Make Albertsville Shine
After a long and snowy winter, spring has finally come to Albertsville. The leaves are out on the trees, and the grass is green again. All around town, people are cleaning up their homes. They are pulling weeds and planting flowers. They are sweeping yards and washing windows. Before long, Albertsville will look as fresh and shiny as a new coin, right?
Definitely not. Just take a look at the streets and sidewalks around town. There is litter everywhere: fast food wrappers, soft drink cans, plastic bags, and more. The litter is dirty and ugly. It takes the shine off our lovely town.
But it doesn't have to be this way. In many neighboring towns, volunteer groups “adopt” a mile of a street or road to keep clean. The groups include schools and clubs. Volunteers pick up litter, cut bushes, wash sidewalks, and even plant flowers!
Sure, the volunteers work hard, but they also get to enjoy the beauty of their town. Better yet, they feel proud of themselves for making their town a better place to live.
So what are the people of Albertsville waiting for? Talk to people in your school or club about adopting part of a street or road. Then get to work! If enough volunteer groups get busy, Albertsville really will shine this spring.
1. Albertsville doesn't look fresh and shiny because of ________.
A. the lack of trees
B. the litter on the roads
C. the dirty and ugly houses
D. the bad weather in spring
2. Volunteers do the following EXCEPT ________.
A. picking up wastes
B. looking after plants
C. raising money
D. cleaning sidewalks
3. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. persuade people to stop littering

C. call on people to help clean up Albertsville
D. compare Albertsville with neighboring towns

At the time, I attended a private school called Maryvale College. I was the champion of the Maryvale sports day every single year and my mother won the moms' trophy(奖杯) every single year. Why? Because she was always chasing me to kick my ass(屁股), and I was always running not to get my ass kicked. Nobody ran like me and my mom.
She was a thrower, too. Whatever was next to her was coming at you. If it was something breakable, I had to catch it and put it down. If it broke, that would be my fault, too, and the ass?kicking would be that much worse.
We had a__Tom__and__Jerry__relationship,__me and my mom. She was the strict disciplinarian(纪律执行者); I was naughty as shit. She would send me out to buy groceries, and I wouldn't come right home because I'd be using the change from the milk and bread to play arcade(街机) games at the supermarket. I'd drop a coin in, time would fly, and the next thing I knew there'd be a woman behind me with a belt. It was a race. I'd take off out the door and through the dusty street, clambering over walls, ducking through backyards. It was a normal thing in our neighborhood. She could go at a full sprint(冲刺) in high heels, but if she really wanted to come after me she'd kick her shoes off while still going at top speed.
When I was little she always caught me, but as I got older I got faster, and when speed failed her she'd use her wits. If I was about to get away she'd yell, “Stop! Thief!” She'd do this to her own child. She'd yell “Thief!” knowing it would bring the whole neighborhood out against me, and then I'd have strangers trying to grab me and tackle me, and I'd have to duck and dive them as well, all the while screaming, “I'm not a thief! I'm her son!”
4. Why did the author's mom often chase him and kick his ass?
A. Because he didn't get a trophy on the sports day.
B. Because he didn't get a high mark in the school.
C. Because he failed to obey his mom's disciplines.
D. Because he failed to buy groceries for the family.
5. The underlined phrase “a Tom and Jerry relationship” in Paragraph 3 indicates that ________.
A. they are close friends
B. they play run and catch every day
C. they are born enemies
D. they play hide and seek every day
6. Why did the author's mom yell “Stop! Thief!” when chasing him?
A. Because she really wanted to win the race.
B. Because she wanted to catch and punish him.
C. Because he stole his mom's money to play games.
D. Because he stole something from the neighborhood.
7. Which of the following best describes the author's mom?
A. Violent and stubborn.
B. Reasonable and gentle.
C. Energetic and friendly.
D. Strict and responsible.

When you walk into your place of work in the morning, are you walking in as yourself or as a stranger? While the workplace is a place to wear your professional face, it's also a place where you should feel comfortable and connected to your coworkers. There's a good reason for this: A new study finds that hiding your true self at work is not good for your career and your sense of belonging in the workplace.
“When someone hides their true identity, their social connections suffer and this has an impact not just on the individual, but also on the organization they work for,” says co?author Professor Manuela Barreto. “Our findings suggest openness about one's identity is often beneficial for individuals, the group and their workplace.”
When employers fail to create this sense of belonging among their employees, it's difficult for the individuals to find their purposes in work. This then impacts their ability to be productive. More specifically, the researchers found that hiding these characteristics from coworkers reduces their self?respect, job fulfillment and job commitment.
For the study, researchers at University of Exeter focused on commonly stigmatized(感到羞耻的) characteristics, like having a history of poverty or mental or physical illnesses. They sought to see how hiding such conditions could affect one's ability to grow.
The findings were based on multiple studies they analyzed from the Netherlands and the USA. In one of the experiments, they had 95 men and women describe a time when they either hid or revealed(展现) a stigmatized characteristic about themselves. In another one, the researchers offered imaginary scenarios(情景) to 303 participants that again either hid or revealed themselves.
In both experiments, participants were then asked how they'd feel after hiding or sharing the stigmatized characteristic. The answers of those who hid themselves resulted in the conclusion stated above: lower sense of belonging and job fulfillment and commitment.
So we need environments where people don't need to hide. Encouraging complete openness can turn the office into a more comfortable place that allows employees to enjoy working.
8. Why is Professor Manuela Barreto mentioned?
A. To clarify the process of the study.
B. To explain the findings of the study.
C. To state the purposes of the study.
D. To show the influence of the study.
9. What do the researchers find about employees who hide their characteristics?
A. They always look down upon others.
B. They are often content with their work.
C. They are likely to get tired of their work.
D. They can ruin their coworkers' confidence.
10. What were participants in both experiments required to do?
A. To tell their stigmatized memories.
B. To participate in real scenarios.
C. To describe others' characteristics.
D. To report their true feelings.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Openness is beneficial to your job promotion.
B. Stigmatized characteristics need hiding properly.
C. Hiding who you are is harmful in the workplace.
D. The sense of belonging benefits employees a lot.

A favorite dish for purple sea urchins(海胆) living off the coast of California is kelp(巨藻). The problem is, those kelp forests are shrinking rapidly and that's hurting the oceanic ecosystem. So a group of scientists carried out an experiment to see if these sea urchins can themselves become a dish.
Just off the coast, three divers get ready to jump in. They're students from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. The task: Count purple sea urchins. Their professor, Luke Gardner expects they'll find plenty of urchins. And that's not a good thing. “What they do is they just eat everything in sight,” Gardner says. These purple creatures are eating up California's kelp forests, which provide food and shelter for numerous sea animals.
The problem began around 2014. That's when Gardner says warmer ocean temperatures began affecting the reproduction of kelp. It's also when a disease killed off sunflower sea stars, a killer of purple sea urchins. Therefore, the purple sea urchin population grows very fast.
The divers bring Gardner quite a lot of purple sea urchins. What's inside is the part we eat, the uni(海胆黄)—a type of delicious food in Japanese cuisine. “The problem with these purple sea urchins is that when you open them up, sometimes there's nothing in there. And they might be a little smaller compared to market?sized urchins,” says Gardner.
Then, it is time for the taste test. The class crowds into the kitchen of the restaurant Aubergine. Here, chef Justin Cogley serves uni from around the world. He opens up the purple sea urchins, taking the orange uni out and prepares it on a fried potato. “Honestly, it's rich and buttery,” Cogley says. His conclusion? He'll serve it.
It's a tasty end to the project. But this could be just the beginning. A company called Urchinomics has been selling its human?raised urchins in Japan. Now, it is working to secure a site in California. It's all in an effort to save the state's kelp forests and help the thousands of animals that depend on them.
12. What is the scientists' experiment about?
A. Turning purple sea urchins into a dish.
B. Finding new food for purple sea urchins.
C. Discovering the causes of a poor ecosystem.
D. Studying the ecosystem of the coast of California.
13. How is Paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By presenting research findings.
B. By following time order.
C. By analyzing causes.
D. By making comparisons.
14. According to Gardner, what's a problem with purple sea urchins?
A. Their uni tastes like bad butter.
B. They don't all have uni inside.
C. They can't be raised by humans.
D. Their size is beyond the market standard.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Save California's Kelp by Eating Purple Sea Urchins
B. A Scientists' Cooking Dream Comes True in California
C. Kelp Forests Suffer Because of Japanese Cuisine
D. Clean Up the Sea by Restoring Kelp Forests

She was the strict disciplinarian(她是一位严厉的纪律执行者)和文章第三段She could go at a full sprint(冲刺) in high heels, but if she really wanted to come after me she'd kick her shoes off while still going at top speed.(她可以穿着高跟鞋全速奔跑,但如果她真的想追我,她会在全速前进的同时把鞋子踢掉。)

根据第四段中“The problem with these purple sea urchins is that when you open them up, sometimes there's nothing in there. And they might be a little smaller compared to market?sized urchins,” says Gardner.(“紫海胆的问题是,当你打开它们时,有时里面什么也没有。与市场海胆的大小相比,他们可能要小一些。” Gardner说。)由此可知,根据Gardner的说法,紫海胆的问题是它们里面并不是都有海胆黄。故选B。
15. A 主旨大意题。根据第一段可知生活在加利福尼亚海岸的紫海胆最爱吃的一道菜是巨藻。问题是,这些巨藻林正在迅速萎缩,这正在损害海洋生态系统。因此,一组科学家进行了一项实验,看看这些海胆能否做成一道菜。以及最后一段中It's all in an effort to save the state's kelp forests and help the thousands of animals that depend on them. 故选A。

Dear Mark,
Hearing that you have won the first prize in the program Chinese Bridge hosted by the Confucius Institute, I felt extremely proud of you. Congratulations!
It came as no surprise that you won the contest, because your proficiency in the Chinese language as well as your deep dive into its culture has left a deep impression on me. I wonder how you have become such an excellent Chinese learner. Would you please share your stories of learning Chinese?
I'd appreciate it if you could write me soon. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
