A
group
of
75
female
volunteers
from
India’s
Odisha
state
has
spent
every
day
of
the
last
20
years
patrolling(巡逻)
a
75-hectare
forest
to
protect
it
from
illegal
woodcutters.
In
1999,
the
eastern
state
of
Odisha
was
hit
by
a
super
cyclone
(超级飓风).
“Our
homes
and
standing
crops
were
destroyed.
There
was
no
food
or
clothing
for
days,
”
52-year-old
Charulata
Biswal,
a
volunteer
forest
protector,
told
Mongabay-India.
“But
we
realized
it
was
because
of
the
surviving
forest
that
many
people
in
Gundalba,
a
small
village,
were
still
alive.
We
promised
we
would
protect
the
forest
in
return
and
restore
the
biodiversity.
”
Groups
of
women
patrol
the
forest
at
least
twice
a
day.
As
they
walk
among
the
trees,
they
blow
their
whistles
and
bang
wooden
sticks
against
tree
trunks.
“We
beat
our
sticks
and
patrol
in
groups
of
10,
”
Biswal
said.
“We
spread
out
inside
the
forest
and
blow
whistles.
Anyone
with
the
intention
to
harm
the
local
biodiversity
will
flee
on
hearing
our
whistle
and
the
banging
of
our
sticks
on
tree
trunks.
”
In
2001,
over
70
women
from
Gundalba
came
together
to
form
the
Women’s
Forest
Protection
Committee.
Apart
from
their
daily
patrols,
they
also
approached
neighboring
villages
that
also
depend
on
the
forest
for
firewood
about
setting
up
a
system
for
sustainability
(可持续性).
For
example,
every
village
is
allowed
to
gather
firewood
from
the
forest
on
a
set
day
of
the
month,
usually
a
few
days
after
another
settlement
has
finished
the
gathering
process.
Over
the
years,
they
have
caught
several
people
cutting
trees
illegally
in
the
forest.
Asked
if
they
have
ever
been
afraid
of
patrolling
the
large
forest
they
said
no.
“The
forest
is
an
extension
of
our
home,
”
Biswal
said.
“Won’t
it
hurt
to
see
your
children
suffer?
This
is
how
a
mother
feels
and
we
are
doing
something
that
comes
to
us
naturally.
”
Thanks
to
the
women’s
efforts,
the
forest
gradually
came
back
to
life.
Birds
started
nesting
in
trees
again
and
the
animals
returned.

shortcomings.
Among

after

Another,
Japan’s

offered

Futurologists
are
making
a
lot
of
predictions
about
our
future
life
and
they
are
predicting
how
we
will
travel,
work
and
live
in
the
next
30
years.
By
2048,
some
futurologists
foresee
that
some
talking
buildings
will
appear
in
our
life.
By
the
middle
of
the
century,
it’s
believed
that
buildings
will
be
able
to
“talk”
to
people
through
various
sensors
when
the
heating
needs
to
be
turned
on.
As
a
result,
there
will
be
no
switches.
Instead,
a
lot
of
networks
will
appear,
which
can
be
compared
to
a
human
nervous
system.
In
the
next
30
years,
buildings
will
be
made
from
concrete
plastics
and
shape-changing
materials.
All
of
them
can
heal
themselves
at
that
time.
As
architects
(建筑师)are
racing
to
develop
the
world’s
tallest
buildings,
there
will
be
a
need
for
new
kinds
of
elevators,
through
which
vehicles
could
even
travel
into
the
buildings.
German
engineers
have
already
started
working
on
such
technology
called
Multi.
By
mid-century,
scientists
believe
that
buildings
will
be
miles
tall.
Some
of
them
may
be
very
large
and
they
can
function
as
small
cities.
By
comparison,
at
present,
the
world’s
tallest
building,
the
Burj
Khalifa
in
Dubai,
measures
829.
8
metres
high.
As
the
future
building
can
rise
through
the
clouds,
their
windows
will
be
replaced
by
virtual
screens.
In
this
way,
people
can
choose
any
view
as
they
like.
At
height
extremes,
a
London
Spaceport
is
also
likely
to
come
into
being
by
2048
as
the
space
industry
develops
very
quickly.
There
is
a
huge
cost
advantage
going
to
space
from
as
high
a
base
as
possible,
so
a
spaceport
is
very
likely
to
be
over
10km
and
even
as
much
as
30
km,
using

B
Part
of
northern
California

A
nearby
town,
Paradise,
was

Nearly

Six

the

most
destructive

California’s
history
have
occurred
in
the
past
decade.
Last
year
was
the
most
destructive
year
on
record,
until
this
year.
Why
is
the
Golden
State
so
flammable?
?
There
are
three
reasons
why
California
has
been
surrounded
by
flames.
First,
the
climate
is
becoming
warmer.
This
has
led
to
snow
melting
earlier,
drier
landscapes
and
a
longer
season
when
fires
are
likely
to
occur.
A
second
reason
is
that
more
people
live
in
flammable
places.
Since
the
1990s
60%
of
new
homes
in
California,
Washington
and
Oregon
have
been
built
in
spaces
next
to
nature.
These
areas,
which
environmentalists
call
the
“wildland-urban
interface”,
are
at
higher
risk
of
wildfire.
A
third
reason
is
that
there
is
more
fuel.
Before
western
settlers
arrived,
fires
used
to
happen
often
and
naturally,
which
made
less
fuel
available
for
future
fires.
For
the
past
century
fires
have
been
controlled
well.
This
has
led
to
a
build-up
of
dry
brush,
and
makes
the
average
wildfire
much
likelier
to
turn
into
a
big
one.
Putting
out
the
flame
is
the
most
immediate
task
for
California,
but
not
the
last.
Many
survivors
will
want
to
rebuild
their
homes
exactly
where
they
were.
Californians
will
also
want
to
ensure
that
utility
companies(公用事业公司)
are
acting
and
investing
responsibly.
Investigations
into
what
caused
the
fire
are
still
going
on,
but
some
reports
suggest
it
may
have
begun
with
sparks
(火花)
from
lines
owned
by
an
electricity
company.
【语篇概述】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了加利福尼亚是一个容易遭受毁灭性火灾的地方,
并给出了原因。
5.
What
may
directly
cause
the
big
fire
in
California?
A.
The
warm
climate.
B.
Living
too
close
to
nature.
C.
Too
much
fuel.
D.
Sparks
from
electric
wire.
【解析】选C。推理判断题。根据文章第四段第一句A
third
reason
is
that
there
is
more
fuel.
和最后一句
This
has
led
to
a
build-up
of
dry
brush,
and
makes
the
average
wildfire
much
likelier
to
turn
into
a
big
one.
可知,
这导致了干灌木丛的堆积,
使得一般的野火更有可能变成一场大火。太多的燃料可能是引起加利福尼亚大火的直接原因。故正确答案为C。

【语篇概述】这是一篇新闻报道。短文报道了澳大利亚的土著人—Rangers,
他们保护环境,
捡拾垃圾,
承担着保护祖先土地的任务,
对他们来说,
保护环境就等于保护他们的历史和他们的文化。少数非土著人也与Rangers一起工作来保护他们的文化。

the
past?
A.
Rubbish
picked
up
by
hand.
B.
Protecting
the
land.
C.
Catching
the
fish
and
seafood.
D.
Invasive
plants
and
animals.
【解析】选C。细节理解题。由第一段“

as
their
ancestors
did.
”可知,
他们像他们的祖先一样,
在星空下吃着篝火煮熟的新鲜的鱼和海鲜。所以澳大利亚土著居民过去过着以捕鱼和打捞海鲜为主的生活。故选C。
2.
What
do
the
Rangers
think
of
cleaning
the

A.
It’s
a
job
of
their

【解析】选D。推理判断题。由第三段“For
a
people
whose
culture
is
strongly
tied
to
the
land,
protecting
the
environment
is
equal
to
preserving
their

mismanagement.
”可知,
成千上万年的传统的土地管理模式结束了,
因此,
这个国家的许多地区现在面临着来自外来动植物物种的入侵、丛林火灾和土地管理不善的严重灾难。所以为什么政府要将土地归还给原住居民是因为被污染的土地需要(他们)更好的管理。故选A。
4.
What
can
we
learn

”可知,
冬季越来越温和,
与寒冷有关的死亡人数可能会减少20000人。然而气温升高,
细菌有可能不再像在寒冷的时期那样会季节性地死亡,
这样疾病会传播得更广泛。所以通过反向推理,
可以判断出寒冷的气温有助于阻止疾病的传播。故选A。
3.

mean?
A.
Dangerous.
B.
Major.
C.
Frequent.
D.

”可知,
一种温和的疟疾有可能在世界上的某些地方形成,
并在每年的4个月内反复出现。所以这种威胁可能每年都有,
而且多达四个月之久,
可见疟疾是频繁爆发的疾病。故判断出第五段中带下划线的“recurring”一词是frequent“频繁的”的意思。故C选项正确。
