Unit 7 What does he look like
I. About the teaching material
The main content of this unit to talk about the people’s physical appearance and its Yes/No questions and short answers. Through the learning of this unit, let students describe people’s appearance freely and let students write short a passage to describe themselves by using the adjective words.
II. Teaching aims:
i. Aims of knowledge
A: Learn some words about people’s build, height, hair
B: Sentences structures: What does he /she look like
What do you/ they look like
He/she is tall./ short. They are thin/fat.
He has long/ short hair. He wears glasses.
Is he tall Yes, he is. / No, he isn’t.
Does she have long hair
Yes, she does./ No, she doesn’t.
C. Grammar: the differences between “is” and “has”
ii. Aims of Ability
Learn to talk about and describe what people look like
Get Ss to do pair-work to describe people’s appearance
Get Ss to practise listening, discussing , writing , drawing and survey
iii. Aims of emotions
Train Ss to describe people’s appearance, lead them to watch each other carefully .
Love life and bring up the feeling of beauty.
III. Teaching main and difficult points
A: Master the new words of people’s build, height, hair and the usage of the basic sentence patterns of describing people
B: Let Ss describe people’s appearance and write a short passage

Period One

I. Teaching aims:
Words: hair ( curly, straight, black, blonde, long, short)
Height ( tall, short, medium)
Build ( thin, heavy, medium)
Sentence patterns: Is that your friend Yes, it is./ No, it isn’t.
What does he/ she look like
She is medium build and she has long hair.
II. Teaching main and difficult points

Use the sentence structures freely
III. Teaching produces:
Step 1: Free talk
T: What day is it today S1: Today is Wednesday.
T: What’s the date today S2: Today is April 4th.
T: How are you S3: I’m fine. And you
T: Fine. And How is the weather S4: It’s fine.( sunny, windy, rainy, cool, cold, warm, ..)
Step 2: Lead- in
Teacher can ask Ss some questions. If the weather is fine, what do you want to do And If the weather is raining, what do you do at home Then let Ss answer the questions freely. Then ask other students Do you like… I like playing basketball, watching TV…. Then ask one girl the question, Do you have a doll at home The teacher takes out a doll. Then Let the girl answer the question.
Step 3: Learn New words.
Then Let Ss look at the doll. Teach them how to describe the doll
What does it look like It has long/ short hair. It is short and heavy.
It has curly / straight hair. It is tall and thin.
Then take out some dolls to teach them new words:
hair, build, height, long , short, blonde, black, curly, straight, tall , thin , heavy, medium
Then let Ss read and remember these words
Step 4: Presentation
Ask one student to come here, in front of BB
Then teacher asks one student “What does he look like ” Let the student describe him.
The teacher helps the student answer: He is tall. He is medium. He has short hair. His hair is black.
Then ask another student come here… Do the similar activities.
Step 5: Practice:
1. Take out the picture, let Ss look at the picture and turn to the page 41. Finish 1a .Match the words in the picture and read these words.
2.Listen to the tape and fill in the blanks in the picture above on P41,

3.Find the Amy’s friend in the picture and read the dialogue
Step 6: Pair-work
Look at the pictures , describe them and practice the following dialogue:
A: Is that your friend B: Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t.

A: What does he do B: He is a teaching.
A: What is he doing B: He is having an English class.

Step 1: Make a report
Let Ss take out their pictures, and then describe these cartoon boys and girls
Then teacher asks one student : T: What do you look like
Teacher helps the student answer the question : I’m short . I’m thin. I have long hair. I wear school uniform .
Step 2: Chain game
Let Ss ask one by one in a group. Learn to describe themselves.
The teacher begins: T: What do you look like
S1: I’m thin. I’m tall. I have black hair.
What do you look like
S2: I’m short. I’m heavy. I have short hair.
What do you look like

Then The teacher lets Ss ask the next group: T: What does he look like

Step 3: Grammar Focus:

What does she look like She is tall. She has curly hair.
Step 4: Presentation:
Look at some photos of stars; Just say one word to describe the stars:
e.g. Yao Ming is tall. Han Hong is heavy.

1. Get the Ss to practice the above conversation and communicate with each other.
Then turn to page 44, Finish Section B 1a
2.Look at some famous musicians or actors, then make sentences.
Then finish Section B 1b
Step 4: Presentation
1. Ask some Ss to come in front of Bb. Then Let Ss describe the student:
Eg. Chen Yi is a good student. He’s medium building. He has short black hair. He likes reading and playing basketball.
2. Then Finish 3a
Read the description of the four classmates . And Match them with the pictures.
Step 5 Game
Describe someone in the class Ask your classmates to guess who you’re describing.
Ask one Ss to come into the Bb, According to the describing to draw a boy or a girl, then guess who it is
Then one of Ss who is the best describer.
Step 6. Pair-work(Section A 3b)
Look at the pictures and Then describe . Student A writes the names in the box next to the people in the picture. Student B Asks questions to find the people.

Step 7: Writing
Enjoy some cartoons played by famous people, and describe the famous people, the contents include : head, face, hair, nose, eyes, ear, mouth, body,
etc.
e.g. short/ long hair, straight/curly hair, blonde/brown/black hair, tall/ short/medium height, thin, fat/heavy, medium build, a small mouth/body, long/short legs, a big/thin/round face, two big eyes, big mouth, etc.
Step 8: Homework
Make a survey. Get the Ss to do appearance survey, demand the Ss to learn to use What do you look like What does.. look like To talk about the appearance of their classmates.

Step 5: Presentation
Let Ss design a new look for himself . And Write What he looked like before and what he looks like now.
e.g. I’m a student. I have a new look now. I don’t have short hair and small eyes. I have long blonde hair and two big eyes. I don’t wear school uniform . I wear my beautiful T-shirt and jeans.
