Four teenage girls from Minnesota, US. 120 hours of non-stop togetherness. No cellphones. This is not a reality show, but an adventure journey.
"It was really perfect," said Julia Ruelle of her recent adventure to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with three of her childhood friends. "By unplugging, we had an amazing time.”
Last year, the 16-year-old took part in an essay contest and carried off a prize. The award was a 5-day canoe and camping adventure with up to three friends. No parents or guides would be there. So Julia invited her friends Anna Wander, Madeline Wilson and Julianna Torelli.
The four Minnetonka High School juniors arrived in Ely for training the day before they began the journey. They set out the next day at 7 a. m, quickly developing a routine.
"We were done paddling by noon, " Julia said. "We ate lunch at the campsites and then it was time for hammocks (吊床), reading, making friendship bracelets(手镯) and talking."
The girls all had experience in the outdoors before.
Anna had been to the Boundary Waters with her family. " I love how you are separated from everything in your life, especially technology," Anna said. Without her phone, she said, "I'm less worried about things." Madeline, too, had been to the Boundary Waters a few years back. "But this time, I had to paddle right and set up camp." she said. The girls made fire and cooked meal together. No one was ever hungry or homesick, but they were nervous in the final night as they waited out a thunderstorm. They left wet sleeping bags in one tent, and squeezed into another for the night. "Every thunderstorm in the Boundary Waters feels huge," Julia said.
On the car ride home, they were all on their phones catching up with friends. "It was a little at a loss turning my phone on," said Anna. "Mental health can be improved so much in the Boundary Waters. It really helps to get away and reconnect with yourself.

With bush fire continuing to swallow different parts of Australia, a local zoo in New South Wales——the state which is the easiest to catch fire——has hit the headlines with a heartwarming story.
Right within the range of a bush fire, the keepers of Mogo Wildlife Park managed to protect all 200 animals from harm after they received evacuation (撤离) orders , according to reports.
Netizens were quick to react on social media and praised the bravery of the zoo keepers, as they stayed and managed to protect animals from uncontrolled fires and even sheltered some at their own house.
The 40-year-old zoo keeper, Chad Staples, described the situation as the worst catastrophe , which felt like Armageddon (大决战) here. Luckily , his team had made a precise plan ahead of time including moving everything flammable (易燃的) from the area and the larger animals to safe places.
What's remarkable is that as the smaller ones needed extra shelter, Staples decided to take them to his own house.
" Right now in my house there are animals of all descriptions in all the different rooms. They are safe and protected...not a single animal is lost," he said.
BBC News also mentioned that "there's a tiger to the back of the house". Some media outlets highlighted the "heroic job" in their headlines. Online users also reacted with thumbs-up and were glad to see all the staff and animals coming through the horrific fire.
Located in the southern coast of New South Wales, Mogo Wildlife Park houses Australia's largest collection of primates, and many different and unique animals such as zebras, giraffes, rhinos and red pandas.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money, but most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?" "When I got that great job, did Jim, as a friend, really feel good about it? Or did he envy my luck?" "And was Paul friendly just because I had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad.
But when we look back, it is too late. Why do we go wrong with our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meanings. And if we do not really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You're a lucky dog! (你真幸运! ) " is he really on your side? If he says, "You're a lucky guy!" that is being friendly. But what about "a lucky dog"? There is a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. What he may be saying is that he thinks you don't deserve your luck.
"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for" is another phrase that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem. But this phrase contains the thought that your problem is not at all important.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save you another mistake.
8. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to interpret what people say.
B. What to do when you listen to others talking.
C. How to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people.
D. Why we go wrong with people sometimes.
9. According to the author, why do we go wrong with our friends?
A. Because we fail to listen carefully when they talk.
B. Because people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say.
C. Because people usually state one thing but mean another.
D. Because we tend to doubt what our friends say
10. What does the underlined word it refer to in the second paragraph?
A. being friendly B. lucky dog
C. a bit of envy D. your luck
11. When we listen to a person talking, what is the most important thing for us to do?
A. Notice the way the person is talking.
B. Take a good look at the person talking.
C. Mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyes.
D. Examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture.
D
There is a picture: A polar bear is lying lifeless on a beach. On the shore, in the background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a deadly weapon hanging casually on his shoulder. This powerful image has made people question the motivation for this kind of tourism, or ecotourism. Does our proximity(接近) to large animals in the wild, frequently fueled by a desire for exciting images, lead to such animals becoming accustomed to human contact? If that is the case, surely the losing side will end up paying the ultimate price for such proximity.
To my sorrow, I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and indeed stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot. The bear's death should never have happened. Was the beach examined beforehand? Was there access to flares (照明弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly? These are standard measures for any operator. The incident is probably the result of a terrible systematic failure.
Nevertheless, the incident should not negate (否定) the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind of travel has very little impact, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it takes place. This can be by making financial donations to conservation groups, providing income to local communities, or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals. In Svalbard, visitors become ambassadors for the endangered polar bear, increasing awareness of the fact that the far greater danger they are facing is the sea ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.
Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.
12. Why was the polar bear dead?
A. It was probably hunt for its fur by tourists.
B. It was probably frightened to death by flares.
C. The proper procedures weren't probably followed.
D. The beach wasn't probably equipped with safety devices.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. Ecotourism could be developed properly.
B. Financial donations should be strongly advocated.
C. Environmental awareness has greatly increased.
D. Visitors have a guilty conscience about ecotourism.
14. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A. More challenges haven't yet been accepted.
B. Better measures for conducting ecotourism are a good choice.
C. The environmental benefits from ecotourism are very obvious.
D. The positive effects of protecting tourists haven't yet been felt.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To cause readers to focus on polar bears.
B. To stimulate(激励) readers to reflect on ecotourism.
C. To stress side effects that ecotourism has caused.
D. To analyze the reason why the polar bear was killed.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
A housewarming party is a special party to be held when someone buys or moves into a new apartment or house. The person who bought the house or moved is the one who throws the party. The party is a chance for friends and family to congratulate the person on the new home. 16 And it is a good time to fill the new space with love and hopefully presents.
17 Some people register a list of things they want or need for their new home at a local store or stores. Some common things people will put on a gift registry include kitchen tools like knives and things like curtains. Even if there isn't a registry, a good housewarming gift is something to decorate the new house with, like a piece of art or a plant.
18 This is often appreciated since at a housewarming there isn't a lot of food served. There are usually no planned activities like games at a housewarming party. The host or hostess of the party will, however, probably give all the guests a tour of their new home. Sometimes because a housewarming party happens shortly after a person moves into their new home, people may be asked to help unpack boxes. 19
Housewarming parties get their name from the fact that a long time ago people would actually bring firewood to a new home as a gift. 20 Now most homes have central heating and don't use fires to keep warm.
A. This isn't usual though.
B. It is traditional to bring a gift to a housewarming party.
C. You can also bring food or drinks to share with the other guests.
D. If you're lucky enough to receive gifts, keep them in a safe place.
E. It also gives people a chance to see what the new home looks like.
F. The best housewarming parties encourage old friends to get together.
G. This was so that the person could keep their home warm for the winter.
