and said, “Mom, I think love should never be invisible.” I smiled and nodded my head. Then, I thought about my day and how I spent my time. I had to admit that I was too busy cooking and cleaning to show actual love. But young children didn't appreciate clean floors. They even didn't notice those things, let alone feel loved by them. I decided to change.
Paragraph 1:
I gathered the kids together and told them 1 wanted love to be visible.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next few weeks, the kids and / pulled Several suggestions from the list.

Dear Mr Brown,
Hearing that you have been admitted to hospital recently because of a terrible cold, my classmates and I are all deeply concerned about you.
We all know that you care about our English study. However, you don’t have to worry about that, for another English teacher, Mrs Smith, has been arranged to teach us temporarily while you are absent. And we’ll try our best to work hard with the help of Mrs Smith. Hope you can make a quick recovery from the illness.
Best wishes!

第二节
Paragraph 1:
I gathered the kids together and told them I wanted love to be visible. I really need them to give me some suggestions. I held up a pen and a notebook to show them that I was serious. Then, they actively put forward their suggestions: bake more brownies, have a water balloon fight and so on. Julia gave the most. Soon, I had a list of more than a dozen suggestions. Some were completely possible, and others were really hard. But I had a starting point. I put the list on the fridge and determined to make good use of it.
Paragraph 2:
Over the next few weeks, the kids and I pulled several suggestions from the list. I made more cookies and played more games. I read books and kicked soccer balls. It was a great time. One afternoon, Julia came into the kitchen and told me she was seeing my love. Actually, I didn’t change much. I just did more playing and less cleaning. I’d given them more of my time, and what I’d gotten in return was worth it.
