Types of Fire Extinguishers(灭火器)
Fire extinguishers are marked according to the kind of fire on which they should be used. Using the wrong type of extinguisher can be dangerous and make things worse.
Type A extinguishers are used for fires on paper, cloth, wood, rubber, many plastics and so on. These types of fires usually leave ashes when they burn, so use Type A extinguishers for fires that leave ashes.
Type B extinguishers are used for burning liquids, such as oil, gasoline, and paints. These substances often come in barrel?shaped(桶形的) containers, so use Type B extinguishers for such barrels.
Type C extinguishers are used for electrical fires. Electricity travels in a circuit(电路), so use Type C extinguishers for circuits.
Remember, A is for Ashes, B is for Barrels, and C is for Circuits. Make sure you have the correct type of fire extinguisher before you try to use it.
Using a Fire Extinguisher
To help you remember how to use a fire extinguisher, learn PAPS. PAPS stands for Pull, Aim, Press, and Sweep.
Pull the pin(销) at the top of the extinguisher cylinder(圆筒).
Aim the nozzle(喷嘴) at the base of the fire.
Press the handle.
Sweep the spray(喷雾) from side?to?side at the fire's base until it goes__out.

A. inform B. persuade C. entertain D. comment
2. What should you do before using a fire extinguisher?
A. Check whether it is in good condition.
B. Check whether you have chosen a right one.
C. Make sure you have an instructor beside you.
D. Make sure you have mastered the way to use one.
3. What does the underlined phrase “goes out” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Becomes bigger. B. Keeps shining.

One of the easiest ways to stop the spread of disease is to simply wash your hands. Twenty seconds of handwashing with soap and water can reduce illnesses and save lives. But, many people, especially children, do not have good handwashing habits. One problem is that children do not wash their hands often enough or long enough. Children may think that it is a tiresome thing to do.
To help handle this problem, two businesswomen from India created a product to turn handwashing into a fun activity. Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a tool called SoaPen, aimed at teaching kids good handwashing habits and encouraging kids to wash their hands with soap appropriately and regularly.
“It's such a simple habit to do, but the fact is that people aren't doing it, and it's resulting in actual deaths—which is shocking. So, we decided to come up with a fun method,” said Issar.
As the name suggests, SoaPen is a pen made out of soap. The children draw on their hands with the soap pen and then wash the drawing off. If they don't spend enough time washing it off, the colors remain on the children's hands. Issar said it makes sure that children take enough time to wash their hands. This may be especially helpful in a classroom. Often a teacher does not have the time to make each child wash his hands properly.
Kids actually wash their hands for the proper amount of time because they're drawing on their hands. To obliterate the drawing, they actually wash their hands instead of just going under water and, you know, a one?second wash and off.
Good news is that the school children in Mumbai, India, will soon most likely wash their hands after handling a pet. Issar and Anand stated that SoaPen to be created everywhere will help promote good habits through handwashing in the city across the globe.
4. Why does SoaPen come into existence?
A. To cure kids of some kinds of diseases.
B. To teach kids the importance of soap.
C. To help kids wash their hands correctly.
D. To make money from children consumers.
5. Which of the following does Issar agree with?
A. Handwashing is anything but little.
B. SoaPen is designed for classrooms.
C. Some teachers ignore kids' health in school.
D. Kids don't know the right way of handwashing.
6. What does “obliterate” underlined in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Show. B. Reserve. C. Learn. D. Remove.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. SoaPen has become popular worldwide.
B. The inventors think SoaPen has a bright future.
C. SoaPen has been applied in Mumbai schools.
D. Kids' health should be paid more attention to.
C
Tsunamis are one of the most terrifying natural phenomena that the world suffers. The series of waves produced by the displacement(位移) of a large volume of water can be caused by several events, including earthquakes, underwater explosions and landslides. Once triggered(引发), a tsunami can hit the coast within minutes and its destructive power can be enormous.
At present, early warning systems rely on measuring the movement of dart buoys(浮标), which record changes in the sea level, or assessing the bottom water pressure of the developing tsunami. But they require the tsunami to physically reach the measurement location. The buoys could be fixed in the deep ocean, but this requires an unrealistically big number of buoys. Or people can fix the buoys along the shoreline, but due to the high speed of the tsunami, this method may leave no warning time for people on the land.
Instead, there is a new system—using sound waves to predict tsunamis. Sound waves caused by an earthquake can travel much faster than the tsunami that has been triggered. Using standard underwater microphones, we can record these sound waves long before the tsunami arrives regardless of the direction in which the tsunami will travel. The sound signals come from changes in pressure, so what we actually analyze is a series of data on how the pressure is changing overtime. Though buoys also show changes in pressure, the tsunami front must actually reach the buoys to inform us that there is an increase in the water surface. By using underwater microphones, however, we only need to catch the sound signals.
Though the idea of using sound waves to predict tsunamis has been put forward previously, the key to our idea is a new mathematical method that can be used to analyze these recorded sound signals in near real time. Once this is worked out, we can not only warn people of a tsunami but also more accurately estimate its size long before it reaches the shoreline.
8. From Paragraph 1, we know ________.
A. what can trigger off tsunamis
B. how to predict tsunamis effectively
C. why tsunamis are the worst natural disaster
D. how to protect the coastal areas from tsunamis
9. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The dart buoys.
B. The changes in the sea level.
C. The changes in water pressure.
D. The present early warning systems.
10. What can we infer about the new warning system from Paragraph 3?
A. It has high accuracy.
B. It can increase warning time.
C. It can monitor changeable sea levels.
D. It can adapt to various water wave conditions.
11. The general idea of the passage is about ________.
A. ways to guard against tsunamis
B. methods of analyzing sound signals
C. a new real?time tsunami warning system
D. tsunamis—the most terrifying natural disaster
D
Imagine turning on the GPS and seeing an image of your car from above. As the car drives, the map follows along in real time, informing you of any traffic, pedestrians, animals or other things nearby. Routes and names of road appear over the live stream. It's like the map has come to life.
This type of map isn't available yet. But it could be very soon. In 2014, the WorldView?3 satellite was sent into space. Even though it orbits Earth at more than 370 miles (600km) away, it can take images of objects on Earth that are just 10 inches (25cm) across. Looking all the way from outer space, it can make out a smartphone held in your hand. It can tell what types of cars are travelling down a road. But it can't identify your face or read the cars' license plate numbers.
According to some reports, this satellite and other US satellites have the technology to take even sharper images, with a resolution of up to around 4 inches (10cm). But US law forbids making these super?sharp pictures public. But the idea that anybody might be able to spy on the entire Earth in such detail may seem scary. Live, high?detail satellite mapping could be used to keep tabs on anybody at any time, without the person's knowledge. Ray Purdy of University College London told CNN that he couldn't imagine what this could mean for privacy. “Most satellites are commercially owned, so if you have money, you can have that imagery. It means anyone can spy on anyone,” he said.
At the same time, live, detailed maps of the Earth's surface could aid humanity in amazing ways. Satellite images can help experts track storms as they form and chart their paths. At high detail, live maps of a disaster area could quickly reveal people in need of rescue as well as the safest routes in or out. Satellite images are already helping the police catch illegal fishing operations. Higher detail may make it possible to catch other criminals in the act. The images could also make it easier for farmers to watch over their crops or for scientists to find minerals. Also, these images play a very important role in monitoring the health of forests and other landscapes.
What do you think? Would you like to see everyone accessing high?detail live maps of the Earth's surface? Please share your idea with us on the website.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A. By telling a story.
B. By supposing a situation.
C. By making a comparison.
D. By using a research finding.
13. What can the WorldView?3 satellite do?
A. Tell how a person looks.
B. Identify what a pedestrian is holding.
C. Help farmers sow seeds for their crops.
D. Read a running car's license plate number.
14. What kind of feeling was expressed in Ray Purdy's words?
A. Regret. B. Excitement.
C. Concern. D. Sympathy.
15. What's the best title of the passage?
A. Anyone can spy on anyone
B. Criminals have nowhere to hide
C. More satellites into space: good or bad
D. A live map of everywhere on Earth: scary or cool

根据第一段“Fire extinguishers are marked according to the kind of fire on which they should be used. Using the wrong type of extinguisher can be dangerous and make things worse.” 故选A。
根据第一段中“Using the wrong type of extinguisher can be dangerous and make things worse.”
根据画线短语上文“Sweep the spray (喷雾) from side?to?side at the fire's base until it”可知在火的底部从一边到另一边喷洒,直到火熄灭,it指代上文fire。
Amanat Anand and Shubham Issar created a tool called SoaPen, aimed at teaching kids good handwashing habits and encouraging kids to wash their hands with soap appropriately and regularly.(Amanat Anand和Shubham Issar发明了一种叫作Soapen的工具,目的是教孩子们良好的洗手习惯,并鼓励孩子们用肥皂适当而有规律地洗手。)
故选A。
根据后文they actually wash their hands instead of just going under water and, you know, a one?second wash and off(孩子们为了抹掉这幅画,他们实际上是在洗手,而不是仅仅在水下冲一下,你知道,一秒钟洗完就走了)可知,划线单词意为“移除”,故选D。

In 2014, the WorldView?3 satellite was sent into space. Even though it orbits Earth at more than 370 miles (600km) away, it can take images of objects on Earth that are just 10 inches (25cm) across. B. Identify what a pedestrian is holding.(识别行人携带的东西)符合以上说法,故选B项。
根据第三段的“Most satellites are commercially owned, so if you have money, you can have that imagery. It means anyone can spy on anyone,” he said.(他说:“大多数的卫星都是商用的,因此如果你有钱,你就可以有这些图像。这意味着任何人都可以监视别人。”)可推测,Ray Purdy对这种高清图像卫星的使用表示担心,因为这会有安全和隐私的隐患。故选C项。
15. D 主旨大意题。根据文章的主要内容,尤其第三段的But the idea that anybody might be able to spy on the entire Earth in such detail may seem scary.(但任何人都可以如此详细地监视整个地球的想法似乎很可怕)和第四段的At the same time, live, detailed maps of the Earth's surface could aid humanity in amazing ways.(与此同时,地球表面实时的、详细的地图可能会以惊人的方式帮助人类)可知,本文主要讲述了WorldView?3卫星提供的实时、高清、详细的地球表面图片的优势和劣势。D. A live map of everywhere on Earth: scary or cool(地球上各处的实时地图:恐惧还是很酷)可以作为本文标题,故选D项。
