Press your fingers into the back of your head, just above your neck. If you feel a small bony bump(突起), you may find evidence of human evolution(进化): it could be your body responding to common smartphone use in the 21st century.
According to a recent study, published in Scientific Reports, more young people have bony bumps at the base of their skulls, right above the neck. Medical professionals call them enlarged external occipital protuberances (EEOPs,枕外隆突).
Australian health scientist David Shahar, the author of the study, told the BBC that he's seen more and more patients with EEOPs over the past ten years. Together with other researchers from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, they examined 1,200 skull x?rays from people aged 18~30. They also measured the bumps and noted each person's posture(姿势). They found that one in four people had developed these growths. This led to their theory that smartphones are the cause.
According to their research, looking down at our phones adds stress onto the top of our spines(脊柱). To prevent damage to our spines, Shahar believes our bodies add fresh bony bump to help reduce the extra stress.
Most of the EEOPs measured just a few millimeters. However, several subjects were found with EEOPs as large as 30 mm.
In his report, Shahar said the results “highlighted the need” for prevention. In other words, we need to change our posture while using our phones.
Many people assume our bones are solid and unmoving once we reach adulthood. In reality, they are alive and covered with blood vessels(血管), which allows them to develop in unique ways for each person.
Aside from EEOPs, other noticeable recent changes in human bodies include shrinking jaws, narrower elbows and generally smaller skeletons. The human body is adapting to modern life, so who knows what people in the future might look like?
4. What did the recent study find about EEOPs?
A. They grow on one's neck.
B. They can lead to many health problems.
C. They may stop growing when you reach 30.
D. They occur among more and more young people.
5. What is the main cause of EEOPs according to the researchers?
A. Extra stress. B. Aging bones.
C. Smartphone use. D. Gene problems.
6. Which of the following would Shahar probably agree with?
A. EEOPs increase the stress on our spines.
B. EEOPs are actually beneficial to our spines.
C. Young people's bones adapt in similar ways.
D. Young people should exercise to improve their posture.
7. What's the writing purpose of the text?
A. To persuade readers to protect their spines.
B. To explain why human bodies develop EEOPs.
C. To show some recent changes in human bodies.
D. To recommend some healthy habits of using phones.
C
The past 70 years have been good for corn production in the Midwestern United States, with yields(产量) increasing fivefold since the 1940s. Much of this improvement has been credited to advances in farming technology but researchers at Harvard University are asking if changes in climate and local temperature may be playing a bigger role than previously thought.
In a newspaper, researchers find that a prolonged(延长的) growing season due to increased temperatures, combined with the natural cooling effects of large fields of plants, has had a major contribution to improved corn production in the US. “Our research shows that improvements in crop yields depend, in part, on improvements in climate,” said Peter Huybers, professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences. “In this case, changing temperatures have had a beneficial impact on agricultural production, but there is no guarantee that benefit will last as the climate continues to change.”
“Understanding the detailed relationships between climate and crop yields is important as we move towards feeding a growing population on a changing planet.” The researchers modeled the relationship between temperature and crop yields from 1981 to 2017 across the so?called Corn Belt. They found that as temperatures increased due to global climate change, planting days got earlier and earlier, shifting by about three days per decade. Early planting means the corn has more time to mature before the end of the growing season.
There is also a second, more surprising trend that has benefited corn yields. Whereas the vast majority of temperatures have warmed over the last century, the hottest days during the Midwestern growing season have actually cooled.
The researchers estimate that more than one quarter of the increase in crop yields since 1981 can be attributed to the twin effects of a longer growing season and less exposure to high temperatures, suggesting that the crop yield is more vulnerable to climate change than previously thought.
The researchers also show that the planting and harvest date farmers currently use is significantly better adapted to the present climate than it would be to climates in earlier decades.
8. What is previously thought to be the reason for the increase of corn production?
A. Local temperature change.
B. Advanced farming technology.
C. Climate change.
D. Production efficiency.
9. Why is it important to understand the relationships between climate and crop yield?
A. The climate has a beneficial impact on agriculture.
B. We can change the climate to improve crop yield.
C. We depend on the climate to get food.
D. Crop yield relies less on the climate.
10. How many factors that benefit corn yields are mentioned in the text?
A. 4. B. 3. C. 2. D. 1.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain a mystery.
B. To question a common sense.
C. To show a new trend.
D. To introduce a research result.
D
Imagine being a business that regularly takes huge quantities of your own products worth millions of pounds and burns them up. Your stock literally goes up in smoke. It sounds crazy, but the practice is common for some of the world's biggest clothing manufacturers. They argue that it is the most cost?effective way of maintaining their brand's exclusivity(独特性).
The clothes that are burned are those that do not sell at a high enough price. Rather than watch them go on sale, the companies would set fire to them and regain a small amount of energy.
Nobody knows exactly how much unsold stock is burned annually by those fashion houses, but burning clothes has various negative impacts on the environment. For example, burning clothes made from artificial fibers may release plastic microfibers into the atmosphere, which worsens global warming. A U.K. parliamentary committee report on sustainability and the fashion industry advises the government to ban the burning of unsold stock if it can be reused or recycled.
Actually, there are other approaches. What if those companies had a section tasked with taking back unsold clothes, redesigning them into new products, and shipping out the new products to the market once again?
There is also now an opportunity to focus on biodegradable(可生物降解的) fabrics. Clothes that break down faster might not have to be burned. They would also appeal to those who care about the environmental impact of their own wardrobes.
Additionally, we have an over?production problem. According to the World Bank, while clothing sales have risen steadily since 2000, clothing__utilization has fallen at roughly the same rate. For every extra T?shirt that is sold, it will be worn roughly half as much as it would have been 20 years ago. That means better forecasting market trends would in theory result in less waste.
Burning clothes won't happen simply through fashion firms. The scale of fashion production has to change. And it's important to recognize that these consumer?focused brands will only go where the market takes them. If protecting the environment really matters to the public, they have to make clear that they want more sustainable clothing in the first place. Without consumers demanding that, it won't change.
12. Paragraph 3 mainly talks about ________.
A. how important the U.K. parliamentary committee report is
B. why fashion firms should end burning unsold stock
C. why fashion firms burn unsold clothes in large numbers every year
D. how artificial fabrics will contribute to global warming
13. The underlined expression “clothing utilization” in the 6th paragraph means ________.
A. how long clothing lasts
B. how well clothing sells
C. how often clothing is used
D. how clothing is designed
14. All the following possible solutions are mentioned in the passage to deal with unsold clothes EXCEPT ________.
A. making consumers feel better about their purchases
B. redesigning and making them into new clothes
C. conducting research on market demand before production
D. making clothes out of environmentally?friendly materials
15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Burning clothes is a better choice for every fashion firm.
B. Consumers play a key role in stopping burning clothes.
C. The secret that some fashion firms burn clothes is well kept.
D. Today's clothes are better than those two decades ago.

第三部分 应用文写作
Dear Sir/Madam,
Knowing you are in need of volunteers for the coming Asian Games, I'm writing to apply for it.
I have a good command of English, which will surely be of great help in communicating with foreigners. I also enjoy cooperating with others and I'm easy to get along with. More importantly, I once worked as a volunteer for the International X?sports Games, making me quite qualified for the job.
I'd be grateful if my application could be taken into consideration. Please reply at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
