B
Liana
nervously
bit
her
nails
while
she
waited
for
the
exam
to
arrive.
She
looked
around
the
room;
hundreds
of
other
law
students
sat
in
rows
staring
anxiously
at
the
tables
in
front
of
them.
Just
as
she
began
to
take
a
deep
breath
to
calm
her
anxiety,
an
exam
booklet(册子)
was
placed
in
front
of
her.
This
was
the
moment
she
had
been
expecting
ever
since
she
began
law
school
three
years
ago.
She
picked
up
her
pencil,
and
opened
to
the
first
page
of
the
bar
exam,
a
test
for
all
students
wanting
to
become
licensed
lawyers.
Liana
never
thought
she
would
want
to
become
a
lawyer.
Her
parents
were
both
artists.
Law
was
something
she
had
not
been
exposed
to
as
a
child.
But
art
made
for
a
tumultuous
career—both
of
her
parents
had
struggled
to
find
jobs
and
worked
round
the
clock
when
they
were
young.
Even
though
they
finally
seemed
successful
and
happy,
Liana
wanted
something
different.
She
was
the
anchor
on
her
high
school
debate
team,
and
consistently
impressed
her
competitors
with
her
analytical
thinking.
“Never
argue
with
Ms
Lakes.
”
her
teachers
would
say.
So
she
chose
to
major
in
law.
In
her
mind,
she
pictured
herself
in
a
New
York
City
courtroom(法庭)
dressed
in
an
expensive
suit,
with
papers
in
her
hand,
waving
at
the
jury(陪审团)
in
a
speech
on
human
rights.
But
now,
with
the
bar
exam
sitting
in
front
of
her,
she
started
to
worry.
“What
if
I
don’t
pass?
Did
I
study
enough?
”
Her
thoughts
raced
through
her
mind.
On
the
first
page
were
seven
paragraphs
detailing
a
law
situation
followed
by
a
series
of
questions.
Liana
read
through
the
paragraphs,
and
quickly
scribbled
down
an
explanation
of
the
first
question
before
moving
onto
the
next
question.
The
next
few
hours
went
like
this
as
the
clock
ticked
closer
and
closer
to
the
lunch
hour.
At
12:
00
p.
m.
sharp,
a
buzzer(蜂鸣器)
sounded
and
everyone
was
told
to
put
down
their
pencils
and
walked
out
for
an
hour-long
lunch
break.
At
lunch,
Liana

it
go?
”
she
asked.
“To
be
honest,
I’ve
no
idea.
I
just
kept
writing.
”
Kevin
said.
Liana
laughed
and
said
she
felt
the
same
way.
After
lunch,
the
two
exchanged
words
of
encouragement.
They
strolled
back
into
the
exam
center
a
bit
more
refreshed.
Liana
finished
the
second
half
of
the
exam
that
day
with
a
better
feeling
than
what
she
started
with
in
the

be
the
best
title
for
the
passage?
A.
The
Wild
Dream
B.
A
True
Lawyer
C.
The
Big
Test
D.
A
Hard
Choice
C
When
I
was
a
child,
not
many
of
us
grew
up
with
pets
in
Asia.
It
was
unusual
to
show
sympathy
towards
animals.
We
learnt
respect
for
our
elders
and
for
our
government,
and
we
learnt
etiquette(礼仪)too,
but
rarely
was
it
suggested
that
we
extend
any
feelings
towards
animals,
or
indeed
that
animals
have
feelings.
And
because
of
this,
many
children
in
Asia
grow
up
considering
animals
exist
to
serve
us,
feed
us,
entertain
us
and
clothe
us.
I
co-founded
ACT
Asia
in
2006
with
an
Asian
vet,
to
support
the
development
of
caring
societies
in
Asia.
While
many
nonprofits
were
already
addressing
human,
animal
and
environmental
concerns
with
direct
action,
I
felt
the
cultural
shock
between
continents
was
too
great
to
ignore.
We
had
to
accept
that
change
would
not
happen
immediately,
and
that
intervening(干预)would
cause
defence.
First,
we
have
to
help
societies
understand
the
interdependence
of
people,
animals
and
our
natural
habitat.
Instead
of
stepping
in
to
find
fault,
we
stepped
back
and
considered
the
cause.
Millions
of
people
live
below
the
poverty
line,
and
most
left-behind
children
live
without
their
parents,
so
it
was
clear
that
our
biggest
barrier
was
ignorance,
not
cruelty.
With
the
future
in
mind,
education
is
at
the
core
of
all
we
do.
We
should
teach
children
about
respect
and
kindness,
and
we
see
that
a
sense
of
responsibility
is
improving.
By
doing
so,
they
are
developing
a
keen
sense
of
respect,
to
each
other,
for
all
species
and
our
natural
environment,
but
also
for
themselves.
Given
the
chance
to
understand
the
truth
about
life
on
earth,
many
people—but
children
in
particular—will
choose
compassion(同情)over
cruelty.
28.
What
were
the
Asian
children
like
when
the
author
was
a
child?
A.
They
never
kept
pets.
B.
They
had
no
compassion.
C.
They
didn’t
pay
attention
to
their
behavior.
D.
They
took
it
for
granted
that
animals
serve
human.
29.
What
is
the
purpose
of
the
ACT
Asia?
A.
To
find
the
causes
of
poverty
in
Asia.
B.
To
appeal
to
people
not
to
kill
animals.
C.
To
improve
Asian’s
sense
of
caring
societies.
D.
To
help
solve
the
culture
shock
between
countries.
30.
What
can
we
infer
from
the
second
paragraph?
A.
Direct
action
of
many
nonprofits
was
efficient.
B.
The
change
of
caring
societies
would
appear
soon.
C.
People,
animals
and
our
natural
habitat
exist
together.
D.
The
biggest
barrier
of
us
was
not
ignorance
but
cruelty.
31.
What
does
the
author
think
of
present
Asian
children’s
sense
of
caring
society?
A.
It
is
hopeless.
B.
It
is
satisfying.
C.
It
is
annoying.
D.
It
is
uncertain.
D
The
view
you
adopt
for
yourself
significantly
affects
the
way
you
lead
your
life.
It
can
determine
whether
you
become
the
person
you
want
to
be
and
whether
you
achieve
the
things
you
value.
How
does
this
happen?
How
can
a
simple
belief
have
the
power
to
transform
your
psychology
and,
as
a
result,
your
life?
Believing
that
your
qualities
are
carved
in
stone—the
fixed
mindset—creates
an
urgency
to
prove
yourself
over
and
over.
Some
of
us
are
trained
in
this
mindset
from
an
early
age.
Even
as
a
child,
I
was
focused
on
being
smart,
but
the
fixed
mindset
was
really
stamped
in
by
Mrs
Wilson,
my
sixth-grade
teacher.
She
believed
that
people’s
IQ
scores
told
the
whole
story
of
who
they
were.
We
were
seated
around
the
room
in
IQ
order,
and
only
the
highest-IQ
students
could
be
trusted
to
collect
homework,
or
take
a
note
to
the
principal.
She
was
creating
a
mindset
in
which
everyone
in
the
class
had
one
consuming
goal—look
smart,
don’t
look
stupid.
I’ve
seen
so
many
people
with
this
one
consuming
goal
of
proving
themselves—in
the
classroom,
in
their
careers,
and
in
their
relationships.
Every
situation
calls
for
a
confirmation
of
their
intelligence,
personality,
or
character.
Every
situation
is
evaluated:
Will
I
succeed
or
fail?
Will
I
look
smart
or
stupid?
Will
I
feel
like
a
winner
or
a
loser?
But
doesn’t
our
society
value
intelligence,
personality,
and
character?
Isn’t
it
normal
to
want
these
qualities?
Yes,
but.
.
.
There’s
another
mindset,
the
growth
mindset,
which
is
based
on
the
belief
that
your
basic
qualities
are
things
you
can
develop
through
your
efforts.
Although
people
may
differ
in
every
which
way—in
their
inborn
talents,
interests,
or
characters—everyone
can
change
and
grow
through
efforts
and
experience.
Did
you
know
that
Darwin
and
Tolstoy
were
considered
ordinary
children?
That
the
photographer
Cindy
Sherman,
who
has
been
on
almost
every
list
of
the
most
important
artists
of
the
twentieth
century,
failed
her
first
photography
course.
That
Geraldine
Page,
one
of
our
greatest
actresses,
was
advised
to
give
it
up
for
lack
of
talent.
You
can
see
how
the
belief
that
valuable
qualities
can
be
developed
creates
a
passion
for
learning.
Why
waste
time
proving
how
great
you
are,
when
could
you
be
getting
better?
Why
hide
weaknesses
instead
of
overcoming
them?
And
why
seek
out
the
tried
and
true,
instead
of
experiences
that
will
stretch
you?
The
passion
for
stretching
yourself
and
sticking
to
it,
even
when
it’s
not
going
well,
is
the
feature
of
the
growth
mindset.
This
is
the
mindset
that
allows
people
to
achieve
success
during
some
of
the
most
challenging
times
in
their
lives.
32.
What
is
the
author’s
attitude
towards
Mrs
Wilson’s
way
of
teaching?
A.
Unconcerned.
B.
Sceptical.
C.
Supportive.
D.
Disapproving.
33.
According
to
Paragraph
5,
the
example
of
Darwin
and
Tolstoy
shows
that
______.
?
A.
success
has
nothing
to
do
with
natural
gifts
B.
achievements
can
be
gained
through
hard
work
C.
it’s
difficult
to
predict
one’s
future
success
D.
one
single
outcome
defines
our
ability
34.
The
author
strongly
believes
that
we
should
______.
?
A.
carry
out
an
honest
evaluation
of
our
qualities
B.
see
success
as
a
proof
of
intelligence
or
talent
C.
focus
on
self-development
rather
than
self-proving
D.
believe
good
things
will
happen
during
difficult
times
35.
The
main
purpose
of
the
passage
is
to
______.
?
A.
explain
the
differences
between
two
mindsets
B.
persuade
people
to
adopt
the
right
mindset
C.
inform
people
of
the
influence
of
mindset
D.
advise
people
to
assess
their
mindset

Why
people
collect
art
Many
people
through
history
have
gone
to
great
lengths
to
collect
art.
But
what
motivates
these
collectors?
One
popular
explanation
for
collecting
is
that
they
can
have
financial
gain.
Some
resell
works,
earning
enormous
profit.
36
Immorally,
some
“collectors”
buy
art
as
a
form
of
money
laundering(洗钱),
since
it
is
far
easier
to
move
art
than
cash
between
counties
without
examination.
?
37
For
them,
art
is
important
for
other
reasons.
The
best
way
to
understand
the
underlying
drive
of
art
collecting
is
as
a
means
to
create
and
strengthen
social
bonds,
and
as
a
way
for
collectors
to
communicate
within
these
new
networks.
?
Collectors
are
not
only
interested
in
creating
social
links;
they
are
also
motivated
by
the
messages
they
can
send
once
these
social
networks
are
created.
We
all
know
art
is
a
powerful
way
for
the
artist
to
express
thoughts
and
feelings.
38
Displaying
art
can
send
a
message
about
who
the
collector
really
is—at
least
who
she
sees
herself
as.
?
39
Through
the
collections,
collectors
convey
messages
not
just
about
themselves,
but
about
the
world
as
a
whole.
For
example,
the
kid
with
the
shoebox
of
bird
feathers
might
show
others
her
collection
not
just
to
make
friends,
but
also
to
convince
them
about
the
importance
of
protecting
endangered
species.
?
People
collect
art
for
various
reasons.
40 ?
A.
Some
gain
art
works
in
an
illegal
way.
B.
But
most
collectors
think
little
of
profit.
C.
Artworks
preserve
the
qualities
of
their
makers.
D.
It
also
serves
as
an
effective
way
to
express
collectors.
E.
Some
get
large
tax
reductions
for
donating
art
to
museums.
F.
No
doubt
art
collection
is
a
hard
addiction
to
overcome.
G.
Other
art
collectors
see
their
collections
as
having
a
broader
power.

The
Fitting-in
of
Suzy
Khan
The
first
time
I
saw
Suzy
Khan,
I
knew
I
had
to
help
her.
She
was
really
small
for
her
age
of
12.
The
boys
in
my
class
often
41
about
her
and
laughed
their
heads
off.
She
would
open
a
book,
pretending
to
read,
with
tears
dropping
on
the
open
page.
?
All
I
knew
was
that
she
was
an
orphan
(孤儿)
from
Africa.
She
had
just
been
adopted
by
a
family
in
town
who
42
that
the
best
way
for
her
to
learn
American
ways
of
life
was
to
be
with
American
kids.
I
looked
down
at
this
43
girl
and
promised
myself
that
somehow
I
would
help
her.
?
But
how
could
I
help
her
44
in
with
us?
There
had
to
be
a
way.
?
One
day,
when
I
went
into
the
classroom,
I
saw
that
Suzy
had
45
her
geography
book
to
a
picture
of
a
train,
and
in
her
notebook,
she
had
made
a(n) 46
copy.
?
I
was
surprised
and
thought
that
she
could
do
something
in
the
coming
47
show.
So,
I
took
her
to
see
the
art
teacher,
Miss
Parker,
and
showed
her
what
Suzy
had
drawn.
“Wow,
it’s
wonderful!
”said
Miss
Parker,
who
then
showed
us
a
poster
she
had
painted
48
the
talent
show.
“I
need
more
of
these,
but
I
just
don’t
have
enough
49 .
Could
you
help
me,
Suzy?
”?
On
the
day
of
the
talent
show,
Suzy’s
posters
were
everywhere—all
over
the
hall
and
all
over
the
school,
each
one
different.
“And
finally,
”said
Mr
Brown,
the
schoolmaster,
at
the
end
of
the
show,
“we
have
a(n) 50
award.
I’m
sure
you’ve
all
noticed
the
wonderful
posters.
”Everyone
nodded.
“One
of
our
own
students
51
them.
”?
I
could
hear
everyone
whispering.
“Who
in
our
school
could
draw
that
well?
”
Mr
Brown
waited
a
while
before
saying,
“ 52
this
student
worked
so
hard
on
the
posters,
she
deserves
a
53 ,
too.
Our
mystery(神秘的)
artist
is
our
new
student—Suzy
Khan!
”?
Mr
Brown
thanked
her
for
all
the
wonderful
posters
and
gave
her
a
professional
artist’s
set.
“Thank
you.
”she
cried.
I
54 ,
at
that
time
when
I
was
looking
at
her
excited
face,
she’d
probably
never
owned
anything
in
her
whole
life.

started
to

their
hands.
Suzy
Khan

the
rent
for
several
months,
the
landlord
was
breathing
down
their
necks(盯着他们).
One
day,
Ali
took
Zahra’s
shoes
to
a
shoe
repairman
to
be
fixed,
but
he
lost
them
on
the
way
home.
It
wasn’t
until
he
got
home
that
he
realized
he
had
lost
the
shoes.
He
was
afraid
that
his
parents
would
be
angry
and
disappointed,
so
he
begged
his
sister
to
keep
it
a
secret.
Zahra
agreed
and
the
two
decided
to
share
Ali’s
running
shoes.
Zahra’s
school
hours
were
in
the
morning,
so
she
would
wear
them
first.
After
school,
she
would
rush
back
and
give
them
to
Ali.
He
could
then
run
to
his
school,
which
began
in
the
afternoon.
Although
he
ran
as
fast
as
he
could,
Ali
often
arrived
late
and
was
warned
by
the
school.
Ali
heard
about
a
long
distance
race
that
was
held
for
the
boys
in
the
city.
When
he
learned
that
the
third
prize
was
a
new
pair
of
shoes,
he
decided
to
take
part.
He
ran
home
excitedly
and
promised
his
sister
that
he
would
win
her
the
new
shoes.
The
day
of
race
arrived.
Ali
had
a
strong
start,
but
halfway
through
the
race
he
began
to
get
tired
and
his
legs
began
to
ache.
Getting
more
and
more
exhausted
he
thought
only
of
Zahra
and
his
promise
to
her.
Dreaming
of
the
new
shoes
he
would
win
for
his
sister
gave
him
strength,
and
he
stayed
right
behind
the
two
fastest
runners,
determined
to
finish
third.
Suddenly,
as
the
finish
line
drew
near,
another
runner
collided(碰撞)
with
Ali
from
behind
and
he
crashed
to
the
ground.
Ali
looked
up
and
saw
the
other
boys
rushing
ahead.

B
Liana
nervously
bit
her
nails
while
she
waited
for
the
exam
to
arrive.
She
looked
around
the
room;
hundreds
of
other
law
students
sat
in
rows
staring
anxiously
at
the
tables
in
front
of
them.
Just
as
she
began
to
take
a
deep
breath
to
calm
her
anxiety,
an
exam
booklet(册子)
was
placed
in
front
of
her.
This
was
the
moment
she
had
been
expecting
ever
since
she
began
law
school
three
years
ago.
She
picked
up
her
pencil,
and
opened
to
the
first
page
of
the
bar
exam,
a
test
for
all
students
wanting
to
become
licensed
lawyers.
Liana
never
thought
she
would
want
to
become
a
lawyer.
Her
parents
were
both
artists.
Law
was
something
she
had
not
been
exposed
to
as
a
child.
But
art
made
for
a
tumultuous
career—both
of
her
parents
had
struggled
to
find
jobs
and
worked
round
the
clock
when
they
were
young.
Even
though
they
finally
seemed
successful
and
happy,
Liana
wanted
something
different.
She
was
the
anchor
on
her
high
school
debate
team,
and
consistently
impressed
her
competitors
with
her
analytical
thinking.
“Never
argue
with
Ms
Lakes.
”
her
teachers
would
say.
So
she
chose
to
major
in
law.
In
her
mind,
she
pictured
herself
in
a
New
York
City
courtroom(法庭)
dressed
in
an
expensive
suit,
with
papers
in
her
hand,
waving
at
the
jury(陪审团)
in
a
speech
on
human
rights.
But
now,
with
the
bar
exam
sitting
in
front
of
her,
she
started
to
worry.
“What
if
I
don’t
pass?
Did
I
study
enough?
”
Her
thoughts
raced
through
her
mind.
On
the
first
page
were
seven
paragraphs
detailing
a
law
situation
followed
by
a
series
of
questions.
Liana
read
through
the
paragraphs,
and
quickly
scribbled
down
an
explanation
of
the
first
question
before
moving
onto
the
next
question.
The
next
few
hours
went
like
this
as
the
clock
ticked
closer
and
closer
to
the
lunch
hour.
At
12:
00
p.
m.
sharp,
a
buzzer(蜂鸣器)
sounded
and
everyone
was
told
to
put
down
their
pencils
and
walked
out
for
an
hour-long
lunch
break.
At
lunch,
Liana
met
her
friend,
Kevin.
“How
did
it
go?
”
she
asked.
“To
be
honest,
I’ve
no
idea.
I
just
kept
writing.
”
Kevin
said.
Liana
laughed
and
said
she
felt
the
same
way.
After
lunch,
the
two
exchanged
words
of
encouragement.
They
strolled
back
into
the
exam
center
a
bit
more
refreshed.
Liana
finished
the
second
half
of
the
exam
that
day
with
a
better
feeling
than
what
she
started
with
in
the

When
I
was
a
child,
not
many
of
us
grew
up
with
pets
in
Asia.
It
was
unusual
to
show
sympathy
towards
animals.
We
learnt
respect
for
our
elders
and
for
our
government,
and
we
learnt
etiquette(礼仪)too,
but
rarely
was
it
suggested
that
we
extend
any
feelings
towards
animals,
or
indeed
that
animals
have
feelings.
And
because
of
this,
many
children
in
Asia
grow
up
considering
animals
exist
to
serve
us,
feed
us,
entertain
us
and
clothe
us.
I
co-founded
ACT
Asia
in
2006
with
an
Asian
vet,
to
support
the
development
of
caring
societies
in
Asia.
While
many
nonprofits
were
already
addressing
human,
animal
and
environmental
concerns
with
direct
action,
I
felt
the
cultural
shock
between
continents
was
too
great
to
ignore.
We
had
to
accept
that
change
would
not
happen
immediately,
and
that
intervening(干预)would
cause
defence.
First,
we
have
to
help
societies
understand
the
interdependence
of
people,
animals
and
our
natural
habitat.
Instead
of
stepping
in
to
find
fault,
we
stepped
back
and
considered
the
cause.
Millions
of
people
live
below
the
poverty
line,
and
most
left-behind
children
live
without
their
parents,
so
it
was
clear
that
our
biggest
barrier
was
ignorance,
not
cruelty.
With
the
future
in
mind,
education
is
at
the
core
of
all
we
do.
We
should
teach
children
about
respect
and
kindness,
and
we
see
that
a
sense
of
responsibility
is
improving.
By
doing
so,
they
are
developing
a
keen
sense
of
respect,
to
each
other,
for
all
species
and
our
natural
environment,
but
also
for
themselves.
Given
the
chance
to
understand
the
truth
about
life
on
earth,
many
people—but
children
in
particular—will
choose
compassion(同情)over
cruelty.

The
view
you
adopt
for
yourself
significantly
affects
the
way
you
lead
your
life.
It
can
determine
whether
you
become
the
person
you
want
to
be
and
whether
you
achieve
the
things
you
value.
How
does
this
happen?
How
can
a
simple
belief
have
the
power
to
transform
your
psychology
and,
as
a
result,
your
life?
Believing
that
your
qualities
are
carved
in
stone—the
fixed
mindset—creates
an
urgency
to
prove
yourself
over
and
over.
Some
of
us
are
trained
in
this
mindset
from
an
early
age.
Even
as
a
child,
I
was
focused
on
being
smart,
but
the
fixed
mindset
was
really
stamped
in
by
Mrs
Wilson,
my
sixth-grade
teacher.
She
believed
that
people’s
IQ
scores
told
the
whole
story
of
who
they
were.
We
were
seated
around
the
room
in
IQ
order,
and
only
the
highest-IQ
students
could
be
trusted
to
collect
homework,
or
take
a
note
to
the
principal.
She
was
creating
a
mindset
in
which
everyone
in
the
class
had
one
consuming
goal—look
smart,
don’t
look
stupid.
I’ve
seen
so
many
people
with
this
one
consuming
goal
of
proving
themselves—in
the
classroom,
in
their
careers,
and
in
their
relationships.
Every
situation
calls
for
a
confirmation
of
their
intelligence,
personality,
or
character.
Every
situation
is
evaluated:
Will
I
succeed
or
fail?
Will
I
look
smart
or
stupid?
Will
I
feel
like
a
winner
or
a
loser?
But
doesn’t
our
society
value
intelligence,
personality,
and
character?
Isn’t
it
normal
to
want
these
qualities?
Yes,
but.
.
.
There’s
another
mindset,
the
growth
mindset,
which
is
based
on
the
belief
that
your
basic
qualities
are
things
you
can
develop
through
your
efforts.
Although
people
may
differ
in
every
which
way—in
their
inborn
talents,
interests,
or
characters—everyone
can
change
and
grow
through
efforts
and
experience.
Did
you
know
that
Darwin
and
Tolstoy
were
considered
ordinary
children?
That
the
photographer
Cindy
Sherman,
who
has
been
on
almost
every
list
of
the
most
important
artists
of
the
twentieth
century,
failed
her
first
photography
course.
That
Geraldine
Page,
one
of
our
greatest
actresses,
was
advised
to
give
it
up
for
lack
of
talent.
You
can
see
how
the
belief
that
valuable
qualities
can
be
developed
creates
a
passion
for
learning.
Why
waste
time
proving
how
great
you
are,
when
could
you
be
getting
better?
Why
hide
weaknesses
instead
of
overcoming
them?
And
why
seek
out
the
tried
and
true,
instead
of
experiences
that
will
stretch
you?
The
passion
for
stretching
yourself
and
sticking
to
it,
even
when
it’s
not
going
well,
is
the
feature
of
the
growth
mindset.
This
is
the
mindset
that
allows
people
to
achieve
success
during
some
of
the
most
challenging
times
in
their
lives.

Why
people
collect
art
Many
people
through
history
have
gone
to
great
lengths
to
collect
art.
But
what
motivates
these
collectors?
One
popular
explanation
for
collecting
is
that
they
can
have
financial
gain.
Some
resell
works,
earning
enormous
profit.
36
Immorally,
some
“collectors”
buy
art
as
a
form
of
money
laundering(洗钱),
since
it
is
far
easier
to
move
art
than
cash
between
counties
without
examination.
?
37
For
them,
art
is
important
for
other
reasons.
The
best
way
to
understand
the
underlying
drive
of
art
collecting
is
as
a
means
to
create
and
strengthen
social
bonds,
and
as
a
way
for
collectors
to
communicate
within
these
new
networks.
?
Collectors
are
not
only
interested
in
creating
social
links;
they
are
also
motivated
by
the
messages
they
can
send
once
these
social
networks
are
created.
We
all
know
art
is
a
powerful
way
for
the
artist
to
express
thoughts
and
feelings.
38
Displaying
art
can
send
a
message
about
who
the
collector
really
is—at
least
who
she
sees
herself
as.
?
39
Through
the
collections,
collectors
convey
messages
not
just
about
themselves,
but
about
the
world
as
a
whole.
For
example,
the
kid
with
the
shoebox
of
bird
feathers
might
show
others
her
collection
not
just
to
make
friends,
but
also
to
convince
them
about
the
importance
of
protecting
endangered
species.
?
People
collect
art
for
various
reasons.
40 ?
A.
Some
gain
art
works
in
an
illegal
way.
B.
But
most
collectors
think
little
of
profit.
C.
Artworks
preserve
the

【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,
分析了人们收藏艺术品的原因。
36.
【解析】选E。上文说关于收藏,
一个普遍的解释是他们可以获得经济利益,
一些人转售收藏品以赚取巨额利润,
下文又说有些收藏者购买艺术品进行洗钱,
此处说的还是利用艺术品获得经济利益的做法,
故E项符合语境。
37.
【解析】选B。根据本空后的“For
them,
art
is
important
for
other
reasons.
”可知,
对他们来说,
艺术之所以重要还有其他原因,
此处说的是一些人收藏艺术品不是看重经济利益,
故B项符合语境。
38.
【解析】选D。根据本空前的“We
all
know
art
is
a
powerful
way
for
the
artist
to
express
thoughts
and
feelings.
”可知,
我们都知道艺术是艺术家表达想法和情感的有力方式,
此处“它也是表达收藏者的一种有效方式”正好承接上文,
故D项符合语境。
39.
【解析】选G。根据本空后的“Through
the
collections,
collectors
convey
messages
not
just
about
themselves,
but
about
the
world
as
a
whole.
”可知,
一般来说,
通过收藏品,
收藏者不仅传递关于他们自己的信息,
还传递关于世界的信息,
此处是说收藏者认为自己的收藏品有重要意义,
故G项符合语境。
40.
【解析】选F。根据本空前的“People
collect
art
for
various
reasons.
”可知,
人们收藏艺术品有各种各样的原因,
此处总结全文,
故F项符合语境。
【规律方法】
在七选五的解题过程中,
上下文和选项里出现的一些关联词往往是重要线索,
例如本篇第38题,
根据本空前的“We
all
know
art
is
a
powerful
way
for
the
artist
to
express
thoughts
and
feelings.
”可知,
我们都知道艺术是表达想法和情感的有力方式,
D项中的also是重要提示,
而且express一词在上文中也出现过,
D项“它也是表达收藏者的一种有效方式”正好承接上文。

The
Fitting-in
of
Suzy

The
first
time
I
saw
Suzy
Khan,
I
knew
I
had
to
help
her.
She
was
really
small
for
her
age
of
12.
The
boys
in
my

often
41
about
her

off.
She
would
open
a

pretending
to
read,
with
tears
dropping
on
the

All
I
knew
was
that
she

an
orphan

from
Africa.
She
had
just
been
adopted

a
family
in
town
who

that
the

for
her

was
to
be

American
kids.
I
looked
down
at
this
43
girl
and
promised
myself
that
somehow
I
would
help
her.
?
But
how
could
I
help
her
44
in
with
us?
There
had
to
be
a
way.
?
One
day,
when
I
went
into
the
classroom,
I
saw
that
Suzy
had
45
her
geography
book
to
a
picture
of
a
train,
and
in
her
notebook,
she
had
made
a(n) 46
copy.

I
was
surprised
and
thought
that
she
could
do
something
in
the
coming

show.
So,
I
took
her
to
see
the
art
teacher,
Miss
Parker,
and
showed
her
what
Suzy
had
drawn.
“Wow,
it’s
wonderful!
”said
Miss
Parker,
who
then
showed
us
a
poster
she
had
painted
48
the
talent
show.
“I
need
more
of
these,
but
I
just
don’t
have
enough
49 .
Could
you
help
me,
Suzy?
”?
On
the
day
of
the
talent
show,
Suzy’s
posters
were
everywhere—all
over
the
hall
and
all
over
the
school,
each
one
different.
“And
finally,
”said
Mr
Brown,
the
schoolmaster,
at
the
end
of
the
show,
“we
have
a(n) 50
award.
I’m
sure
you’ve
all
noticed
the
wonderful
posters.
”Everyone
nodded.
“One
of
our
own
students
51
them.
”?
I
could
hear
everyone
whispering.
“Who
in
our
school
could
draw
that
well?
”
Mr
Brown
waited
a
while
before
saying,
“ 52
this
student
worked
so
hard
on
the
posters,
she
deserves
a
53 ,
too.
Our
mystery(神秘的)
artist
is
our
new
student—Suzy
Khan!
”?
Mr
Brown
thanked
her
for
all
the
wonderful
posters
and
gave
her
a
professional
artist’s
set.
“Thank
you.
”she
cried.
I
54 ,
at
that
time
when
I
was
looking
at
her
excited
face,
she’d
probably
never
owned
anything
in
her
whole
life.
?
Everyone
started
to
55
their
hands.
Suzy
Khan
gave
them
a
shy
smile
and
the
applause
was
deafening.
I
knew
then
Suzy
was
going
to
be
all
right.

(2019·台州高一检测)
Ali
and
his
younger
sister,
Zahra,
lived
with
their
parents
in
a
poor
neighborhood.
Their
mother
was
very
sick
and
their
father
was
struggling
to

a

they
had

As
they

the

One
day,
Ali
took
Zahra’s
shoes
to
a
shoe
repairman
to
be
fixed,
but
he
lost
them
on
the
way
home.
It
wasn’t

he

home
that
he
realized
he
had
lost
the
shoes.
He
was
afraid
that
his
parents
would

angry
and
disappointed,
so
he
begged
his
sister
to
keep
it
a
secret.
Zahra
agreed
and
the
two
decided
to
share
Ali’s
running
shoes.
Zahra’s

first.
After

to
Ali.
He
could
then
run
to
his
school,
which
began
in
the
afternoon.
Although
he
ran
as
fast
as
he
could,
Ali
often
arrived
late

was

by

Ali
heard
about
a

was

the

When
he
learned
that
the
third

he
decided
to
take
part.
He
ran
home
excitedly
and
promised
his
sister
that
he
would
win
her
the
new
shoes.
The
day
of
race
arrived.
Ali
had
a
strong
start,
but
halfway
through
the
race
he
began
to
get
tired
and
his
legs
began
to
ache.
Getting
more
and
more
exhausted
he
thought
only
of
Zahra
and
his
promise
to
her.
Dreaming
of
the
new
shoes
he
would
win
for
his
sister
gave
him
strength,
and
he
stayed
right
behind
the
two
fastest
runners,
determined
to
finish
third.
Suddenly,
as
the
finish
line
drew
near,
another
runner
collided(碰撞)
with
Ali
from
behind
and
he
crashed
to
the
ground.
Ali
looked
up
and
saw
the
other
boys
rushing
ahead.

together.
