Jeremy Fox, a retired businessman in a small city in England, recently bought an old farmhouse with a yard and a small field, some five miles out of the town. There he planned to lead a simple life with his wife, Amelia.
It was while clearing out the old barn on the far side of the yard that he made an interesting discovery. In a corner, under some old sacks, he found some large fragments (碎片) of an antique (古董) bowl. Out of curiosity, he took them into the kitchen and, much to the anger of his wife, washed the mud off them. That evening he spread newspapers over the kitchen table and carefully stuck the fragments together. However, two pieces were found missing.
Two days later, having pulled down the barn, Mr. Fox was digging over the ground in preparation for the installation (安装) of a greenhouse, when he discovered the two missing pieces. When he had stuck them in position, the bowl looked so fine that Amelia agreed to its being placed on a table in the living room, in front of the window.
揥e might have something a bit special here, he said to his wife. A few days later, Jeremy took several photographs of the bowl, which he sent off to Sotheby抯 in London.
Unexpectedly, Sotheby’s was extremely interested in the bowl and sent an expert to inspect it. It turned out that it was a Chinese Ming fish bowl, dating back to around 1500, and might be expected to get a five-figure sum at an auction(拍卖).
A week later still more unexpectedly, two police officers called and told the Foxes the bowl was stolen property(财产).

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu抯 imagination took flight.
But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn抰 expected that he would become the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction抯 highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C.Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.
In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C.Clarke , a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s classic novel : A Space Odyssey in the early 1980s had a great effect on him.
揗y mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea, Liu said. 揟hat night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was awed (使……敬畏) by the mystery of the universe.”
But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational. For example, in The Wandering Earth, Liu looks ahead to the day when our solar system comes to an end and humans have to look for a new place to live. However, all his visions and solutions are based on hard science. Liu抯 works aren抰 simply daydreams.
8. What do we know about Liu Cixin?
A. He is the first Chinese winner of the Hugo Award.
B. He dreamed about wandering in space from childhood.
C He is the first Asian to win the Arthur C.Clarke Award.
D. He became a full-time writer when he was young.
9. Liu Cixin’s words are used mainly to show ______.
A. his interest in mysteries of the universe
B. his love of reading science fiction
C. his confusion when he started writing
D. his feeling after reading Clarke抯 work
10. Why did the author mention The Three-Body Problem and The Wandering Earth?
A. To compare the different writing styles in the two books.
B. To explain how Liu Cixin came up with his ideas.
C. To show that Liu Cixin has a powerful imagination.
D. To prove that Liu Cixin抯 works relate science to reality.
11. What抯 the text mainly about?
A. Liu Cixin抯 achievements and writing style.
B. Liu Cixin抯 contributions to science fiction.
C. How Liu Cixin became a sci-fi writer.
D. How Liu Cixin started a new sci-fi style.

Friendship is an important part of human life. Friends can share our joys and sadnesses. We aren't alone. Many different animals also make friends.
Recently, a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the coast of Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The researchers found that these dolphins are more willing to hang out with partners that like the same tool. Other factors, like family closeness or sex, have no impact on this relationship. It suggests that dolphins form social bonds based on shared interests.
Apart from dolphins, elephants and horses are also known to form friendships. Are friendships only limited to the same species?
Of course not, The Atlantic reported. In 2015,Timur, a goat, was left in the enclosure(围场) of a tiger, Amur, as a meal. But instead of eating Timur, Amur liked to play with him and got angry when others were close to his friend. That's because in captivity(圈养), animals don't need to spend much time and energy marking their land or looking for mates the way they would in the wild. They are actually more likely to feel bored.
More interestingly, animals not only make friends but also try to keep lasting friendships. Take bats for example. In 2011, scientists found bats often hang out with a few particular friends, keeping loose ties to the rest of their group. Humans are different. "We do not work, play and live together with the same friends all the time," Swiss zoologist Gerald Kerth explained. "But nevertheless, we are able to maintain long-term despite our often highly dynamic(充满活力的)social lives."
12. What do dolphins pay more attention to when making friends?
A. The same interests. B. Family closeness.
C. Hunting behavior. D. The special sounds.
13. How can we understand Amur's action?
A. Amur wants to show Timur his land. B. Amur longs for animals to play with him.
C. Amur has more friends than other tigers. D. Amur pretends to be friendly to eat Timur.
14. In terms of friendship, what is the difference between humans and bats?
A. Bats usually play with certain friends. B. Humans keep their friendship longer.
C. Bats like to live together with friends. D. Humans make friends in social activities.
15. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By listing data. B. By giving advice.
C. By asking questions. D. By taking examples.

【答案】Dear Tom,
Here comes a piece of good news. Chinese Winter Camp, which is intended for international students, is going to be held in our school this winter vacation. Since you are obsessed with Chinese culture, I'd like to invite you to join it.
The Camp is scheduled to last 11 days, from December 18 to December 28. It covers a wide variety of cultural activities, ranging from studying Chinese daily expressions to attending some lectures on Chinese history and traditional culture. As we all know, language is closely related to culture, so I'm convinced that you can dig out Chinese cultural features from language study. In addition, the Camp provides a chance for you to visit some famous museums, which is the best way to learn about the country. By admiring the historical relics, you will definitely gain a better understanding of the country.
If you want to be part of it, please sign up for it before December 2nd at our school website. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li HuA
