Florence
Nightingale
was
born
in
a
rich
family.
When
she
was
young
she
took
lessons
in
music
and
drawing,
and
read
great
books.
She
also
traveled
a
great
deal
with
her
mother
and
father.
As
a
child
she
felt
that
visiting
sick
people
was
both
a
duty
and
a
pleasure.
She
enjoyed
helping
them.
At
last
mind
was
made
up.
“I’m
going
to
be
a
nurse,

she
decided.
“Nursing
isn’t
the
right
work
for
a
lady,

her
father
told
her.
“Then
I
will
make
it
so,

she
smiled.
And
she
went
to
learn
nursing
in
Germany
and
France.
When
she
returned
to
England,
Florence
started
a
nursing
home
for
home.
During
the
Crimean
War
in
1854
she
went
with
a
group
of
thirty
eight
nurses
to
the
front
hospitals.
What
they
saw
there
was
terrible.
Dirt
and
death
were
everywhere
to
be
seen

and
smelled.
The
officer
there
did
not
want
any
woman
to
tell
him
how
to
run
a
hospital,
either.
But
the
brave
nurse
went
to
work.
Florence
used
her
own
money
and
some
from
friends
to
buy
clothes,
beds,
medicine
and
food
for
the
men.
Her
only
pay
was
in
smiles
from
the
lips
of
dying
soldiers.
But
they
were
more
than
enough
for
this
kind
woman.
After
she
returned
to
England,
she
was
honored
for
her
services
by
Queen
Victoria.
But
Florence
said
that
her
work
had
just
begun.
She
raised
money
to
build
the
Nightingale
Home
for
Nurses
in
London.
She
also
wrote
a
book
on
public
health,
which
was
printed
in
several
countries.
Florence
Nightingale
died
at
the
age
of
ninety,
still
trying
to
serve
others
through
her
work
as
a
nurse.
Indeed,
it
is
because
of
her
that
we
honor
nurses
today.

故选A。
B
Have
you
winterized
your
horse
yet?
Even
though
global
warming
may
have
made
our
climate
more
mild,
many
animals
are
still
hibernating(冬眠).
It’s
too
bad
that
humans
can’t
hibernate.
In
fact,
as
a
species,
we
almost
did.
Apparently,
at
times
in
the
past,
peasants
in
France
liked
a
semi-state
of
human
hibernation.
So
writer
Graham
Robb,
a
British
scholar
who
has
studied
the
sleeping
habits
of
the
French
peasants.
As
soon
as
the
weather
turned
cold
people
all
over
France
shut
themselves
away
and
practiced
the
forgotten
art
of
doing
nothing
at
all
for
months
on
end.
In
line
with
this,
Jeff
Warren,
a
producer
at
CBC
Radio’s
The
Current,
tells
us
that
the
way
we
sleep
has
changed
fundamentally
since
the
invention
of
artificial(人造的)
lighting
and
the
electric
bulb.
When
historians
began
studying
texts
of
the
Middle
Ages,
they
noticed
something
referred
to
as
“first
sleep”,
which
was
not
clarified,
though.
Now
scientists
are
telling
us
our
ancestors
most
likely
slept
in
separate
periods.
The
business
of
eight
hours’
uninterrupted
sleep
is
a
modern
invention.
In
the
past,
without
the
artificial
light
of
the
city
to
bathe
in,
humans
went
to
sleep
when
it
became
dark
and
then
woke
themselves
around
midnight.
The
late
night
period
was
known
as
“The
Watch”.
It
was
when
people
actually
kept
watch
against
wild
animals,
although
many
of
them
simply
moved
around
or
visited
family
and
neighbours.
According
to
some
sleep
researchers,
a
short
period
of
insomnia(失眠)
at
midnight
is
not
a
disorder.
It
is
normal.
Humans
can
experience
another
state
of
consciousness
around
their
sleeping,
which
occurs
in
the
brief
period
before
we
fall
asleep
or
wake
ourselves
in
the
morning.
This
period
can
be
an
extraordinarily
creative
time
for
some
people.
The
impressive
inventor,
Thomas
Edison,
used
this
state
to
hit
upon
many
of
his
new
ideas.
Playing
with
your
sleep
rhythms
can
be
adventurous,
as
anxiety
may
set
in.
Medical
science
doesn’t
help
much
in
this
case.
It
offers
us
medicines
for
a
full
night’s
continuous
sleep,
which
sounds
natural
;
however,
according
to
Warren’s
theory,
it
is
really
the
opposite
of
what
we
need.

example
of
the
French
peasants
shows
the
fact
that
______.
?
A.
people
might
become
lazy
as
a
result
of
too
much
sleep
B.
there
were

B
Kong
Zi.
called
Confucius(551-479
B.
C.
)and
Socrates
(469-399
B.
C.
)lived
only
a
hundred
years
apart,
and
during
their
lifetimes
there
was
no
contact
between
China
and
Greece,
but
it
is
interesting
to
look
at
how
the
world
that
each
of
these
great
philosophers
came
from
shaped
their
ideas,
and
how
these
in
turn,
shaped
their
societies.
Neither
philosopher
lived
in
times
of
peace,
though
there
were
more
wars
in
Greece
than
in
China.
The
Chinese
states
were
very
large
and
feudal,
while
the
Greek
city-states
were
small
and
urban.
The
urban
environment
in
which
Socrates
lived
allowed
him
to
be
more
radical(激进的)than
Confucius.
Unlike
Confucius,
Socrates
was
not
asked
by
rulers
how
to
govern
effectively.
Thus
Socrates
was
able
to
be
more
idealistic,
focusing
on
issues
like
freedom
and
knowledge
for
its
own
sake,
on
the
other
hand,
advised
those
in
government
service,
and
many
of
his
students
went
on
to
government
service.
Confucius
suggested
Rule
as
a
principle
for
the
conduct
of
“Do
not
do
to
others
what
you
would
not
want
others
to
you.
”He
assumed
that
all
men
were
equal
at
birth,
though
some
had
more
potential
than
others,
and
that
it
was
knowledge
that
set
men
apart.
Socrates
focused
on
individual,
and
thought
that
the
greatest
purpose
of
man
was
to
seek
wisdom.
He
believed
that
some
had
more
potential
to
develop
their
reason
than
others
did.
Like
Confucius,
he
believed
that
the
superior
class
should
rule
the
inferior(下层的)classes.
For
Socrates,
the
family
was
of
no
importance,
and
the
community
of
little
concern.
For
Confucius,
however,
the
family
was
the
centre
of
society,
with
family
relations
considered
much
more
important
than
political
relations.
Both
men
are
respected
much
more
today
than
they
were
in
their
lifetimes.

阅读理解
  Lisa
was
running
late.
Lisa,
25,
had
a
lot
to
do
at
work,
plus
visitors
on
the
way:
her
parents
were
coming
in
for
Thanksgiving
from
her
hometown.
But
as
she
hurried
down
the
subway
stairs,
she
started
to
feel
uncomfortably
warm.
By
the
time
she
got
to
the
platform,
Lisa
felt
weak
and
tired—maybe
it
hadn’t
been
a
good
idea
to
give
blood
the
night
before,
she
thought.
She
rested
herself
against
a
post
close
to
the
tracks.
Several
yards
away,
Frank,
43,
and
his
girlfriend,
Jennifer,
found
a
spot
close
to
where
the
front
of
the
train
would
stop.
They
were
deep
in
discussion
about
a
house
they
were
thinking
of
buying.
But
when
he
heard
the
scream,
followed
by
someone
yelling,
“Oh,
my
God,
she
fell
in!

Frank
didn’t
hesitate.
He
jumped
down
to
the
tracks
and
ran
some
40
feet
toward
the
body
lying
on
the
rails.
“No!
Not
you!
”his
girlfriend
screamed
after
him.
She
was
right
to
be
alarmed.
By
the
time
Frank
reached
Lisa,
he
could
feel
the
tracks
shaking
and
see
the
light
coming.
The
train
was
about
20
seconds
from
the
station.
It
was
hard
to
lift
her.
She
was
just
out.
But
he
managed
to
raise
her
the
four
feet
to
the
platform
so
that
bystanders
could
hold
her
by
the
arms
and
drag
her
away
from
the
edge.
That
was
where
Lisa
briefly
regained
consciousness,
felt
herself
being
pulled
along
the
ground,
and
saw
someone
else
holding
her
purse.
Lisa
thought
she’d
been
robbed.
A
woman
held
her
hand
and
a
man
gave
his
shirt
to
help
stop
the
blood
pouring
from
her
head.
And
she
tried
to
talk
but
she
couldn’t,
and
that
was
when
she
realized
how
much
pain
she
was
in.
Police
and
fire
officials
soon
arrived,
and
Frank
told
the
story
to
an
officer.
Jennifer
said
her
boyfriend
was
calm
on
their
40-minute
train
ride
downtown—just
as
he
had
been
seconds
after
the
rescue,
which
made
her
think
about
her
reaction
at
the
time.
“I
saw
the
train
coming
and
I
was
thinking
he
was
going
to
die,

she
explained.

you
encounter
every
day?
Do
you
know
the

at
the

the

or
restaurant?
One
great
way
to
get

The
best
way
to
know
more

be
kind
to
everyone
you
meet.
Take
a
moment
to
learn
a
little
about

at
the
end
of
the

we
look

and
then
plan
some

3.

be
just
a
phone
call
to
tell
them
“thank

When
we
serve
other
people,
we
develop
personal
joy.
?
Find
a
purpose.
The

ready
to
say
you
did
everything
you
could.
?

Make
the

said
that
you
can
measure
a
person
by
how
they
treat
the

【语篇概述】这是一篇简单的以拥有精彩一天的一些方法为主旨的文章,
本文给出了一些小贴士以确保我们可以自信地回答出生活中的突击测验,
从而做到一天之中我们能做的事情。
1.
【解析】选F。由这一段的小标题“Be
kind.
”可知本段主要讲述的是要想拥有精彩的一天,
就要待人友善,
且由横线后的句子“How
often
do
you
stop
to
talk
to
the
people
you
encounter
every
day?
”等可推断出主要讲的是人与人之间的关系,
F主要讲的是据说你可以通过一个人怎样对待那些对他们无能为力的人来衡量一个人,
与小标题相符,
故选F。
2.
【解析】选C。横线处于小标题处,
故与上一段的小标题“Be
kind.
”有相似之处,
且由段意及句子“A
great
way
to
stay
productive
is
to
look
at
the
things
you
would
like
to
accomplish
today,
this
week,
this
month,
etc,
and
then
plan
some
time
to
work
on
each
of
them.
”可知,
本段主要讲述的是一个保持生产力的好方法,
所以“Stay
productive
all
the
time”是最适合的。故选C。
3.
【解析】选E。横线之前的句子是“It
may
be
just
a
smile
and
a
“hello”.
”它可能只是一个微笑和一个“你好”,
横线之后的句子是“It
may
be
just
a
phone
call
to
tell
them
‘thank
you
for
being
a
friend.
’”也许只是打个电话告诉他们“谢谢你做我的朋友”,
所以横线应填与前后句子结构类似的句子,
故选E。
4.
【解析】选G。本段小标题的主题是“找到一个目标”,
且横线前又说“最幸福的人是有一个或多个大的人生目标的人”,
所以横线处可能是列举了不一样的“人生目标”,
从而引出下一句“当我们拥有了一个大目标时,
我们才能充满激情,
才会每天为实现这个目标而兴奋不已。”故选G。
5.
【解析】选B。主旨大意题。前面四个小段分别给出了一些关于拥有精彩一天的小方法,
所以最后一段是对整篇文章的总结。由最后一句“When
you
give
yourself
the
pop
quiz
at
the
end
of
the
day,
you
will
be
ready
to
say
you
did
everything
you
could.
”可知,
当你在一天结束时给自己做突击测试时,
你会准备说你做了你能做的一切,
所以由分析可知横线处应填“Make
the
most
of
every
day”,
好好利用每一天,
故选B。

In
October,
1961,
at
Crowley
Field
in
Cincinnati,
Ohio,
an
old,
deaf
gentleman
named
William
E.
Hoy
stood
up
to
throw
the
first
ball
of
the
World
Series.
Most
people
at
Crowley
Field
on
that
day
probably
did
not
remember
Hoy
because
he
had
retired
(退休)
from
professional
baseball
58
years
earlier,
in
1903.
However,
he
had
been
an
outstanding
player
and
the
deaf
people
still
talk
about
him
and
his
years
in
baseball.
William
E.
Hoy
was
born
in
Houckstown,
Ohio,
on
May
23,
1862.
He
became
deaf
when
he
was
two
years
old.
He
attended
the
Columbus
Ohio
School
for
the
deaf.
After
graduation,
he
started
playing
baseball
while
working
as
a
shoemaker.
Hoy
began
playing
professional
baseball
in
1886
for
Oshkosh
(Wisconsin)
of
the
Northwestern
League.
In
1888,
he
started
as
an
outfielder
(外场手)
with
the
old
Washington
Senators.
His
small
figure
and
speed
made
him
an
outstanding
base
runner.
He
was
very
good
at
stealing
bases
during
his
career.
In
the
1888
major
league
season,
he
stole
82
bases.
He
was
also
the
Senators’
leading
hitter
in
1888.
Hoy
was
clever;
he
threw
right-handed
and
batted
left-handed.
On
June
19,
1889,
he
threw
out
three
batters
(击球手)
at
the
plate
from
his
outfield
position.
The
arm
signals
used
by
judges
today
to
show
balls
and
strikes
began
because
of
Hoy.
The
judge
lifted
his
right
arm
to
show
that
the
pitch
was
a
strike,
and
his
left
arm
to
signal
that
it
was
a
ball.
For
many
years
people
talked
about
Hoy’s
last
ball
game
in
1903.
He
was
playing
for
LosAngeles
of
the
Pacific
Coast
Winter
League.
It
was
a
memorable
game
because
Hoy
hit
a
wonderful
ball
which
won
the
game.
It
was
a
very
foggy
day
and,
therefore,
very
hard
to
see
the
ball.
In
the
ninth
inning(棒球的一局),
with
two
men
out,
Hoy
managed
to
catch
a
fly
ball
to
make
the
third
out
in
spite
of
the
fog.
Los
Angeles
defeated
their
opposition
and
won
the
game.
After
he
retired,
Hoy
stayed
busy.
He
ran
a
dairy
farm
near
Cincinnati
for
20
years.
He
also
became
a
public
speaker
and
traveled
giving
speeches.
Until
a
few
years
before
his
death,
he
took
4-10
mile
walks
several
mornings
a
week.
On
December
15,
1961
William
Hoy
died
at
the
age
of
99.

  The
need
to
feed
a
growing
population
is
putting
much
pressure
on
the
world’s
supply
of
water.
With
97%
of
the
world’s
water
too
salty
to
be
drunk
or
used
in
agriculture,
the
worldwide
supply
of
water
needs
careful
management,
especially
in
agriculture.
Although
the
idea
of
a
water
shortage(短缺)seems
strange
to
someone
fortunate
enough
to
live
in
a
high
rainfall
country,
many
of
the
world’s
agricultural
industries
experience
constant
water
shortages.
Although
dams
can
be
built
to
store
water
for
agricultural
use
in
dry
areas
and
dry
seasons,
the
costs
of
water
redistribution(重新分配)are
very
high.
Not
only
is
there
the
cost
of
the
engineering
itself,
but
there
is
also
an
environmental
cost
to
be
considered.
Where
valleys(山谷)are
flooded
to
create
dams,
houses
are
lost
and
wildlife
homes
destroyed.
Besides,
water
may
flow
easily
through
pipes
to
fields,
but
it
cannot
be
transported
from
one
side
of
the
world
to
the
other.
Each
country
must
therefore
rely
on
the
management
of
its
own
water
to
supply
its
farming
requirements.
This
is
particularly
troubling
for
countries
with
agricultural
industries
in
areas
dependent
on
irrigation(灌溉).
In
Texas,
farmers’
overuse
of
irrigation
water
has
resulted
in
a
25%
reduction
of
the
water
stores.
In
the
Central
Valley
area
of
south-western
USA,
a
huge
water
engineering
project
provided
water
for
farming
in
dry
valleys,
but
much
of
the
water
use
has
been
poorly
managed.
Saudi
Arabia’s
attempts
to
grow
wheat
in
desert
areas
have
seen
the
pumping
of
huge
quantities
of
irrigation
water
from
underground
reserves.
Because
there
is
no
rainfall
in
these
areas,
such
reserves
can
only
decrease,
and
it
is
believed
that
fifty
years
of
pumping
will
see
them
run
dry.
