Han Tianheng picked up a carving knife at the age of 6 and never put it down. Today, the 79 year-old artist, one of China’s most respected living masters of seal carving(印章雕刻), calligraphy and Chinese painting, still remembers the incident the first time he held a knife in his hand.
“I cut my thumb badly and was horrified by the bloody sight,” he said, adding that his mother applied ashes because she couldn’t afford to take him to a hospital. “The cut left a scar, which is still clear today.”
An eye for an eye and blood for blood, the incident didn’t set him back. Instead, it aroused his passion for the ancient art form. He was determined to pursue a path that would lead to a career in seal carving.
The journey of art exploration was a little bumpy for the young man in his quest for excellence, and his seal works were harshly criticized by a famous old painter.
Most would have crumbled under the criticism, not Han. It made him even more determined. After six months’ hard work, he visited the painter again.
“This time, he asked me to carve a seal for him. This was positive affirmation,” Han said. “Praise and criticism are what an artist should learn to handle all his life. Praise is candy and criticism is medicine. We can live without candy, but cannot live without medicine when ill.”
Han rose to fame during the early 1960s, famous for bird and insect seal art. Han’s seals are an essential ending part on the paintings of a long list of well-established artists.
“A seal for a good painting is like the buttons for an haute couture(高档女子时装).An experienced tailor always knows how to choose buttons that match the whole style,” Han said.
His seals are variety-grand and solemn for Liu Haisu’s paintings, light and vivid for Lu Yanshao’s, graceful and gentle for Xie Zhiliu’s.
“A good seal carver should keep his own style, and at the same time go well with the painting’s style,” he said.
( )4.What influence did the incident have on Han when he was six?
A.He got injured very seriously.
B.He learned how to use a knife.
C.It aroused his interest in seal carving.
D.It helped him learn how hard life was.
( )5.Which words can best describe Han’s journey of art exploration?
A.Smooth and fruitful. B.Inspiring and lucky.
C.Boring but worthwhile. D.Tough but rewarding.
( )6.In Han’s opinion, what do an experienced tailor and a good seal carver share?
A.The huge respect they earn.
B.The flexibility they display at work.
C.The targeted customers they serve.
D.The efforts they have to make to succeed.
( )7.In which section of a newspaper does this text most probably appear?
A.Education. B.Events.
C.Entertainment. D.People.

Ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behaviour to meet changing conditions, according to new research.
For their experiment, researchers from the University of Toulouse and the University of Arizona focused on Argentine ants, which are only 2~3 millimetres long and frequently move from colony (栖息地) to colony depending on how far food is. Tapping into the ants’ talent for fast commutes (通勤), the researchers constructed bridges between their colonies. The bridges varied in width from a fifth to three quarters of an inch.
Then the researchers sat back and monitored the traffic. To their surprise, even when those narrower bridges were nearly overloaded, there were no 20-ant pile-ups. And traffic remained steady regardless of how crowed the bridges were because ants could adjust to the flow of road conditions.
“When crowding on the path increased, ants assessed it locally and adjusted their speed accordingly to avoid any interruption of traffic flow,” the researchers said. “Moreover, ants avoided entering a crowded path and made sure the bridge was never overloaded.”
The lesson for humans? The traffic problem mostly lies in our loss of the quality that the ants have. You’ve probably noticed it on your own commute to work. Driving is fun when there’re few cars on the road—a lane-change (车道变换)here, a little acceleration there. Then traffic slows down. But some impatient drivers still constantly move between lanes.
“Traffic jams are common in human society where some people are focusing on their own personal objectives,” the researchers said. “In contrast, ants share a common goal: the survival of the colony. Thus they’re expected to act cooperatively to get food.”
The research also suggests that the ever-widening of highways may never free us from traffic jams. As long as we drive along with our own agendas, no matter how many other people are on the road, we’ll always end up in a traffic jam. Indeed, less space may be a good thing. It leaves less room for personal choices and forces us to take a page from the driving handbook of ants.
( )8. What did the researchers do to the ants in the experiment?
A.They fed them with much delicious food.
B.They trained them to avoid heavy traffic.
C.They built bridges linking their colonies.
D.They improved their colonies constantly.
( )9. How did the ants behave during the experiment?
A.They worked together to remove the road blocks.
B.They sped up to get out of the traffic jam quickly.
C.They made their way carefully in the given direction.
D.They adjusted themselves to the flow of the traffic.
( )10. What is the biggest cause of the traffic jam in human society?
A.Poor road construction. B.People’s inability to adjust.
C.People’s selfish driving. D.Too many vehicles on roads.
( )11. What is the text mainly about?
A.What ants help us do for driving safety.
B.What ants can teach us about traffic jams.
C.Why ants drive much better than humans.
D.Why ants are best at handling traffic jams.

Although it has been indicated in recent years that plants are capable of seeing, hearing and smelling, they are still usually thought of as silent. But now, for the first time, Itzhak Khait and his colleagues at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that tomato and tobacco plants made ultrasonic(超声的)sounds at frequencies humans can’t hear when stressed by a lack of water or when their stem is cut.
Microphones placed 10 centimetres from the plants picked up sounds in the ultrasonic range of 20 to 100 kilohertz. Human hearing usually ranges from 20 hertz to 20 kilohertz. “These findings can alter the way we think about the plant kingdom,” they wrote in their study, which has not yet been published.
On average, drought-stressed tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour, while tobacco plants made 11. When plants’ stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour, and tobacco plants 15. Unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour. It is even possible to distinguish between the sounds to know what the stress is. The researchers trained a machine-learning model to separate the plants’ sounds from those of the wind, rain and other noises of the greenhouse, correctly identifying in most cases whether the stress was caused by dryness or a cut, based on the sound’s intensity and frequency. Water-hungry tobacco plants appeared to make louder sounds than cut tobacco plants, for example. Although Khait and his colleagues only look at tomato and tobacco plants, they believe other plants may make sounds when stressed.
Enabling farmers to listen for water-stressed plants could open a new direction in the field of precision(精准) agriculture, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly important as climate change exposes more areas to drought.
Khait’s study also suggests that insects and some mammals can hear and respond to from as far as 5 metres away. A moth may decide against laying eggs on a plant that sounds water-stressed. Edward Farmer at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland thinks the idea that moths might be listening to plants is “a little too speculative”. After all, there are already plenty of explanations for why insects avoid some plants and not others.
( )12. What were tomato and tobacco plants’ reactions to different stresses?
A.They reacted to different types of stress with the same sound.
B.Cut tomato plants produced more sounds per hour than water-hungry ones.
C.Cut tobacco plants seemed to make lower sounds than drought-stressed ones.
D.Tobacco plants might make louder sounds than tomato plants when short of water.
( )13. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.The potential applications of the research.
B.Challenges facing farmers in the future.
C.Farmers’ contributions to the research.
D.The future development of agriculture.
( )14. What does the underlined word “speculative” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Practical. B.Surprising.
C.Unsupported. D.Complicated.
( )15. What may be the best title for the text?
A.Silent scream B.Mysteries of nature
C.Inner voices D.A yet-to-be-published study

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转) and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(紧抱)to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It’s an earthquake! It’s an earthquake!” They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising!” The villagers started running away from the beach.
Sami watched dumbstruck(呆若木鸡).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve metres high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
Paragraph 1:
Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them.______

Paragraph 2:
“Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared, little one. Come to me quickly.”_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Oxybreath Pro Still Available Online and Has Been Selling Fast部分内容“It provides an excellent level of air fil-tration,it is comfortable and best of all it is easy to wash and reusable!(它提供了极好的空气过滤水平,它是舒适的,最好的是它容易清洗和可以重复使用!)” “It is washable.( 它是耐洗的。)”,d. “It lasts longer. (它持续的时间更长。)” 和f. “It filtrates better.( 它过滤得更好。)”符合对其优点的描述。故选C。
2.B 细节理解题。根据文章“It’s only £379(was £759), but with our discount link you’ll get 50%off. Delivery takes only a few days if you order today. Just order it with our link to the official website.
根据第三段“Instead, it aroused his passion for the ancient art form.”
根据第四段“The journey of art exploration was a little bumpy for the young man in his quest for excellence…”
根据倒数第三段韩的原话“‘A seal for a good painting is like the buttons for an haute couture(高档女子时装).An experienced tailor always knows how to choose buttons that match the whole style,’…”

由第二段“Tapping into the ants’ talent for fast commutes (通勤), the researchers constructed bridges between their colonies.”
由第四段“‘When crowding on the path increased, ants assessed it locally and adjusted their speed accordingly to avoid any interruption of traffic flow,’ the researchers said. ‘Moreover, ants avoided entering a crowded path and made sure the bridge was never overloaded.’”
由倒数第二段“‘Traffic jams are common in human society where some people are focusing on their own personal objectives,’…”
根据文章第三段“Water-hungry tobacco plants appeared to make louder sounds than cut tobacco plants, for example.”
根据文章第四段“Enabling farmers to listen for water-stressed plants could open a new direction in the field of precision(精准) agriculture, the researchers suggest. They add that such an ability will be increasingly important as climate change exposes more areas to drought.” 故选A。
根据后文“After all, there are already plenty of explanations for why insects avoid some plants and not others.( 毕竟,对于昆虫为什么避开某些植物而不避开其他植物,已经有很多解释了。)” 因此speculative 与unsupported(不受支持的)表达含义一致。
故选A。

17.C 由上文可知,作者家里没有网络了,所以他必须要上网时,要找到能上网的地方,由下文“I’ll go to the office, the library, the coffee shop, or some other place with free public Wi-Fi, and work on what I need to do online.”
18.B 由文中“…I use it in a deliberate way, a way that benefits me and my life, and a way that adds value.”
19.E 后文“I could focus on writing without being disturbed. I have more time to read, to write, to think, to exercise and to walk.”
选A。

One possible version:
Dear Mr Henry,?
Good news for you! An activity about paying a visit to Confucius Museum will be organized by our class. I’m writing to invite you to join us.
As scheduled, the activity will be held on July 5th. We are going to meet at our school gate at 8:00 am. We can experience Chinese culture and have a better knowledge of Confucius in the museum, where we can also see many ancient collections related to Confucius. Do bring some water with you, for it may last long. Besides, don’t forget to take your passport.
I’d appreciate it if you could accept my invitation. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua?
第二节
One possible version:
Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifted away! He struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught a palm tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out to Sami but could not see him. He clung to the tree tightly while the sea was all around. In hope of seeing Sami, Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sami round and round.
“Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried. “Don’t be scared, little one. Come to me quickly.” “But Grandpa, I can’t swim!” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sami cried in despair. Suddenly, Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it! Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed;but in the near distance, his Grandpa was on another tree! Soon it was calm;both Grandpa and Sami came down the trees, rushed to hug each other, and then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude.
