I’m Susan from Shanghai. I’m studying in Chicago. I’ve experienced real culture shock(文化冲击) living and studying in the US.
People often call Shanghai “The Sleepless City”, but I didn’t understand it truly until I got to Chicago. It was the first Saturday after I got to Chicago. I was shopping with another student when suddenly the store owners along the street started locking(锁) their doors. Soon the street was closed, even though it was far from getting dark. This is something I’ve never seen in Shanghai. You can go out to restaurants, stores, and the movies even long after midnight in Shanghai.
After the first week of class, I’ve found some differences between Chinese students and American students. When a teacher asks a question, my classmates speak out their answers right away. And some of them even interrupt(打断) the teacher. In Shanghai, we’re usually quiet in class so the teacher can finish on time. We always ask the teacher questions after class.
One day I met a really interesting girl in a café(咖啡馆). I was writing a letter to my mother, and she asked me what language I was writing in. We ended up talking for about an hour! People in Chicago seem very comfortable with each other. It seems quite normal for two strangers(陌生人) to just start talking in a café. This is something that doesn’t happen in Shanghai. At home, I would never just start talking with a stranger.

C. Its streets are crowded. D. Its weather is comfortable.
( ) 55. What does the material mainly talk about?
A. Susan’s family and friends. B. Susan’s after-school activities.
C. Susan’s school life in Shanghai. D. Susan’s experiences in Chicago.
