Dear Amy,
I couldn’t read your two e-mails until today because my computer was broken. I’m sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m glad you’re feeling better and are recovering(康复). I’m surprised that in China someone’s liver(肝脏) matched yours! This is really a moving story– a stranger donated part of his liver to a girl he doesn’t even know!
You’re right. We shouldn’t care too much about our weight. I’m happy you stopped taking those weight-loss pills. From your photo I can see you are now looking very well in the hospital. To keep slim is important, especially for an actress, but nothing is more important than health. Your doctor’s advice is indeed very good– exercise for at least half an hour every day and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
It’s not only in your country. It’s the same here with us Chinese– many people are always going on diets or taking weight-loss pills, which are often dangerous. But in fact, some of them are not overweight(超重) at all. I hope these people can learn something from your story. Hope you will leave hospital as soon as possible.
Love

My first reaction was that it was a terrible accident . Then I saw another plane fly into the South Tower and I realized that I was witnessing an act of terrorism. My wife and I spent the day watching the terrible pictures over and over again . When I watched family members looking for their loved ones , the pain in their eyes was something I would never forget . I couldn’t understand how something this terrible could have happened . It wasn’t until a few weeks after September 11 that I began to see that perhaps some good did come from this tragedy . People seem different now , more understanding , more tolerant . Little things that seemed to be such a trouble before are no longer big things . Personally , I am more tolerant than I was . I realize life is too short , and too precious , to let myself get worried over small things . I’ve learned also that you can’t take things for granted . Things change in the blink of an eye . People go to work and don’t come back . One moment they’re living and the next minute they’re not . And , it doesn’t matter who you are , there is nothing you can do about it . We never know when our time here will be over , so we all need to make the most of every minute we have . You try to learn from what happened . You can’t be used up by it . You can’t live by it . All you can do is just live . 注:crash 撞击 reaction 反应 witness 目击 tragedy 悲剧 tolerant 宽容的 precious 珍贵的 take … for granted 认为……是当然的 1、The word “positive ”in the passage probably means _________. On a hot African morning, Leila was lying on her stomach and an elephant was walking towards her. Leila waited. Then she pushed the button on her camera. “And I got my best photo of an elephant ever, by lying under my car,” Leila explained. “I wanted to get close to the elephants, but of course this was of dangerous; they had their babies with them. So every morning I used to park my car in the open near the path (小道). They used to take the same path every morning when they left the water hole. After a week, they were used to seeing my car. So the next morning, I lay under it and got my photo!”
Many of the best wildlife photos come from good planning. In Africa, photographers set up their hides (隐匿处) near water holes. They also set up hides near forest paths, as animals use the same paths every night. For bird-watching, many lakes have hides. Inside the hides, bird-watchers can watch all day in the shade (荫处) out of the wind and rain.
Good wildlife photos are needed for books, postcards, magazines and newspapers. But a success rate of 1 in 20 is good.

A friend of mine named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office a street urchin(顽童) was walking around a shining car.“Is this your car, Paul?”he asked.
Paul answered,“Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.”The boy was surprised.“You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything. Boy. I wish…”He hesitated(犹豫).
Of course Paul knew what he was going to wish for. He was going to wish he had a brother like that. But what the boy said surprised Paul greatly.
“I wish,”the boy went on,“that I could be a brother like that.”Paul looked at the boy in surprise, then he said again,“Would you like to take a ride in my car?”
“Oh, yes, I'd love that.”
After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said:“Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?”
Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbours that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again,“Will you stop where those two steps are?”the boy asked.
He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(残疾) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.
“There she is. Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn't cost him a cent. And some day I'm going to give you one just like it...then you can see for yourself all nice things in the Christmas window that I've been trying to tell you about.”
Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began an unforgettable holiday ride.
(1)The street urchin was very surprised when_______.

(2)From the story we can see the urchin _______.
A. wished to give his brother a car B. wanted Paul's brother to give him a car
C. wished he could have a brother like Paul's D. wished Paul could be a brother like that
(3)The urchin asked Paul to stop his car in front of his house________.

(5)The best name of the story is ______.
A. A Christmas Present B. A Street Urchin C. A Brother Like That D. An Unforgettable Holiday Ride
解析 (1)本题考查细节理解,依据本文第二段:Paul answered,“Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.”The boy was surprised.故答案选B。
(2)本题考查学生的推理判断能力,依据倒数第二段和第三段的内容,尤其是顽童对他弟弟所说的话:“And some day I'm going to give you one just like it...”故选A。
(3)本题考查学生的深层理解。Paul的种种猜想会对正确选择产生干扰。依据是本文倒数第二段的最后一句话:“Then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas window that I've been trying to tell you about.”故选D。
(4)本题考查归纳文章中心。从顽童的言行之中可以看出他对残疾弟弟有深深的爱。如:“You mean your brother gave it to you and it didn't cost you anything.”“He was carrying his little crippled brother.”
所以A Brother Like That为最佳题目。

The giraffe is the tallest modern land animal. It can be over 5.5 metres tall. Its neck alone may be 1.9metres long. Yet the giraffe has only seven bones in its neck, the same number as in the human. Even a small bird has many more bones in its neck than in a tall giraffe. Each bone in a giraffe's neck is very long, while the bones in a human neck are small. That makes the difference. A female giraffe gives birth to one baby at a time. The baby, called a calf, is about 1.9 metres tall at birth. By the age of eight it is full-grown. The giraffe eats mostly leaves. A Japanese toy maker says that they’ve developed a gadget(小器具)that translates dog barks (吠)into human languages and plan to begin selling the gadgets—under the name of Bowlingual—in the US pet stores and present shops this summer.
People laughed when the Japanese toy maker Takara company made the world’s first dog-human translation machine last year .But about 300,000 of them have been sold since it was on sale in Japan last year .Far bigger sales will be expected once an English language translation machine for dogs comes to America in August .The United States is home to about 67 million dogs ,more than six times the number in Japan.
“We know that the Americans love their dogs so much ,so we don’t think they’ll mind spending $ 120 on this gadget”, the Takara marketing manager said before the journalists at a meeting in Atlanta. Bowlingual ,one of US Time magazine’s coolest inventions of 2002, has two parts .A microphone is tied to the dog’s collar(项圈)and sends out sound information to the gadget held by the owner .Then the translation is done in the gadget by a database (数据库)with every kind of barks .Those barks show six feelings—happiness, sadness ,disappointment ,anger ,
declaration and desire .Each of the feelings is then translated into words like “Let’s play.” “Look at me !” or “Spend more time with me.”
Takara says it has spent millions of dollars developing the gadget .One thing that seems certain is that the markets for animal translation machines will probably be a dog’s world since Takara has no plans to develop such a gadget for cats . “They are too unpredictable (反复无常) ,”the marketing manager said.
